Brazil's 'Boyfriend Tracker' app makes spying personal Jenny Barchfield of Associated Press
Brazilians were outraged when they learned their country was a top target of the U.S. National Security Agency's overseas spying operation, with data from billions of calls and emails swept up in Washington's top secret surveillance program. Yet when it comes to the cloak and dagger effort of catching philandering lovers, all hightech weapons appear to be fair game — at least to the tens of thousands of Brazilians who downloaded "Boyfriend Tracker" to their smartphones before the stealthy software was removed from the Google Play app store last week, apparently in response to complaints about privacy abuses and its potential to be used for extortion or even stalking. "Brazilians are a jealous people, what can I say? Of course it's going to be popular," said Marcia Almeida, a 47-year-old woman in Rio whose marriage ended seven years ago in large part because of what she said was her husband's infidelity. "It's a different type of spying," she said of comparisons to the NSA surveillance program. "You're checking up on somebody you know intimately, not some stranger." The app, called "Rastreador de Namorados" (Portuguese for Boyfriend Tracker), promises to act like a "private detective in your partner's pocket." Functions include sending the person doing the tracking updates on their partner's location and forwarding duplicates of text message traffic from the targeted phone. There is even a command that allows a user to force the target phone to silently call their own, like a pocket dial, so they can listen in on what the person is saying.
Great friendships are priceless If you're lucky enough to have one of these types of women by your side in life, never let them go.
The good friends in your life are often overshadowed by the drama the bad ones bring. Sure, you complain about the faux friends in your world – you know, the shady ones, you can’t half trust, who are more like acquaintances, and you can’t wait to hang up the phone and talk about? – but what about the keepers? The one who calls you back to check on you, even when you rudely told her to leave you be; the one who went with you to that party so you could save face when your date blew you off. If you’re blessed enough to 1. She may not always have the answers, but you’re kindred souls, so she will understand. 2. Her friendship challenges you to go places you’ve never been, do things you swore you couldn’t, and reach heights you never imagined you could soar to 3. Your private matters are safest with her, and you know it; that’s why you tell her everything 4. f you have an extra ticket, she’s there. When it’s raining, and no on else feels like coming out for a drink, she’s already on her way. 5. Most-likely the loudest one in your circle, this friend has zero problems telling you what’s on her mind. 6. When you’re at your weakest, she’s strong for you. Her words of wisdom and support echo in your heart and soul and lift you back to happy places

47-story skyscraper would be more userfriendly if it had an elevator
Let's get right to the point. If you're building a 47-story building, you’re going to need an elevator. Unfortunately, that was a point overlooked by the architectural brain trust who designed the Intempo skyscraper in Benidorm, Spain. The condo building was initially meant to be 20-stories. When developers decided to move skyward, they reportedly neglected to reconfigure their plans to accommodate the necessary elevators. The Intempo was intended to symbolize hope and prosperity, showing that Benidorm was recovering from financial issues. What happens with the building remains to be seen, but at the very least, prospective tenants can get rid of their Stairmasters.

Lady Gaga urges Miley Cyrus critics to lighten up Sept. 1, 2013, 6:12 PM EST Lady Gaga has called on music fans and critics alike to "lighten up" following the storm of controversy surrounding Miley Cyrus' raunchy performance at the recent MTV Video Music Awards. Bing: Billy Ray Cyrus comments on daughter's performance
The former "Hannah Montana" actress/singer hit headlines for all the wrong reasons last weekend when she stripped down to nude-colored PVC underwear and donned a giant, foam finger on her hand as she sang and danced provocatively with Robin Thicke and made inappropriate gestures to the live audience at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The sexually-charged performance upset officials at America's Parents Television Council and prompted stars such as Cyrus' former TV mom, Brooke Shields, and singer Cyndi Lauper to express their distaste at the 20-year-old's onstage antics, but Gaga insists the youngster's detractors need to back off - because it's all in the name of fun. Gaga has declined to share her own opinions about Cyrus' racy set, but tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "I don't like to pass judgment on Miley. Generally, people need to lighten up about pop music, it's about entertainment. It is here to make people feel happy. Especially in America there is an excessive dragging of female artists and I don't want to contribute to that."
