Since 2004, the Lamar distance program has been the class of the Southland Conference, and this is most evident in the success of the cross country team over the past decade, which has seen the men and women combine to win 11 conference championships.

A Decade of

DOMINANCE

Cards do the DOUBLE

In 2013, the Lamar men and women each took home Southland Championships. Over the last decade, the Cards have accomplished the feat twice, which is two more times than any other conference school over that time.

STUDENT-ATHLETE MISSION STATEMENT

Athletic

EXCELLENCE

Lamar University is committed to an intercollegiate athletic program that embodies academic, athletic and financial integrity. This constancy must be manifest primarily in an athletic program is is always in concert with the overall mission of the University and complements the values and goals of higher education. In this context, Lamar University intercollegiate athletic program will benefit the student body, alumni, faculty, staff and local community through the development of espirit de corps. The soundness of the athletic program must also be evident in a commitment to enhance the educational growth and development of student-athletes and to abide by the letter and spirit of the rules and regulations set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and The Southland Conference.

E EXPERIENCE C.H. A .M.P.S.

LIFE SKILLS The C.H.A.M.P.S./Life Skills program was developed by the NCAA to prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field. The program is designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs, focusing on the person as a whole — academically, athletically and emotionally — and on the changing needs of that person in the years during and after college. The program stresses five points of learning. Those areas of commitment that are viewed as critical to personal growth include: academic excellence, athletics excellence, personal development, community service and career development. For instance, academic commitment may focus on study skills, goal-setting and time management, while personal development may include fiscal responsibility and stress management.

SOUTHEAST TEXAS ABOUT BEAUMONT

The Golden

TRIANGLE

Founded in the early 1800s, Beaumont offers a myriad of activities for people who enjoy the outdoors as well as museums, galleries and historic homes. Southeast Texas is a natural and cultural crossroads, rich in history and offering the best of several different worlds to visitors and residents alike. Beaumont’s history is one of the more interesting aspects of the city that came of age at the turn of the century. On January 10, 1901, the first great oil well in the world, the Anthony F. Lucas Gusher, blew at Spindletop. The population in Beaumont had been 8,500 people, but within a month of the discovery of oil, the population rose to 30,000. The Spindltop/Gladys City Boomtown Museum on campus re-creates the event. Much more than a college town, Beaumont’s climate and location make outdoor activity a year-round pastime. Nearly two million people a year enjoy their leisure time at the Beaumont area’s parks, lakes, beaches and wooded areas. For those in search of indoor entertainment, Beaumont has always taken pride in its abundance of fine cultural activities. Known for its many museums, Beaumont also boasts of some of the finest art, music and dance opportunities in the area. The region is the birthplace to music stars George Jones, J.P. Richardson a.k.a. “The Big Bopper,” Janis Joplin, Johnny and Edgar Winter, U.G.K., Mark Chesnutt, Clay Walker and Tracy Byrd. Former NFL coaching greats Jimmy Johnson and Bum Phillips are also natives of the area as was Babe Didrikson Zaharias, considered by many as the greatest female athlete of all time.

Darren

GAUSON

Cross Country Coach Third Season Napier ‘06, Butler ‘08

Darren Gauson was named distance and cross country coach on September 17, 2012, and in that short time, he’s built upon Lamar’s outstanding distance tradition. Last season, the Edinburgh, Scotland, native guided both the men’s and women’s cross country programs to Southland Conference titles. Matt Johnsen and Ash Harrell were key in the success for the men, finishing 1-2 at the conference meet en route to qualifying for the NCAA National Championships. The women’s team, which had not tasted Southland glory since 2006, was comprised almost entirely of Gauson’s first recruiting class at LU. The group demolished the field at the conference championships on the way to posting its best finish at the NCAA South Central Regional since 2007. Following the season, Gauson was named the conference’s coach of the year for both the men and the women. In all, nine LU runners earned a spot on the All-Southland teams, and two more took home honorable mentions. Johnsen was named Athlete of the Year and both Harrell and Leigh Lattimore earned Newcomer of the Year. The success of LU’s distance program carried over into track and field season as Sam Stabler became just the second-ever Cardinal to break the four-minute barrier in the mile, finishing with a school-record converted time of 3:59.33. He would go on to set the conference meet record in the mile, earning Indoor Athlete of the Year after taking home both the mile and 3,000 meter crowns as well as running the mile leg of a distance medley relay team that set a meet, facility and school record. Louise Webb, who claimed athlete of the year for the women during indoor season, became the first ever Southland runner to earn both the 800 and 3,000 titles in the same meet, and she also grabbed a title in the distance medley relay.

