e burst onto the scene in 2007 as a freshman senator igniting hope in many. His slogan was a ‘’change we can believe in’’. he became the first African American president. Eight years later we look back at his presidency. He started his first term with democrats in control of both chambers in congress. he took advantage of that by ramming through his signature achievement O b a m a c a r e without even one republican voting for it. It was a major step towards socializing the health industry. One of the things Obama promised was that it would cut premiums but instead they skyrocketed. It was a major issue in the presidential campaign and trump took advantage of the never popular bill. Promising to repeal it a promise he will have an easy time keeping. Being that the republicans control congress and are currently looking for a plan to replace Obamas signature achievement. He failed to pass immigration reform instead he tried to do it with executive orders witch trump can undo with a swipe of his pen. He put in place many regulations. As a radical environmentalist he upheld the keystone and Dakota access pipeline witch would have created many jobs. And would have lessened our need for oil from the unstable middle east. Well in his first days trump gave the go ahead for both pipelines. Under the Obama administration the E.P.A’S power grew immensely. Well trump froze new regulations and plans on cutting at least seventy Week of Feb. 05, 2017

five percent of regulations. And he is reigning the power of the E.P.A., there are reports that he plans on cutting its budget by one billion dollars. Another thing Obama did was creating daylight between Israel and America betraying them at the U.N in his last days contrary to decades of American policy. In an interview trump declared the relationship between the U.S. and Israel repaired. So what will Obamas legacy be after being replaced by a president who is his polar opposite and plans of undoing most of his major accomplishments. Well Obama promised change. Let’s look at the change that occurred. Domestically race relations are more strained than in decades after a number of high profile police shootings of unarmed black men and riots. Overseas the world is more unstable than a long time, under him relations with Russia have been strained. China has become more aggressive and is building illegal artificial islands in the south china sea which threatens one of the world’s most important shipping lanes. And obviously the middle east which is being torn apart he created a power vacuum by pulling out of Iraq too early which ISIS took advantage of. He weakened American leadership by his inaction especially in Syria and famously backing off his red line. These changes are not a change I would believe in. but history will be kind to Obama as the country’s first African American president.

This coming week has 3 public meetings with the Zoning, Planning and Township Committee each holding a meeting. To give readers an idea of what type of applications are being presented at the meetings, see a brief synopsis below. Many applicants have been pushing off their applications numerous times so the meetings have very few applications as developers hope to ride out the wave and sneak in their large applications once (they hope) the scrutiny dies down. See further details on the agendas on our website and at firstamendmentactivist.blogspot.com. #3978—1 Duplex on Finchley Blvd close to River Ave. This was approved in 2016 without going to the planning board after the engineer made a mistake in applying the ordinance. It is now finally being brought to the zoning board for the required approval. #4009—1 Duplex on undersized lot on Cedarbridge between Arlington and Melville with a number of variances. #4003—30 houses where only 9 are permitted (60 families, 120 cars) between Drake and Cross and between Nieman Rd. and White St. Currently zoned R-40—this is an attempt at illegal spot-zoning unless the applicant can prove that the density variance is a positive improvement for the area. #4004—1 single family house on Pine Blvd. on an undersized lot with side yard setbacks variances requested. #4013—Route 88—8 duplexes on undersized lots (16 families, 32 cars) #3958A—7 houses on a cul-de-sac on Pine Street just east of Albert. (14 families 28 cars) Numerous variances requested. #4014—801 Park Ave—NE corner of Park and E. 8th. Removing an existing house and replacing it with 1 larger house. Numerous variances requested. The Planning board will adopt new rules and procedures governing their proceedings with some similarity to rules recently adopted by the zoning board. There is a request to designate E. County Line Road as an area in need of redevelopment. On 12/22/16 the Township Committee passed a resolution requesting the Planning Board to review the County Line area and designate it an area in need of redevelopment. The purported purpose is to approve 13 new office buildings and give them tax abate-

ments for a few years before they will eventually begin paying taxes. The planning board would likely approve this and then the Township Committee would be allowed to pass various ordinances affecting the area since it was determined to be ‘in need of redevelopment’. Those words are very broad and lack specificity. Cedarbridge also started off being ‘in need of redevelopment’ and look where that got us. We think the Planning board should vote no until there is more clarity as to what this proposed redevelopment will mean for the residents of E. County Line. If you live on E. County line anywhere East of Route 9 and are concerned about this, come to the meeting where this will be discussed right at the beginning of the meeting at 6:00. Oak street subdivisions will be heard with 9+ applications as part of the Oak Street Core ordinance. Some of these applications are attempting to get approved without sidewalks and work is being done to ensure that ordinances are kept to and sidewalks are built. SD 2173—493 Joe Parker—Continuation meeting— attempting to turn two lots into 4.

