David Dew, CCM, CCE

We are all so appreciative of the wonderful job that Steve Turner has done as our golf course superintendent and wish him the best as he embarks on a new era in his life as he retires from the golf industry to relax and spend more time with his family. I have had the unique opportunity to develop a great personal friendship with Steve over the last several years, and I know that many of you like and respect him as well. Steve possesses a love for Lake Toxaway that is evidenced by his handiwork. While we will certainly miss him, I am confident that this is a great move for him and his family.

Steve Turner

Steve will be retiring at the beginning of September. He says he is ready to change the pace of his life. After all, Steve began working at age 16 and spent 20 years on citrus farms in Florida before beginning a career in the golf course industry that has lasted the better part of 20 years. He first came to the club in 2007 when his wife accepted a job here in Lake Toxaway. He arrived just in time to oversee the renovation of the front nine holes of the golf course, and then managed the construction of the new croquet lawn in 2011. We are all extremely grateful for Steve’s meticulous attention to detail and desire for perfection. Although the timing is a couple of months earlier than initially planned, Steve’s wife was offered a great career opportunity in Knoxville that will bring them “home.” Steve was born just outside Knoxville in Maryville, and that is where his family lives, so this move will bring him closer to his grandchildren. He says that he is looking forward to being there with them versus watching them grow up on Facebook. Our golf course consultant, Tim Moraghan, is already working closely with Steve and the club to find our next golf course superintendent. As you may expect, Steve has made extensive checklists for the staff, and until the new superintendent arrives, you will not see any difference in how the course is maintained.

Steve said, “I really value the friendships made here. I’m going to miss the place. But where I want to be is close to my grandkids.”

GOLF July was a month to forget this year. As of July 6, we had already received more total rainfall than we received in all of 2012. Steve Turner and his crew have done a wonderful job maintaining the course the best it could be. We need your cooperation in course etiquette by replacing divots, fixing ball marks, raking bunkers, and remaining on cart paths whenever posted. There have been several sightings of private carts off paths. Even with the excess rain, we were still able to get some events completed. The Ladies Member-Guest Tournament went on as scheduled and was a great success. Congratulations to all the winners. The Lake Toxaway Charities Golf Tournament was held on July 20 with a slight adjustment due to weather. Congratulations to the winning teams, and thank you to all for coming out and supporting our local charities. As you have seen in TV commercials, the PGA and USGA are dealing with pace of play throughout the country with a motto of “while we are still young.” We ask everyone to be aware of your pace. We all want to enjoy the game. Be ready to play when it is your turn.

CROQUET IT”S OFFICIAL! Sometimes it rains even on our croquet lawns. We CROQUETNUTS have found ourselves sloshing our way through June and July. Despite having accumulated over 18 inches of rain in July alone and almost 75 inches year to date, the Mallet Club’s avid players still have managed to flock to the courts.

Association Rules Instruction with Jeff Soo On July 6, in the midst of what most club members were describing as a rainstorm, eight LTMC players joined Jeff Soo for a classroom and on-court clinic to learn how to play Association Rules Croquet. Jeff spent an hour during a brief shower using a white board to describe the differences between American Rules and Association Rules croquet. The players took to the lawns for several hours of play and instruction. Comments from the players ranged from “I really like this game” and “this is really fun to play” to “this game requires the ability to hit balls from a long distance,” which presented an obvious opportunity for mentoring from our pro Kenny Lovett. If you are interested in learning more about this game, it will be gradually introduced into the Thursday morning six wicket high/ low play over the next few months. If there is enough interest, we will schedule another targeted clinic for our CROQUETNUTS.

Feast with Friends The festivities continued on July 8 when 122 club members attended the second “Feast with Friends” dinner and speaker series. This time, Dr. Clyde Brooks entertained us with the chronicles of his life as Brevard’s top veterinarian. A good time was had by all as always. Thanks again to Larry Bradner for putting together an excellent series.

