hen Yaakov met Rochel at the well, he experienced conflicting emotions. He felt tremendous joy at having finally met his bashert, yet he raised his voice and cried. Rashi explains that he cried because he came empty-handed. He said, “My father’s servant came with ten camels laden with gifts and finery, and I come with empty hands.” Rashi goes on to explain to us why he didn’t bring a gift for Rochel. When Yaakov found out that Aysav was plotting to kill him, he fled from his father’s home. Aysav sent his son Alifaz to chase down Yaakov. Alifaz was a Tzaddik, and when he approached Yaakov he said, “I can’t kill you because you are an innocent man. On the other hand, what will be with the command of my father?” Yaakov said to him, “A poor man has the halachic status of a dead man. Take my money, and it will be considered as if you killed me, so on some level you will have fulfilled your father’s words.” As a result, Yaakov came to the well empty-handed. When it was time to propose to Rochel, he didn’t have the gifts that would be expected, and so, he raised his voice and cried. This Rashi become difficult to understand when we focus on who these people were. The Avos may have walked the same planet as do you and I, but they lived in a very different orbit. Their every waking moment was occupied by thoughts of HASHEM. They lived and breathed to attain closeness to HASHEM. That was the focus of their lives and existence. It was the only thing that mattered to them.  DID ROCHEL REALLY CARE ABOUT TRINKETS? For many years, Rochel knew that she was to marry Yaakov and be a matriarch of the Jewish people. You have to assume that when she finally met her bashert, she was overcome with joy. Here was the man that she had waited for! Here in front of her was this great Tzaddik, the man of her dreams, offering to marry her so she could take her place in destiny. Her very life’s ambitions and desires were now coming to fulfillment. Could you envision any greater joy? At that moment, it is hard

to imagine that she was concerned about glitter and trinkets. It is difficult to imagine that the lack of a little yellow, soft metal in the shape of a circle would bother her. Yet Yaakov cried because he didn’t have a diamond ring to give her. The question is – why? All that Rochel really wanted was being delivered to her. If so, why did Yaakov cry? It seems that the answer is that the

On some level, it isn’t treating her with the kavod due to her, and that caused Yaakov pain – so much pain that he raised his voice and cried. On some level, it was a slight to the honor of Rochel. It wasn’t befitting her significance, so it moved him to tears.

 EVERY PERSON HUNGERS FOR RECOGNITION This is a tremendous lesson to us because the people that we live amongst aren’t on the level of Rochel. To them, a slight to their honor is something that causes them real pain. People will go to great lengths to protect their reputation and dignity because these things are very important to them. And for that reason, we need to develop a real sensitivity to other people’s dignity and honor. But this concept goes much further. The reality is that there are few people who get enough recognition and respect. We humans have many needs. We need food and drink, we need shelter and protection, and we need friends and companionship—most of our needs are met. The one need that that is almost never met is the need to be appreciated. It is something that we hunger for, something that is basic to our success and vitality. Yet there is no store in which it can be bought, no marketplace in which it can be acquired. And oftentimes, a person can go around with a deep hunger, not even realizing what is amiss. One of the greatest acts of kindness that I can do for another person is to treat him with honor. If I find your currency and can acknowledge you in that vein, I can give you that which you deeply crave – and it costs me nothing. The great dichotomy of human conduct is that I must run from my own kavod, yet run after yours. When it comes to my honor, I have to train myself that it is vain and frivolous, yet when it comes to yours, I have to do everything in my power to give you as much honor as I am able. When Yitzchok wanted to bless his son, he needed something first. He needed him to bring him a seuda, a meal of the‫ךמחל‏‬ delicacy of hunted meat, in order for ‫סורפ אלה דווקייל לישבת‬ ‫בערל‏ ‏‬ the Berocho to take effect. The reason behind this seems to be based on the Gemoro in Sanhedrin (103b) ‫אמר רבי יוחנן משום רבי‬ ‫יוסי בן קסמא גדולה לגימה וכו’ מרחקת את הקרובים‬ ‫ומקרבת את הרחוקים ומעלמת עינים מן הרשעים ומשרה‬ ‫שכינה על נביאי הבעל ושגגתו עולה זדון‬ Rabbi Yochanan said in the name of Rabbi Yosi Ben Kisma, great is the mouthful (of food) that distances those that are close, draws close those who are distant, closes eyes from evil and brings the spirit of H-Shem on the Neviim of the idols and its unintentional happening is considered intentional. STORY The years of the Ottoman jurisdiction over Eretz Yisroel, then known as Palestine, were known for their abject poverty. There was little opportunity for business and international trade passed over the small country between the Mediterranean and Syria. The Yidden who lived there did not do so for the economic opportunities they thought they would find. They were there for the spiritual benefits that exist for those who live in the Holy Land. However, the body demands its due, and every person, as holy as he may be, must eat regularly. The people had their own sources of Parnosso, this one brought money with him, the other one had family members in the diaspora who sent him regular donations. But the younger generations could not suffice with their parents’ meager savings, and many of them lived in abject poverty. They tried their hands at all kinds of jobs and money-making schemes, but to no avail. Their stomachs remained empty. In the early twentieth century, a Jewish philanthropist from the US came to visit Palestine. This was Nathan Strauss, one of the founders of Macy’s that is still extant today. He toured the various settlements around Eretz Yisroel, with the farmers and builders of the new land. However, Nathan was most impressed by the community in Jerusalem. He saw people who were humble and poor, yet not downtrodden. He saw that their lack of money did not prevent them from living wholesome happy lives, and he desired a partnership in their spiritual riches. He saw children learning diligently, with barely anything to hold body and soul together. He saw mothers desperately trying to feed their growing broods, and he saw the effects of malnutrition on the children’s’ health. Yet he saw the shining souls

The lesson is obvious to us. If we want great things to happen, the place to start is by providing food and meals for others. The connection that is made through these meals has the power to effect great things.

