Traffic congestion crisis
Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, has called on the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) to make plans to alleviate congestion on the road from Wallsend to Newcastle. “This section of road is heavily congested in peak hour times and motorists are unable to reach 50km/h most of the time. I travel the road numerous times a day from home to my office and to attend meetings and I can feel the frustration motorists have with the congestion.” This follows a reduction in the speed limit in March to address the high volume of traffic accidents on the corridor. However, as the western suburbs grow, congestion is expected to remain an issue for commuters and residents. “Congestion on the Griffiths Road/Newcastle Rd/ Thomas St stretch of road connecting Lambton, Jesmond and Wallsend with Broadmeadow, Hamilton and Newcastle is reaching crisis levels.” “As the western suburbs continue to grow, RMS needs to look at ways of reducing congestion in the
long term. Recent changes to local bus timetables and routes, forcing more people onto the roads, has only exacerbated the problem.” “Upcoming infrastructure projects, including Stage 5 of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass, will help but we need a more comprehensive approach.” “The Government needs to look at the transport mix in the western suburbs of Newcastle.” Ms Hornery said.
