EDITOR’S LETTER Christmas seems like a lifetime ago… I think my liver has just about recovered. January is nasty month – it seems to go on forever, and for most of us our pay has to last for almost six weeks. However, that’s all behind us now! This is our February / March issue, taking in Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Have a flick to our A-Z which covers all things LURVE related, and come March you’ll be ready to party after reading about the Three Bars of St. Patrick’s Day. With her comeback just around the corner we caught up with Samantha Mumba! We also chatted to Shane Bitney Crone who we’ve all seen in Bridegroom the Movie, and the YouTube “It Could Happen to You” video. Local boy done good, Conleth Kane, is our latest columnist, offering his review on the best play to see, track to listen to, and movie to watch. The regulars are back too –Greg talks about his latest dating disaster; Jordan & Diona give us a chuckle; Gemma Hutton puts the world to rights; our resident agony aunt, Trudy Scrumptious, sharpens her tongue to solve your most pressing problems; and Tony Webster of Big Bad Llama is back with another amazing fashion shoot. We go south of the border and speak to Pol about “coming out”. You’ll have seen the GNI banners out and about over the last couple of months and in this issue we have six pages full of your faces – go find yourself. The search for the GNI Hottest Bartender 2014 is on! You’ll find the contestants inside and you can vote online at www.gnimag.com. Have fun and keep good. Tony

NEWS IN BRIEFS 2013: The Year of the ‘Out’ Athlete In December 2013 Tom Daley made a splash after posting a touching YouTube video letting the world know he’d met a man and was happy in love. It wasn’t just Tom who dove headfirst and went public with his news, other spor tspeople who came out in 2013 include NBA player Jason Collins; ex footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger; soccer player Robbie Rogers; figure skater Brian Boitano; swimmer Amini Fonua; speedskater Anastasia Bucsis; WWE wrestler Darren Young; snowboarder Belle Brockhoff; and heaps more. Good for them! Let’s hope this will help more LGBT spor tspeople come out in the future.

Water Mess

Par ts of the UK have been underwater for the whole of 2014! Soon we’ll de-evolve into water dwelling creatures, complete with gills, fins and

A herd of German cows must have consumed way too many baked beans. They managed to release enough methane gas to cause an explosion in their shed, blowing the roof clean off. *Just one cow was harmed in the making of this mega methane blast.*

“Soon we’ll de-evolve into water dwelling creatures.” scaly skin… or perhaps, given all this new technology people never seem to get tired of inventing, we’ll all soon have a pair of pop-up, fold-away speedboats for feet.

Lights, Camera… Belfast?! Looks like good old Belfast will soon be welcoming scores of hot actors into her bountiful bosom… and not just those angry, dir ty, hairy guys from GOT. Yes, it has been announced that two big film studios will be built in the Titanic Quar ter in the near future. Hollywood, here we come!

My friends always tease me. I know they’re just joking and I take it in good humour but it’s started to make me really unhappy. Help?! Sarah, Coleraine

Hello my queer connoisseurs! My name is Trudy Scrumptious and I have been described as a good bottle of wine; timeless, long neck, big bottom, and you need to swirl me around your mouth before you get the taste!!! Now, let’s hear about you .....

Ahh Sarah the only thing your friends should be teasing is your hair with a comb!! Big hair is fabulous!! If they continue with it secretly cyber bully them! It’s not the right thing to do but you’ll feel much better! PS. seriously consider big hair!!

I have a lot of gay friends, work in a gay environment and even like Cher! The problem is my gay buddies won’t go to the straight bars: it’s Kremlin this and Maverick that all the time. What to do? Seamus, Twinbrook To quote any Star Wars film “come to the dark side !” Or “feel the force within you !” Or “homosexual you are my young seamus!”

I’ve been dating a girl for a few months and we are very much an item, but she won’t consummate the relationship. She says I’m the sexiest girl she’s met and I know for a fact she’s not been shy in the past. What’s wrong with me???? Ready to burst, Downpatrick Maybe you’re not sexy?

