fter two hundred and ten years of bondage, HASHEM led the Jews out of Mitzrayim. By all rights, the first stop should have been Har Sinai where they would receive the Torah and then straight to the land of Israel. Yet that wasn’t what happened. The Da’as Zekeinim explains that HASHEM said, “If I take them directly into the land, each man will be busy — this one with his vineyard, this one with his field… They won’t have time to study the Torah. Better, I should lead them into the desert. They will spend forty years eating mon and drinking water from the rock. That way, the Torah will have a chance to settle within them.” ³ THE PROBLEM – IT ISN’T CORRECT

This is difficult to understand. We know that the Jewish people spent forty years in the desert as a punishment for the sin of the spies. The Torah says, “A day for a year, a day for a year” (Bemidbar 14:34). How can the Da’as Zekeinim say that this was HASHEM’s plan to allow them to become the Torah Nation? We know that it was actually a punishment. The answer to this can best be understood with an example. ³ LOOKING FOR A SCAPEGOAT

Niron, the general, was sent by Rome to destroy the Temple. He knew that HASHEM protects His people, and he was afraid to attack. To determine whether he would be victorious, he used divination. First he shot an arrow toward Jerusalem, and it flew straight. Then he shot arrows in every other direction, and in mid-flight all the arrows turned toward Jerusalem. Next, he stopped a young child and asked, “What did you learn in school today?” The boy quoted the verse, “And I will give the revenge against Edom into the hands of my people.” Niron said to himself, “HASHEM wishes to de-

stroy His Temple, and He wants to wipe His hands on me.” Instead of attacking, he ran away and converted. From his lineage came Rebbe Meir (Gittin 56a). What happened here was that Niron saw the truth. He understood that HASHEM wanted the Bais HaMikdash to be destroyed, and He was looking for someone to be the fall guy. That person would be allowed to burn the Temple, which would accomplish G-d’s will, but then he would be punished for the act because he chose to do it. ³ THE REASON AND THE CAUSE

This seems to be the answer to the Da’as Zekeinim. HASHEM wanted the Jews to learn Torah without distraction. For that to occur, they had to live separate and alone — in the desert. And that was a problem. “How can I take my people out of bondage and then leave them to wander in the desert without a home? I promised Avraham that I would take them to a bountiful land.” And so, if it could be, HASHEM was look-

ing for an excuse. Once the spies brought their false report and the people accepted it, HASHEM had something to justify their not being taken straight to Israel. In reality, there were two layers to the decree — the reason and the cause. The reason HASHEM wanted them to spend forty years in the desert was that it was good for them. The cause that made it come about was a punishment for the sin of the spies. ³ PART OF THE PLAN – YET YOU ARE ACCOUNTABLE

This concept is critical to understanding many life situations. For instance, imagine a divorced man who remarries and begins a new life. Now with greater maturity, he looks back and recognizes that his first marriage fell apart because of his temper. Yet he also sees Divine intervention orchestrating the events that led to the breakup. Things happened in such a coordinated manner — HASHEM was right there, controlling it all. So is he responsible for the divorce or was it the will of HASHEM? Is he accountable for his children being brought up in a broken home or was that part of HASHEM’s plan? The answer is both. One is the reason; the other is the cause. It was his lack of selfcontrol that caused his marriage to fail, and as such, he is responsible for the results. And at the same time, it was the will of HASHEM that it should happen. This is what HASHEM felt was best for him and for everyone else involved. HILCHOS SHABBOS

The Midrash Tanchuma tells us, that when Avrohom Avinu, in Parshas Vayera, ran to the three guests to invite them to his house, the blood from his recent Bris Milah started dripping. Hashem told him then that in the merit of his mesiras nefesh of doing a mitzvah in such difficult circumstances, with his blood dripping, Hashem will redeem his descendants with the two bloods of milah and Pesach.

When we say during the hagodo on the night of Pesach ‫ואמר לך בדמיך חיי ואמר לך בדמיך חיי‬, we are referring to the two types of blood; the blood of milah and the blood‫ ‏‬of Pesach, the two mitzvos that our ancestors ‫סורפ אלה דווקייל לישבת‬ ‫בערל‏‬ ‫ךמחל‏‬ fulfilled in Mitzrayim in preparation for their ultimate redemption. Chazal explain the Pesukim in Yechezkel as saying that the promised time to redeem Klal Yisroel from Mitzrayim had arrived, and they had no zechusim to effect a geula, they were naked and bereft of anything with which to merit leaving Mitzrayim and a fulfillment of the Divine promise to our forefathers. Although the geula was promised to them, they could not receive it without any zechusim. The long golus in Mitzrayim had continues on other side

It is therefore not permissible to remove ice unless something is placed in the ice maker to take the place of the removed ice, thereby preventing the machine from turning on. Alternatively, the ice machine should be turned to the “Off” position prior to Shabbos and ice may then be freely removed on Shabbos.

