16, tragically dies on the field after breaking neck while making a routine A Georgia high school football player died during a pre-season game Friday night. DeAntre Turman, 16, and only a junior at Creekside High School, died of a broken neck after making a routine tackle. He had considerable interest from major college football programs and was considered one of the state’s top recruits for next year’s graduating class. Turman had already been offered a full scholarship to play football for the University of Kentucky, according to ESPN. Called ‘Tre Tre’ by friends, Turman was one of only a couple dozen juniors with Division-1 scholarships. A young life with seemingly limitless potential was cut short by what the medical examiner called ‘blunt force trauma,’ according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A cornerback, Turman was an aggressive defender making a clean, solid tackle on a wide receiver in the open field, according to witnesses who spoke to local media. Nothing about the play seemed out of the ordinary until he didn’t get up after the tackle. Tre broke on it, dislodged the ball and his body just went limp. (He) immediately just went limp and he was on the ground,’ coach Glenn Ford told WSB. ‘*Everyone was+ calling out his name, just trying to get him to come back to open his eyes up to move until the ambulance got there,’ Ford added. The ambulance arrived 15 minutes later, Turman was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Turman fractured the third vertebrae in his neck, according to the medical examiner. The young star attended a football camp during the summer and was slated to play in a December all-star game. As a tribute his number two jersey will not be worn by anyone on the field, according to the Journal-Constitution.
DENNIS RODMAN SAYS NORTH KOREA'S LEADER HAS BABY DAUGHTER By David Chance, Reuters
SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has a baby daughter, seemingly guaranteeing the future of a dynasty that has ruled the isolated and impoverished state for three generations, according to U.S. basketball star Dennis Rodman, who met Kim last week. Kim's wife, Ri Sol, had appeared to be pregnant in pictures issued last year by North Korea's state news agency, although no confirmation was available. She then disappeared from public view, returning in October. Rodman, who has visited North Korea twice this year and describes Kim as his "friend," told Britain's Guardian newspaper that he had held the baby. "I held their baby Ju-ae and spoke with Ms. Ri as well. He's a good dad and has a beautiful family," Rodman was quoted as saying by the newspaper. Kim Jong-un, the third member of his family to rule North Korea, is believed to be 30 years old. He was effectively anointed as his father's successor in 2010, despite the fact he is the third son. Given the traditional nature of North Korean society, it is unlikely that Ju-ae would succeed her father, although female relatives of Kim, such as his aunt, occupy key positions in government.
TOKYO WILL HOST 2020 OLYMPICS The International Olympic Committee went for a familiar, trusted host, selecting Tokyo for the 2020 Games and signaling that playing it safe was preferable to more risky picks like Sochi and Rio. With Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reassuring IOC members on the Fukushima nuclear crisis, Tokyo defeated Istanbul 60-36 Saturday in the final round of secret voting. Madrid was eliminated earlier after an initial tie with Istanbul. Tokyo, which hosted the 1964 Olympics, billed itself as the ''safe pair of hands'' at a time of global political and economic turmoil — a message that clearly resonated with the IOC. With Madrid's bid dogged by questions over Spain's economic crisis and Istanbul handicapped by political unrest and the civil war in neighboring Syria, Tokyo offered the fewest risks. ''The certainty was a crucial factor — the certainty that they could deliver,'' IOC vice president Craig Reedie of Britain said. The choice of Tokyo bucked the IOC's recent trend of taking chances on host cities: Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Winter Games, Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics and Pyeongchang, South Korea, for the 2018 Winter Games. Preparations for Sochi have been overshadowed by cost overruns, a record $51 billion budget, security worries and an international outcry over Russia's anti-gay legislation. There are mounting concerns among the IOC over construction delays in Rio. ''For better or worse, we picked Sochi followed by Rio followed by Pyeongchang,'' Canadian member Dick Pound said. ''Maybe we need to say, `All right, whether it's the most exciting city in the world or not, they will deliver.''' Tokyo had been on the defensive in the final days of the campaign because of mounting concerns over the leak of radioactive water from the tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. In the final presentation, Abe gave the IOC assurances that the Fukushima leak was not a threat to Tokyo and took personal responsibility for keeping the games safe. ''Let me assure you the situation is under control,'' Abe said. ''It has never done and will never do any damage to Tokyo.''