I see you out and about and I love your look! Where do you get all your fab gowns? Feargal, Belfast Hello Feargal, What have I told you? The cour t injunction means NO CONTACT!! Stop trying to steal my look you psycho….. Thanks for the compliments though babes xxx

There’s a guy at work I really fancy, but he’s straight. I worry that at the staff night out I’ll get drunk and make a move. Should I just not go? Padraig, Strabane

The guy I’ve been seeing won’t change his relationship status on Facebook to ‘in a relationship’ and he’s still got his Grindr profile. Should I get rid? Gerard, Malahide It sounds like your current beau has a touch of the ‘I wanna live a double life online’. Under these circumstances I find it’s best to let him take his time and do not pressurize him into anything…. Meanwhile, set up an alias profile and see if he has the intention to chase it up! After that, wait for a big occasion and show him the evidence you collected! VERY EASTENDERS DONTCHA THINK!?

Oh padraig! May I call you P.drag? That’s the perfect excuse!! Now go get ‘er bucked!!

Kitsch Bitch can help with your woes. Get in touch at info@ gnimag.com - If you’re brave enough!

GNITALKS TO...

Your YouTube video ‘It Could Happen To You’ has over 4.5m views! I hoped maybe a few hundred or thousand would see the video, but two million saw it within days of its release. It was a whirlwind. There I was, this young man from Montana, totally unaware of the impact my story would have on people. I received an outpouring of suppor t from men and women who had endured similar tragedies and even straight people who were formerly apathetic to LGBTQ rights. Honesty, I received plenty of hate mail too, but that only proved to me that I was doing something impor tant. How did Bridegroom happen? Shor tly after the YouTube video went viral, writer/director and creator of Designing Women, Linda Bloodwor th-Thomason, approached me. She convinced me that my story needed to be told. Linda and I both felt that this film should be kind of ‘the people’s’ film. We launched a Kickstar ter campaign and ultimately Bridegroom became the most funded project in the history of crowd funding. You reached out to Tom’s family when making Bridegroom but they chose not to participate… I truly wish Tom’s family the best and have always respected their right to privately grieve for their son, in spite of the pain it cost me. A few members of his family have reached out offering their suppor t and acceptance. Recently his niece mentioned me on Twitter. It’s so hear t-warming to know that some of Tom’s family acknowledge the man that he was, not the man they felt he should be. How did you feel when Oprah came on board? I’ve always been inspired by Oprah, so to have her take an interest in my story was an honor beyond description.

“It was only 50 years ago that interracial couples couldn’t get married. Progress is slow but we have to keep plugging away.”

23

It’s a joy to see the footage of you and Tom I’m incredibly lucky that Tom and I filmed so much of our time together. Without the videos and the ability to share them via social media, none of this – Bridegroom in par ticular – would have been possible. The power of social media is incredible, especially when it’s used in a positive way. How can we achieve equal rights? The Gay Rights Movement is our modern Civil Rights Movement. People are being fired and denied housing because they’re gay. Others are prevented from visiting their sick spouse in hospital because they happen to be the same gender. Gay men are even prohibited from donating blood. It was only 50 years ago that interracial couples couldn’t get married. Progress is slow but we have to keep plugging away, campaigning in every city, state, and country that has laws against homosexuality, transsexuality, same-sex marriage, etc. until equality is universal. It could take decades, but I’m willing to give it my all so long as I’m alive. At the end of it all, we are one race – the human race – and we should help and love one another without prejudice. What did Tom’s love teach you? Tom was so intelligent, compassionate, and funny – everyone loved him. He challenged me to be a better person and tried to convince me that I was wor thy of love. Tom constantly reminded me, even after he died, that my voice can be just as loud as everyone else’s, that my story is just as impor tant, and that my life matters. I had always been so ashamed to be gay, even while Tom and I were together, and yet his death gave me the strength to stop hiding. Tom taught me that life is shor t, but life is sweet, and I have to make the most of it while I can. What is next for you? I’m not positive that I will continue producing films, but I will keep sharing my story in every way possible if it helps to educate people. I hope others will eventually have the legal protection that Tom and I did not. I can be a face for the struggle, a voice for those screaming for equal rights. I owe it to all of the Shanes and Toms of the world to stand up for equality.