One day, he saw a poor man, dressed in rags, walking down one of the alleys of the Old City. He reached into his pocket, taking out some money to give it to him. The person took the money and returned down the alley, to a crippled beggar sitting at the side of the road, and passed on the donation. Mr. Strauss was no stranger to poverty, having grown up with want in the state of Georgia in the US. His philanthropy started as a young man and he was always looking for opportunities to help. In the American depression of 1893, he started soup kitchens in the US to help the hungry and poor. When tuberculosis epidemics were shown to be connected to unpasteurized milk,

he financed the Nathan Strauss Pasteurized milk laboratory to provide pasteurized milk to children to combat infant mortality. He also opened the Tuberculosis Preventorium for Children here in Lakewood, for children who had contracted tuberculosis, but had not shown any symptoms. However, Jerusalem and its honorable poor was in another league and he took the whole issue to heart. One of the few rich people in Jerusalem at the time was Reb Sholom Roth z”l, who had also seen the poverty of Jerusalem and had opened a soup kitchen, a Bais HaTavshil, in his house. However, he knew he could not support it indefinitely and Mr. Nathan Strauss was invited to come and see what he was available for the poor of Jerusalem. He saw tables laden with people eating, and others waiting in line for portions to take home to family members. When he heard that they served between 400 and 500 meals daily, with meat only served on Shabbos, he immediately told Reb Sholom that he would pay to increase the daily meals amount to 1000 and that they should give meat twice weekly, besides for on Shabbos. He also paid for a new building and modern kitchens to be equipped for the use of the Bais HaTavshil and he set up a regular transfer of funds from his account in the US to the Anglo-Palestine bank in Jerusalem.

Nathan Strauss often tried to involve his brother Isadore in his philanthropy in Jerusalem, but he was not inclined to the same charities as his brother. Nathan would send the money from his private account, not from the partnership, because his brother refused all of his entreaties. He invited him to come‫‏‬along in 1912 to see the new building that he had set up, hoping that his brother would be impressed by what had been done. ‫סורפ אלה דווקייל לישבת‬ ‫בערל‏‬ ‫ךמחל‏‬ As the two of them toured the new building, Isadore remained passive, and was not too excited about the whole thing. As they left the building, Nathan tripped on the steps and he broke his foot. He was rushed to the hospital and he was told that he would be laid up for some weeks. Isadore teased his brother, saying “look at the thanks that you received from your soup kitchen”. Isadore left Palestine to conduct some business in Europe, before leaving for England on the final leg of their journey. Both brothers had planned to return together on a new ship that was making its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on Isru Chag Pesach of the year 5672. This was the most luxurious boat of its time, on which tickets were sold to the wealthiest members of the social scene in New York of its time. Jacob Astor, Benjamin Guggenheim and the Strauss brothers were amongst the famous names slated to travel on the maiden journey of this Paradise of the ocean that was newly launched. Nathan Strauss was obviously prevented from joining this voyage, and his brother used that fact as a sign that his brother was foolhardy for investing so much in this Bais HaTavshil in Jerusalem. Obviously, we know the truth. Isadore and his wife Ida were among the casualties of the Titanic, when five days into its maiden voyage, it crashed into an iceberg and sank, drowning most of its passengers, including the rich and influential titans of industry, Mr. and Mrs. Strauss. Nathan’s breaking his foot at the Bais HaTavshil he had helped found saved his life. As he sat Shiva for his brother’s tragic death, one thought occupied his mind, “his donation to the Bais HaTavshil was what stood between him and a watery grave”. Thereafter, he doubled his donations to the Bais HaTavshil and his wife even sold her jewelry to support the poor of Jerusalem. His will included the bequest of two thirds of his immense wealth for the poor of Jerusalem and the town Netanya on the Mediterranean coast was named for him. The Bais HaTavshil is singly credited with saving not only Nathan’s life, but the lives of all of those who benefited from his largesse during the years following this story.

You’re smack in the middle of a high-intensity interval workout and you suddenly feel a sharp ﬆabbing pain in your side. It’s nice to have some idea what causes a side ﬆitch to hit you, but it’s even more important to know how to handle one if it happens. What should you do? Stop running or exercising, of course, and calm your breathing. Inﬆead, take slow deep, controlled breaths. Stretching the side that’s painful is also helpful. Moﬆ side ﬆitches are on the right side, so ﬆretch by raising your right hand toward the sky and tilting your body toward the left. Once the discomfort ceases, ease back into what you’re doing by walking for a bit before picking up speed. If you have a side ﬆitch that doesn’t go aware after a few minutes, get it checked out as soon as possible. You wouldn’t want to miﬆake a side ﬆitch for heart-related pain. *Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.