BRUNO MARS CONFIRMS SUPER BOWL HALFTIME GIG Bruno Mars will perform in the Super Bowl halftime show, the singer confirmed via his Twitter account on Sunday.
The Associated Press reported Saturday that Mars would be performing, citing sources familiar with the league’s plans. The internet was abuzz over speculative reports earlier this week. The "When I Was Your Man" singer was expected to be made official Sunday at an NFL kickoff event in Times Square. This season’s Super Bowl is set for Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The 27-year-old Mars -- a male pop vocal Grammy winner in 2011 for "Just the Way You Are" -- follows Beyonce, the star of this year’s Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans. Madonna took the world’s most-watched music stage in 2012; 2011 featured The Black Eyed Peas with Usher and Slash in 2011; and The Who performed in 2010.
FAN FALLS, DIES AT CANDLESTICK PARK SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A football fan fell to his death from an elevated pedestrian walkway Sunday at Candlestick Park during the 49ers' final season opener at the San Francisco stadium, police said. The death came just after kickoff at about 1:30 p.m. in the 49ers' 34-28 win over Green Bay, police said, and multiple witnesses reported the man appeared to be intoxicated before he fell to a sidewalk. The death also happened the same day a railing collapsed at the Colts' game against the Raiders in Indianapolis injuring two fans who were leaning against the barrier above the tunnel leading to Oakland's locker room. It appeared both fans in Indiana escaped serious injury, stadium officials said. In San Francisco, police spokesman Gordon Shyy said off-duty medics and police officers gave the man first aid until an ambulance arrived, but he was declared dead from his injuries. Authorities said he appeared to be in his 30s, and his name has not been released. In a statement, 49ers spokesman Bob Lange confirmed the team had learned of the accident outside the stadium. "We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time," he said in an email. It was not clear how far the man fell from the Jamestown walkway, which goes around the outside of Candlestick. The historic sports complex closes after this season and will be replaced by a shopping center. Next year, the 49ers will move into a $1.2 billion stadium at the team's Silicon Valley headquarters in Santa Clara. Since 2003, there have been more than two dozen cases of fans falling at stadiums across the United States, according to the Institute for the Study of Sports Incidents. Most recently in Atlanta, baseball fan Ronald Lee Homer Jr. died last month after falling 85 feet following a tumble over Turner Field's fourth-level railing. Homer's death was the third at an Atlanta stadium in the past year. Also last month in Denver, Broncos fan Noel Robinson was injured when he fell about 10 feet from an escalator at a preseason game.

UCLA FRESHMAN WR HIT BY CAR, KILLED UCLA receiver Nick Pasquale was hit by a car and killed while walking in San Clemente early Sunday morning. He was 20. The Orange County Sheriff's Department said Pasquale was struck about 1:30 a.m. It wasn't immediately clear whether Pasquale was trying to cross the busy multi-lane street in a residential neighborhood. Sheriff's Lt. Gary Strachan said the car's driver stopped, called authorities and stayed with Pasquale until they arrived. The accident is under investigation. Strachan said no one was arrested. Pasquale, a redshirt freshman, walked on at UCLA last fall after playing at San Clemente High School, where he was a three-year starter. The 5-foot-7 receiver earned the nickname ''Pacman'' from his teammates while participating on the scout team in practices last season and again this summer, preparing his more heralded teammates for games. ''This is a tragic loss,'' UCLA coach Jim Mora said. ''Nick was an outstanding young man who had a positive impact on everyone who knew him. He was a great teammate who was loved and respected by his entire team. Our thoughts are with the Pasquale family.'' UCLA said Pasquale played in the final offensive series in its season-opening victory over Nevada on Aug. 31, although his name and No. 36 jersey didn't appear on the participation report. The 16th-ranked Bruins were off this weekend, and many players went home to see their families. Mora joined hundreds of Pasquale's friends, family members and fellow football players in Tritons jerseys at San Clemente High School's football field Sunday night for a sunset vigil to honor Pasquale, whose father wore UCLA gear. ''I love all of you guys for coming out here and supporting Nick and my wife and my family,'' Mel Pasquale told the gathering. UCLA plays at Nebraska on Saturday. Mora has closed the upcoming week's practices to the media, but Pasquale's teammates reacted on Twitter as the news of his death came out Sunday morning.

