President’s Message
David Dew, CCM, CCE
I would like to introduce and welcome our new golf course superintendent, Mike Smith. Some of you may have already met Mike, as he has already been here in Lake Toxaway throughout our aerification process and croquet tournament. He says that he is looking forward to meeting everyone and having his agronomic and management experience make an immediate impact on Lake Toxaway Country Club. Mike certainly knows what tournament conditions mean, and I feel confident that his expertise will benefit our course and our club.
Mike has worked in the golf course maintenance industry for 17 years, with 12 of those years as a head superintendent. His experience includes courses in middle Tennessee, north Georgia, and north Alabama, as well as volunteer work at the 2007 U.S. Open and 2008-2010 and 2013 Masters tournaments. Mike spent four years as the assistant superintendent and five more years as the golf course superintendent at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, GA, where they hosted an Annual Intercollegiate Golf Championship and the 2005 United States Senior Amateur Championship. Most recently he worked as the superintendent at Huntsville Country Club in Huntsville, AL. “I am so excited to be a part of the Lake Toxaway family!” Mike said. “I can’t thank the club enough for this tremendous opportunity. I am looking forward to working with Lou and the entire staff in our effort to make Lake Toxaway Country Club the best that it can be.” Mike’s family is also excited to be coming to Lake Toxaway. He brings his wife of 23 years, Penny, and their 12-year-old son, Zachary.
Monday, October 7 5:30pm-7:30pm Main Dining Room
I am happy to have Mike join the Lake Toxaway team, and I know that all of you will give him a warm welcome.

LADIES SCRAMBLE WINNERS We finally got to experience some great Lake Toxaway weather for August and early September, which enabled us to have some fun events. We had another great Patriot Weekend, and were honored to receive the “Freedom Warrior Trophy” for our contributions to the Folds of Honor Foundation.
The Ladies Toxaway Cup matches were won by the Blue Team, captained by Jeff. The Ladies also held their Closing Scramble and Luncheon, which resulted in a tie for first place between the team of Veit, Messer, Crowley, and Jardine and the team of Young, Balistreri, Coningsby, and Williams. The Mixed Team Championship was held on September 29, and it was a very close competition. The Messers and Alexanders tied for first place with a score of 62 points, while the Youngs, Coningsbys, and Kaplans tied for third place with a score of 61 points. Congratulations to all the winners! Plan to be in Lake Toxaway for our final events of the season. Our Men’s One-Day Member-Guest Tournament will be held Wednesday, October 9, with a 1:00pm shotgun start followed by a stag dinner. Our last Men’s Day will be on Wednesday, October 16, with a 9:00am shotgun start, and our last Twilight will be on Thursday, October 17, with a 3:30pm shotgun start.
Please note that the Golf Shop’s hours of operation will be 9:00am-6:00pm in October and 9:00am-5:00pm in November. Our last day will be the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The Learning Center will close for the season on Sunday, November 3. The entire golf shop staff would like to say thanks for all of your patience throughout this rainy summer. We hope everyone has a great winter! 2

TENNIS I can’t believe the end of the season is here. This summer went way too fast. Thanks to all of you wonderful members for your tremendous support in the 2013 tennis events. We will hope for better weather and another great season in 2014.
Next year will be a happy one and sad one for me as a father, as my son Korey will be off to the University of South Carolina in August of 2014. I am so happy and proud of my son, but at the same time I will be full of tears watching him leave for college. Thank you, Lake Toxaway family, for helping me raise Korey as a single dad (and a single mom, LOL). I couldn’t have done it without you. We will never forget what a family you have been to us, and we love you forever.

FITNESS As You Return Home for Winter, Don’t Leave Fitness Behind! As many of you leave your “home away from home,” I want to encourage you to continue with your exercise program. Moderate temperatures and plenty of sunshine promote outdoor activities and sports. However, this year’s cooler temps and rainy weather can dampen the amount of outdoor exercise you’ve been engaged in over the summer months. And with the holidays just around the corner, now is not the time to slough off! Getting back to the gym, joining a group exercise or dance class, or even launching into a daily walking routine are all ways to invest in your health and fitness during this time of year. A summary of the American College of Sports Medicine exercise recommendations for most healthy adults is below. Always consult with your physician before beginning a new exercise program or if you’ve had changes in your health that would necessitate a physician recommendation and/ or approval. Cardiorespiratory Exercise
• Condition your heart and lungs with 30-60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five days per week. Moderate intensity is defined by the Mayo Clinic as activity that feels somewhat hard, quickens your breathing, causes you to sweat lightly within 10 minutes, and in which you can talk but cannot sing. Another way to measure your intensity is by using your heart rate response as a guide. For more information about using your heart rate, please contact Annie at the fitness center for a free session on cardiovascular/heart rate training.
• One continuous session or multiple shorter sessions of at least 10 minutes each are acceptable. • This can be a variety of exercises such as biking, walking, jogging, swimming, aerobic dance classes, using an elliptical trainer, or physical activities like mowing the lawn or gardening.
Resistance Exercise
• Strengthen and train each major muscle group 2 or 3 days a week using a variety of exercises and equipment. Interested in a home exercise program? Contact Annie at the Fitness Center for a special discounted personal training session during the months of October and November. • Complete 1-3 sets of each exercise, with 10-15 repetitions per set.
• Wait at least 48 hours between resistance training sessions. Flexibility Exercise
• Stretch your muscles with flexibility exercises at least 2 or 3 days each week to improve range of motion. Each stretch should be held for 1030 seconds to the point of tightness or slight discomfort. Repeat each stretch 2-4 times.
• Flexibility exercise is most effective when the muscle is warm. Try light aerobic activity to warm the muscles before stretching. Stretching a cold muscle can lead to injury! Neuromotor Exercise
• Neuromotor exercise (also called “functional fitness training”) is recommended 2 or 3 days per week. • This type of exercises should involve motor skills practice (to improve balance, agility, coordination, and gait), proprioceptive exercise training, and multifaceted activities such as Yoga or Tai Chi. • These exercises work to improve physical function and help prevent falls in older adults.