STORY In the town of Harshislov, existed a union of beggars. They would take care of themselves and organize their fundraising, dividing their income equally. Each day, they would divide up the streets of the town, designating a couple of streets for each beggar. Sometimes they were lucky and the housewife would invite them in for a piece of bread, or perhaps a bowl of hot soup that she was cooking. They would return at the end of the day with their earnings and place everything in a communal bowl. They would then take maaser, onetenth of the proceeds for those beggars who were physically handicapped or weakened and could not go from house to house themselves. Then they would divide the earnings equally amongst themselves.

When a guest beggar would arrive in Harshislov, they would allow him to join them, giving him a few streets with another beggar and divvying up the proceeds with him too. They would teach him the ropes, telling him what he could hope for and what to say at each house. One Thursday morning, a beggar arrived in town. This beggar seemed to look different from the outset. His calm placid features belied his deep intelligence and his sensitive soul. He was immediately invited to join the beggars’ union and he was given a partner and a street on which to collect. As he trudged from house to house, he noticed a wealthy looking mansion, with a carefully tended garden surrounding its magnificent facade. He mentioned to his partner that they could expect more from that household, and perhaps something warm and nourishing to eat. His partner quickly disallayed any such illusions, telling him that the person who lived in that house was the town's miser. He was never known to give any tzedaka or to invite anyone to his house. Woe to the beggar who tried to bypass his housekeeper and ask him for a donation. He would receive treatment that he did not forget in a hurry. He would hear a denunciation of himself, his ancestry and his general existence. The beggar was made to blame for every one of society's ills and he was told that the biggest mitzva the miser could do

It was one of those mitzvos that were designed to increase peace between the Yetzer Tov and yetzer hora. Unfortunately, most of us don't come across such mitzvos too often, and we need to fight our yetzer hora to do mitzvos) This new beggar, whose name was Nochum Ber, told his friends that he had a plan. He knew how to get a donation out of the town’s miser. The group of beggars found this incredulous, telling him that he could sooner squeeze a drink of cognac from a stone than get a donation from the famed Harshislover miser. When they saw that he was serious, they made a bet with him. They told him they would give him half of the next week’s proceedings if he managed to finagle an invitation for Shabbos from the miser of Harshislov. He agreed to their stipulations, but he told them that he would need their assistance. He told the group of beggars that they had to spread a rumor in town that a new beggar had arrived, who had found a treasure in the forest behind the town and he carried it around with him. The next day’s begging rounds were spiced with a curious story. Each beggar told the housewives who opened the doors to them, that there was a newly arrived beggar in town, who was no poor man. During his travels, he had seen an old hermit digging a hole and hiding a treasure in the forest. When the old man died, he had taken the hidden treasure buried in the forest. They embellished the story with more details about this fantastic treasure until a diamond the size of an egg had been laid. Of course, they made sure to warn the housewives not to tell anybody about it, so the new beggar would not be subject to nudniks and thieves.

In this week’s sedra, Hashem proceeded to grant them two mitzvos, Bris Milah and Korban Pesach, and when they fulfilled these two mitzvos, they had the currency in their collective wallet to be redeemed by Hashem. Both of these mitzvos are performed with blood, and the Possuk tells us that Hashem promised us that we will live with this blood. The life that we got in the merit of this blood is the life of yetzias Mitzrayim and all of its nascent benefits. The zechus that they had that made Hashem grant them this opportunity to keep these mitzvos was the blood that dripped from Avrohom Avinu when keeping the mitzvah of Hachnosas Orchim. The sublime mitzva of Hachnosas Orchim is always a special zechus. But when it was fulfilled by Avrohom Avinu with the maximum mesiras nefesh, on the third day after his bris milah, and the supreme effort of providing everything with perfection, it has eternal powers. This mitzvah provided us with the catalyst for a full geula from Mitzrayim, and ‫כימי צאתנו ממצרים אראנו נפלאות‬, we can find our own yeshuos through this awesome mitzvah.

The Skolyer Rebbe zy"a used this Medrash to explain why at the beginning of the Pesach Seder we announce ‫כל דכפין ייתי ויכול כל‬ ‫סורפ אלה דווקייל לישבת‬ ‫בערל‏‬ ‫ךמחל‏‬ ‫ייתי‏ויפסח‬ ‫דצריך‬. If the original exodus from Mitzrayim was a product of Avrohom Avinu's mesiras nefesh for the mitzvah of hachnosas orchim, we want to keep this mitzvah too as a preparation for the retelling of the story of the exodus from Mitzrayim. The beginning of the Pesach Seder is an invitation to all and sundry to join us, because we not only remember the geula, we also remember what it was that caused it.

