FROM THE DIRECTOR
I am so pleased to share with you the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures! Los Angeles is the global center for moviemaking, and we have long desired (and deserved) a movie museum of this size and scale. We open on September 30, 2021, and we are so eager to welcome visitors from Los Angeles and beyond to what promises to be the world’s premier movie museum. The Academy Museum brings together the unparalleled collection of the Academy—the largest film-related collection in the world—and the expertise of the world’s most accomplished film artists, our Academy Members. Our opening exhibitions and programs tell the celebratory and diverse stories of moviemaking—the technology, artists, history, and social impact—without shying away from the critical and uncomfortable aspects of the industry. These are conversations that are long overdue. Our multi-floor core exhibition, Stories of Cinema, features spectacular galleries devoted to Spike Lee, Bruce Lee, Thelma Schoonmaker, The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, Pedro Almodóvar, and Real Women Have Curves—a seminal Los Angeles movie (and one of my favorites). In addition, Stories of Cinema features dynamic galleries on costume design, production design, sound, visual effects, animation, cinematography, and so much more. Visitors will discover characters and props from hundreds of films, including Jaws; Star Wars; North by Northwest; Black Panther; Alien; The Big Lebowski; Blade Runner; Toy Story; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Mad Max: Fury Road; Dolemite Is My Name, and so many more! In two of our temporary exhibitions, visitors will explore the first
United States retrospective of the peerless Japanese film artist and animator Hayao Miyazaki, and discover a stunning collection of pre-cinematic inventions including magic lanterns and zoetropes. In The Oscars® Experience, visitors can simulate the experience of walking onto the stage at the Dolby Theatre and accepting an Oscar®. And this is just in our galleries! Our two theaters and education studio will present daily screenings, discussions, and public programs. Our Academy Museum Store will offer an unmatched collection of film-related items— including an Amoeba pop-up store featuring film soundtracks, Miyazaki chairs from Modernica, jewelry from costume designer Ruth E. Carter, special Oscars® merchandise, and an exceptional selection of cinema books and catalogues. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is sure to be Los Angeles’s new home for the movies. We cannot wait to see you there when we open on September 30!

ESIGNED BY PRITZKER PRIZE–WINNING architect Renzo Piano, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures occupies a 300,000-square-foot campus on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles, California. In creating the design for the Academy Museum, Piano and his team embraced the idea of contrasts. The museum reflects graceful movement between indoors and outdoors and between the heaviness of steel and concrete and the lightness of glass. The museum comprises two buildings. To the south, the historic Wilshire May Company building, a 250,000-squarefoot Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument built in 1939, has undergone a major restoration and expansion. Renamed the Saban Building in honor of benefactors Cheryl and Haim Saban, this Streamline Moderne landmark in the heart of the Miracle Mile district has been transformed to contain seven stories of ultramodern exhibition and special-event spaces, an intimate art-house-style movie theater, education and conservation studios, Fanny’s—an all-day restaurant and café, and the Academy Museum Store. Connected to the Saban Building via glass bridges to the north, the soaring new 45,000-square-foot glass-and-concrete sphere building houses the large state-of-the-art, 1,000-seat ACADEMYMUSEUM.ORG
David Geffen Theater as well as the fifth-level Dolby Family Terrace—a circular, open-air plaza that extends beneath a custom-cut glass dome to offer sweeping views of the city, including the iconic Hollywood Sign. PRESERVATION OF THE HISTORIC MAY COMPANY BUILDING Heralded upon its completion in 1939 as the western gateway to the Miracle Mile, the May Company building is the city’s grandest remaining example of Streamline Moderne architecture, and was named a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1992. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has long been committed to the restoration of historic buildings in the Los Angeles area, and the May Company building became the Academy’s third historic restoration project when it acquired the building from LACMA in 2012. As part of the adaptive reuse of the building, the Academy worked with international experts to develop and implement a conservation treatment program for rehabilitating the exterior of the building. This included structurally repairing the building’s east, west, and south limestone façades, restoring the four-story gold cylindrical tower, and repairing and rehabilitating historic steel-sash casement windows. 3