Miley Cyrus’ Biggest A week later, Miley Cyrus‘ performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awardsis still the only thing anyone wants to talk about. Unfortunately, not everyone is talking nicely about it. HollywoodLife.com rounded up the eight craziest examples of celebrities dissing Miley’s raunchy foam-finger display — and you won’t believe some of the people speaking out! Miley’s Biggest VMA Disses Revealed: A few of our favorite stars took subtle jabs at Miley by copying her nowsignature tongue extension. Both Harry Styles and Selena Gomez were photographed “just being Miley” on red carpets following her VMA performance. Meanwhile, Drake couldn’t even look at her while she pranced on stage, and Kelly Clarkson tweeted that the whole shoe was full of “#PitchyStrippers.” Even Brooke Shields, who played Miley’s mom on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, had not-so-nice things to say. ”I was Hannah Montana’s mother; where did I go wrong?” Brooke said the next day on the Today show.
VMA Disses “I just want to know who’s advising her, and why [the racy display] is necessary. … I feel like it’s a bit desperate.” Ross Mathews – whose new show, Hello Ross, debuts Oct. 6 at 10:30 p.m. on E! — also stopped by our office the day after the VMAs to talk all things Miley, describing her as seeming like “the drunk girl who doesn’t know when to leave the party.” Also shockingly, the Parents Television Council — of which Miley’s dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, is an advisory board member — released a lengthy statement, criticizing Miley and claiming she “substituted talent for sex.” Ouch! But the most outrageous — and some might say accurate — description of Miley’s on-stage antics came from the mother of her coperformer, Robin Thicke! “I think she’s misbegotten in this attempt of hers,” his mom Gloria Loring, told OMG! Insider. ”And I think it was not beneficial. I didn’t get what her point was. … It was so over the top as to almost be a parody of itself.” Yikes! HollywoodLifers, now that you’ve had a week to think about it, how do YOU feel about Miley’s VMA performance? Was it way too much, or are we making way too big a deal about it? Cast your vote below!
Coca-Cola under fire in Mexico In the U.S., Mexican-made glass bottles of Coca-Cola(KO +0.21%) have become the soft drink world's version of a delicacy -- a throwback to when the drink was made with cane sugar instead of the high-fructose corn syrup that was added to the U.S. version after the New Coke debacle of the late '80s. With Mexico now sitting atop the United Nations' list of the world's most obese nations, that sugary staple is now under fire. Not surprisingly, New York Mayor and sodaban proponent Michael Bloomberg is involved.
The Wall Street Journal reports that, this summer, a series of ads posted on buses, billboards and along subway platforms in Mexico City showed 12 heaping spoonfuls of sugar next to a roughly 20-ounce bottle of soda. The ads asked: "Would you eat 12 spoonfuls of sugar? Why do you drink soda?" El Poder del Consumidor, a public-interest group that financed the campaign, draws contributions from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the umbrella organization for Mayor Bloomberg's charitable activities.
With that in mind, the campaign isn't exactly an overreaction. Mexico recently passed the U.S. as the most obese nation with a population of 100 million or more. Seven out of 10 Mexican adults over the age of 20 are either overweight or obese, according to the country's latest national health survey. An estimated 10 million Mexicans have diabetes, or roughly 9% of the population, the highest proportion in any country with more than 100 million inhabitants. Diabetes is now Mexico's second-biggest killer after heart disease, up from ninth place in 1980

1-Year-Old Boy Is Fatally A manhunt was underway Monday for the man who fatally shot a 16-month-old boy in his stroller on a Brooklyn street Sunday night, authorities said. Antiq Hennis and his parents were a block from their home in the Brownsville section when witnesses said three or four shots were fired. Local media, citing law enforcement sources and family members, reported that the child's father was the intended target, but that Antiq was shot in the head. The child's father was unharmed but distraught after the bullets, a neighbor told the New York Daily News. "He was screaming 'My baby got shot.' He was going crazy," said Gina Gamboa. "The baby was breathing, but his eyes were closed. It's crazy. They just will start shooting. The New York Post reported that his father, Anthony Hennis, has a record of more than 20 arrests in New York and Pennsylvania for narcotics, weapons possession and other crimes. The Daily News said detectives believe the shooting was payback for an earlier dispute. Antiq was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where he died just before 9 p.m.
