At Yad L'Achim, we help rescue Jewish women and children trapped in Arab villages. What does that have to do with tefillos at mekomos hakedoshim?

Answer: For many years, we sent talmidei chachamim to daven for our success in our work of pidyon shvuyim. As more people heard about these tefillos, they asked to add their names to the list. We then opened it up to the public, so that anyone could submit their names—with one rule: It's free to submit names for tefillah.

There should never be a charge for tefillah. When people come to our website to submit names for free, they will learn about the good work Yad L'Achim does and help spread the word to others.

We have received thousands upon thousands of names in past years, and many people have even shared with us that they had good news after our tefillah campaign.

Lag B'Omer is this Tuesday, May 9 and we will once again be sending talmidei chachamim to Meron to daven at the kever of Reb Shimon bar Yochai daven for all who submit their names for tefillah through Yad L'Achim.

Computer Doctor

I’m calling in with a short anecdote that left a deep impression on me. It made me so proud to be a member of Klal Yisroel, and I hope to share that feeling with others who read this column.

I have a laptop computer at home, and I use it like a typewriter. It isn’t connected to anything. It can’t do anything, other than type my chiddushim and save them in the correct folders.

The laptop served me well for many years, until one day…it just didn’t!

There was something very wrong with my computer and I knew that it needed emergency ‘medical’ attention. The thought of losing years of chiddushim and Torah pamphlets was more than I could bear. I packed up my rebellious laptop and headed to the closest computer store.

“This thing just stopped working, from one minute to the next!” I told Phil, the computer technician standing behind the counter. “I don’t know what’s wrong.”

Phil looked me up and down, taking in my obviously Jewish appearance at a glance. He pointed to my hat and peyos, and said, “I’ve got lots of customers who look exactly like you.”

Okay. That was an interesting comment, but it had no bearing on my ailing laptop, as far as I could tell.

Phil opened the computer, expertly clicked a few but-

tons, and then smiled. “Just as I thought. You don’t have internet connection, right?”

“No,” I replied with pride.

Phil turned around and waved his hands at the cubbies full of laptops, stacked one on top of the other. “See this?” he asked dramatically. “The owners of these computers look and act just like you. They don’t have internet. They don’t have access to anything.”

I nodded, though I couldn’t imagine what he was trying to tell me.

“Computer programs get updated automatically via internet connection,” Phil explained. “When you’re not connected, your programs don’t get updated. Eventually, they crash.”

Oh. That made sense.

“I’ve got loads of customers who bring in their computers every few weeks,” Phil continued, while he tagged my order and jotted down a few instructions. “I update their programs and then they’re good to go, until the next visit. I’ll fix up your laptop, good as new, but you’ll have to come back every so often for a tune-up.”

I watched as Phil taped a receipt to my laptop and then stuck it into one of the crowded cubbies behind him. “See? Your computer joined its friends. You can pick it up late afternoon.”

I watched my kosher, unconnected, internet-free computer resting between its good friends, and I felt a surge of pride welling up inside of me.

“Hashem!” I cried soundlessly. “Nobody in the world could imagine life without the internet. Only Your loyal, pure children have remained true to You through all the challenges and temptations!”