CROQUET Well, CROQUETNUTS, our 2013 season is coming to an end, but it is going out with a bang! Our own LTMC players were again the conquering heroes in this year’s Mountain Interclub Challenge. This year, we were victorious over eight other western North Carolina clubs. We want to thank Gary and Carol Harden for another successful Interclub season. Next year there will be at least ten clubs with lawns participating in the fastest growing sport in WNC.
Many thanks to Susie Dickman and Mary Smith for organizing a fantastic and fun-filled final Wine & Wickets followed by our annual “on the porch” cookout. The LTCC set us up, and our aproned “men” followed through at the grill. That was our last official Wine & Wickets of the season, but remember that the courts will remain open until the Club closes for the season. Casual and casual group play is strictly encouraged. Whites will be appreciated but not required. Maybe we can consider a “Funky Fashion Affair” down at the courts. Also keep in mind this is a good time to hone your skills. Kenny will be available for lessons.
This year’s second annual USCA-sanctioned Lake Toxaway Golf Croquet Tournament was a rousing success. A total of 38 players, including eight of our very own, showed up to compete, with some coming from as far away as Oklahoma and Canada to experience Lake Toxaway’s lawns. All seemed awed by the quality of our courts nestled into the beauty of our lake and mountains. Our own George Bagwell took home the trophy in the top Mallet Flight and Grady Price was runner-up in the Wicket Flight. Congratulations to our CROQUETNUTS.
Thanks again to George Enochs for organizing another wonderful tournament. There are too many LTMC members to name that were instrumental in making this an envied event, but thank you to all and to LTCC for making us look and taste good.

CROQUET The Saturday afternoon “Toxaway Mountain Challenge” featured four players from around the world demonstrating their skills and showing how professional croquet is played. The rainy weather did not stop them from playing, nor did it stop people from showing up. I guess it is fair to say that Toxaway “rains” supreme! This year, our season officially ended with a new event. The USCA Golf Croquet National Championship was held right here in our own backyard. Burlingame, Cedar Creek, Sapphire Valley, and Lake Toxaway were the venues for the block and knockout rounds, and the finals were held on our courts. Sixteen players from around the world descended on us to compete. We all watched some marvelous matches and some incredible play. It is truly amazing to see croquet balls traveling in excess of 55 miles per hour with pinpoint accuracy.
As the season comes to an end, please remember that our courts remain open. Atlanta folks can get ready for winter play. I am sure our Florida residents welcome all Mallet Club visitors for warm weather action. And most of all, thanks to all for another masterful year. Keep your Mallets Mighty, your Strokes Straight and your Hoops Habitual! Drive carefully to those traveling away, and let us all have a happy time for the remainder of our year.
We had repeat winners this year, with top-ranked Ben Rothman taking the prize in singles play, and Ben Rothman and Sherif Abdelwahab capturing the gold in doubles play. Again the LTMC, LTCC, and the USCA partnered well together to create a memorable event for our region.
Despite the rain, many faithful CROQUETNUTS and other fans were in attendance to watch the finals of the USCA National Golf Croquet Championships

MEMBERSHIP Despite Mother Nature’s best effort to wash us away, this has been a great club season. Looking back on all the special events we enjoyed reminds me of how fortunate we are to be part of such a wonderful community, surrounded by natural beauty. Our many special events, such as the Member Welcome Back Party, the night of rock and roll with Jason D. Williams, the dollars raised by Lake Toxaway Charities for the less fortunate, and the record-breaking donations given to the Folds of Honor Foundation during Patriot Weekend, were supported and enjoyed by many.
In addition to these events, we were fortunate to have an exceptional food and beverage staff this year. Joel, Chris, and Erin are a fantastic, hard-working, enthusiastic team of young adults and have been a true delight to work with. Their eagerness to please and willing attitude has been acknowledged and applauded by our membership and is well deserved.
The institution of an Executive Committee to help govern the club and Town Hall meetings to provide factual information to our members have been two positive changes this year. The Executive Committee, made up of Larry Bradner, Thom Young, George Enochs, Karen Phillips, Bob Hamilton, Reg Heinitsh, Jr., and David Dew, has worked long hours to review current club practices, as well as evaluate future goals on behalf of the membership. I am eager to see what the coming months will bring.
Autumn weather reminds us that another season has quickly passed us by. October and November still offer many opportunities here at the club, from the Lake Toxaway Estates Art Festival to our annual Thanksgiving Day Family Feast; the club calendar is full of exciting options for the entire family. Be sure to enjoy the rest of the season here in Lake Toxaway, and please let me take this opportunity to thank you, the members, for your numerous acts of kindness and support for me personally this year.

2013 Dam-to-Dam Swim The Dam-to-Dam Swim enjoyed its second year as part of Patriot Weekend with perfect weather and record participation. It also welcomed a new starting location, as Elaine and Bart Boyer invited the Swim to use their dock, a change greatly appreciated by all swimmers. Some 29 swimmers entered and 25 completed the swim. Included were five guests and two staff from The Greystone Inn, a reminder of the late Tim Lovelace, who was an original founder of the Swim.

Congratulations to all swimmers, and thanks to their monitors and Allied Barton for ensuring their safety. For those who like to plan ahead, next year’s Swim will be held on August 31, 2014.
