Parshas Vayechi
T
he Ba’al HaTurim explains that the gematria (numerical value) of the word vayechi (lived) is seventeen. The Torah is telling us that Vayechi — the life of Yaakov was seventeen years. Up until that point, he had suffered so much that his years couldn’t rightfully be called a life. The sum total of the years that he spent without torment was the seventeen years that he lived in Mitzrayim. That was his life. With this, the Ba’al HaTurim gives us a perspective on the life of Yaakov: he had a rough existence. For the first sixty-three years of his life, he suffered at the hands of his twin brother Esav. From the time that they were in the womb together, they fought about this world and the World to Come. That period ended when he ran for his life because Esav was plotting his murder. Yaakov then spent the next fourteen years hiding out as a fugitive in Yeshivas Shem v’Ever. When it was time to marry, he found himself in the home of Lavan, “the devious one.” For the next twenty years, Yaakov was an unwelcome intruder in a culture alien to his nature, eating at the table of a father-in-law who attempted in any way possible to swindle and cheat him. That period came to an end when Lavan chased him down. Once again, he escaped as a fugitive. Immediately after that, he met up with Esav, who had set out with four hundred men to kill him. Barely escaping with his life, he settled in Eretz Yisrael, only to have the tragedy of Dina’s kidnapping befall him. After this, his most beloved and precious son, Yosef, was stolen from him. And for the next twenty-two years, he lived in a state of mourning, not sure if Yosef was alive or dead. Finally at the age of 130, he settled in Mitzrayim, where he enjoyed seventeen years of peace.

difficult life. Surely he could enjoy this world and not become distracted by the glitz and the glitter. So why did he need to suffer? The answer to this question can be understood with a mashal.
³ THE GYM AND THE SPA Picture a very exclusive health club with two separate sections. On the left is the spa, and on the right is the gym. The spa is where people relax. Whether sitting in the steam room, lying in the Jacuzzi, or lounging in the sauna, the mode of activity is to loosen up and enjoy. The gym is where people exercise. They push themselves, they strain, and they challenge their bodies.
The Ba’al HaTurim is telling us that the Torah uses the expression, “And Yaakov lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years,” to teach us this point. He suffered so acutely during the earlier part of his life that it couldn’t be called living. This was the first time that Yaakov lived peacefully, without affliction.
Imagine that the first time you visit this health club, you decide to go straight to the spa. By mistake, instead of turning left, you turn right and find yourself in the gym. You look around, and all you see are red-faced men lifting heavy loads, grunting, groaning, and sweating away. The first thought that comes to your mind is, “What kind of lousy spa is this? What is all of this straining? The red faces? The grunting and groaning? I thought people are supposed to be lying around, chilling out, enjoying?”
This concept becomes difficult to understand when we focus on who Yaakov Avinu was. Chazal tell us that Yaakov was the greatest of the Avos. He was born with a father and grandfather who were his rebbeim. From the time of his earliest youth, he spent his days in the tent of Torah, completely immersed in the sea of learning. through all the challenges of life: resisting temptations, choosing that which is right, and thereby shaping ourselves into who we will be for eternity. We were put into this world to grow. This world is the gym. The World to Come is the spa. It is the place where we will enjoy the fruits of the work that we put in while in this world. It is the place of reward. The reason that many people have difficulty understanding life is because they confuse this world for the World to Come. As a result, they have many, many questions. Why does man have to work so hard? Why are there so many challenges? Why is there suffering in the world? Once a person clearly understands the purpose of life, many of his questions naturally fall away. But until a person adopts an Olam HaBa approach to life, nothing makes sense — not work, not challenges, and surely not pain and suffering. If you ask a person who regularly works out if he enjoys the training, the answer will be a resounding “Yes!” But it is work. It is focused and often difficult. To grow one must strain. No pain, no gain. On the whole, the activity may be enjoyable, but it often isn’t easy. HASHEM created us to use this world for its intended purpose — to grow. Should life be fun? The answer is yes. But it is focused. It has a plan and a purpose.
³ GEDOLIM DIDN’T HAVE IT EASY We often take the attitude that gedolim had it easy. Sure to be Avraham Avinu, that would be a cinch. After all, HASHEM spoke directly to him. He knew where he was headed in life. For him, life was a walk in the park. But me, I suffer. I have it rough. The reality is that every human suffers. That is a part of life. But it’s not by accident, and it’s not because HASHEM isn’t clever enough to figure out a way to create man without pain and suffering. Quite the opposite, these situations were hand-crafted as part of the challenges that man needs to grow. This life is the great laboratory of growth. When a person understands this perspective, life itself has meaning and significance. He will understand both the purpose of his existence and the reason for his life settings. With this vantage point, he can truly enjoy his stay on the planet, knowing the meaning and depth behind everything that he GET THE APP! lives through.