SEPT. 9, 1991 Ric Flair makes his official debut on WWE programming, introduced by Bobby Heenan on Prime Time Wrestling. WHO IS PLANNING A COME BACK ( RUMOR HAS IT) John Morrison: "My impression is that the door is open," Morrison said. "I originally got into wrestling because it was my first love, since I was a little kid it was what I wanted to do. And I still haven't found anything quite as cool as wrestling… It's something I'm going to get back to. The other question was is a return immanent, and I don't know. "I'm shuffling through a bunch of things and I have a bunch of things that I want to accomplish in the movie biz before I go back to wrestling full time. Once you're on that full-time schedule, you don't really have control of your own time. But I am definitely coming back at some point.“
WWE In a recent interview conducted by WQAM radio (via WrestlingInc.), Goldberg admitted he was open to return to the ring after a near 10-year absence. Goldberg turns 47 this year, but he stated he is still in great shape. Interestingly enough, despite the feverish intensity he had as a babyface—with the crowd reaction adding more fuel to the tank—he said he would prefer returning as a heel. He also had some choice words to say about Ryback, saying his character is merely a Goldberg rip-off. However, Goldberg stated he had no ill feelings toward Ryback.
Batista: Batista has said in recent interviews that he is interested in returning to the WWE, and listed part-time workers such as The Rock and Brock Lesnar as potential opponents. With the future of the planned Rock/Lesnar match currently unknown, it is possible WWE would push to bring back Batista to fill the role of Dwayne Johnson, who was injured in his WrestleMania match with John Cena.

SERENA EARNS 17TH GRAND SLAM TITLE Fussing with her skirt and flubbing her shots, Serena Williams was troubled in the US Open final by the swirling breeze and the strong play of Victoria Azarenka. After one early miss, Williams declared, ''I can't play in this wind.'' After blowing a big lead and dropping the second set, Williams chucked her racket toward the sideline, and it bounced back onto the court. In the end, Williams pulled herself together, as she usually does when it matters the most. Facing her only test of the past two weeks, the No. 1-seeded Williams overcame No. 2 Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-1 on Sunday for a fifth championship at Flushing Meadows and second in a row. Williams raised her Grand Slam singles title count to 17, the sixth-most in history and one shy of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. Williams collected a $3.6 million prize, including a $1 million bonus for producing the best results during the North American summer hardcourt circuit leading up to the US Open. ''She's a champion, and she knows how to repeat that. She knows what it takes to get there. I know that feeling, too. And when two people who want that feeling so bad meet, it's like a clash,'' Azarenka said, pounding her fists together. Helped by nine aces, one at 126 mph, Williams improved to 67-4 with a career-high nine titles in 2013. Since a first-round exit at the 2012 French Open, she is 98-5 with 14 titles, winning four of the past six Grand Slam tournaments. ''Vika's such a great opponent, such a great fighter,'' said Williams, who turns 32 on Sept. 26, ''and that's why she's been able to win multiple Grand Slams. That's why it was never over until match point.'' Yes, this one did not come easily, even though it appeared to be nearly over when Williams went ahead by two breaks at 4-1 in the second set. Williams served for the match at 5-4 and 6-5 — only to have the gutsy Azarenka break each time. Still, Williams regrouped and regained control. ''In the third set, Serena really found a way to calm down and restart from zero and quickly erase what happened,'' said Williams' coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

GIANTS CAN'T GET A GRIP, COMMIT SIX TURNOVERS IN 36-31 SEASON-OPENING LOSS TO COWBOYS Eli Manning throws for 450 yards but three interceptions as the Giants turn the ball over six times in a 36-31 season-opening loss to the Cowboys. COWBOYS 36, GIANTS 31 ARLINGTON, Tex. – For four years, The House That Jerry Built was the Giants’ home away from home, a massive and glitzy stadium that Eli Manning once christened with his signature in the road locker room, and where the Cowboys could never topple their rivals....
Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter careers are fading as Yankees make playoff push You think Joe Girardi isn’t one person feeling a sense of urgency about this wild card race the rest of the Yankees’ American League rivals simply won’t let them out of? On the morning of what was looming as one of the worst weekends in the Yankees’ history, Girardi spent almost his entire pregame media-fest discussing … Mariano Rivera receives a hug from Brett Gardner after the Yankees bail Mo out after he blew a save.
Did Kidd make the right move? The headline on the rumors report at Hoopshype.com -- "Kidd Buys Stake" -- could have led us to believe the Brooklyn Nets coach was having problems with the undead. (Speaking of undead, please throw in your joke regarding Jason Kidd's last playoff run right here.) But instead of doing his best to ward off vampires, Kidd did nothing more than buy Jay-Z's interest in the Nets. So, for around $500,000, the new coach will own .067 percent of the team he now directs from the bench. That's about 1/15 of one percent, which -- wait for it -- is pretty close to his shooting percent during his last few games as a New York Knick.
Why one LPGA pro is walking away from the game she loves When Amanda Blumenherst was in the second grade, she dressed up as Nancy Lopez for career day. Years later when Blumenherst entered LPGA Q-School fresh off a degree from Duke, Lopez sent her a good-luck text. “Blu” didn’t need luck. She won Q-School by two shots and took to the tour with her unorthodox swing, big sparkling eyes and Nike contract. The most decorated player in college golf history was set to hit the big-time. Four years later, she’s just about had enough. “I have not lost my love of the game,” Blumenherst said. The newlywed simply wants a “more normal marriage and life.” “She wants to be with her husband, and you can’t blame her for that,” said former Duke teammate Jennie Lee. Blumenherst’s friends on tour threw her a semi-retirement party last Friday at Stanford’s in Portland, Ore. Natalie Gulbis brought a diamond-shaped cake – think baseball, not jewels – and Lee decorated with Duke blue balloons. The gesture brought tears. Blumenherst and Nate Freiman, a 6-foot, 8-inch first baseman for the Oakland A’s, met at Duke and have been together for seven years. They tied the knot last December. “It was just getting harder and harder to leave (Nate),” said Blumenherst, who struggled over the summer with their scattered professional schedules. The couple make their home in Scottsdale, Ariz., but have an apartment in Oakland, Calif., that’s five minutes from the stadium. Blumenherst, 26, likens the apartment to a dorm, with Duke paraphernalia – calendars, mugs, jerseys – strewn everywhere. Golf clubs and baseball equipment double as decor. Globetrotting leaves little time for nesting. This week, Blumenherst can sit with the other wives in the friends and family section in Oakland during the Texas Rangers series. Next week, she’ll be in France for The Evian Championship for what could be her last event of the year. Freiman, meanwhile, has a full week of away games. Blumenherst hopes to play a small LPGA schedule in the coming years (status and sponsorships permitting), sprinkling in a few charity pro-ams and corporate outings. With her theater minor, she’s considering TV for possible employment, but also fancies a stab at creative writing. The Dukie has options.
