We are all so appreciative of the wonderful job that Steve Turner has done as our golf course superintendent and wish him the best as he embarks on a new era in his life as he retires from the golf industry to relax and spend more time with his family. I have had the unique opportunity to develop a great personal friendship with Steve over the last several years, and I know that many of you like and respect him as well. Steve possesses a love for Lake Toxaway that is evidenced by his handiwork. While we will certainly miss him, I am confident that this is a great move for him and his family.
Steve Turner
Steve will be retiring at the beginning of September. He says he is ready to change the pace of his life. After all, Steve began working at age 16 and spent 20 years on citrus farms in Florida before beginning a career in the golf course industry that has lasted the better part of 20 years. He first came to the club in 2007 when his wife accepted a job here in Lake Toxaway. He arrived just in time to oversee the renovation of the front nine holes of the golf course, and then managed the construction of the new croquet lawn in 2011. We are all extremely grateful for Steve’s meticulous attention to detail and desire for perfection. Although the timing is a couple of months earlier than initially planned, Steve’s wife was offered a great career opportunity in Knoxville that will bring them “home.” Steve was born just outside Knoxville in Maryville, and that is where his family lives, so this move will bring him closer to his grandchildren. He says that he is looking forward to being there with them versus watching them grow up on Facebook. Our golf course consultant, Tim Moraghan, is already working closely with Steve and the club to find our next golf course superintendent. As you may expect, Steve has made extensive checklists for the staff, and until the new superintendent arrives, you will not see any difference in how the course is maintained.
Steve said, “I really value the friendships made here. I’m going to miss the place. But where I want to be is close to my grandkids.”
