Perm branch closure Lambton PO
The closure of the Newcastle Permanent branch in Elder Street Lambton in March was met with a strong response in state parliament from Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery. In a Private Members Statement on 13 March Ms Hornery said: “I think it’s short sighted of the Perm to leave Lambton. Elder Street is one of the busier local shopping strips around Newcastle and it’s a real shame to think our locally grown building society will be walking away.” “Elderly, disabled and lowerincome people who do their banking with the Newcastle Permanent Building Society— people who may not have the mobility to get to other

branches, or the capacity to make use of internet banking services—are being negatively impacted by these closures” Ms Hornery added. Australia Post was caught unawares when the operators of Lambton’s Newsagency and Licensed Post Office ceased trading in February. The former operators were also Licensees for Australia Post at Georgetown, which has ceased trading too. No firm details are available at the time of printing but it is understood that a potential new operator of the Lambton business is ready to begin trading when legal matters pertaining to the business/premises can be finalised. In the interim, post office facilities are available at New Lambton Licensed Post Office in Regent Street and daily newspapers are available from Lambton Grocer in Elder Street.

Dear Lambton & New Lambton Local
Westpac New Lambton responds
Our Editorial comment in the March issue, posing the question of whether Westpac New Lambton would be the next bank to close its local branch, has brought the following response: Dear Lambton & New Lambton Local, Westpac is committed to providing high quality banking services to New Lambton and we want to assure the community we intend to do this for many years to come. In the past 12 months alone we’ve invested over $250,000 upgrading our New Lambton branch, including refurbishments
and technology improvements to give the community better access to financial services. We also installed a 24/7 ATM that takes cash deposits and offers cardless cash. The branch is also now utilising video conferencing technology that connects customers to home finance managers or financial planners, and small businesses to business bankers. We’re incredibly proud of the grants our Westpac Foundation has provided to the local area. In the last 12 months we have granted $30,000 to a variety of worthy community groups. We encourage community groups to apply for the new grants program - applications open on 1 May 2018.
We encourage locals to pop in to our New Lambton branch to say hello and talk to us about their financial needs. We’re here to help. We look forward to seeing you soon. Kaylee Mathew Westpac Branch Manager, New Lambton.

Happy 25th John Hunter Kids Club For the last 25 years, a committed group of volunteers have braved rain, hail and shine to assist ill children and their families, raising $3 million along the way. The John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club celebrated its silver anniversary in March, acknowledging those who dedicated themselves to the organisation’s success, including founding president Frank Rigby, who still serves in the role today. “It’s been a long trip, a big trip,” Mr Rigby said. “But I don’t think there hasn’t been a medical request that we haven’t fulfilled.” In the previous financial year alone that has included an $18,000 sleep machine, a $3000 blood pressure monitor and, with the assistance of a Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation grant, $146,000 of webcams to connect families with their babies in the NICU. Founded as the Kookaburra Kids Club in 1993 when the children’s ward was part of the main hospital, the club has kept up with the growth of the hospital,
which experienced 13,000 admissions last year with an average stay of 1.3 days, and 200,000 nonadmission or clinic presentations. 410 children also had a stay in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. “What Kid’s Club do is at the cutting edge,” Trish Davidson, the health district’s Children, Young People and Families executive director said. “When you partner with people you actually get the outcomes you want. Our community binds us together.”

Rally says:“Fix our buses”
The fight to reinstate former Newcastle bus routes continues, with hundreds of people attending a rally in Gregson Park, Hamilton in March. The rally follows on from a tense community meeting in Belmont in February, where over 1000 people turned out to raise their frustrations with the new routes, which were introduced in January. As well as community members and union representatives, the rally attracted several Labor MPs including Shadow Transport Minister Jodi McKay, who told the crowd that the opposition would not give up. “We want to see public transport fixed in Newcastle,” she said. “I encourage you to keep up the pressure. “Do not let up, do not give up, because we want to see a full, comprehensive, detailed, thorough review of this timetable.” Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery spoke at the rally saying “Every day I hear horror stories about buses failing to turn up, leaving students stranded at schools, people late for work or missing their medical appointments.
“We have a Minister [Andrew Constance] who continues to show complete disregard for the community, who are hurting because of these changes. He needs to fix Newcastle buses.” Ms Hornery added. Opal Card data for February shows a 2% decrease in patronage across the Newcastle bus network compared to last year. A 20,000 signature petition has been tabled with the NSW Parliament, with the issue to be debated on April 12. Photo: Adam Waugh