In his eagerness and anticipation, he could have walked all night, not stopping for anything until he got home. But it was growing dark, the road was deserted, and a driving rain was falling. at the first inn by the wayside and asked the frail old innkeeper if he could spend the night. The old man was about to admit him into the inn, when a young woman appeared at his side, and, to the obvious astonishment of her husband, firmly refused. "There is no room for you here tonight!" she said sharply. "Find somewhere else to stay." "An old man with a young wife," pondered the melamed "There is something about that that is significant." He decided to go no further but prepared to spend the night huddled close to a corner of the inn, in a dry spot beneath the eaves of the roof, to see what his Rebbe had meant. However, as the saying goes, G-d is in the details and their G-dliness is evident in the particulars of how they provide their support. From deliveries of meals to people in need at home, to the sensitive nature of discreetly providing challos for the indigent on Friday afternoon. The pickup of leftovers from stores to give at no cost to those who would require it, without the embarrassment of tzedoko, as well as the well appointed Hachnosas Orchim rooms, with the small touches that make the visitors feel welcome, are all part of the seichel that the Bais HaTavshil and Hachnosas Orchim of Lakewood use to follow in Yosef HaTzadik’s footsteps as the משביר לכל עם הארץ.

As night fell, the melamed took a position outside of his home, in the shadow of a large tree. In the pale light of the moon, he saw the figure of a young non-Jewish looking man approach his house, and knock on the window. The face of his wife appeared at the window and shortly thereafter the door silently opened. Hours later, the youth left, as stealthily as he had come. His heart heavy, the melamed would have turned his back, and left his home forever, had not the memory of his Rebbe's words restrained him. With a great effort, he calmed himself and waited. The next morning, after Shacharis, Reb Groinem knocked on the door of his home, arrayed in fine clothing, bearing gifts, a father returned to his family. Everything was as he had dreamt a thousand times. His wife ran towards him, her face radiant,

"My husband, my husband!" His children, numerous and beautiful, grown beyond recognition, surrounded him, drowned him in kisses and tears. In the midst of all the melamed stood silent, sick at heart, remembering what he had heard and seen yesterday. Eventually, when he was left alone with his wife, he could restrain himself no longer. "What is the meaning of the rumors that I heard in Shul? What is happening here?" "Oy vey! You also heard these rumors" his wife's worn face was full of sorrow. "You left us for so many years, you must have forgotten? Have you forgotten our youngest son?" That is when Reb Groinem realized that in all the turmoil of his homecoming he had not noticed the absence of his son, who had been a small boy when he left. "The Duke took him when I could not pay our rent. He said it was a security on our debt. For months, for years, I cried and pleaded with him to stop this cruel punishment. But it was no use. He has been in the Duke's house ever since, living with the goyim, learning their ways and being trained to hate us and what we stand for. But Hashem has been good to us and he is still a fine Yiddishe boy. Every night, he sneaks away from the duke's manor and comes home, and I have studied with him, a little chumash, berachos and the basics of Yiddishkeit to mitigate the effects of his surroundings. It wasn't much," she finished simply. "But at least he knows he is a Jew. Now do you understand?" Wordlessly, the melamed nodded. He fully understood. Now he knew what his Rebbe was teaching him, that the price he had paid for his Rebbe's advice was negligible compared to the benefits that he had gained. It was not only that G d had given the Rebbe to see further than other men, beyond time and place, though that was marvelous enough. What seemed even more wonderful to Reb Groinem was the wisdom with which the Rebbe had seen into his heart. Had he paid less dearly for the Rebbe's advice, he could never have heeded his words in that last terrible trial. He would have trusted the rumors and his own eyes and his life would have collapsed totally. But the greatest of all, and here the melamed shook his head in humble amazement, was how G d had given him—such an ordinary Jew—the strength to give up his last ruble when it had seemed easier to sacrifice his life.