We haven’t seen much of you lately. What have you been doing? I’ve been in hiding! No, honestly just living/enjoying life and growing up. To be in this industry you have to have a huge passion for it – I’d lost that a bit so needed to find it again. I’ve been writing A LOT and recording my new album. Gearing up for my single release on February 21st and my mini tour Your father is Zambian and your mother is Irish. Do you identify more with one of these cultures? Being born and growing up in Ireland I identify with that more but I’m equally proud to be both. Looking forward to visiting Zambia again to spend more time

GNITALKS TO...

with my family there. You are based in L.A. Do you love it? Completely love it. Beautiful weather and quality of life. There’s no place like home though. What I wouldn’t give for a pair of ruby slippers at times. We’ve heard about your new film project ‘Home’… As a solo ar tist, one of the joys of working on film is getting to interact with several different people. I can’t say too much about Home yet. It was lots of fun! Your husband is a police officer in L.A. Do you worry about him? He’s incredible at what he does. Of course I’d prefer that he didn’t have to wear a bulletproof vest just to go to work but I suppor t him 100%. Describe what you’d do on a typical night in. Wine/Movies/Husband. In that order! What’s your new single, ‘Only Just Begun’ about? The idea is that if anyone could have their 5 year old self in front of them what would they say to them? What promises would they make? Advice would they give? If any. How much has the music industry changed? Since I was out, A LOT. Twitter/Instagram etc didn’t exist. I love having that direct contact and relationship with people. Has your music style changed? Sure. My new single is one last ode to my pop side. The other stuff I’m recording is much more grown. You’re playing in the Kremlin on 22nd February. It’ll be a brilliant night! What are your memories of Belfast? I absolutely cannot wait!!! Belfast is always such an incredible crowd. Going to be a fab night. I’m delighted Belfast will be my last stop. It’ll be a highlight for me. You look as beautiful as ever. Any tips? Stay away from the sunbeds!!! lol… St.Tropez is a prettier colour anyway. Hopes for 2014? Health and Happiness and Adventures. Thanks so much for talking to us. Love you xx

“My new single is one last ode to my pop side. Most of the other stuff I’m recording now is much more grown.”

For this, I present to you a trend I like to refer to as ‘Dapper Romance’. A simple black suit creates a strong silhouette from top to bottom. Add a touch of luxury with statement accessories: a floral print bow-tie; a pair of aristocratic, gold collar cuffs; a futuristic, gold belt of the Dior Homme variety; or a red rose tie-pin. All of these are perfect for pushing a minimal menswear look to new, catwalk inspired heights of grandeur and cutting edge style. 18th century inspired fashion and romanticism is enjoying a modern revival sure to fascinate those longing...

1940s HAIR I’m sure we’re all suffering from a touch of the winter blues after the run up to Christmas - a slew of late nights and a tipple too many - I know I definitely need a pick me up! Nothing quite puts a spring in my step like a new haircut...

‘So what shall I do with my hair?’ I hear you ask. Never fear, there’s a new trend that has popped up over the last few weeks and it looks set to stick around through Spring/ Summer 2014. 1940’s style hair. Now, I don’t mean you need to run out and get the grease and slick it on, but there are some great variations of this style currently hitting the runways and fashion mags. Nip to your local hairdresser with a few pics in hand. Keep the sides nice and neat with some length on top, and you’ll be leaving like a dapper gentleman in no time! And girls, if you’re feeling brave, why not go for the chop, like everyone’s number one girl crush, Jennifer Lawrence, seen here rocking her pixie crop in a 1940’s style. Right then, I’ll see ya at the hairdressers! I’ll be the one with the rollers in! Rebbecca Bryson MUA

CONLETH RECOMMENDS My Movie of the Month: BRIDEGROOM Last year I watched the YouTube video ‘It Could Happen To You’, created by a young gay American man called Shane Bitney Crone. It shows how he lost the love of his life, Tom Bridegroom, and due to not being ‘family’, Shane was banned from attending the funeral by Tom’s family. The YouTube video went viral in a matter of days,

GNIREVIEWS and resulted in ‘Bridegroom’, a beautifully crafted film that celebrates love in its truest form. I’ve never smiled so much watching a film, nor have I cried so much either. This film is a must-see for both a gay and straight audience. Available on Amazon and Netflix.