Don’t miss out on signing up for the August 12 Feast with Friends event when we will have professional falconer Peter Kipp-duPont and two of his feathered friends: four year old Seymour and three year old Zelda Suri (known as “Zel”). Peter has been training birds of prey for more than 44 years. He has been actively involved in the peregrine falcon reintroduction program and Seymour and Zel are two of his personal peregrines. This should prove to be another fascinating evening in this already popular series.

Interclubs We held our second home Interclub on July 18 with Cedar Creek Racquet Club and Burlingame. The event was well attended and we managed to stay dry. Gary Harden organized another mixed social golf play format, which the visiting clubs again really enjoyed. Our last match is scheduled for August 22 at Wildcat Cliffs, and the End-Of-Season Interclub Tournament will be held September 4 at Lake Toxaway. Let Gary know if you are interested in playing. 6

Events and Lessons We are now halfway through our season, and there is much more activity and court time yet to come. Monday Wine & Wickets, Thursday Association Rules Play, and Sunday Singles Golf are the regulars but still to come are some of our biggest special events of the year, such as our club Golf Croquet Tournament, Patriot Weekend Golf Croquet Event, the Lake Toxaway Invitational Golf Croquet Tournament, and the Toxaway Mountain Challenge & Exhibition. Don’t forget to contact our pro, Kenny Lovett, for some lessons to hone your skills for these events. As our ranks continue to grow within our own community, croquet in the Western Carolina Mountains has swollen to ten clubs with a number of other communities working on developing their own programs. Who would have “thunk” four years ago that Lake Toxaway would evolve into one of the premier croquet sites in the country?

As evidence to our growing reputation in the croquet world, Lake Toxaway has been chosen to host the USCA National Golf Croquet Championship, to be held on September 22-25 and featuring the top golf croquet players in the United States. We set the standard in WNC croquet play! A big hand to the club, the Enoches, Kenny Lovett, and all of the CROQUETNUTS for making this possible, and a big thanks to Linda Garner for serving so well as our fearless leader for the last two years. Remember, win by whacking wickets, play by picking partners, and have fun with family and friends.

As always, we are so grateful for the support of our great membership. Even with all of the wet weather in July, we managed to have a record-breaking Charities Weekend, one of the largest family nights in years, and several evenings serving more than 200 people in our dining rooms. The staff has had a great time taking care of you so far this season, and look forward to more fun events as the summer continues. You may notice a few changes behind the bar over the next few weeks. As Alex West leaves to begin his law degree, bartender Nick Castro will step in as our new bar manager. Nick will be with us throughout the season before leaving for New Zealand to work on his doctorate degree in health and wellness. Hannah Smith will also be bartending for us through the rest of the season. A recent graduate of Florida State University, Hannah has already been an asset to us in the dining room, and we are very excited to have her joining us in The 19th Hole. If you haven’t met Nick and Hannah, please drop by and get to know them both.

MEMBERSHIP Lake Toxaway Charities held their annual event at Lake Toxaway Country Club on Saturday, July 20, with golf, tennis, and croquet events, followed by a Safari-themed Dinner Dance.

Once again, the committee, co-chaired by Chip Brown and Buzz Parker, along with 51 volunteers, successfully raised needed funds for organizations within Transylvania County.

This year, approximately $150,000 was distributed to 30 agencies, with more than 1.5 million dollars being raised over the last ten years. 100% of donations are distributed to the recipient organizations. The only expenses are printing and mailing, which is covered by endowment interest income.

Over the years, organizations that have been helped include The American Red Cross, Center for Women, The Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Mediation Center, Rise & Shine Freedom Schools Program, SAFE, Inc., Sharing House, The Free Clinic of Transylvania County, Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic, Toxaway Medical Center Endowment, Brevard College, Boys and Girls Club, Friends for Life, and Noah’s A.R.C., just to name a few.