S
TO R I E S O F C I N E M A I S the Academy Museum’s multi-floor core exhibition that presents the complex, diverse, and international stories of moviemakers, the works they create, and the impact their art has on the world. It explores narrative and documentary films, both animated and live action, as well as the arts and sciences of moviemaking. While celebratory, the exhibition also seeks to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives about cinema, supporting the museum’s commitment to telling truthful and inclusive stories and to being a home for discourse and discovery. Like the medium itself, this exhibition will change over time, showcasing different movies, artists, eras, genres, and technologies, illuminating the many histories of cinema as told through a wide variety of experiences and perspectives. Stories of Cinema includes galleries developed in collaboration with Academy Award®–winning writerdirectors Spike Lee and Pedro Almodóvar, Academy Award®–winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, and Academy Award®–winning sound designer Ben Burtt. These moments help visitors gain insight into the work, passions, and influences of these
remarkable movie artists. Other galleries are devoted to seminal films like Citizen Kane and Real Women Have Curves, and cinematic artists including actor and martial artist Bruce Lee, editor Thelma Schoonmaker, cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, writer-director-producer Oscar Micheaux, costume designer Mary Zophres, and more. There are galleries that explore visual effects, animation, production design, costume design, cinematography, hair and makeup artistry, art direction, and the social impact of cinema. And, of course, there are two galleries devoted to the history and power of the Oscars®. In Stories of Cinema, visitors are surrounded by moving images, sound, props, costumes, scripts, posters, production and costume design drawings, matte paintings, photographs, backdrops, animation cels, puppets, maquettes, and more. Visitors will see characters and props from Star Wars, Alien, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Rocketman, The Big Lebowski, Dolemite Is My Name, Crazy Rich Asians, Frida, Blue Velvet, Black Panther, Mad Max: Fury Road, Blade Runner, The Wiz, To Kill a Mockingbird, Avatar, Psycho, and so much more.
SPIKE LEE Adopting the approach that there is no single narrative encompassing the development of cinema, Stories of Cinema showcases multiple stories about moviemaking from a variety of voices and perspectives, and includes galleries developed in collaboration with Academy Award®–winning writer-directors Spike Lee and Pedro Almodóvar. THE EXHIBITION EXPERIENCE All three floors of Stories of Cinema surround visitors with moving images, sound, props, costumes, scripts, posters, production and costume design drawings, matte paintings, photographs, backdrops, and more. 5

T ’ S O N LY F I T T I N G T H AT T H E R E S TAU R A N T A N D C A F É AT the Academy Museum has deep roots in the movie industry. It’s named Fanny’s, for Fanny Brice—the legendary performer portrayed by Barbra Streisand in her Oscar®-winning role in Funny Girl—and it’s being supported by a donation from Wendy Stark, Fanny’s granddaughter and the daughter of the film’s producer, Ray Stark. Ray has a special place in the Academy’s history: In 1979 he was presented with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Fanny’s is the creation of restaurateur Bill Chait (Tartine, Otium, Republique, Bestia) in partnership with Wolfgang Puck Catering, which also oversees food services at the museum. Puck, of course, is something of a Hollywood legend himself. He has been catering the Governors Ball, which follows the Academy Awards®, for the last 25 years. Theatrical as any film set, Fanny’s spans 10,000 square feet over two stories. Design elements, including an Art Deco–style bar and lounge area, curved booths, and wood paneling, take inspiration from studio backlots and classic celebrity gathering spots like the Brown Derby and Perino’s. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with brunch on weekends, Fanny’s also has a market section with prepared foods. A mix of small group and communal tables is designed to encourage interaction. Diners will likely find themselves chatting across tables about the current exhibitions and whose likenesses they spot in the spectacular wraparound mural in the main dining room. Created by Los Angeles artist and illustrator Konstantin Kakanias, the mural features film and music stars from old Hollywood to the present day.