Shot in Brooklyn
Outside the hospital, a woman who said she was Antiq's godmother was shaking with grief, The New York Times reported. She said she had kissed him goodbye. "Oh, God, he's so innocent," she said. "He was very energetic, happy," said the child'd uncle, Chris Dobson. He said Antiq's parents, who hail from Trinidad, celebrated their son's first birthday in May. "Tragedy happened," Dobson said. "It's just sad." Bishop Willie Billops of the Church of Faith, Hope and Charity, who knows the boy's father, told the Post that he drove the parents to the hospital to identify the body of their only child. "I'm outraged at the murder of a one-year-old baby," Billops said. "I grew up in this neighborhood and I've seen a lot — but this is the worst." "The family is shocked and devastated," Councilman Charles Barron told the Daily News. "The child didn't even get a chance to start his life, and now it's over.“
7 ways your personality can affect your longevity. Think about other people your age. Some probably look 10 years older than you, while others appear 10 years younger. People age at different rates, and some live much longer than others. Dr. Nir Barzilai, director of the Institute for Aging Research at Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, ponders these facts daily. His Longevity Genes Project studied more than 500 healthy participants ranging from 95 to 112 years old. The results? Half were overweight or obese, 60 percent of men and 30 percent of women had smoked for many years, and few exercised. Only 2 percent were vegetarians. “As a group, they didn’t do what we ask our patients to do,” Barzilai said. The biggest predictor of living to 100 was how long people’s parents had lived, not lifestyle factors. But Barzilai and other researchers are also studying how personality affects longevity. -- By Teresa Bergen for MSN Healthy Living
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Conscientiousness - Longevity is difficult to study because a thorough research project can take longer than the researchers’ life spans Extraversion - Meaningful connections to others may add years to your life. Love promotes positive emotions. Optimism - Despite many centenarians having difficult lives, they’re remarkably optimistic, Barzilai says. Volunteerism - Konrath’s research reveals that your motivation for volunteering dictates whether helping others will increase your longevity or not. Marriage - “Being in a stable, healthy marriage is certainly a good thing for everyone,” Industriousness - While chronic physiological disturbance is detrimental, the stress caused by hard work and a demanding career bolsters longevity, Career success - People who not only worked hard but were successful in their chosen career had the best results.
Nyad 1st to swim to Florida from Cuba without cage Looking dazed and sunburned, U.S. endurance swimmer Diana Nyad walked ashore Monday, becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the help of a shark cage. The 64-year-old Nyad swam up to the beach just before 2 p.m. EDT, about 53 hours after starting her journey from Havana on Saturday. As she approached, spectators waded into waist-high water and surrounded her, taking pictures and cheering her on. "I have three messages. One is, we should never, ever give up. Two is, you're never too old to chase your dream. Three is, it looks like a solitary sport, but it is a team," she said on the beach. "I have to say, I'm a little bit out of it right now," Nyad said. She gestured toward her swollen lips, and simply said "seawater." Her team said she had been slurring her words while out in the water. She was placed on a stretcher on the beach and received an IV before she was taken by ambulance to a hospital. But her doctor later declared her essentially healthy and expected her to recover quickly from dehydration, swelling and sunburn. "I just wanted to get out of the sun," she said after coming ashore on a scorching, sunny day amid calm seas. It was Nyad's fifth attempt and what she had said would be her last try to complete the approximately 110-mile swim. She tried three times in 2011 and 2012. Her first attempt was in 1978. "It's historic, marvelous," said Jose Miguel Diaz Escrich, the Hemingway Marina commodore who helped organize the Cuba side of Nyad's multiple attempts. "I always thought she could do it given her internal energy, her mental and physical strength, her will of iron," said Diaz Escrich, whom Nyad has called a longtime friend. "More than the athletic feat, she wants to send a message of peace, love, friendship and happiness ... between the people of the United States and Cuba, " he added.

