Goodell's role delays HGH testing UPDATED AUG 15, 2013 3:36 PM ET
The NFL and NFL Players Association are on the verge of HGH testing and have been for a while now, with widespread reports that an agreement on the appeals process is what’s holding up the negotiations. A source further clarified the situation to FOX Sports on Thursday by explaining the league has agreed to the union’s demand for neutral arbitration on appeals of HGH violations in most cases, with a few exceptions. The source said the league wants to maintain commissioner Roger Goodell’s authority to hear appeals on violations that do not include a positive test, such as a performanceenhancing-drug violation of the law or demonstrated use without a positive test. What does that mean? Think A-Rod and Biogenesis. The NFL believes Goodell’s giving up the authority to hear appeals in such cases would be in opposition to the collective bargaining agreement and contrary to a drug policy that's been in place for 25 years. The players, on the other hand, believe Goodell has too much power and are therefore eager to take any of it away wherever they can. A source said all 32 of the player representatives who voted on neutral arbitration agreed a third party should hear appeals in all cases. The source said almost all of those player reps cited Goodell's attempt to levy severe suspensions in the Bountygate situation as their reasoning behind their votes. The league is holding firm on this last issue because of concessions already made to the union, which include a population study to determine the standard for HGH levels in an NFL player's body. The NFLPA has agreed to the protocol for the test and is awaiting Goodell's final approval so that the study can begin. Once that process is underway, both sides will be closer to full-blown testing. The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to a system in which 40 players will be randomly selected each week to be tested for HGH. There will be no testing on game days. First-time violators will face a four-game suspension, with the next violation resulting in an eight-game ban. A third positive test will net a player a one-year suspension. But those guidelines are classified as a tentative agreement until the final issue involving the appeals process is worked out. Once the final issue of Goodell’s authority is resolved, there will likely be a quick move to full-blown HGH testing in the NFL.
UF offers roster spot to one-armed Zach Hodskins Zach Hodskins is a shooting guard for Alpharetta Milton High School in Georgia. What sets Hodskins apart from other talented players from around the country is that he was born with only one hand. His left arm ends just below his elbow. And as first reported by Yahoo's Prep Rally blog, Hodskins, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, has picked up a preferred walk-on offer from the University of Florida. David Boyd, a former coach of Hodskins, said via Twitter that he spoke with Gators assistant Jon Pelphrey and that he confirmed the offer. While a preferred walk-on offer would guarantee Hodskins a spot on the team, it's not a scholarship. According to Prep Rally, Hodskins has been impressing scouts this summer on the AAU circuit, which may have prompted the offer from Florida. But it remains to be seen if he accepts the offer in favor of a scholarship elsewhere. UAB and Birmingham Southern are a couple of schools that have reportedly shown interest.

DOCTOR SAYS BARKEVIOUS MINGO’S INJURY COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL Ray Frager, FOXSports.com
Barkevious Mingo was back at Cleveland Browns practice on Saturday, watching from the sideline. He’s a lucky young man. Yes, the rookie linebacker and first-round draft pick probably will miss : the rest of the preseason with a bruised lung. But consider this: He could have been killed by one more hit in Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions. That’s not hyperbole. That’s a medical opinion. After Mingo had suffered the bruised lung, another shot to his chest could have proved fatal, Dr. Clark Fuller, director of thoracic surgery at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., toldThe Plain Dealer. Fuller didn’t treat Mingo, but he said: “The chest cavity is an area where you could bleed to death and nobody ever sees a drop of blood on the ground.” In actuality, there was blood on the ground. Mingo said he was spitting up blood after coming out of the game. It started after he was in with the kickoff coverage team and continued for four to five more special teams plays in the first half. “I ran down after the *opening kickoff+, and I didn’t feel right,” he said. “I kept going back out, and it was harder and harder to catch my breath. I went to my coach and he thought it’d be a good idea to go to the trainer with it. They did a great job pulling me out, and recognizing the symptoms and treating me.” Mingo spent two nights in a hospital but is expected to be fine with rest and time to heal. For Pee Wee Football I think the risk is higher due to the fact that they are young. The one thing I can say by watching these future NFL players is that they learn more then football. They take with them respect, honor and sportsmanship. One thing that I notice that the risk of injury is more high if you have staff that are more about winning then teaching.
