Get Found in the Minutiae
D
on’t sweat the small stuff, they say. It’s as axiomatic as not being able to see the forest for the trees. What both of these sayings have in common is that they encourage people to overlook the little things in life and focus on the big picture. Just as a person looking at a digital photo won’t understand the image if he’s staring at the tiny pixelated dots, when we focus on all the tiny details of life it’s easy to miss how those details come together to form a greater situation. In the grand scheme of things, small difficulties seem to make sense as integral parts of the larger development which they won’t if viewed on their own. However, this time I’d like to suggest focusing on the details. It can be very important in some ways, so let’s get started. As many of you know, my columns appear in various magazines across North America. My local magazine also usually includes an excerpt from one of R’ Paysach Krohn’s fantastic Maggid series. My wife likes both of these items (no word on which one she likes more) so I try to make sure we have it in the house before Shabbos. In fact, I make an effort to pick it up before we travel so we have it with us. One such week, we took a rare trip to my sister’s home for Shabbos. man whose Tefillen had been stolen. In the story, they were found by someone who wondered how he could track down the owner of the Tefillen based only on the initials embroidered on the bag: Alef Zayin Gimel. When I read that, I got a chill. Not because I was nervous the Tefillen would not be returned. Come on, this is a Jewish story - of course it will have a happy ending! The reason I got a chill was because I knew someone whose Tefillen bag was embroidered with the same three initials: my grandfather, R’ Abba Zalka Gewirtz z”l, in whose home I was reading the story! It was more than a coincidence. I began to think of all the factors that had to fall into place for this to happen. First of all, I had brought the magazine with us on this trip. Second, the story that was printed “just happened” to be the one it was. They prepare stories months in advance and this one actually should have been published earlier if not for some mixup the publisher told me happened which delayed it. On top of that, R’ Paysach Krohn, in choosing a fictitious name for his protagonist perhaps decades ago, chose one that matched my grandfather’s initials, and the bag which had been embroidered with my Zaidy’s initials was probably done years before that! When I took the time to think things that had to come together get that little nod from HaShem running the world and everything

