VISION 01 BandWith seeks a new home for music programming for youth on the west side of Chicago. BandWith prioritizes partnerships, expansion opportunities, to grow as an organization and to support continued music scholarship. Providing a permanent home for the program and a community gathering space is central to the aim of the project. Bandwith’s new home should be a place where kids feel encouraged and where all feel welcome. The new facility should assist with attracting and retaining excellent instructors, serve as a home base to support BandWith’s cause, and provide ease of access to programming for community residents. The new facility should help with establishing BandWith’s identity in the city, and provide space for programs that bandwith currently does not have room to accommodate. Finally, the Building should take advantage of it’s location and synergies with other neighbhorhood programs to become a beacon of positivity that the local community can rally around and depend on for years to come.

“Our mission is to positively affect the lives of underserved Chicago youth by providing lasting access to exceptional musical instruction and ensemble play.”

PROCESS DEFINE, DEVELOP, AND DESIGN

02 The design process of creating a new facility for BandWith includes: Development of the program. This includes visioning, zoning and code analysis, site analysis, precedent analysis, and incorporation of best practices. Design of concept alternatives. This phase includes development of concept plans, site development, program development, cost estimating, and compare and contrast. Definition of the project. This includes key person interviews, existing program analysis, strategic planning sessions, site analysis, and research.

Each phase of the project will build on each other to communicate project opportunities. An analysis of existing facilities and key stakeholder interviews to uncover priorities are also part of the design process. The design process is future-focused and strategic in its implementation.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

03 The guiding principles help focus strategic efforts of BandWith to achieve its goals. In addition to supporting architecture and design decisions, the guiding principles can be used to align with BandWith’s mission and vision to ensure a successful future of the organization. Each guiding principle will be developed to communicate design strategies, space requirements, programmatic impacts, and character and identity elements. While all guiding principles are important, they are supported by BandWith’s aspirations and priorities for the organization. These aspirations and priorities center on program related priorities, quality of space priorities and community impact priorities. The principles and priorities work together to realize BandWith’s fullest potential in a responsive and accommodating new space.

03

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Guiding Principles Through discussions with the Steering Commitee, recurring themes were identified by participants as opportunities to guide future development of the organization. These guiding principles for the project support the concept design framework. 1. Rooted in East Garfield Park Committee members envision BandWith’s future facility as a place for this specific community. BandWith is committed to East Garfield Park. Ideally it would help to reinforce the formation of a cultural “hub” in the neighborhood along with the Marillac Center. This should be a place “of the neighborhood,” where everyone feels comfortable and feels like they have access to the programs. 2. Positive Community Impact The new facility should help imbue a sense of stability, and be something that students, stakeholders, and community members can count on. BandWith will create a safe space for community that they can love, where they can gather, and that has permanence for generations to come. The program is a part of positive change and stability for East Garfield Park. 3. An Organization that Encourages Musical Excellence BandWith focuses on specific musical instruction, that not only exposes students to instruments, but emphasizes empowerment, social-emotional growth, and musical excellence. BandWith programs attract students that are excited to participate in its programs year after year. BandWith actively recruits program alumni to return to work with the organization in a variety of capacities. The new facility supports these recruiting efforts which leads to retaining excellent instructors. The high quality facility spaces express the high quality music education delivered through high quality programs and instruction. 4. Defined Character and Identity BandWith’s new facility communicates the identity of the organization. The facility also communicates these values to the community, the City of Chicago and the region. BandWith’s identity is a regional leader in music education for youth that is not only a beacon in East Garfield Park, but a leader in recognizing and fostering the talent and skills of its students.

Visioning Workshop On May 11, the consultant team facilitated a visioning workshop with the BandWith Steering Committee. This visioning workshop included four activities that were used to create a foundation for program development. The four exercises were:

1 ASPIRATIONS AND PRIORITIES. This exercise uncovered futurefocused qualitative and quantitative elements for the project.

3 SPACE PROGRAM. Types and sizes of space required for a new facility were identified in this exercise.

2 POSTCARDS FROM THE FUTURE. Participants were asked to write a postcard to their future selves about BandWith in the year 2030.

4 CHARACTER OF SPACE. Participates rated photos that illustrated specific characteristics of space were rated by preference.

PROGRAM 04 To ensure a successful future for BandWith’s facilities, its is important to understand the programmatic requirements for existing and future spaces. This excersize includes both utilization of existing spaces, program and enrollment, as well as, identification of future drivers of change that could impact space, adjacencies, partnerships, and program growth. Of high importance to BandWith is continuing existing relationships with community partners and creating new relationships with both partners and funders. Clear program requirements that are future-focused, flexible and can accommodate growth will support BandWith’s efforts to effectively serve a growing student enrollment.