As parents you must go to some of their Practice as well as their games to make sure that your child is getting the best of what they need. Lets get real not all of our kids will become NFL Players so with that said we must protect their future.
Juve fans stabbed before Supercoppa Italian news agency ANSA says two Juventus fans are in hospital after being stabbed in the buildup to their team's Italian Supercup victory over Lazio in Rome. ANSA says the incident happened in the afternoon, near the Stadio Olimpico, before the start of the match and that both men were from Rome. The two fans, aged 27 and 28, were taken to Rome's Policlinico Gemelli, with stab wounds to their backside. They will reportedly need about a month to recover.
Jerry Remy's son faces murder charge

The son of longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy pleaded not guilty Friday to fatally stabbing his girlfriend a day after he was released from custody for allegedly assaulting her. Jared Remy, 34, was arraigned in Waltham District Court on charges of murder and domestic assault and battery in the Thursday night killing of Jennifer Martel, 27.
Police officers responding to several 911 calls went to a Waltham apartment complex at about 10 p.m. Thursday and found Martel on an outside patio with multiple stab wounds, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said. In court, prosecutors described a brutal and determined attack, saying Remy assaulted Martel in the kitchen, living room, on a stairway and then pinned her to the ground in the patio where he stabbed her several times. Neighbors who tried to help Martel were driven back when Remy slashed at them, Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Lisa McGovern told a judge. Remy was arrested at the scene, his clothes soaked in the victim's blood. On Wednesday, Remy had been released on personal recognizance in an open assault and battery case in which Martel was the alleged victim, Ryan said. The there was no active restraining order against him, she said. Remy has a violent criminal history, including a total of 15 criminal charges since 1998, according to Waltham court records. He has been accused of assaulting five people — including four women — and was involved in at least three restraining orders, including one in which he was the plaintiff. Remy was ordered held without bail. His attorney, Peter Bella, said he was trying to figure out what happened leading up to Martel's stabbing, pointing out that his client had what could be described as defensive wounds. He called her death a tragedy.
Royals' Tejada suspended 105 games
This one isn’t related to Biogenesis, but Major League Baseball announced the suspension Saturday of a former MVP — and a player who has been linked to performanceenhancing drugs numerous times in the past. Baseball issued a 105-game suspension to Kansas City Royals infielder Miguel Tejada for using amphetamines. Tejada’s season already was over — the Royals moved him to the 60-day disabled list on Wednesday because of his strained left calf. Now, his career might be over, too. A source confirms that Tejada had three positive tests, two recently, as reported by Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. There is no penalty for the first positive test. The suspension encompasses 25 games for the second and 80 for the third. Tejada is not appealing and will begin serving the ban immediately. “I apologize to my teammates, the Royals organization and to the Kansas City fans," Tejada said in a statement released Saturday on his behalf by the Major League Baseball Players Association. "I have a medical condition that requires medication to treat. I took that medication while re-applying for a Therapeutic Use Exemption. Under the requirements of the Joint Drug Program, I made a mistake in doing so.” MLB's medical staff occasionally grants therapeutic-use exemptions that allow players to use drugs such as Adderall to treat ADD and other disorders. However, Tejada no longer had the proper authorization to use the drug and the positive tests warranted a suspension. It's the third-longest non-lifetime ban handed down by MLB behind Alex Rodriguez's 211game suspension, which is currently under appeal, and reliever Steve Howe's 119-day penalty in 1992. Tejada, 39, won the 2002 American League Most Valuable Player Award with the Oakland Athletics. While this is his first violation of baseball’s Joint Drug Agreement, his name repeatedly has surfaced in connection with PEDs. Rafael Palmeiro, Tejada’s former teammate with theBaltimore Orioles, said he believed that he tested positive because of a vial of B-12 that Tejada had given him. Tejada also was named in baseball’s Mitchell Report in 2007 and pleaded guilty to charges that he lied to Congress about his knowledge of PED use in baseball in 2009. Tejada, a six-time All-Star, batted .288 with a .695 OPS for the Royals this season, with three home runs in 156 at-bats. He is a career .285 hitter with 307 home runs and .791 OPS.

