STUDENT-ATHLETE MISSION STATEMENT
Athletic
EXCELLENCE
Lamar University is committed to an intercollegiate athletic program that embodies academic, athletic and financial integrity. This constancy must be manifest primarily in an athletic program is is always in concert with the overall mission of the University and complements the values and goals of higher education. As a part of the total educational process at Lamar, the intercollegiate athletic program should bring pride, admiration and loyalty to the University. In this context, Lamar University intercollegiate athletic program will benefit the student body, alumni, faculty, staff and local community through the development of espirit de corps. The soundness of the athletic program must also be evident in a commitment to enhance the educational growth and development of student-athletes and to abide by the letter and spirit of the rules and regulations set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and The Southland Conference.
E EXPERIENCE C.H. A .M.P.S.
LIFE SKILLS The C.H.A.M.P.S./Life Skills program was developed by the NCAA to prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field. The program is designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs, focusing on the person as a whole — academically, athletically and emotionally — and on the changing needs of that person in the years during and after college. The program stresses five points of learning. Those areas of commitment that are viewed as critical to personal growth include: academic excellence, athletics excellence, personal development, community service and career development. For instance, academic commitment may focus on study skills, goal-setting and time management, while personal development may include fiscal responsibility and stress management.

SOUTHEAST TEXAS ABOUT BEAUMONT
The Golden
TRIANGLE
Founded in the early 1800s, Beaumont offers a myriad of activities for people who enjoy the outdoors as well as museums, galleries and historic homes. Southeast Texas is a natural and cultural crossroads, rich in history and offering the best of several different worlds to visitors and residents alike. Beaumont’s history is one of the more interesting aspects of the city that came of age at the turn of the century. On January 10, 1901, the first great oil well in the world, the Anthony F. Lucas Gusher, blew at Spindletop. The population in Beaumont had been 8,500 people, but within a month of the discovery of oil, the population rose to 30,000. The Spindltop/Gladys City Boomtown Museum on campus re-creates the event. Much more than a college town, Beaumont’s climate and location make outdoor activity a year-round pastime. Nearly two million people a year enjoy their leisure time at the Beaumont area’s parks, lakes, beaches and wooded areas. For those in search of indoor entertainment, Beaumont has always taken pride in its abundance of fine cultural activities. Known for its many museums, Beaumont also boasts of some of the finest art, music and dance opportunities in the area. The region is the birthplace to music stars George Jones, J.P. Richardson a.k.a. “The Big Bopper,” Janis Joplin, Johnny and Edgar Winter, U.G.K., Mark Chesnutt, Clay Walker and Tracy Byrd. Former NFL coaching greats Jimmy Johnson and Bum Phillips are also natives of the area as was Babe Didrikson Zaharias, considered by many as the greatest female athlete of all time.

Alan
EDWARDS
Head Coach First Season Western Carolina ‘99
Alan Edwards has spent much of his career building volleyball programs into contenders, and on December 20, 2013, he was presented with another opportunity to do just that as he was named Lamar’s head volleyball coach. Edwards comes to Lamar from the University of Tennessee, where he spent three years as an assistant coach. During his first two seasons on campus, he helped the Lady Vols to two NCAA Tournament berths and a 50-12 record, including a 28-4 campaign in 2011 that resulted in a Southeastern Conference championship. A workhorse on the recruiting trail, his final class at UT ranked No. 17 in the nation by prepvolleyball.com. He also aided in the development of six All-Americans. Prior to Tennessee, Edwards was a head coach at two different institutions, most recently Iona from 2006-10. After coming into a program that lost 20 matches in the preceding season, he turned the Gaels into a force to be reckoned with in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference. Compiling a 74-79 overall record in the process, the team made four conference tournament appearances in his five seasons, culminating with a loss to Niagara in the 2010 MAAC championship match.

While at Iona, Edwards also coached one of the NCAA’s all-time digs leaders in Allison Nieters, who collected 2,682 in her four years at Iona, earning a pair of MAAC Defensive Player of the Year awards. The Gaels also had a stellar academic reputation in his time, as three-fourths of his team earned either MAAC All-Academic or Academic Honor Roll accolades.
Edwards also had assistant coaching stints at Wyoming, Troy and Southland member Southeastern Louisiana, and he spent a decade in the high school coaching ranks, where he led Brevard High School to three straight state playoff appearances. A Brevard, N.C., native, Edwards founded Biltmore Volleyball Club and graduated from Western Carolina University in 1999.
Before taking over at Iona, Edwards was tasked with another building project at Mercer. Prior to his arrival, the Bears had won just six of their previous 54 matches. In four seasons, he posted a 52-73 overall record, including a 7-3 conference mark in 2003, which ranked as the best in school history.
Edwards, who resides in Beaumont, has one daughter, Brinsley, and one son, Cole.

Kacie
EHINGER
Assistant Coach First Season Adrian ‘06
Kacie Ehinger is in her first season with Lamar after joining the staff on February 4, 2014. Ehinger joins the program from Marist College, where she served as an assistant coach for three seasons. While at Marist, the Adrian, Michigan, native worked specifically with defensive specialists and primary passers. Last season, she played a major role in the development of MAAC Libero of the Year Brooke Zywick and MAAC Player of the Year Mackenzie Stephens as the Red Foxes went on to claim a share of the conference championship. Ehinger has more than 12 years of experience in collegiate volleyball, beginning with a playing career at Adrian College, where she graduated with a B.A. in Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science in 2006. She was a four-time allconference honoree, earning the league’s defensive player of the year award in 2003. Following her playing career, Ehinger accepted an assistant coaching position Defiance College, where she helped the Lady Jackets to a massive turnaround, improving from 6-27 her first season to conference finalists a year later. She would graduate from Defiance with an M.A. in education in 2009. After returning to her alma mater for the 2009 season, Ehinger coached for Siena Heights in 2010 before joining the staff at Marist in 2011.