חלומ’ט פון דעם לעצטען מאל וואס איך האב אים געטראפן ,אין זיין וואקלדיגן ביידל אויף דער שיף איבער צוויי גלעזלעך ברוינפן. מען דארף נישט זיין קיין פסיכאלאג זיך פארצושטעלן אז צוקערס האט זיך צוריקגעבענקט צו זיינע גוטע צייטן ,אין די פינסטערע טעג פון דער צווייטער וועלט-קריג ,ווען ער איז געווען דער וויצע צום הויפט קאמאנדיר וואס האט געוועלטיגט איבער דער געטא פון ריגע. ער האט זיכער געדענקט מיט נאסטאלגיע דעם הויכפונקט פון יענע יארן ,ווען ער האט געהאט די מאכט און רעספעקט פון יעדן וואס האט אים געזען רייטן אויף זיין פערד אין די גאסן פון דער געטא, מיט אן אנגעלאדנטער רעוואלווער אונטערן ארעם און אנגעטון אין א שווארצן פילאטן מונדיר. אין דער געטא האט ער געשפירט ווי אין זיינע הענט ליגט דאס לעבן פון אלע זיינע אונטערטאנען ,וואס איז ,לויט די עדות פון די איבערלעבער ,ליידער געווען די ווירקליכקייט .ער האט גע’הרג’עט און געשאסן רעכטס און לינקס אן קיין טראפעלע רחמנות .הוי ,די בענקעניש וואס ער האט געשפירט יעצט ,ווען פון א קליין פענסטערל אין א פארהאקט הייזקעלע האט ער געדארפט פארקויפן בילעטן פאר טוריסטן וואס וועלן אים צואווארפן עטליכע קראזרוס. און פלוצלינג שפראצט ארויס זיין אומגעראכטענע ישועה ,אין פארעם פון אן עסטרייכישער ביזנעסמאן .ער טרעפט מיט אים א גוטע שפראך ,און קען זיך ערלויבן צו שמועסן מיט אים איבער זייער געמיינזאמער פארגאנגענהייט ,דינענדיג אינעם מיליטער אין ‘יענע גוטע טעג’ .אויפן עסטרייכער איז קענטיג אז ער באהאלט עפעס, ער רעדט ווייניג ,אבער מיט דעם אלעמען פארשטייט צוקערס אז עס איז אים געקומען אונטער די הענט די פריינטשאפט מיט א גביר Page 52
אדיר וואס זוכט איינצושטעקן זיין געלט אין דעם געגנט. ווער ווייסט ,אפשר דורך דאס געלט פון קינצלע און זיינע פריינט ,די רייכע אינוועסטירער פון אייראפע ,וועט ער ענדליך זיך ארויסדרייען פון דער ארימקייט וואס ער קען שוין די לעצטע יארן, און צוריק באקומען זיין אמאליגן סטאטוס פון א רייכער מאן ,אן אנגעזעענער מיטגליד אין זיין שטאט און געגנט ,ווייט אוועק פון די אידישע ארגאניזאציעס וועלכע מאכן אים שווער דאס לעבן שוין צענליגער יארן. די אלע געדאנקען זענען דורכגעלאפן מיין מח בשעת איך בין געפארן פון שטאט צענטער צום געגנט פון ריווייראו ,וואו צוקערס האט געוואוינט. טרעפן דאס הייזקע איז אנגעקומען שנעל און גרינג .איך האב איבערגעלאזט מיין אויטא נעבן דעם הויז און באטראכט דעם גאנצן ארום .מיטן ערשטן בליק האט מען געקענט זען אז צוקערס שטעלט נישט איין .ער האט געוואוינט אין א הויז וואס האט אויסגעזען ווי א קליינע פעסטונג .א הויכער מויער האט ארומגענומען דעם גאנצן שטח פון זיין הויז .א גרויסער הונט-וואלף האט געהיטן אויפן אייזערנעם אריינגאנג ,און בשעת זיינע ווילדע ,הויכע בילערייען האט ער ארויסגעשטעקט זיין לאנגן צונג און געוויזן זיינע שארפע ציין. דאס הויז אליין איז געווען געבויט פון פשוט’ע ציגל ,געפארבט ווייס. ביים עק פונעם שטח האב איך באמערקט א קליין בודקע מיט א בלעכענעם דאך ,וועלכע האט אויסגעזען ווי א קליינער גאראזש אדער ארבעט-פלאץ .דער גארטן ארום דעם הויז איז געווען נאכגעלאזט, אן קיין גראז אדער בלומען ,נאר עטליכע קליינע ביימעלעך האבן געלאזט א שאטן הינטער זיך.

“א גוטן טאג ,איך זוך הער צוקערס ”,האב איך זיך אנגערופן צו א אינגל ,זעט אויס נאך א קינד פון דער צוקערס פאמיליע ,וואס איז געשטאנען אין פארנט פונעם הויז .דער אינגל איז אריין אין שטוב מעלדן וועגן דעם גאסט וואס איז אנגעקומען ,און צוקערס איז גלייך ארויסגעקומען .א שמייכל איז געווען אויסגעשפרייט אויף זיין געזיכט פון אויער צו אויער אינעם סעקונדע וואס ער האט מיר דערזען דורך זיינע דיקע אויגן-גלעזער. צוקערס איז געווען אנגעטון אין אפגעריבענע ארבעטס- קליידער ,נישט מסודר און נאכגעלאזט. “הער קינצלע ”,האט ער זיך אנגערופן“ ,וואספארא איבעראשונג דו האסט מיר געמאכט .איך פריי זיך דיר צו זען!” ער האט זיך דערנענטערט צו מיר מיט שנעלע טריט ,נאכן זיכער מאכן אז דער שטריק וואס בינדט צו דעם הינט צום אייזערנעם שטאנג איז באפעסטיגט. דער ‘פארשטארבענער’ האט מיר גערייכט די האנט ,דריקנדיג עס פיל שטארקער ווי ביים ערשטן מאל וואס מיר האבן זיך געטראפן ,ווי מיר וואלטן ווען געווען אלטע גוטע פריינט. “ברוך הבא .