DARREN YOUNG COMES OUT Everyone knows that professional wrestling is scripted, but there didn’t appear to be anything bogus about one WWE star’s acknowledgement that he is gay. Darren Young — real name: Fred Rosser — became the first active professional wrestler to come out, stunning a TMZ cameraman at the Los Angeles airport with the news after the paparazzo asked him if a gay athlete could make it in the WWE or MMA. "Absolutely, look at me," Young said. "I'm a WWE Superstar and to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay. And I'm happy. I'm very happy.“ "To be honest, I don't think [my sexuality] matters," Young added. "Does it matter? Does it matter to you? Does it change what you think about me?” When the cameraman — who said he was “flabbergasted” at the news — described the proclamation as Young’s “coming out,” Young seemed to downplay the significance of the news.
“I guess if you want to call it coming out — I really don’t know what to say it is but I’m just letting you know,” he said. “I’m happy with who I am, I’m comfortable with myself, and I’m happy to be living the dream. I’m in L.A. for SummerSlam with WWE. "You know, to be honest with you, I’m happy with myself. Some people might not like it, some people will like it, but I’m here to please myself. I’m here to be happy. It’s very important I’m happy with myself.”
WWE When asked about setting an example, Young said he’s “hoping to be able to make a difference,” but noted that “someone’s sexual preference shouldn’t really matter.” He also said he’s not concerned about it being an issue among his peers in the WWE. "We’re all adults, and to be honest with you, when I come to work, I come to work,” Young said. “Business is business. I’m a WWE superstar and I’m there to entertain the WWE universe, and that’s what my job is to do, and I do it well." That sentiment seemed to be echoed by WWE star John Cena when TMZ tracked him down to ask him about Young’s announcement: “Darren Young is an openly gay WWE superstar, and there's nothing wrong with that,” Cena said. “If he tries to cause trouble in the locker room, that's when it becomes an issue. It's all about being professional. Darren Young is a consummate professional, and I'm actually proud of him for doing that.”

COWBOYS TURN IT OVER FIVE TIMES IN FIRST HALF AGAINST CARDINALS By Sid Saraf, FOXSports.com God, we love the Cowboys. Sure, they haven’t made the playoffs in a few years, but they’re always entertaining. Take Saturday, for instance.
The Cowboys managed to be in midseason form by turning a preseason game against Arizona into a comedy of errors. By the time both teams went into the locker room at halftime, Dallas managed to accumulate five turnovers. That’s right, FIVE. Let’s recap all of them: 1. Dwayne Harris started by fumbling a punt. Stepfan Taylor recovered to give the Cardinals a first down at the Dallas 22-yard line. Five plays later, Jay Feeley kicked a field goal. 2. Tony Romo threw a nice pass to Lance Dunbar for a 43-yard gain, but Dunbar coughed it up and Jasper Brinkley fell on it. First down, Arizona! Feeley would eventually add another field goal. 3. On the next Cowboys’ possession, Romo connected with Dez Bryant on what should have been a nice gain into Cardinals territory, but Bryant had the ball stripped. Once again, Brinkley recovered. 4. Kyle Orton replaced Tony Romo on the the next drive. Guess what happened? Orton’s second pass was picked off by Jerraud Powers, giving the Cardinals the ball at Dallas’ 30-yard line. The Cowboys got bailed out when Feeley pushed a field goal attempt wide right. 5. Orton struck again two possessions later when he was picked off by Tony Jefferson with less than a minute left in the second quarter. If you’re counting at home, that’s four turnovers in five possessions and five overall. Amazingly, none were Tony Romo’s fault.
