Surprising Things About Huntington Beach We love surfing, but we also love surprises. Here are some of our favorite local gems and accolades that make for a unique experience here in Surf City USA. BY LAUREN LLOYD
1
HUNTINGTON DOG BEACH
All dogs go to heaven, and heaven for dogs in Surf City USA is Huntington Dog Beach. This 1.5-mile pooch paradise along Huntington City Beach spans between Seapoint and Goldenwest streets, where dogs are free to run, play, swim, and even surf. Don’t miss the annual Surf City Surf Dog competition in early fall, and So Cal Corgi Beach Day meetups come spring and fall.

2 BONFIRE BUTLERS Two of our luxury oceanfront resorts offer bonfire packages that make the quintessential Southern California experience effortless. The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, boasts a comprehensive menu of bonfire packages, from several poolside options at its new Driftwood Beach Club to the standard beach adventure. The Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa’s beach bonfire packages include all your bonfire gear, plus pizza delivery from the Hyatt’s Tower 15 Pizzeria. 3 BOLSA CHICA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE Huntington Beach is home to the largest saltwater marsh between the Monterey Bay and the Tijuana River Estuary. Birders flock here to explore the 1,400-acre reserve, where more than 300 bird species have been spotted. Visit the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Interpretive Center off Warner Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, then head out to hike the five miles of trails. Free tours are available on select weekends. A stroll, jog, or cycle along the trails affords visitors sightings of feathered friends like hawks and herons, furry inhabitants including coyotes and rabbits, scaly residents such as snakes and lizards, and marine life like fish, sharks, and rays. Keep your eyes peeled for burrowing owls!

4 SEALEGS AT THE BEACH California’s “first and only” live music venue on the sand entertains right here in Huntington Beach at Bolsa Chica State Beach. An eclectic lineup rocks the salty sea air every summer, paired with the upscale beach concession’s wine, beer, and savory bites. Look for regular weekly beats like country music every Saturday night and Reggae Sundays. 17851 Pacific Coast Hwy., 714.698.4188 5 BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY Here, you want to ride your bicycle. Huntington Beach is recognized by The League of American Bicyclists as a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community, which means that we’re a bikeable community and one of more than 65 in the state of California. Bicycle Friendly Communities welcome bicyclists by providing safe accommodations for bicyclists and encouraging people to bike for transportation and recreation. A paved beach path runs parallel to our 10 miles / 16 km of uninterrupted shoreline, making for a relaxing adventure to explore our beach town.

6 WORLD’S LARGEST SURFBOARD Visit the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum, where you will behold the World’s Largest Surfboard, measuring 42 feet long, 11 feet wide, 16 inches thick, and a whopping 1,300 pounds. The massive board even holds a second Guinness World Record for Most People Riding a Surfboard, which totaled 66 people during the Epic Big Board Ride of 2015. Murals of surfers and surfboard evolution adorn the iconic art deco building’s exterior, and inside you’ll find some of the best surf culture memorabilia in the world. 411 Olive Ave., 714.465.4350

7 OLD WORLD VILLAGE & OKTOBERFEST Settled inside this Bavarian utopia is a mishmash of international eateries and shops—and one of Orange County’s best Oktoberfests, entertaining every September and October. A stroll through the village sees visitors stocking up on traditional German bites at Euro Market, Bakery & Deli, sipping traditional Turkish coffee at The Coffee Tale, relaxing with a cup of Pacific Islands kava at boho-fabulous Mystic Water Kava Bar, enjoying healthy bites at Esther’s Place, learning healthy living at The Living Temple, nibbling on authentic French crêpes and quiche at Crème de la Crêpe, rooting for their favorite Dachshund from the beer garden during monthly Running of the Wieners races, and so much more. 7561 Center Ave., 714.895.8020

8 CRAFT BREWERIES ON TAP
9 NEAT DISTILLERIES Not only does Huntington Beach’s brewery scene call for a toast, but its craft distillery scene has also been wetting whistles in recent years. Surf City Still Works pours handcrafted spirits and cocktails, featuring aptly named libations, flights, and striking bottle labels designed by local artists. Be your poison bourbon, gin, rum, vodka, or whiskey, they make it. 7242 Heil Ave., 714.253.7606 Four Sons Brewing has opened a reservation-only distillery tasting room just steps from their original taproom, pouring a themed, rotating selection of hand-produced spirits—gin, vodka, and whiskey—and craft cocktails on Friday and Saturday nights. New to the neighborhood husbandwife Bonetree Distillery will focus on whiskey and also offer classic white spirit cocktails.
10 OUR VERY OWN AMERICAN GIRL DOLL Surf City USA is always making waves, and 2020 was all about Joss Kendrick, American Girl’s Girl of the Year. Hailing from Huntington Beach, Joss was inspired by 18-year-old surf prodigy Caroline Marks and comes complete with a surfboard, wetsuit, Volkswagen surf bus, and pet bulldog. She’s making a splash for American girls everywhere, notably those with hearing loss. Born partially deaf, Joss helps support and bring awareness to the Hearing Loss Association of America.