Is the NBA's interest in Canada a good thing? Now that the NBA is demonstrating interest in Canadian basketball, it's probably time to be worried ‌ if you're Canadian. According to a report, the league is launching a youth basketball campaign in an effort to capitalize on the growing interest of their sport in that country. We're not really sure what "campaign" or "capitalize" refer to, but expect to hear or read about a series of lame skills clinics. Anyway, the report reveals that -- according to the NBA -- basketball is the most popular team-participation sport among Canadian youth between the ages of 12 and 17. This suggests the NBA must believe hockey is a religion and not a team sport.
It should be noted that Canada has been rapidly rising as a starting point for elite talent. We're all aware that Anthony Bennett is a Canadian who -- after his freshman season at UNLV -- became the first pick of the 2013 NBA Draft. And unless something really unexpected occurs, Canadian Andrew Wiggins will be the first selection in 2014. And, based on his work in summer-league play, Canada's Kelly Olynynk (Boston Celtics) could be one of the league's best rookies. Tyler Ennis (Syracuse freshman) and Trey Lyles (born in Canada, moved to Indiana at age 4 and a star in the high school class of 2014) are next in line, with 15-year-old Jamal Murray also checking in as the MVP of the international game at the most recent Jordan Classic. So, with Steve Nash having stepped in to help with the national team and several club organizations doing well for several years, grassroots basketball in Canada doesn't seem to need any (cough) help from the NBA. But that's really not what's intended, right? Geoff Burke-USA Today Sports
GERRARD HAPPY WITH LAMPARD DECISION
Steven Gerrard is happy that Frank Lampard did not put his international career in jeopardy by moving to theLos Angeles Galaxy. As part of a drive to lower the average age of their squad, Chelsea were reluctant to extend Lampard's contract for most of last season, even though he was playing some of the best football of his long and successful career. While Chelsea dallied, LA Galaxy showed an interest in the midfielder. The promise of a lucrative contract and a luxurious life on the sunny west coast of California would certainly have appealed to Lampard. It would appeal to anyone. But having watched David Beckham's international opportunities dwindle upon moving to America, Lampard was keen to remain in the UK and after Chelsea finally came to their senses, the Londoner remained at Stamford Bridge. He has carried his form in to the new season both with club and country and now he stands on the verge of collecting his 100th cap something which Gerrard seems to doubt would have been possible had he moved to Los Angeles.

THE TENNIS SHOWDOWN MARCH 06, 2013 By TFK Kid Contributor Paloma Kluger
STEPHANIE KRAUS FOR TIME FOR KIDS Kids chosen for the USTA's 10 and Under demo pose for a quick photo before hitting the court.
Have you ever wondered how famous tennis champions like Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro became such great athletes? They started off as kids. On Monday, the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) held the BNP Paribas Showdown at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event featured big matches for both men’s and women’s tennis. Before the games, local kids were invited on the court to showcase their tennis skills. The demonstration was part of the USTA’s 10 and Under Tennis program designed to encourage young people to get active and start playing tennis. “These events are designed so that kids can experience tennis in a relaxed, fun atmosphere that will encourage them to get involved–and stay involved–in the sport, ” USTA representative Kurt Kamperman said in a press release. Kids Steal the Show The USTA says the goal of 10 and Under Tennis is to help children learn to play while having fun in the process. The program is now offered in more than 6,500 tennis facilities across the country. Scoring is simplified for the kid match-ups, and players use shorter and lighter racquets, slower-bouncing balls and smaller courts than adult competitors. Kids at the MSG demo showed how they shined with the adjusted equipment and courts. Nickelodeon’s Figure it Out host Jeff Sutphen and The Biggest Loserfitness trainer Bob Harper came out to play with the kids and to announce a comedic play-by-play of the matches. Sutphen shouted to one kid, “Look at that serve, I could write a whole book about it!” When asked who he was rooting for in the night’s professional women’s match, he said “I’m fairly certain Serena could run faster than me, catch me and pick me up over her head, so I’m rooting for her because I don’t want to be on her bad side.”