Will Mayweather fight Pacquiao? "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather has found a way to make it to 44 wins (26 of those being KOs) with a zero in his loss column. No other boxer can brag about about career numbers like his, which is fine with Mayweather. One thing Floyd is good at is hyping himself. As the 36-year-old "Money Team" leader counts down the final fights of his storied career, he's making sure to cross out all possibility of the bout every fight fan would love to see: Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. Pretty Boy Floyd said that once upon a time, Pacquiao had a chance to make the fight . . . and didn't. "Basically,'' Mayweather said, "that's the best place I'd like to leave it." Is Mayweather just too damn cocky to give Pacquiao a shot? It's no secret Mayweather wants nothing to do with Bob Arum, his former promoter who now handles Pacquiao. Mayweather told Yahoo! Sports that he would only consider fighting Pacquiao if Manny joined Mayweather Promotions. Essentially, Mayweather is trying to do the Jay-Z thing and own the competition. Savvy business? Yeah, but it's not likely Pacquiao will travel down that road. Well, according to what Mayweather told MLive.com, any offer to Manny seems to be off the table. "That's probably how I was feeling at that particular time," Mayweather said. "I'm only human. Floyd Mayweather does contradict himself. I'm only human. I'm not perfect. I mean, I think we all do. "How are things today? He's not going to get a chance to fight me. I was feeling that way weeks ago. Now, I'm feeling like I wouldn't even give him a chance. He had a chance, he blew it, so that's what it is." So that's that, huh? From all the back-and-forth talk from each side and high hopes of boxing fans worldwide, Mayweather-Pac Man fight was all bluster from the start. It was never gonna happen. The only thing that did happen from those talks was a defamation suit, which Pacquiao filed against the Mayweather camp for accusing him of steroid use. The way I see it, Pretty Boy Floyd was scared to lose then; he's scared to lose now.

MARQUEZ ROCKS TO MOTOGP POLE AT INDY Rookie MotoGP hero Marc Marquez underlined his absolute domination of the developing Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend on Saturday with a crushing performance to secure the pole for Sunday’s 27-lap Grand Prix. Entering qualifying, the 20year-old world championship leader had topped every single premier-class session of the weekend. And rather than allow any of his opponents a chance to strike back, QP only saw Marquez further his advantage with a stunning 1:37.958 lap. That time eclipsed the old lap record (1:38.813) of his Repsol Honda teammate, Dani Pedrosa, by nearly a full second. It was also more than a half-second stronger than any of his rivals managed in the session, making him a solid favorite to claim his third consecutive MotoGP win tomorrow at the Brickyard. Should Marquez win, he’d have stormed to victory in all three of the nation’s Grands Prix this season and become only the third rider in history to have won three races in one nation in a single season. Marquez will be joined on the front row by his chief title rivals, defending champion Jorge Lorenzo (1:38.471) and Pedrosa (1:38.486), who are desperate to slow the rookie’s building momentum. The second row will feature the on-form Cal Crutchlow (who ran second quick to Marquez in the pre-QP FP4 session), GO&FUN Gresini Honda’s Alvaro Bautista, and American Nicky Hayden. Hayden has a history of stepping up in front of the home crowd and today was no exception. Veteran driver dies after track crash ABBOTTSTOWN, PA. (AP) Veteran Sprint Car driver Kramer Williamson died from injuries suffered during a qualifying race at Lincoln Speedway in central Pennsylvania, according to race organizers and the coroner's office.