THE STRAND
THE STRAND, A BREAK FROM THE BUSTLE BY CHRIS EPTING
If Main Street is about rocking, then The Strand is about chilling. Located just across from the beach and one block north of Main Street in downtown Huntington Beach, The Strand includes a bevy of beach-themed retailers, fun, on-the-go eateries, and the wonderfully “boutiquey” Kimpton Shorebreak Resort. The Strand fronts the ocean, with perfectly framed Catalina Island views, and is the perfect spot for shopping, dining, playing, and staying. Covered parking steps away from the beach (enter on 6th Street between PCH and Walnut).
3 4 • HUNTINGTON BE ACH 2021/2 2
The Strand features some uniquely Huntington Beach touches. The actual street itself is a footprint of the famed Huntington Beach Pier, right down to the pilings that are marked in the roadway. Walking areas are also embedded with seashell material, which adds a whimsical quality to a magical place. The Strand is what every thriving beach city needs; a calm respite from the roar of the ocean and hub of activity that makes both Main Street and Pacific City so popular. Its subtle, elegant artistic touches make it an experience favored by both visitors and locals alike.

PEDAL POWER
WITH PEDALS CIRCLING UNDER YOUR FEET AND THE SUN SHINING OVER YOUR HEAD, YOU CAN GO JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE IN SURF CITY USA BY CHRIS EPTING
@WLOVEFROMBELLA 36 • HUNTINGTON BE ACH 2021/2 2
Since moving to Huntington Beach in 2013, President & CEO of Visit Huntington Beach, Kelly Miller, has fallen in love with road cycling in Surf City USA and throughout Orange County. He had to make the switch from competitive road running to save his body - six knee surgeries and a new hip were his ultimate finish medals after nearly 40 years of marathon road racing. As he pedaled both popular and roads less traveled in the Huntington Beach area, he met so many locals and visitors who, like him, have discovered the SoCal serenity found on two wheels with gears and lycra. In 2017, Kelly decided to sign up for the Tour de France’s amateur version, arguably one of the world’s most challenging athletic endeavors. For two years, he pedaled over 8,000 miles to prepare for the Tour, using his hometown Huntington Beach as his training base. Like so many cyclists of all ages and fitness levels, Kelly found Surf City USA to be one of the world’s best places to hop on a bike, clear your head, and dream big.
HERE ARE KELLY’S INSIDER TIPS AND IDEAS ON HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF CYCLING IN THE AREA Cycling has just absolutely taken off today. Whatever your abilities, whatever your desires, there’s something for everybody in Huntington Beach when it comes to cycling. For me, it breaks down to these three basic categories:
BEACH CRUISING
ELECTRIFYING
There’s nothing easier or more fun than riding a beach cruiser and enjoying the many miles of bike paths that allow you to experience all of Huntington Beach and even over into Sunset Beach. This incredible 10-mile trail hugs the coast the entire way, it’s completely flat, and hey, beach cruising is undoubtedly a huge part of the Huntington Beach culture. (Plus, there are lots of great, super affordable places to rent classic beach cruisers).
The electric bike movement is also gaining a lot of momentum. If you have any ailment or are just trying to get into shape, there is no easier way to go, and electric bikes allow you all of the beach cruising pleasures. It’s just a lot easier on your legs, and of course there are many places to rent electric bikes throughout.
CYCLING If you’re looking for something a little more challenging, road cycling is the way to go. We are talking more advanced, faster bikes with multiple gears, but it certainly lets you see more of Orange County. There are plenty of friendly road cyclists on the road, and dedicated lanes throughout the city, so you will easily know where to cycle.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE AN EXTRA DAY OR TWO MAKES TAKING SOME TIME TO EXPLORE THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH. BY CHRIS EPTING
38 • HUNTINGTON BE ACH 2021/2 2
There are many reasons to plan a vacation in Huntington Beach with plenty to see and do. There are the beautiful, seemingly endless beaches and the convenient proximity to places like Disneyland, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Sometimes, in the precise planning of a vacation, we forget to schedule time to wander and soak up some off-the-beaten-path magic. My suggestion? Build-in an extra day or two to experience and explore the remarkably hidden history of the area. As a local author, journalist, and storyteller, I enjoy giving frequent tours involving the history of Huntington Beach’s Main Street and the nearby Bolsa Chica wetlands. Be sure to visit SurfCityUSA.com/history to download your free historic walking tour guide. When walking, I love being led around by someone (or something)
with a local sensibility. In Huntington Beach, when you look down at the sidewalk on Walnut near Fifth Street and see those metal rings embedded in the sidewalk, you are automatically connected to Huntington Beach from more than 100 years ago. After all, those are original hitching posts where horses would be tied. And what a special connection that is. When you see those mysterious initials, “JEB” emblazoned on so many street corners, you will now know about an enterprising construction worker, James Brunton, whose craftsmanship endures after more than 100 years. It’s just about knowing where to look. Additionally, an extra day or two in Huntington Beach will afford you a chance to wander the wonderfully laid-back sister community of nearby Sunset Beach. Visit Huntington Beach also offers a free historic guide to Sunset Beach.