I’m currently loving: BRITNEY JEAN Britney Spears (RCA) The Pop Diva recently released her 8th studio album ‘Britney Jean’. The album opens with a great mid-

tempo track ‘Alien’ produced by ‘Ray of Light’ maestro ‘William Orbit’. Dance floor anthems include ‘Work Bitch’ and ‘Till It’s Gone’ and her vulnerable vocals can be heard on the ballad ‘Perfume’. ‘Brightest Morning Star’ and

“I’ve never smiled so much watching a film, nor have I cried so much either.” ‘Now That I Found You’ are standout tracks! Go see: WILLIAM CAULFIELD - The Them and Me Tour (Grand Opera House March 2nd) My dear friend William

Caulfield (best known for his BBC NI Series ‘Our William’) is back with his new show! I called him to chat about it: “It’s a mix of stand up and sketches. The first half is me telling jokes and taking my own look our lives. It’s very diverse - there’s something for everyone. This year I thought it would be good fun to get a member of the audience to join me in a sketch!” Go see it and tweet me your thoughts! Sounds like great fun!

PARTNERS In every issue we introduce you to a loved up couple who tell us what makes their relationship great. Meet Kelly and Kiss!

Kelly and Kiss, both from Belfast, live together in Lisburn with their two little boys (Egyptian Sphinx cats). The couple met when Kiss gave Kelly a tattoo. They were instantly attracted to one another and decided to see each other again… that was 3 years ago! Kiss and Kelly had their civil par tnership ceremony in May 2011. Their reception was held in Union Street bar in Belfast. As best friends, they do everything together and always have fun. Kiss: I once asked Kelly could I paint her and put her above the fireplace… she asked how long it would take as she didn’t know how long she could

stand up on the fireplace! Kelly: We were in LA at an LGBT event. Kiss was chatting with an older lady and asked ‘are you staying here tonight or are you here for the event?’

“The couple met when Kiss gave Kelly a tattoo.” The lady looked shocked and left. A gentleman then star ted talking to Kiss, she asked him the same question and he laughed - apparently that’s the line the high end hookers use when looking for a ‘client’!

GNIDATING It’s 2014 and as usual I’ve spent Christmas indulging in my favourite romantic comedy ‘The Holiday’. After watching a romantic comedy you’re filled with delusion you think for one moment that you too might get a knock on the door and Jude Law will sweep off your feet… get a grip! Consider me your reality anchor; the only way you’re going to get instantaneously swept off your feet is if you hang around outside the Alber t Clock after 12pm and chances are it isn’t Jude Law pulling up in that family estate. It’s time to put down that Cookie Dough ice cream and stop perpetually grumbling to your fag hag…’when am I going to meet Mr Right, why can’t life be like the movies?’ Your fag hag is like your Mum - she tells you what you want to hear “Babe there’s

someone made for everyone.” Awh, bless. Face the facts: when the universe exploded it cooled sufficiently enough to allow energy to be conver ted into various subatomic par ticles including protons, neutrons, and electrons. It DID NOT at any point make someone for everyone. Your

“Your Fag Hag is a LIAR.” Fag Hag is a liar. Let me share some tips that will help pull your head out of the clouds and hopefully land you with the man of your dreams… or rather the man you settled for because life isn’t a movie. The three Bes: 1. Be Realistic. Love isn’t 100 % perfect. Sometimes

you need to think ‘this guy has most of what I need and over time I could learn to love those little imperfections.’ Perfection is fake and imperfections are real. 2. Be Yourself. There’s nothing worse than the date that fakes a persona. Why do we fluff up our personalities with something we think is appealing? It’s like ‘fake’ is on-trend. If someone doesn’t like you for who you are then stay single and keep trying. 3. Be Humble. Being humble is about recognizing that you don’t have all the answers, that you’re not the most talented, sor ted or sane individual out there. Showing that you have some faults and being honest about it is appealing. Leave your ego at home. Good luck, day dream believers. You’ll need it!