Williamson, 63, of Palmyra, was pronounced dead at York Hospital at about 1:15 p.m. Sunday, the York County coroner's office said. He had suffered serious injuries in a crash that occurred Saturday night during the United Racing Company 358/360 Sprint Car Challenge. Investigators said Williamson's pink No. 73 car was on the fourth lap of a 10-lap qualifying round when it climbed onto another car and crashed into a retaining wall on the second turn, climbing the fence before returning to the track and flipping over several times. He was extricated from the car and flown to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. United Racing Company co-owner John Zimmerman said the team is mourning the loss of a popular and accomplished driver. ''URC lost the most popular driver and accomplished driver in our storied history,'' Zimmerman said in a statement. ''We are so saddened by the loss of an unforgettable member of our URC Family.'‘ Williamson was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2008 and had been racing for more than 40 years. He shared the 1971 rookie of the year title at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg. The last driver fatality at Lincoln was in 1975. In June, NASCAR driver Jason Leffler died from injuries suffered in a Sprint Car crash at Bridgeport Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J. About two weeks before Leffler's death, Josh Burton died of injuries sustained in a crash at Bloomington Speedway in Indiana. In late May, at a dirt track in Nevada, two drivers were killed in a race. And in March in California, two people were killed when a car careened off a dirt track and crashed on pit road.
Gibson has strong words for Brau Kirk Gibson would like to have a private conversation with disgraced slugger Ryan Braun. The Arizona Diamondbacks manager said Sunday that "cheaters" like Braun rob other players of opportunities for moments such as his pinch-hit home run during the ninth inning of Game 1 of the 1988 World Series for the Dodgers. Braun accepted a 65-game suspension last month. TheMilwaukee Brewers star apologized for "mistakes" but has yet to publicly admit to using performance-enhancing drugs. "If I get a chance to see Braun, I've got a question for him right to his face, you know?" Gibson said Sunday before a game against thePittsburgh Pirates. "Is he about rehearsed (enough) by now, you think? About ready to come out? He's probably practicing at the theater school somewhere. Just you look at how things like that can influence people's opportunities and an opportunity to do something like that." Gibson had been asked about his famous homer off the Oakland Athletics' Dennis Eckersley 25 years ago when, unprompted, he referenced Braun. Gibson wouldn't reveal his exact questions for Braun, but he implied it would concern the 2011 NL division series. Braun hit .500 during a five-game victory by the Brewers over Gibson's Diamondbacks. He went 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored during a 3-2, 10-inning Milwaukee victory in the deciding Game 5. That month, Braun would test positive under Major League Baseball's drug program. "I mean, all things considered, we should have won a game," Gibson said of Game 5 in 2011. "All things considered, the last game, we tied them up and had a chance to win it. But there were other times in my career where I did overcome cheaters with my teammates. We had our chance." Braun successfully appealed the suspension he was given for the 2011 positive test. He was suspended last month in connection with the Biogenesis clinic, an investigation that has also ensnared New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and 12 other players. Braun strongly denied any wrongdoing after his first positive test. "It will be interesting to see what he has to say," Gibson said of Braun publicly addressing his transgressions. "I said this a long time ago, but I think that people should have an opportunity to ask him some questions and have him answer them unrehearsed. But something tells me he's getting really prepared for just about anything they can throw at him." Gibson said his wife is upset about Braun possibly costing Arizona a chance at a World Series in 2011. Gibson initially defended Braun after his first positive test, implying he should have been given the benefit of the doubt.