In the backwater town of Harshislov, this was major news. Women left their Shabbos food carelessly on the stove and the dough for their challos over rising on their kitchen tables, as they discussed this new story. Hentche wanted to know if the diamond was the size of a chicken egg or a goose’s egg, while Bailiku, the one with four daughters in ‘the Parsha’, wanted to know if he was single or married. The conversations and speculations lasted until the smell of burnt food wafted out of their homes, causing many shalom bayis problems that night in the town. Shortly before Shabbos, Nochum Ber walked to the home of the town’s miser and boldly knocked on the door. The housekeeper opened up the front door, and seeing the beggar, warned him quickly to disappear if he knew what was good for him. This house was known for its treatment of beggars and not in a positive fashion. Nochum Ber told the housekeeper that he heard that the owner of the mansion had a good heart and he wanted to speak to him. The housekeeper, with a disbelieving expression, told him that he must have misheard and he was not welcome over there. To be continued

Think Twice about Double Parking

know that my readers live in different communities and to them, double-parking will have slightly different meanings. For the point of this exercise it won’t matter because the underlying principles are the same. Let’s start by giving a basic idea for those who may not drive, or don’t experience double-parking in their areas. The basic double-park happens when someone is parked near a curb at the side of the street and someone else parks next to them, further into the street. It is not a real parking spot, but people do it when they need to go inside a store for example, just for a brief time, and there are no other spots available. In areas where they clean the streets on certain days, people will opt for parking on the other side of the street, next to other cars, so they don’t block the street cleaner and get a hefty ticket. What’s wrong with that you ask? Well, for starters, it’s illegal. It takes up space in the road that is meant for traffic to pass by and is simply not permitted. You may still end up getting a parking ticket. Then, you also have to figure that you’re potentially blocking someone in. I had that experience one day when I was trying to leave work in New York City. I saw that a plumbing van had parked directly next to me. With cars parked in front of me and behind me, there was no way to get out! Thankfully he had only just parked and not yet gone into the apartment building where he was going to work and I was able to get him to move to let me out, though he wasn’t cheerful about it. What if he’d already been inside and in the middle of a job? Then I’d have been stuck, frustrated and angry, and miss the appointment I had. I’m sure he didn’t think about that when he pulled up, and that’s my point.

Double-parking, besides for the laws against it, often shows a distinct lack of thought towards others. Has the double-parker thought about how his or her car’s placement will affect the people parked legally? The people trying to traverse the street on which they are stopped? Sure, it’s “just for a minute” but even that minute could be a big deal to others. Another type of double-parking, more prevalent in Monsey where I live, and other suburban areas where there are parking lots, is sitting in the Fire Lane in front of a store rather than pulling into a parking space. Again, it’s a big illegal no-no. More than just inconveniencing people, it could be a safety hazard if fire trucks needed to use those spots. Now, most people who do this will tell you, “But I’m just sitting there. If a fire truck comes, I’ll move!” That may be so, but it won’t work for the people who park in the fire lanes and leave a child or someone else in the passenger seat while the driver goes inside. They’re thinking about the policeman who might come ticket them, but not the fact that their car is a road obstacle. Even if the driver sits in the car, it can cause problems. There’s one shopping plaza I frequent which often has cars double-parked in this way. When a car is trying to back out of a spot, the double-parked car often just sits there, even though it’s harder for the other car to move. In fact, once I was trying to pull out of a spot and instead of moving so I had enough space, the driver had the chutzpah to honk at me so that I shouldn’t hit their car! Believe me, I saw you. I was “blessing” you the entire time I was trying to get out with great difficulty and without an accident. When traffic is trying to pass these doubleparked individuals, it can create a nasty snarl as people are waiting to get into spots, have no place

My daughters’ bus drops off at such a shopping plaza. Instead of pulling into spaces, oblivious parents often double-park in the fire lane, blocking traffic and on several occasions, even making it impossible for the bus to get to its regular stop! What is it about people? Why do they do this?

The only way to do that is to make a conscious effort to set an example of how we want them to behave. We are supposed to put ourselves in other people’s shoes and imagine how they’d feel. So, the next time you’re tempted to double-park, either literally or figuratively, think twice – once about yourself, and once (or twice) about those you will be affecting. If you do that, you will always find yourself in the right spot.

The answer is simple. It’s not natural for people to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. We figure, “I’ll just be a minute,” or “I’m just one car, they can go around.” We aren’t cognizant of how we affect others. A friend told me how he waited outside his son’s Yeshiva for the Handicapped space to open up. When one spot finally did, he saw a woman parked in another spot without any tag. He asked if she had one. “No, but I’m not parked, I’m just waiting here.” What do our children see when they watch us park and act in ways that are selfish and insensitive? True, we may even say, “I shouldn’t do this, but…” but they get the message loud and clear that it’s OK to put ourselves first and others a distant second.