Quinoa, mushrooms and coca: Bolivian says ancient Andean diet has kept him alive for 123 years By Santiago Limachi, Reuters FRASQUIA, Bolivia — Bolivian indigenous farmer Carmelo Flores, who could be the oldest person to have ever lived, attributes his longevity to quinoa grains, riverside mushrooms and around-the-clock chewing of coca leaves. Speaking in the 4,000-meter high hamlet where he lives in a straw-roofed hut, Flores says the traditional Andean diet has kept him alive for 123 years. "Potatoes with quinoa are delicious," said Flores in Aymara, the only language the nearly deaf man speaks. It is impossible to verify Flores' age as the poor, landlocked South American country only started issuing official birth certificates in 1940. But he says his baptism certificate lists his birthday as July 16, 1890 and he has national identity documents based on the certificate. Bolivia's Civil Registry Office says it is looking into the validity of the documents and cannot comment until the investigation is completed. Still, many in Bolivia are already celebrating Flores' longevity. A local government official plans to award him the title of "Living Heritage of Humanity" on August 26. The title of oldest human being ever to have lived belongs to France's Jeanne Calment, who died at the age of 122 in 1997, according to the Guinness World Records organization. Guinness did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on Flores. While Flores is still strong enough to take daily walks in shoes made of recycled tires, he spends most of his time laying on a blanket watching village life go by. But his life was not always as sedentary. Flores said he fought in the brutal 1932-35 Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay, and had to hunt skunks to nourish himself. He also briefly lived in La Paz, 50 miles away, but never took to the bustling capital. "My father told me that he felt like he was in jail, locked up with a key," said Flores' only living son Cecilio, 67, who cares for him. "He ... just wanted to return to his land." Back in his village of Frasquia, Flores is something of a loner now that his generational peers have long since died. "Everyone who lived here has already died, men and women, I am the only who is still alive. Even my wife died," he said. "I don't know how long I shall live," he adds. "Only God knows. He'll tell me if I will die or keep living."
Domestic violence perpetrators to get ankle bracelets BY THOMAS TRACY / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2013, 1:46 AM
The device has GPS and will let cops know if a convicted abuser comes within a half-mile of socalled 'exclusion zones,' designed to keep a victim safe. 'All too often I hear about victims who have been given court-issued orders of protection and those orders are then violated by the defendant,' says Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan. Staten Island batterers beware: Big Brother is tracking you. Some Richmond County residents convicted of domestic violence are participating in a new program that places a monitor on their ankle to immediately alert cops if they comes within a mile of their victims.... The state Legislature this week approved $510,000 in funding to revive a state Judicial Branch pilot program that places global positioning system-equipped ankle bracelets on high-risk domestic violence offenders. The initiative was a response to the growing number of domestic violence shootings and assaults.
Men’s self-confidence drops when their girlfriends succeed While the same is not true for women, it appears that men do not bask in the glory of having wives or girlfriends that are successful. The subconscious self-esteem of men might actually be bruised when their partner succeeds, according to a new study published by the American Psychological Association. It didn’t appear to matter if their partner was intelligent or an excellent hostess, men were still more likely to subconsciously feel worse about themselves when their female partner succeeded compared to when she failed. However, women’s self-esteem was not affected when their male partners succeeded or failed. “It makes sense that a man might feel threatened if his girlfriend outperforms him in something they’re doing together, such as trying to lose weight,” said the study’s lead author, Kate Ratliff, PhD, of the University of Florida. “But this research found evidence that men automatically interpret a partner’s success as their own failure, even when they’re not in direct competition” Men tended to feel worse about themselves when they thought about a time that their female partner had thrived at something in which they had failed themselves, the findings showed. Researchers studied 896 participants in five different experiments. In one experiment, 32 couples from the University of Virginia were given a test about problem solving and social intelligence and told their partner scored in either the top or bottom 12 percent of all the students at the university. Just hearing that their partner had scored well or poorly on the test did not appear to have any effect on how each said they felt. Participants were also given a test to determine how they felt subconsciously about how their partner performed. On this test, a computer tracked how quickly each person associated good or bad words with themselves

“Docking at the beach is a regular practice,” said a spokesperson with the Ministry of Defense (via RT). “What we don’t know is what people were doing at the beach, which is within the military firing range.” It’s not clear whether that statement’s accurate: Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda, cited by RT in its story, reported that the base the defense ministry spokesperson is referring to is in Khmelevka, reportedly located several kilometers from the beach at Mechnikovo where the hovercraft came ashore.