In all, the LU distance program claimed a league-best eight titles at the indoor meet. Stabler continued his dominance outdoors, earning a berth into the NCAA meet and claiming both the 1,500 and 5,000 crowns at the conference championships. Lattimore earned the newcomer award once more for the outdoor season as she took home the Southland 5,000 crown. She went on to join fellow Gauson mentees Stabler, Webb and 800 runner Aaron Bennett at the NCAA West Preliminary. Joining the program just after the start of the 2012 campaign, Gauson directed Johnsen to the NCAA Championships, placing 33rd and becoming just the fourth Lamar harrier to earn All-American honors since 1969. As his first year turned to the indoor season, two more of his athletes made some noise as both Joe Wade and Becky Gough took home Southland Conference indoor titles. Wade earned the mile championship, his third win of the season in the event, with a time of 4:08.80, marking the fastest time at the SLC meet since 1998. Gough won the 3,000 meter run, completing the race in 10:10.05. During outdoor season, Wade earned his fifth career Southland title with a 1,500 meter win and ended the season with the top conference times in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs as well as the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Both Gough and Claire Miles also earned all-conference designation in two events.

Over his two-year stint with the Red and White, Gauson has seen his athletes earn 12 Southland individual titles, three track school records and 16 top-five entries on the LU’s all-time track performance list. Prior to Lamar, Gauson spent four seasons with Butler University, helping develop and maintain one of the most successful programs in the Horizon League. While at BU, the Bulldog men continued a streak of 14 consecutive conference championships in cross country, including a 29th place finish at the NCAA National Championships in 2008. He was also pivotal in the individual development of a number of athletes, including four All-Americans (Andrew Baker, Callum Hawkins, Steve Lisgo and Rob Mullet). Gauson also worked with sprinters and hurdlers, helping the group break four school records in three years. Prior to joining the Bulldog staff, Gauson was a standout athlete for BU for two seasons, earning a Horizon League crown in the 1,500 meter run in 2008. He’s also a former Scottish national champion in the event, winning in both 2004 and 2005. A 2006 graduate of Napier University in Scotland, Gauson holds a bachelor’s degree in sport and exercise science. He completed his master’s in education at Butler in 2008. Gauson is married to the former Marbeth Shiell.

Trey

CLARK

Head Track & Field Coach 16th Season Lamar ‘93, ‘95

With 15 years under his belt at the helm of the Lamar men’s and women’s track and field and cross country teams, Trey Clark has become the face of one of the region’s most-storied programs. Clark, a former sprinter and hurdler for the Cardinals, initially stepped foot on campus in 1988, and after serving as an assistant coach from 1994-99, he was named the school’s sixth head coach on August 11, 1999. In that time, he’s coached 86 Southland Conference individual champions, seven All-Americans and 10 Southland Athletes of the Year. Arguably his most impressive accomplishment has been the re-establishment of Lamar as the dominant distance program in the Southland Conference. The men grabbed their seventh championship in eight years this past fall, and the women joined them on the victory stand in November, taking home their fourth overall. Individually, five distance performers have been named to an All-American team. Francis Kasagule became the first Cardinal to earn the distinction in cross country since 1969 with a 29th place finish at the national meet in 2006, and he built on it the following year with a 24th place showing. Samuel Kosgei followed in his footsteps in 2008 with a 37th place finish, and added to it further by becoming the first-ever LU indoor track All-American in 2009.

Clark has coached two outdoor track AllAmericans with both Joonas Harjamaki and Tom Wade taking home the honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

A former all-conference performer and fouryear letterwinner, Clark graduated from Lamar in 1993 with a degree in kinesiology. After serving as a part-time assistant in 1994, former coach Barry Collins elevated Clark to a full-time position in 1995.

Most recently, Matt Johnsen placed 33rd at the 2012 Cross Country Championships to join the exclusive club. Clark also earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from Lamar in 1995. However, Clark’s first appearance on the national scene came through his old event, Clark is married to the former Laura Hughes, hurdles. As both an assistant and head coach, and the couple has two sons, Quade and the native of nearby Anahuac mentored Hayden. conference champions Yamelis Ortiz and Mark LeDoux. Ortiz, a four-time conference champion in the 400 meter hurdles, became the first Lamar Olympian since 1984 by earning a spot on Puerto Rico’s 4x400 relay team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. LeDoux was similarly successful, taking home three 400 meter hurdle conference titles and a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Clark was equally important away from Lamar, coaching LeDoux to two appearances at the USA Track and Field Nationals.