GNICOMINGOUT In June 2004, I went home to Co. Cork to come out. I was twenty five years old. I had told a lesbian friend that I would come out to my parents at the same age she was. That gave me a deadline. My time was up. I was living in Edinburgh at the time and I stopped off in Dublin to visit a lesbian friend for some moral suppor t. I bought a book that I could leave with my parents afterwards. I was terrified. I don’t know what I was afraid of. This was it though and there was no backing out. I went grocery shopping with my mother and when we came back I made us a cup of coffee. We sat down. “I’ve something to tell you Mam, I’m gay”. I told my dad later that same day. They were both fine. They were shocked but the world didn’t end. After telling my mother I went outside and sent a text to a

friend in Scotland. All it said was “I did it”. She told me later that year that she read that same text just before coming out to her mother. I brought my boyfriend home that Christmas. This year

“Coming out felt like taking the first step to living my own life. we had our tenth Christmas together. We spent it with my family and then went to visit his in England. I had been out to myself since the end of Uni in 1999 when I was twenty. Exams were over and there was nothing to busy myself with. Friends had

moved on and there was no one to hide from anymore. I first admitted to myself that I was gay after watching the movie ‘Get Real’ on my own. I cried. It felt like I had finally stopped walking away from myself, hoping that the reality of me wouldn’t catch up. I don’t know why. I’ve never experienced any homophobic abuse but no one in my secondary school was out. I remember being afraid that I might be gay all through school. I was forever checking myself for tell-tale signs just in case someone might think I was different. After coming out to myself I came out to all my close friends and socially it wasn’t a secret. But I didn’t go home much. I distanced myself from my family. When I came out to my parents it felt like I could finally star t to live. Up until that point I felt I was still a child. Coming out felt like

taking the first big step to living my own life. I have come to realise too that coming out never ends. Any time I star t a new course or a new job, I’m always aware of not being out at first and how awkward it feels. I’m always aware of the moment when I mention ‘boyfriend’. I’m coming to realise that the closet isn’t just about sexuality. We can be in the closet about any aspect of our lives. Coming out about our sexuality is only one par t of the story. Now, almost ten years on from first coming out to my parents, I know guys my own age and older who aren’t out and I wonder “how can you bear it? Live your life”.

SERIOUSLY THO Colin Flinn, Hon. Secretary of Belfast based Out & About (NI) walking club writes...

We are a rather unique group which walks every other week, has occasional nights out and weekend trips for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community and their friends. Over the past 12 years, we have provided an extra dimension to the lives of those who enjoy the outdoor life. Every September our committee sits down to plan the following year’s programme. In doing so, they have to bear in mind the range of fitness and abilities of our walkers. We take into consideration the success of past walks, daylight hours and the seasons; the shorter walks are during the late autumn and winter, suiting those who don’t want to sweat it out on the hills, but prefer an easier pace. New walks are added every year. Our walks are graded easy,

moderate or challenging. The spring and summer walks are on higher ground, especially in the Mournes which are so accessible to our base in Belfast, in the Sperrins and from time to

GNICOLIN FLINN was curtailed by forecasts of high winds over one of the potentially roughest crossings in the Irish Sea so we had to leave a little bit earlier than planned! The weekends don’t appear on the programme, but grow out of a burning desire to visit somewhere new, well away from our usual trodden paths, with a heady mixture of walking and socialising. By the end of the weekend, members feel regret at having to part company. Just in case your readers think this is all sweat and no rest, it certainly is not! We go out for the whole day taking food in our rucksacks for the lunch break with plenty of time to enjoy the craic; when the walk is over, we will have already identified a pub to visit for drinks and sometimes a snack before returning home. I call these our

“clubhouses”, places to chat, relax, renew acquaintances and make new friends. There are always new people joining us, some from overseas, some on holiday visiting their families here. Long term friends and even relationships have developed out of people waking with us. Four times a year, our southern counterpart club, Out&About (Ireland), based in Dublin joins us for walks in the Mournes and the Cooleys. There could be up to 40 people on the mountains. We also do our thing for Pride with an easy walk along the Lagan Valley or on Cave Hill. On these occasions lunch is a picnic; I should mention that there are often surprises, such as cookies and cakes suddenly appearing out of people’s bags to share among the company. Then there are the regular

dinners, three planned for this year, Autumn, Winter and Spring/ Summer: very informal with no speeches followed by a drinks in a...