Remember, the digestive process is pulling blood away from your brain. When you pick up a pair of weights and start doing sets, more blood is diverted from your brain to your muscles. So, if you change positions too quickly, you could feel lightheaded or even pass out. Grabbing a small snack likely won’t have the same impact as a full meal. So, if you have to eat and then workout, keep the quantity that you eat small and eat the rest after your workout.

f you pay attention, you can find life lessons in the smallest, most off-the-cuff remarks people make. It makes sense, too, as they’re not thinking about it so their statements speak volumes about human nature. Of course, one who is careful about how they view things will be much more studied in their comments as well, but the following true story illustrates my point.
I had gone to the Post Office to mail a package for my wife. It was going international and the woman behind the counter told me I needed to fill out a customs form. As I did so, she helped another customer who also had a package to mail. The customer placed the box on the scale and, as she did so, commented that she wasn’t sure the right way to place it (which way should the bar code face, should the long side be perpendicular to the scale, etc.) That’s when I heard the postal worker make the remark that got me thinking: With a wry smile, almost a smirk, she said, “There is no right way.” That fatalistic argument raised my hackles and I realized she could just as easily have said, with a genuine smile of kindness, “There is no wrong way.” The point she was trying to make was that it didn’t matter which way the package was placed. She would have to weigh it and scan it but there was no right or wrong way to do it that the customer was expected to know. The difference however, is astounding. Saying there is “no right way” conveys negativity. No matter what you try, you will be wrong. On the other hand, saying there’s “no wrong way” is a positive message that says you couldn’t mess it up if you tried. It’s more reassuring and therefore the nicer, more proper way to speak. The Torah’s ways, we say, are “ways of pleasantness” which Week of December 24, 2017
means the Torah way is to choose the nicer way; the way that doesn’t belittle others or make them uncomfortable. The Torah tells us to honor our parents and to fear our parents. However, when it comes to honoring them, the father is mentioned first. When it comes to fearing them, the mother is mentioned first. Chazal say this is because it is more common for one to fear his father and honor his mother. Why is that? It’s because of the way that “fathers” and “mothers” are viewed in the Torah. While we won’t apply this to any specific individuals, as a general rule, fathers are considered to be more demanding while mothers are more nurturing. The masculine traits in the Torah are ones of conquest while the feminine ones are traits of acceptance. Any man or woman can exhibit these traits, but though the masculine ones may bring others to fear you, only the feminine ones will cause them to respect and honor you, which is a much higher level of regard to achieve. Thus, the Torah tells us we must “honor our fathers and mothers” because we’re more likely to fear our fathers. A person must, “fear his mother and father,” and give weight to their words, because we’re less likely to take seriously the demands of one who is generally accepting and loving of us. Given the choice, however, in the long-run, it is better to exhibit the traits that show acceptance and love than those of displeasure, which is why the words of that woman in the Post Office grated on my ears so much. We should work to be positive, upbeat, people, and not cynical and jaded. It may be easier to be negative, but it’s not worth it. Being negative and viewing others in that light only causes pain and hurt. It drags us down along with everyone else and