County Line -School with a dorm Pursuant to our request, the Township Committee will be voting on an ordinance to require parking for buildings larger than 2 stories in the downtown. In response to 2 more of our requests, Mayor Coles has announced that he will begin requiring the Township to advertise the upcoming meetings and agendas in the Jewish weekly publications in addition to the current APP. The township will also begin requiring that an address be put on the agenda instead of just block and lot numbers. We are continuing to work to ensure that new procedures and ordinances are enacted to ensure a fair process that protects the residents and not just developers. At the last committee meeting Mayor Coles said he welcomes public input. The committee heard a lot of public input on the Lakewood Shopping Village and the overwhelming consensus is that the residents of Lakewood do not want it. We have yet to see an adequate response and intervention from the committee members. We question why the committee has not yet stepped in to ensure that the will of the people is not ignored.

don’t know about you, but to me winter seems to drag on for a very long time. While Autumn or Spring last maybe a month or two, Winter seems to last five or six… years. Now, I’m not complaining, because if it’s not raining or snowing it can be quite nice for driving or looking at. However, the cold can be brutal.

to G-d as we do, is the brutal cold. How can we make sure that we don’t lose all our heat reserves? By closing the door!

It’s times like these that you can hear the refrain, “Shut the door! It’s cold outside.” The proverbial response to that, of course, is: “And if I shut the door will it be warm outside?”

Yes, we have to put up a barrier to control the heat loss, but it isn’t usually practical to build a solid wall to keep in the heat or keep out the cold. That’s because we have occasion to venture out into the world and also to bring others into the warmth of our homes. Being too insular might mean we never get any fresh air, and worse, that when there’s a breach, we don’t know how to repair it.

Obviously, all joking aside, the idea is that since there is a temperature differential between inside the house or building which is hopefully heated, and the outside, which has been designed by G-d to cryogenically preserve anyone outside for longer than 8.3 minutes, closing the door will help keep that differential steady.

Therefore, we make sure to “shut the door.” That means recognizing that there is a difference between inside and out, and doing things because we have determined that we have a good reason to protect the heat. Exposing ourselves entirely to the cold would mean sickness or death, and that can put a real damper on your enjoyment of your life.

But why am I closing the door? Am I trying to keep the heat in or am I trying to keep the cool out? On one hand, the heat costs money and it’s wasteful to just let it escape. On the other hand, the cold is very powerful and can banish the heat from the home. So which is more of an issue?

By following the analogy further, we take cues that we are supposed to use different tools to manage our temperatures. When it’s getting chilly inside, we raise the thermostat. In a spiritual sense, that would mean noting when we’re getting too cold for comfort, and finding ways to ignite the pilot light in our souls. It might be going to learn Torah, taking a walk in Nature (well bundled-up, of course!), or opening up a Tehillim and speaking to G-d, but whatever we choose, we are seeking to fan the flames of our Jewishness and weld the connection to our Creator.

It really doesn’t matter. I’m trying to do both at the same time because they both have the effect of putting a chill into my home. Whether it’s retaining the heat or blocking the cold from entering, the level of warmth in my home will remain more constant when I employ measures to prevent the unwanted temperature drop. As I thought about this, I realized that the same is true for spirituality. Since passion is connected to heat, let’s view closeness to HaShem and a keen awareness of holiness and sanctity as heat. We also take note of drafts, things that come in surreptitiously and drain the heat from us. It could be cynical people who scoff at those who hold tightly to their faith or people who gossip and speak ill of others. It might even be the ones who ask, “Do you think G-d really cares if…?” All those hold the danger of cooling off our love of HaShem and we must be vigilant against it.

The important first step to staying safe is recognizing that we are the ones who control the door, and we can shut it as needed, because it really is cold outside.
