Since 1936, Bowers Museum has been what Dr. Seán O’Harrow calls a “cultural archive for Orange County

Bowers Museum is a major keystone for that landscape and I’m honored to be part of it,” related O’Harrow, who serves as the museum’s president and CEO.
As the oldest museum in the county, Bowers is dedicated to showcasing cultures from around the world with rotating exhibitions that allow guests to “connect, learn and make new memories.” With the institution’s current featured exhibit, Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form (running through Sept. 8), guests have the opportunity to discover the careers of acclaimed creators including Osamu Tezuka, Zao Dao, Morel, Hur Young Man, and Lat, as well as innovative but unsung artists like Abhishek Singh and Miki Yamamoto.
“[Visitors] also experience firsthand the dynamic ways that their work influenced cinema, animation, fashion, visual art, music and videogames, and [have a chance to] get creative in the accompanying makerspace that’s fun for all ages,” O’Harrow said.
This fall will see more unique exhibitions come to Bowers, such as The Eternal Garden: Titanium Art by Aka Chen, debuting Nov. 16. The External Garden will feature 20 sculptures that “combine the intricacies of contemporary jewelry with fluid compositions of brush paintings.”
“With these masterpieces, the exhibition explores Chinese philosophy, the aesthetic qualities of the Chinese garden, the integration of natural elements and the emblematic use of the garden as a symbol for selfawakening in Chinese artistic tradition,” O’Harrow shared.
The Bowers Museum’s permanent exhibition, meanwhile, focuses on the astounding history of Orange County itself, as well as Southern California and the Pacific Rim at large.
“[We have] over 30,000 objects in our collection including historic newspapers, magazines and other publications, photographs, art and objects relating to the early days of Orange County. Highlights of this collection include more than 300 objects relating to Madame Helena Modjeska and memorabilia and objects from the first police and fire departments of Santa Ana,” O’Harrow remarked.
All year round, Bowers also serves as a touchstone for the community, with free family festivals, school tours, senior workshops and more. It is truly a “Face of Orange County” that helps to, as O’Harrow says, “enrich lives through the world’s finest arts and cultures.” And that includes the county’s culture.
“Bowers Museum is woven into the fabric of OC at every turn,” O’Harrow added.
GHADA AFIFI, MD, FACS
With two Orange County offices, Ghada Afifi truly represents “The Face of Plastic Surgery.”
For over twenty years, Dr. Afifi has been recognized as a double board-certified plastic surgeon whose skillful and artistic facial and body rejuvenation techniques leave patients looking like themselves – only better. Patients come to Dr. Afifi wanting to look as young as they feel, while avoiding that “overdone and over-filled” appearance that is far too common.

“It’s not a one-size-fits-all all kind of thing,” Gabal added. “We figure out what might work best for each patient. There’s a big difference between the needs of someone who is 50 versus 75.”
There is no age limit on sexual health, despite popular misconceptions. The team has even seen patients in their 90s still looking to keep a spark going in their extracurricular activities.
“There’s not an age we are supposed to give up,” Trofimenko related.
Trofimenko said that she most enjoys being able to work with couples.
“When we get a couple who are very much in love and doing well together, but sex is no longer part of their relationship and they both miss it, we provide a safe environment for them to say it,” she shared.
“[And] if it’s important to them, it’s important to us,” Gabal added.

According to Yanni, Orange County is a miracle all on its own. Raised in Los Angeles, and educated at UCLA and UC San Diego, he said he most enjoys the “different beat” of the OC.
“Everybody’s a little bit more zen,” he said. “You’re working during the day, then you get out and go for a walk by the beach or the harbor at night and just enjoy the area. You have different cuisines and cultures. It’s a happy place. This is a happy place. When you live where you vacation, you win.”

2-1-1. It’s a pretty easy number to remember, and Orange County United Way is working to make sure that the entire community has it embedded in the brain. By dialing 2-1-1, residents in need reach a free, 24-hour connection center staffed by caring, experienced, and trained specialists who connect callers to thousands of local health and human services resources.
“2-1-1 is a national program and exists in most communities, including here in Orange County,” said Elizabeth Andrade, the E xecutive Director of 2-1-1 Orange County (211OC). “The need was recognized... to have centralized local hubs of social service information to increase accessibility for people in need. 211OC connects callers to a live person who can link them to available resources in our community that can help satisfy their current need and [help] address the crisis they may be facing.”
The service works with community-based organizations, striving to solve what are often invisible problems in a county known worldwide for its beauty and affluence.
“Orange County from the exterior looks very wealthy and people outside are surprised to hear that there are needs here … There are pockets of poverty that exist within Orange County,” Andrade explained.
Of the 14,000 calls that 211OC receives every month, over half are related to housing needs.
“These are people who are calling us looking for rental assistance [and], emergency housing, and affordable housing. It just goes to highlight the need. So, we offer connection to resources to help support people as quickly as possible with as few barriers as possible.” Andrade related.
Orange County United Way is commemorating a century of community impact this year via its Journey to 100 centennial celebration. Through its key initiatives—United for Student Success SM ,
United for Financial SecuritySM , and United to End Homelessness SM the nonprofit aims to improve lives in Orange County by delivering measurable long-term solutions to complex, local issues in education, financial stability, health and housing.
“[Each initiative] is focused on ensuring that we build a thriving Orange County community where people have the resources they need,” Andrade said. “[We are] building capacity with financial literacy programs, providing students with the support they need to succeed in school and beyond, and making sure people have a place to live.”

AN ATTORNEY’S GUIDE TO A SAFE, PREDICTABLE COMMON SENSE RETIREMENT PLAN
Here’s a simple test to see if you and your family have a retirement plan.
1. Do you have a retirement account, a 401k, an IRA, a 403b, deferred comp or other government plan?
2. Do you know without looking, your balance in that plan?
3. How much income does that produce?
4. Is it guaranteed for life?
5. Is it tax-free?
6. Does it provide $10,000 or more per month in case of Alzheimer’s, dementia, chronic illness, ALS or cancer?
7. Could your balance drop 20% (2022-2023) or 40% (2008-2009) or 50% (2000-2002) or 22% in one day (October 1987)?
If you got questions 1 and 2 right, you have a retirement account. That is not a retirement plan.
If questions 3-7 were, “no”, or “I don’t know” or worse yet, “yes, we could be devastated by market losses and illness”, then you do not have a retirement plan.