That was then, this is now
New Lambton Council Aldermen Eighty years ago in 1938, eleven suburban councils merged to form the City of Greater Newcastle council. New Lambton Council was incorporated on 9 January 1889, and a ballot to elect nine aldermen was held on 2 March 1889. The first Council meeting was held five days later in Sneddon’s Hall, and Thomas Croudace, the mine manager of the Lambton Colliery, was elected as the first Mayor. Croudace had previously served as alderman and Mayor of Lambton Council. His municipal enthusiasm seemed to know no bounds, for in 1891 and 1892 Croudace was simultaneously an alderman on both Lambton and New Lambton councils, as well as Mayor of New Lambton.
Unlike Lambton’s troubled financial history, New Lambton Council was conservative with its spending, but was not completely untouched by controversy. In 1916 there was quite a stir when the Town Clerk, William Danne, was discovered to have fraudulently altered council cheques to his own name. He was arrested, tried and sentenced to four months prison. Over the years New Lambton Council had 83 different aldermen, ten of whom served a decade or more. At the other extreme is John Leyshon, who in 1894 resigned from office just 15 days after being elected. A total of 27 aldermen held the position of Mayor, and a number

of streets in New Lambton are named in their honour, including Croudace, Dunkley, Errington and Longworth. Of particular note is George Errington, who was elected Mayor on seven occasions in his 26 years on New Lambton Council. Errington was born in Durham, England, in 1863, and arrived in New Lambton in 1880 to work as a miner. He was first elected to council in 1891 and finished his last term in 1920. George Errington died in 1934 at his daughter’s Mayfield residence Iberia, named after the steamship that had brought George to Australia 54 years earlier. AGE Matters with Joseph McCarthy CEO of NovaCare Community Services
Living and cycling without age
“Life isn’t over when you turn a certain birthday. Life unfolds at all ages, young and old, and can be thrilling, fun, sad, beautiful and meaningful,” says Cycling without Age (CWA) co-founder Ole Kassow, who began this global movement in 2012 from Denmark. Ole wanted to connect with the elderly in his Copenhagen community by getting them back on their bicycles. He hired a trishaw and started offering free bike rides with a dream that everyone has a right to experience
the “wind in their hair”. The Guiding Principles of CWA includes Generosity, Slowness, Storytelling, Relationships and Without Age. Without Age is particularly relevant because Cycling Without Age is about people ageing in a positive context – fully aware of the opportunities that lie ahead when interacting in your local community. Cycling without Age is now offered in 38 countries around the world including Australia. Last year two specially designed Trishaws were imported from Denmark and CWA Chapters were established in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. Local lady Margaret loved her first ride this week saying, “It was exhilarating. It made me feel young again with the breeze in my face - I was feeling a bit down and it really lifted me. We were laughing and I said to Ken, that’s made my day!” If you would like to feel the “wind in your hair”, the Trishaws will be at Lambton Park from 10.30am on Wednesday 11th April, as part as part of NSW Seniors Festival. CWA is also calling for volunteer pilots and a Training Course is scheduled for May 2018. If you are interested in being a passenger or a pilot, please contact NovaCare on 1300 363 654.