קום ,קום אריין ”.ער האט מיר פריינטליך אריינגערופן און געעפנט די טיר צו זיין הויז. צווישן די יארן פון תש”א און תש”ד ,די טראגישע יארן ווען צוקערס ער האט אויסגעפירט זיינע שרעקליכע רציחות ,האט ער זיך אנגעזאמלט אוצרות מיט געלט ,דאס האב און גוטס פון זיינע אידישע קרבנות .ווי עס זעט אבער אויס האט ער רוב זאכן געדארפט איבערלאזן אין לאטוויע ווען ער איז אנטלאפן פון דער רויטער ארמיי ,וואס האט ארויסגעשמיסן די דייטשע קרעפטן ,צו די מערב- לענדער .דאס ביסל וואס איז אים יא געלונגען ארויסצונעמען האט ער פארקויפט אויף זיין לאנגן אנטלויף-וועג פון ריגע ביז סאן- פאולא. יעדנפאלס ,אין יאר תשכ”ד האט צוקערס’ס הויז נישט אויסגעזען ווי עס ענטהאלט עפעס איבערבלייבענישן פון דעם גרויסן רויב. ער און זיין פאמיליע האבן געלעבט א פשוט לעבן וואס האט זיך געגרעניצט מיט ארימקייט .ער האט אבער געלעבט אין העכערע סטאנדארטן ווי דעם ארכי-מערדער אייכמאן ימ”ש ,וועלכער האט געוואוינט אין א קליין הייזקע ,אן וואסער און אן עלעקטעריק אין בואנוס-איירעס. פשוט’ע מעבל איז געווען אויסגעשטעלט ביי דער ווענט פונעם Page 53
הויז. צוקערס האט פארגעשטעלט זיין פאמיליע און זיי האבן מיר אלע באגריסט אויף דייטש. אינעם קארידאר וואס האט געפירט צום גאסט-צימער איז געשטאנען א נישט צו גרויסע שאפע .צוקערס האט זיך דארט אפגעשטעלט ,געעפנט איינעם פון די שופלאדן און ארויסגעצויגן א גאנצע פעקל פון מעדאלן און באצירונגען. ‘אה ’,האב איך געטראכט‘ ,יעצט קומט די צייט פון מאכן א גוטן איינדרוק .דער פארשטארבענער פרובירט מיר צו איבערצייגן ווי גרויס ער איז’... אינעם שופלאד איז געלעגן אן ערך פון פופצן מעדאלן ,וואס האט גוט פארגעשטעלט די איבערקערענישן וואס זענען פארגעקומען אין זיין היימלאנד דורכאויס די לעצטע צען יאר .צוקערס האט זיך געגרויסט און בארימט מיט אלע .מיט קענטיגער שטאלץ האט ער מיר געוויזן דעם טייערן מעדאל וואס ער האט באקומען נאך דער פלי-רייזע קיין גאמביע ,אפריקע. דארט איז אויך געלעגן א רוסישער מעדאל וואס ער האט באקומען אין יאר ת”ש ,ווען לאטוויע איז געווען אונטער רוסישער קאנטראל און ער האט געארבעט אין אן עראפלאן-פאבריק .כאטש ער האט שטארק פיינט געהאט די רוסן ,האט ער זיך געגרויסט מיט זייער מעדאל .אבער רוב מעדאלן זענען געווען ‘ריינע’ ,דייטשע און פיל פון זיי האבן געהאט אויף זיך האקן-קרייצן .אין יענע סעקונדעס האב איך נישט געוואלט טראכן אין וועלכע אומשטענדן ער האט דאס באקומען. “און קוק וואס איך האב דא!” האט ער אויסגעשריגן ווען ער האט געענדיגט ווייזן אלע זיינע מעדאלן .ער האט געעפנט נאך א שופלאד, אנטפלעקנדיג א גאנצער מאגאזין פון געווער :א רעוואלווער ,א ביקס ,האלב-אטאמאטישע געווער און אטאמאטישע געווער. “די באהאלטענע-פאליציי פון בראזיל ,דופעס ,האט מיר געגעבן אן ערלויבעניש צו האלטן די אלע זאכן ”,האט ער זיך אנגערופן צו מיר מיט אומבאהאלטענער גאווה“ ,זאלסט וויסן אז איך קען זיך גאר גוט באשיצן!” ‘וואס מיינט ער דערמיט צו זאגן?’ האב איך זיך געוואונדערט.

Not replacing lost fluids can cause you to feel tired, headache, brain fog, and a depressed mood. What should you drink? If you exercised for under an hour, water is a suitable hydration beverage. Longer than that and you need electrolytes. Coconut water provides potassium, an electrolyte you lose when you sweat. It is a bit lower in sodium relative to a sports drink, so add a pinch of salt.
