Take Back Lakewood Working toward a positive solution for a better Lakewood What role does the Township Committee play?

The Township Commi�ee (TC) in Lakewood is comprised of 5 elected officials who are elected to 3 year terms. They are each paid a salary of approximately $28,000 per year plus health benefits for the part �me work that they do which includes ��ending two TC mee�ngs each month in addi�on to being liaisons to the various boards of the township. Each year the TC members vote on which one of them will serve as mayor for a 1 year term. The mayor is in charge of se�ng the agenda for the mee�ngs and therefore has the ability to work on proposing ordinances that could promote posi�ve changes to Lakewood if they so desire although ul�mately each ordinance would need 3 votes to pass. O�en, ordinances that could fix problems and enact posi�ve change never make it to the TC for a vote and therefore a mayor who is interested in promo�ng fixes for Lakewood and ac�vely champions new ordinances could have a strong posi�ve impact for the residents of LKWD. The TC appoints members to the Planning Board (PB) & Zoning Board (ZBA). Those members meet between once and twice a month and hear applica�ons looking for variances and zoning changes. When many residents of Lakewood spoke up in the past few months asking for the dense building to slow down, each of the commi�ees passed the buck to the other. The PB & ZBA pointed to TC ordinances such as the one that allows schools to be built on any residen�al lot in town (yes, even next door to your house). The TC pointed to the PB & ZBA for approving too many variances and zoning changes. In the past, many zone change requests were sent to and approved by the TC. In 2015, the TC decided to stop gran�ng zoning changes and since then the ZBA agenda has been chock full of zone change requests. At the most recent (12/5/16) ZBA mee�ng the applica�ons on the

agenda totaled an astounding 228 houses (456 families & 912 cars!). The TC says they are powerless to restrict the ZBA’s abili�es but we call on them to both remind the board members of the precarious situa�on that LKWD is in as well as put new members on the board who will agrees to follow the law and stop approving illegal spot-zoning. One of the problems with the current Township form of government with 5 commi�ee members & a rota�ng mayor is that there is no one person who takes responsibility for everything. The mayors seat is not voted in directly rather it is decided between the 5 TC members. His term is only one year and therefore it is difficult for any meaningful progress to be made in addi�on to a lack of accountability. Imagine if there was a new president chosen every year by the senate. We all know that in the first few months they are just ge�ng acclimated and the last few months they are in lame duck mode. Addi�onally, with a salary of just $28,000, each commi�ee member must have another job to earn a proper living. With the TC being just a part �me job, there is a limit to how much the commi�ee members can devote themselves to the thorough and in depth leadership that Lakewood sorely needs. While the TC members are excellent at helping out the individual, Lakewood is lacking in a longer term full �me accountable leader who has the power and �me to work on a vision that will take into account the impact of everything that is going on. magine my surprise when I drove down the street one day to see a smiley face staring back at me from a telephone pole. Now, a plain smiley face would have been one thing, but this one was sad and crying. It turned out to be an advertisement for an organization that helps cancer patients, and they used the hashtag #feelalong to convey that we should endeavor to feel other people’s pain. I was a bit surprised that a group I understood to be comprised of many people who eschew smartphones would use emojis (round yellow faces displaying various emotions used to convey feeling in written electronic text) but I guess that only shows just how pervasive the concept is. It’s certainly a far cry from 1982 when Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist Scott Fahlman invented the “emoticon,” a way of identifying a joke without having to write, “I am joking.” He posted on an online bulletin board: “I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-) Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark those that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use :-( .” It used to be a game for people to guess what you’d typed sideways, and to see how clever and creative you could be, but today’s high-tech animated figures don’t keep you guessing much. That said, (and despite the fact that Dr. Fahlman dislikes the new-fangled emojis) the underlying principle is very sound. Studies have shown that when writing e-mails, emoticons such as smiles have produced better results in terms of motivating people to honor requests. They convey a warmth and relationship bond which works wonders. The funny thing is that with all the cutesie images, we often forget that they are poor alternatives to Week of Jan. 01, 2017

the real thing: a genuine smile from a real human being! I think people don’t understand the power of the smile. But don’t just take my word for it. In Sing You Righteous, R’ Avigdor Miller z”l wrote that in addition to the feeling of respect that a smile engenders, “The smile enters the recipient’s mind and stimulates all the glands to produce their secretions in the most beneficial proportions. Every one of the thousands of intricate processes of physical functions is optimally motivated.” Wow. Did you ever think that when you smile at someone you were actually making them physically healthier and giving them tangible pleasure? How about a frown or angry face? Doesn’t that cause your adrenaline to pump in a fight-or-flight response? We have tremendous power in our expressions and we must learn to wield it properly. On Chanuka, we eat dairy products because Yehudis fed cheese and wine to Holofernes, a Syrian-Greek general who had besieged her town and when he was drunk she chopped off his head. The commentaries say that one who eats dairy on Chanuka will have his sins pardoned. The Bnai Yissaschar even says that it is a merit for healing from sickness. Is this really simply because someone in history used cheese to put some wicked fellow to sleep? I’d like to suggest that the idea is not simply that she fed him cheese to put him to sleep, but that this woman risked her life to try and help others. Once she was out of her city, she could have left and gone somewhere else. But she stood her ground in the enemy camp and followed through with her plan to rescue her people, giving her an honored placed in the pantheon of Jewish heroines (pardon the word choice, please.)