MONEY
Matters by Chris Stevens CPA Partner at GC Accountants, Lambton
Is an SMSF right for you?
If you’re thinking of setting up a self-managed super fund (SMSF), there are lots of things you need to consider first. That’s why it’s important to understand exactly what’s involved so you can decide whether an SMSF is the best option for your super. Like other superannuation funds, an SMSF is a vehicle specifically designed to help you save for your retirement. But unlike other funds, you’re the one making the investment decisions rather than having someone else take care of it for you. While this puts you firmly in control of your money, it also takes time and specialised knowledge.
Pros and cons First up, to run an SMSF effectively you need to be a savvy investor. Since it’s a long-term commitment, you also have to be willing to manage and administer your fund for years to come. And that means taking on the responsibility to ensure your SMSF stays compliant – or else running the risk of paying penalties. On the plus side, an SMSF can really open up your investment options, with the ability to invest directly in assets like property. You can also buy or sell assets relatively quickly and potentially save on administration fees if your SMSF has a high balance. Depending on your situation, an SMSF may even offer tax advantages. Get the right advice Everyone’s financial circumstances and retirement goals are unique, which means an SMSF might be a better solution for some people than for others. We can talk you through your options and help you choose the right super strategy for your needs. VET Chat
by Dr Fiona Wallace of New Lambton Veterinary Clinic
Winter woes
Winter will be upon us soon and at the clinic we are gearing up for our more senior patients to start arriving and reporting their aches and pains. The harder consultations though, will be the ones where pets steadfastly refuse to report pain, and leave owners unaware of their daily challenges in just getting around the house and yard. It’s sometimes hard to see the symptoms of arthritis in pets, as they creep up so slowly, so this winter be
aware of your older pet, monitor their weight, and feed them either senior food which is enriched with omega 3 fatty acids, or alternatively, a specific arthritis diet. And remember, cats get arthritis too! If you are at all uncertain let us examine your pet and if necessary prescribe several days of antiinflammatory/pain relief medication so that we can monitor the difference in their behaviour on and off the drugs. I know how easy it is to watch an older pet get quieter and quieter, perhaps gain a little weight, maybe not always get up to greet you on your return home, and to put it down to general “old age”. The value of ongoing pain relief for these guys is priceless. Importantly, make sure you keep your pet trim and exercise them regularly. Excess body fat not only increases the weight load on old joints, but also actively produces inflammatory factors that have a whole body impact. We are happy this year to be able to offer various forms of adjunctive care for arthritis, from acupuncture, laser and massage therapy to nutriceuticals, in addition to our more traditional therapies. Which probiotic?
HAVE YOU GOT THE GUT TO BE HEALTHY?
I am often asked, “Which probiotic should I take?” It is not a simple answer as it really depends on each individual and their current circumstances. Please be mindful that probiotics have an amazing therapeutic benefit for many people. But not all people - those on immune-suppressing drugs, undergoing cancer treatment as well as people with certain autoimmune conditions may not benefit. Again, speak to your specialist first before starting probiotics. For all others, I start with a key question: What are you hoping to achieve by taking probiotics? 1. Most say general health. Great, then a medium to high dose multi-strain probiotic is perfect. Say 8-50 billion of at least 8 strains. I also encourage you to look at natural probiotic foods such as kefirs, kombuchas, ● IBS ● SIBO saurkrauts, miso soup, tempeh, apple cider vinegar, ● Intolerance Testing pickles and olives (brine) etc to naturally boost and diversify your microboime. 2. Others will say they have just come off a course of antibiotics and want to replace what has been killed off. Great idea, then go for a high dose (30-50 billion CFU) multi-strain (8-12 strains) probiotic - continue for 30 days following antibiotics. 3. Or maybe you are about to start taking an antibiotic. You can take the probiotic at the same time, just separate the dose by two hours. Research shows that Download my Top 10 Gut Health Tips yes the antibiotic does kill off some of the probiotics but from www.saraknight.com.au or some do survive which is a benefit to the microbiome my Facebook page (@thegutclinic) balance. I also suggest you double the dose - take two a day instead of just the recommended one. Careful though as this can be a recipe for diarrhoea. if so, bring it back to two capsules every other day. Naturopath | Medical Herbalist | Counsellor There is emerging research that shows the individual strains of probiotics have specific benefit in areas Find us at Unit 9/12 Alma Rd, New Lambton such as mood, weight loss, and immunity. As there are more bacteria cells than human cells in our bodies, www.saraknight.com.au harnessing the therapeutic power of the microbiome is truly promising, and not just for gut health.

