FANTASY MENU SEPTEMBER 2020
THE GOURMET BOYS
IN PREVIOUS EDITIONS WE HAVE CREATED OUR “FANTASY MENU”: A FAVOURITE STARTER, MAIN AND DESSERT FROM OUR MONTHLY CULINARY ADVENTURES. THIS MONTH WE’VE DECIDED TO RING THE CHANGES BY SHARING OUR FAVOURITE POST LOCKDOWN BREAKFAST, LUNCH, EVENING MAIN AND DESSERT.
DURING AUGUST WE STARTED VENTURING OUT TO DINE, TEMPTED BY “EAT OUT TO HELP OUT”, AND IT WAS GREAT TO SEE MANY RESTAURANTS FULLY BOOKED FROM MONDAY TO WEDNESDAY. THE SCHEME WAS EXCELLENT VALUE WITH UP TO 50% OFF, UP TO A MAXIMUM OF £10 PER PERSON. SOME VENUES HAVE DECIDED TO FUND A CONTINUATION OF THE DEAL DURING SEPTEMBER, SO YOU’LL NEED TO CHECK WITH EACH RESTAURANT WHAT’S ON OFFER, AS THEY VARY CONSIDERABLY.
MAY WE PRESENT OUR BEST POST LOCKDOWN PLATES :-
BREAKFAST FREIGHT BELFAST
BREAKFAST Freight Belfast:
Passing CS Lewis Square on the Newtownards Road, you could easily mistake “Freight” for some unremarkable industrial storage, and continue towards Ballyhackamore for some traditional breakfast fare. This would be a great shame as these containers house one of East Belfast’s quirkier eateries.
An excellent choice is the Vietnamese scrambled egg, accompanied by puffed rice, beansprouts and other seasonal vegetables, served on a delicious caramelised onion flatbread, liberally sprinkled with seeds and chilli.
This Asian breakfast alternative is fresh, spicy, and full of flavour.
LUNCH Urban Scullery:
Recently rebranded, with a new chef and culinary concept, Urban Scullery is situated at the city end of the Newtownards Road and is an excellent choice for a lunchtime treat that won’t break the bank, but uses quality local ingredients to create tasty and inventive dishes.
We decided to share the 3 Tacos for £10 and chose; - the curried chicken with pineapple salsa and coronation mayo - the baked haddock fingers with curried peas and tartare sauce - the veggie chilli with guacamole and spicy mayo.
We also had the Green Giant salad of fresh leaves, broccoli, courgette, edamame beans, peppers and kale with hot dressing.
Together, this made a filling, but healthy lunch for two.

DINNER No14 at The Georgian House, Comber:
After many weeks of cycling past and admiring the newly refurbished No14, we decided that a visit was long overdue, and what a pleasure it was. A fifteen minute drive from Belfast, (or thirty, if like us you cycle the Greenway) this is a beautiful building retaining many original features and the quality of the food is of a very high standard. Fresh seafood is always available; lobster, scallops, mackerel and seabass, were just some of the temptations on view as we entered the restaurant, and the fabulous langoustine tails on the specials board sounded too good to miss. amusement, our waitress announced that they were “all heads” and the chef would not be serving them this evening, so instead we plumped for the fresh salmon. This was a succulent flaky pink fillet, with a perfectly crispy skin and a selection of grilled market vegetables.
Jim, the chef, then gave us a quick tour of the building, and he shared some of his plans with us which are sure to make No14 at
The Georgian House the
“go to” culinary venue in
Comber.
DESSERT Oliver’s Restaurant:
DINNER NUMBER 14 @ THE GEORGIAN HOUSE, COMBER After a deliciously satisfying two courses at
Oliver’s Restaurant, we decided that we weren’t going to have dessert, but felt obliged to “have a look”!
And as we have the willpower of a gnat we simply couldn’t resist, and plumped for the chocolate and cookie slider and the baked lemon tart Alaska with bitter chocolate ice-cream, which was a particular favourite: light crispy pastry topped with tangy lemon curd and cocoa-rich ice cream, smothered in Italian meringue, toasted, and served with a splash of raspberry coulis.
Soft and fluffy decadence on a plate!!