Interior designer Lee Austin returns from Maison et Objet in Paris and tells us all about it...

GNICOMEDY

Jordan & Diona’s Top Tips for Treating Your Guy

It’s the 21st century and Valentines Day isn’t just about the ladies. It’s time to treat our men and treat em’ good. Here’s a guide to treating the hunk of beef in your life to a Valentine’s Day they’ll never forget: 1. Homemade aftershavefind all the things you like the smell of and add some boiling water, stick it in a RiverRock bottle and Boom! Your man smells like a delicious nutella, fairy liquid apple pie. 2. Rose petals, shmose petals. Rip the grass up out of your garden and sprinkle it all the way up the stairs to destination Heaven! Then lie on the bed with a few docking leaves covering all the

essentials to retain an air of mystery - for now! 3. Home-made card! Get a few of your man’s favourite pictures from Facebook, like him throwing up on himself at the staff do, his dodgy haircut at Uni and his mum bathing him in the sink when he was two. Then make a collage and stick them onto the front of his favourite cereal box. How romantic! 4. If you fancy heading out, avoid the bars. They’re always packed with smelly single people. How about you and your man take a trip down memory lane. Bring him to the place where you first met and then star t a fight because you remember that

he wasn’t actually there to meet up with you that night but rather your slimmer, more outgoing mate. He’s on the sofa tonight! 5. Finally, if he manages to make up for the domestic, a night of passion might be the cherry on top. How about a self-recorded mixed CD to create a romantic atmosphere. Okay, sure you haven’t taken a singing lesson in your life and Simon told you he’d rather watch kittens drown than listen to you singing that time you auditioned for X Factor, but YOU know your man has always loved your voice, despite his teasing. Bless!

GEMMA HUTTON RANTS

GNICOMEDY January is always an odd month, but a great one for me. I love sitting back and watching people listing their New Year’s resolutions on FB: “I’m putting it out there so I HAVE to stick to this... I’m star ting the gym and making a new me.” Cue 38 comments of motivation and pride..... Cue 2, maybe 3 weeks of #gym #earlymorningswim #yummysalads. And then all of a sudden.....silence. There are only funny pictures shared, but no status. Then you see it: “f*ck it I’m still me and I want a kebab.” I gave up on New Year’s resolutions years ago as I have the willpower of a fat kid in a chocolate shop....literally. KFC is my crack cocaine and I don’t even deny it anymore. Apar t from hosting the Kaz Hawkins show for the Nashville Festival, my first major gig this year is ‘Stand up For Choice.’ I have the honour of MCing top

comedians such as Robin Ince, Bridget Christie, Mark Thomas and Josie Long. The reason for the gig is to highlight and suppor t the rights of women who are pro-choice for abor tion. It’s something I feel strongly

“I just had to spellcheck the word political I know so little about it.” about and am happy to put my name to. The only thing I’m concerned about is the fact that the rest of the comedians are regulars on TV panel shows and radio, and are very outspoken about their political views… I just had to spellcheck the word political I know so little

about it. I’ve tried reading the newspaper and looking at online blogs and forums but it’s no use. If they’re meeting at Stormont.... I think... oh I loved the Stormont Hotel... food was amazing... and I end up booking Sunday carvery and popping out for some munchies. That’s how my brain works when it comes to politics. So, as a modern woman fighting for female equality, I choose to wear a low cut top and have a preperformance vodka. Because as with all true Nor thern Irish people, when I have drink in me I suddenly know how to fix Stormont, and indeed the country!