Do sport? Be sure to restore, recover, reset
With the new season of winter sport ‘kicking-off’ I thought I might say a few words this month about the need for those participating in sporting activities to actively engage in effective recovery between competition and training sessions. There has been an explosion in sports science knowledge, particularly in the last 10 years, yet many sports, clubs and coaches have seemingly turned a blind eye to the welfare of participants through an often relentless pursuit of ‘competition’. It is not unusual for sports participants at all levels to be pressurised by clubs and coaches to
train and compete harder for longer, and more often. It is therefore not hard to understand why more and more sports participants of all ages fall prey to injury, loss of motivation and ultimately fatigue resulting in high drop-rates from sport altogether. There is much evidence to show a need for enhanced ‘intervention strategies’ and on-going support programmes for sports participants. The consensus among sports scientists and medical/health professions with knowledge of competitive sport, is that appropriate programmes would include properly periodised and individualised training programs, maintenance of training logs, periodic mental-health support and assessment, and education, guidance and support with respect to nutrition and appropriate diet for training and playing, creating and maintaining social support ‘groups’, monitoring sleep patterns, and using planned and reactive de-loads from training/ competition. In elite sport there is an increasing use of ‘mind-body therapies’ including yoga, floatation, mindfulness and meditation to aid recovery. My own view is that mind-body therapies should form part of every sport participant’s recovery at all levels, not just elite. We offer all these therapies at Sensom, so why not pop-in and see what we can do to help you. Taking the time once a week to recover, restore and reset will help you get so much more from your sport!

The tenancy laws in each state stipulate how often inspections can be done and how much notice must be given to tenants. Failing to issue correct notice can One of the most important decisions landlords make mean costly penalties. is whether to manage their rental property themselves or enlist the services of a professional property One of the biggest advantages of enlisting a property manager to look after a rental property is peace of manager. mind. While DIY property management may sound easy enough, it can actually be quite complex and there are numerous potential traps. Some of the main reasons for switching to a managing agent are: Uncompensated damage to property, outof-control rent arrears and lack of time to keep up with maintenance and emergency repairs. Another major issue facing landlords is legal implications, as risk management is now an important part of property management. If a landlord is going to do it themselves, they need to have a thorough understanding of the tenancy legislation and paperwork required. As many landlords often develop personal connections with their tenants, they may feel uncomfortable chasing arrears. Property managers, on the other hand, form a relationship with the tenants but a professional relationship which allows them to work unemotionally with the tenant. Here are five traps private landlords should avoid:

PHARMACY
Matters by Brett Plumb Pharmacist at Piggott’s Pharmacy Lambton
How loud is too loud?
National Hearing Awareness Week recently raised awareness of hearing impairment and ways to protect your hearing. The ear is a complex piece of equipment consisting of many parts. The outer ear captures sound waves which are converted into mechanical energy by the ear drum and the tiny muscles and bones in the middle ear. The inner ear changes this mechanical energy into nerve impulses which are then transmitted to the brain. These nerve impulses are the messages we decipher as sound. Semi-circular tubes or canals within the inner ear, acting like a series of spirit levels, and provide us with our sense of balance. It’s not surprising that with such a complicated system things can go wrong. The Hearing Awareness Week website (www.hearingawarenessweek.org.au) has identified a whole host of possible factors which are likely
NLF
to cause damage to the ears – from jackhammers to jet skis, from fruit juicers to formula one racing – and describes the maximum safe exposure time without ear protection. Visit the website to find out ‘how loud is too loud’ with respect to your favourite electrical or music event. In fact, consistent exposure to loud music is the most common cause of hearing loss. It could be a portable music player or a rock concert; in any event, it’s an easily preventable cause. As deafness may not become apparent for some years, treatment is often far too late. ‘Noise destroys – turn down the volume’ is also the message to come from the Australian Tinnitus Association. Tinnitus literally means noise or ringing in the ears, but the constantly annoying sound that many sufferers live with 24 hours a day takes many forms. For a small percentage of the population it can be severe and quite disturbing. There are some other possible aggravating factors for tinnitus. Some medicines – notably some antiinflammatory and anti-depressant medicines – have been identified as potential causes. Caffeine (found in tea, coffee, cola or chocolate) and alcohol may worsen tinnitus in some people. Smoking (which narrows the blood vessels which supply vital oxygen to the ears), can also make tinnitus worse. Tinnitus can often be managed or controlled reasonably well; even so, a cure doesn’t really seem close at hand. However, treatment for some other common ear problems is often much easier, provided the cause can be identified early on.

