Welcome Back! It’s not too early to start making your plans for our annual Fourth of July Celebration! We will have a full day of activities for your family to enjoy, with events on the tennis courts and golf course. And as always, we will end the evening with a spectacular fireworks display. Come early for our Family Night on Wednesday, July 3, and stay to enjoy our special buffet dinners on Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6. Remember to make your reservations by July 2 to enjoy the discounted rate. See the following page for more details and a complete schedule of events. We are happy to announce that Jason D. Williams will be returning to Lake Toxaway on August 3. This event will feature entertainment by the “Wild Man of Rock and Roll” as well as an “Elvis Cocktail Party” featuring The King’s favorite cocktails and a special “Rock and Roll” dinner for $80 per person. When he last played at the club in 2011, this event was sold out in just a few days, so don’t hesitate to make your reservations as soon as they open on June 3. See more details on the Membership page.

The Club has implemented pink tees for our senior ladies. The LTWGA board has guidelines determining who is eligible to play from them. The course has also been rated by the Carolina’s Golf Association from these sets of tees. The women have a busy and fun slate of events set aside for this season. Some special events are scheduled for the members. On Sunday June 23, the Bridgestone Company will be doing a ball fitting from 11:00am to 4:00pm at the Learning Center. Come out and see what ball best fits your game. Our staff will also do a club testing day on Saturday June 29. Just bring a few of your clubs and we will test them on the Launch monitor at no charge. As a reminder, if you have a GHIN # from your other club, please give us a call so we can forward it on to the Carolinas Golf Association. This will enable you to post your scores at either club and they will then be transferred to your other club automatically.

Reminder: Lightning Alerts For your own safety, please leave the course and seek shelter immediately when you hear one long blast, meaning that lightning has been detected in the area. You may resume play when you hear the all-clear signal of three short blasts. 2

CROQUET Hello CROQUETNUTS! The 2013 season is officially underway, and our first weeks have been busy and successful. Steve Turner and his crew have done a fantastic job with lawn maintenance. The courts are again the envy of all clubs that visit us. The season opener was a visit by 14 players from Damon Bidencope’s Tega Cay Mallet Club. They came from Charlotte to enjoy a fun day of mixed Golf Croquet, good food, a trip on the Miss Lucy, and, of course, an appreciation of our beautiful sights. Many thanks to all LTMC members who participated. Our first Wine & Wickets was held May 13, with 37 players hitting the courts. Jeanette Wilkes and Doug Bailey were our first winners, as they tied for the lead with amazing long distance wicket shots in the playoff. First timer Betty Coningsby took home the 50/50 raffle prize winnings. It pays to be a newbie! Remember that Wine & Wickets is every Monday with instructions for beginners at 3:00pm and golf croquet play at 3:30pm, followed by dinner at the club. Please try and make your dinner reservations early. Congratulations to Les Avera, AGAIN! Les took home the first place prize in the top first flight at the Hammock Dunes Tournament in Florida recently. This is his second win in the young 2013 season. It appears that Les is becoming a force to be reckoned with on the croquet lawns. As he displayed his newly earned trophy at Wine & Wickets, he announced that he is available for mentoring or competitive play to one and all.

LAKE TOXAWAY COUNTRY CLUB

Our interclub participants at Highland Falls. Pictured above are Karen Phillips, Louise Spencer, Linda Garner, and Cathy Cooper; below are Paul Cooper, Kent Garner, Don Molitor, and Alan McDonald

Our first Interclub match was with Highland Falls at their wonderful new facility. Kent and Linda Garner, Paul and Cathy Cooper, Don Molitor, Louise Spencer, Karen Philips, and Alan McDonald represented the CROQUETNUTS well playing a mixed club format. Of course, fun was had by all. Remember, if you want to participate in any of the Interclub matches, contact our coordinator, Gary Harden. He is anxiously awaiting your phone calls to sign up! Our next match is a home stand on June 13 against Highlands Country Club and Trillium. Play will begin at 9:30am. Spectators are welcome.

CROQUET Weekly Group Play Wine & Wickets Mondays | 3:30pm-6:00pm (Instruction at 3:00pm)

Lots of fun for everyone, and great for beginners! Immediately followed by casual dinner at the club. Singles Golf Croquet Sundays | 3:00pm Beginning June 16

Our Singles Golf Croquet play was well attended last year, and we will surely see a repeat performance again in 2013. Raquel Ferrero is again coordinating this program, so plan to be there on Sunday afternoons. American Rules Play Thursdays | 9:00am Beginning June 20

This is a good way to learn American Rules Croquet in a casual and fun setting. The format this year will be different: Nancy Avera has designed a learn-by-playing approach. Every match will be a HiLo doubles match partnering an experienced player with a less experienced player. The idea is to attract more players, as we have changed the American Rules Club Championship to a doubles format. (Occasionally, Nancy has arranged for a visiting instructor to introduce us to Association Croquet, the advanced game that we will be promoting this year throughout the WNC area. We are hoping to host an Association Croquet Tournament with championship players plus a pro-am in 2014.)

Lake Toxa Feast

Feast With Friends June 10 marks our opening Feast with Friends dinner. This year’s kickoff starts with our very own Robert Balentine, who will be informing us about one of the real treasures of the Lake Toxaway area, The Southern Highlands Reserve. SHR is a native plant arboretum and research center founded by Robert and Betty that rests atop Toxaway Mountain. You will truly be amazed not only by the beauty of the gardens, but also at the fascinating work that is taking place at this one-of-a-kind gem in the Western Carolina Mountains and our very own backyard.

Erin Schlegel

Erin Schlegel is excited to be joining the Lake Toxaway Club team this season as our new Events Coordinator. She loves the club environment and plans to build her career in this exciting industry. Erin was raised in Franklin, Mass., about forty minutes outside Boston. She grew up with two older sisters and one younger brother, and is very family-oriented. Erin’s hobbies include traveling, spending time with family and friends, and meeting new people. She graduated from UMass Amherst this May, with a major in Hospitality and Tourism Management and a minor in Education. During her college years, she interned at several prestigious properties in the New England states and gained experience throughout all

facets of the club life. Erin also travelled to Switzerland, where she attended classes and was able to visit a number of beautiful European cities and even took an exciting plunge while skydiving over Prague! “I look forward to joining the food and beverage team and getting to know all of you this season,” she said. “Thank you for welcoming me to Lake Toxaway.”

Chris Cooper

Chris grew up in Bethesda, Md., with an older sister who now lives in Singapore and twin brother who now works on the Royal Caribbean cruise line. He graduated in December 2012 from the University of South Carolina at Columbia with a BS in hospitality management specializing in club management, and served as president of the USC chapter of the Club Managers Association of America. Chris grew up swimming and wrestling. He got his start in the club industry at age 15 as a lifeguard at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda. He served as the swim coach at Congressional for 2 years, coaching about 80 children ages 6 to 18, who placed 3rd out of 15 teams in a local club competition Over the past two summers, Chris interned at Chevy Chase Country Club in Maryland, where he was responsible for planning the annual employee picnic, and at Old Town Country Club in Winston-Salem, NC. Chris likes to travel, scuba dive, golf, fish, and skydive. He now lives in Brevard, and since he has been here, he has enjoyed hiking and tried fly-fishing for the first time. “That was fun, but definitely hard to learn,” he said about fly-fishing. “But I did catch a couple of fish.”