SITES / OPTIONS 05 Three options will be investigated to realization of BandWith’s vision to expand their footprint in East Garfield Park. BandWith is committed to working with its existing partners at Hope Jr. and Merrillac to continue their relationship and facility use. Each option proposes a phased transition of programs to new facilities located within walking distance of the existing facilities. Preliminary costing is provided for each option to better understand fundraising opportunities and short-, mid-, and long-term goals.

05

SITE / OPTIONS

OPTION 3 - RENOVATION

RELATIVE SIZE COMPARISON OF SITES 2923 W ADAMS ST, CHICAGO, IL 60612

The existing graystone building at 2923 W Adams St. presents an opportunity because of its avaiability, its proximity to the Marillac Center, and it’s adjacency to the existing community garden space directly to its West. The site also poses some significant challenges that make it a less suitable option than the others. Most importantly, the size of this existing building and the limit of allowable F.A.R. restrict the amount of useable space available on this site. This option is not able to accommodate all of the spaces in the BandWith program. Additionally most of the spaces will need to be smaller than ideal, as stated in the program document. Several BandWith functions therefore would still need to be accommodated off-site at another location. KEY CONSIDERATIONS : •

Accessibility challenges. Without adding an elevator, access to upper and lower levels is restricted.

No space for future growth.

Large Gathering Space/Performance Space/Kitchen will need to be accommodated off-site.

Large group rehearsal rooms - this design has one large rehearsal room and three smaller ones. The rooms can be shared among the various disciplines, though all are smaller than programmed.

Dance studio/Lockers - there is no dedicated dance studio since the large rooms must be shared. Dance can practice in the large rehearsal room.

Less storage space than in the program document due to limited building size.

Aspirations and Priorities THE FOLLOWING GOALS WERE IDENTIFIED AS KEY PRIORITIES FROM STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Attract and hold onto excellent instructors A place where people feel comfortable hanging out Be stable for the community Commitment to the East Garfield Park neighborhood A space that the community loves and gathers around Touch, save, and change lives Create a lasting project A building that supports BandWith and make sure it stays in the community. Be a part of positive change and stability in Garfield Park Reflect permanence Be a beacon of light in the community Be a place where kids will be encouraged Serve a lot of kids A Multipurpose space that the community can use. A facility and programs that are accessible to community

The priorities identified below were categorized into three areas that illustrated participant’s goals for how BandWith could fulfill its potential. PROGRAM RELATED PRIORITIES • • • • • • • • • • •

Balance quality of programs with scale of programs Provide types of programs that used to be available at CPS but are no longer offered Hire program alums to Bandwith to run new programs Draw in kids who want to be there Create programs for students to continually grow and develop Focus on specific instruction, not general music Become a CPS vendor to provide music services Add a vocal program Have a strong identity that people really want to get their kids into Identifable identity Excellent WIFI

QUALITY OF SPACE PRIORITIES • • • • • • •

Central hub Welcoming Fun Transparent Spaces should be designed to have correct and excellent acoustics. Long-term Impact The building should help make it obvious that the programs are available for everyone.

COMMUNITY IMPACT PRIORITIES • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Mentorship A place to recognize and capture the talent of all the kids Communicate the worth of the program to a broader audience Understand values of the program that are important to non-musicians and non-designers Commitment to neighborhood first Neighborhood ownership of the program Embedded in community, not superficial relationship Sense of permanence and something you can count on Build a cultural ‘hub’ in the neighborhood by adjacency to Marillac Center. Defining Character of Space DEFINING THE CHARACTER OF SPACE The exercise Illustrated here was performed with the BandWith steering committee and board of directors to determine desired spatial characteristics for the new facility. RESULTING PREFERENCES AS FOLLOWS: • • • • • •

The space should have room to grow. The group leaned towards an adaptive reuse aesthetic, however there was consensus about a good balance between new and reuse aesthetic. Most spaces should be complete and useable on day 1. Unfinished expansion space for a later date should be provided if possible. The project should be focussed on providing space dedicated to the students, however there should be some venue for shared/external events even though that’s not the main focus. The project should maintain focus on staying tied to the community The project should seek a balance between modern digital and classic analog from an aesthetic perspective. The project should support the latest digital recording technology, and be acoustically excellent. The look of the building does not have to be sleek futuristic in order to incorporate modern technology. However, students are drawn to the newest technology so finding a way to highlight it would be useful.