Former Marine appealing NCAA rule A Middle Tennessee freshman who finished five years of active service in the Marines this summer is appealing an NCAA rule preventing him from playing this season because he played in a recreational league in the military. According to The Daily News Journal, the rule essentially says student-athletes who do not enroll in college within a year of graduating high school will be charged one year of collegiate eligibility for every academic year they participate in organized competition. By NCAA standards, Steven Rhodes' play at the Marine base counted as ''organized competition'' because there were game officials, team uniforms and the score was kept. But the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Marine sergeant said the recreational league was nothing close to organized. ''Man, it was like intramurals for us,'' said the 24-year-old. ''There were guys out there anywhere from 18 to 40-something years old. The games were spread out. We once went six weeks between games.'' The rule first took shape in 1980, when ''participation in organized competition during times spent in the armed services, on official church missions or with recognized foreign aid services of the U.S. government'' were exempt from limiting eligibility. But through several revisions and branches of the rule, the clause allowing competition during military service was lost and not carried over into the current bylaws. Daryl Simpson, MTSU's assistant athletic director/compliance, said he doesn't believe the NCAA ever intended to penalize military service members. ''All this is strictly because of how the bylaw is worded,'' he said. ''In my opinion, there is no intent of anyone to not allow protection to our U.S. service members.'' Middle Tennessee won a partial appeal to the NCAA last week recouping two years of eligibility for Rhodes with his recreational league spanning two academic years. But Rhodes still is appealing to play this season practicing both at tight end and defensive end. MTSU spokesman Mark Owens told The Associated Press on Sunday that the school hopes to hear from the NCAA within the next month. The Blue Raiders open the season Aug. 29 hosting Western Carolina.
Celebratory kiss or a statement?
Kseniya Ryzhova and Tatyana Firova were part of a Russian 4x400 meter relay team that won the gold medal at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, and after the race Saturday, the two shared a kiss on the medal podium. The kiss is being viewed as the latest symbol of protest against Russia’s recently enacted anti-gay laws that have some calling for a boycott of next year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi. American runner Nick Symmonds dedicated his silver medal in the 800 meters to his gay and lesbian friends back home, and Swedish high jumper Emma Green-Tregaro reportedly had to repaint her nails after painting them in multiple colors as a sign of support for gay rights. However, with respect to this latest apparent act of defiance, a Sky News report states that "sources in the Russian camp claimed Kseniya Ryzhova and Tatyana Firova ... were just exchanging a congratulatory kiss and there was no political message involved." It’s not for us to definitively say what message Firova, 31, and Ryzhova, 26, did or didn’t intend to convey when they puckered up on the podium. But given the current climate in their native country, it sure seems like an interesting time for a celebratory smooch.

Bolt takes third gold at worlds Usain Bolt stumbled on the track, even almost fell down. Don't worry, everybody, it wasn't in the race. No, this near-tumble happened in the middle of his celebratory dance, when a barefooted Bolt hammed it up after winning a third gold medal on the last day of the world championships. He even tossed his spikes into the c rowd. And why not? He certainly didn't need them anymore. His work was finished. In the very last race of the championships Sunday, Bolt grabbed the gold-colored baton for his anchor leg of the 4x100-meter relay and churned toward the finish line, huffing and puffing to generate more speed. Not that he needed it. Justin Gatlin couldn't catch him. The rest of the field couldn't catch him, either. Very few can catch him -- he's simply in a class by himself. "For me, my aim is to continue hard (toward) the greatness thing," said Bolt, whose team finished in a world-leading time of 37.36 seconds. "Continue dominating." Oh, he did that all right, winning gold in the 100, gold in the 200 and even more gold in the relay. With that, Bolt became the most decorated athlete in world championship history with eight golds and two silvers, moving past Carl Lewis (8 golds, 1 silver, 1 bronze) and Michael Johnson (8 golds). "It's not just about the talent, it's about rising to the occasion. He understands what that means," said Gatlin, who anchored the U.S. to a silver medal despite momentarily stepping outside his lane. "That takes you up another level. To be able to rise to the occasion when an entire stadium full of people are either rooting for you or want to see you fail and you're able to hold it together, that takes talent." Overshadowed by Bolt mania was the performance of teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who also won three sprinting events. She finished it off by breaking away from the field in the 4x100, easily beating an American squad that struggled to get the baton around -- again. Originally finishing third after a bad exchange, the Americans were later bumped up to second after France was disqualified. Still, the Jamaicans went 6-0 in the sprints against the U.S. in Moscow. These days, the proud sprinting nation owns this rivalry.