FITNESS Matters with Ali & Dan Marshall of Corefit Newcastle
Two words that will get results
When it comes to achieving your health and fitness goals, whether it is fitting back into more comfortable clothes, hitting a weight goal, or a new performance goal, the only thing that will lead you to the success of your goal, is taking Action. We grow and improve by taking action. By getting things done! It’s easy to get distracted by other ‘stuff’ going on. However it’s important to try and ignore the “bright shiny objects.”
That journey can challenge us all emotionally. There are ups and downs, and the journey is never as easy as it seems. It doesn’t mean it can’t be fun and rewarding! As you win the internal battles that go on, the physical battles become easier to win. If you want a better body image, or to just simply feel happier within yourself, everything boils down to making better choices, and taking better action. Only when you do this, do you get to enjoy positive results. Then do it over and over again and make it part of who you are and what you do. That’s when being healthy becomes a lifestyle. On the other side of the coin, you have Intent. Intent is good. Goal setting is a mark of positive intent. It helps build motivation and clarity towards something worth achieving. Some of us have the best intentions when it comes to our health. However the best intentions are useless unless you’re prepared to take action. Our goals are the source and power of where all good things happen. It’s not until you add the fuel to those goals by taking action that they begin to become a reality. So remember, while the power of intent is where it all begins… Intent + Action is where the magic truly happens!

MIND
Matters by Dr Stuart Edser
Principal Psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health
Coping strategies
We all know that life can sometimes be tough. There is no-one who just has an easy ride of things all the time. Everybody has to struggle with life’s harder times occasionally. There are challenges from others: family, friends, colleagues, bosses. Challenges from ourselves. Our past or maybe some decisions or actions that were not so wise in hindsight. Life is both wonderful and challenging. Most of the time, things go okay, but occasionally something can happen and we find ourselves struggling. There is nothing unusual about this. More interesting perhaps is what we do when something like this happens. How do we cope? What
typically happens is that we reach out for something to help us cope in difficult times. Psychologists call these coping strategies and we divide them up into two categories that we call adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies. When I’m talking to my clients, I generally call them helpful and unhelpful coping strategies. Let’s take a look at them. Unhelpful coping strategies are things like alcohol, illicit drugs, nicotine, gambling, pornography, risky behaviour, pathological sex, prescription drug abuse, credit card spending, shopping, shop-lifting, uncontrolled eating. While some of these are worse for you than others (in different ways), they all have two things in common. They are all temporary in their effect and they all come at a cost. There is a price to pay. Helpful coping strategies include exercise, deep relaxation, meditation, talking to a friend, laughter, getting organised, asking for help, doing some research, doing things in smaller manageable pieces, getting adequate sleep and eating a nutritious diet. Most of these are free and they tend to last much longer. Best of all, there is no nasty price to pay. There is no sting in the tail. Take a look at your coping strategies and see if they come from the helpful or the unhelpful list.

Tension headaches
Tension headaches are the most common types of headaches that we treat in our clinical practice. The main causes of tension headaches are often postural and/or emotional in nature. The common posture associated with tension headaches is the modern “head-forward and shoulders rolled-forward” posture. The emotional state linked with tension headaches is as the name implies: tense, uptight or stressed. Even though emotional tension can be held anywhere in the body, most individuals seem to carry it in the muscles of the neck and shoulders. When poor posture and/or emotional tension are the culprits of muscular tension in the neck and shoulders,
little painful knots called “trigger points” can develop in these muscles. Trigger points in the muscles of the neck and shoulders can refer pain to different areas of the head when they become activated. Trigger points found in the big muscles at the base of the neck (the Upper Trapezius or ‘Upper Traps’) can cause severe tension headaches on one side of the head and can be accompanied by nausea and neck pain. These headaches are often mistaken for migraines. When the head and neck are held in a sustained head-forward posture, trigger points can develop in the SCM muscles found at the front of the neck. Trigger points in these muscles can result in tension headaches that are felt in the forehead or above the eye. The treatment of tension headaches by one of our acupuncturists may include: • Using acupuncture to release tight or overloaded muscles of the shoulders, neck and head. • Stimulating weak muscles with acupuncture techniques and exercises. • Addressing underlying stress and emotional problems with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. • Correcting poor posture with exercise, taping, and postural awareness techniques.