SURFING
— THE TIMES SQUARE OF —
SURF CULTURE SURF CITY USA THROUGH THE EYES OF A LEGEND, PETER “PT” TOWNEND BY CHRIS EPTING
CANDACE ROCK
4 0 • HUNTINGTON BE ACH 2021/2 2
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Australian-born Peter Townend was considered one of the world’s best surfers. In 1967 at age 15, “PT” as he is affectionately known, started surfing the consistent point breaks of Coolangatta, which included the legendary Kirra, along Australia’s Gold Coast. It wasn’t long before the young Australian bagged a few respectable finishes in the Australian Championships and Queensland Titles and began a serious run into the international pro ratings. In 1976, he became world champion of the first pro surf tour organization, International Professional Surfing Association, founded by Fred Hemmings. Here in Huntington Beach, he’s a local legend, ambassador, and spokesman for the sport he helped create and make internationally popular. So how does he suggest a first-time visitor make the most of a visit to Surf City USA? “Take a surfing lesson, mate!” he laughs. “You’ve got two great shops right by the pier that will take great care of you. You need somebody explaining to you where to paddle out, the easiest way to paddle out and how to catch a wave. Besides getting out to the waves, the next hardest thing is how to catch the waves. With those two things, you need assistance!”
Check out Huntington Beach Surfing Lessons: www.surfcityusa.com/things-to-do/activities/surfing/ surfing-lessons/ PT also stresses that time of day is critical. “The best time is to go out in the morning because the conditions in the water are more manageable. The first thing you think about after catching a good wave is going out and catching another. I’ve heard a lot of people wind up staying a couple of extra days in Huntington Beach because once they’ve been out in the water for a little bit, they get hooked. I got hooked on Huntington Beach back in 1977 while shooting a film here called Big Wednesday. It was love at first surf. It changed my life, and I never went home.” You may be able to spot PT while you visit, around the pier, or out catching a wave. Either way, set up your first lesson and get ready to experience surf culture in all its glory, out in the swells waiting for the perfect wave.

PICKLEBALL
THE PICKLEBALL CRAZE is right at home in Huntington Beach BY CHRIS EPTING
Huntington Beach is lucky to have Diana Abruscato at the helm for all things Pickleball. She is the city’s official ambassador for the sport, teaches Pickleball for the recreation department, and actually had the installation of Pickleball courts entered onto the parks master plan. As founder of Surf City Pickleball, Abruscato also helped get Pickleball lines painted on temporary courts in the city. “Pickleball is so attractive to all ages and skill abilities,” she explains as to why the sport has exploded. “It’s easy on the joints, it’s a great crossover sport; anybody and everybody can play, and Huntington Beach is a great place to experience the sport. Our

courts are free, open to the public and lighted until 10pm. Just contact the City Gym and Pool or they can contact me directly to get situated. We can make sure you get all the gear you need to get out and start playing right away, take a lesson, whatever you need. Pickleball is part of destination travel today. Many people travel with their paddles and I’m glad that the city has made Pickleball such an important amenity in the city.” Huntington Beach is also home to annual Surf City Pickleball tournament in July, the same weekend as the US Open of Surfing, so if visiting then make sure you check out the tourney!

BEACH BONFIRES
The 10-mile paved beach path that hugs the coast along Huntington Beach is a favorite of both locals and visitors alike. It provides a remarkable view of the ocean and also allows another stunning view of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains in the opposite direction. Beach concessionaires renting and selling bicycles, tandem bicycles, electric bicycles, surreys, and more line the route, which offers plenty of places to stop for a bite, picnic, photo op, or bathroom break. Huntington Beach oceanfront resorts provide bike rentals for guests as well.
It is one of the classic California traditions and nobody does it like Huntington Beach. For more than 100 years we have helped turn beach bonfires into an art form. There’s really nothing like it. Salty breezes during the day or night co-mingling with the sweet smell of marshmallows, hotdogs; whatever you like cooked outside over an open fire. Believe it or not, the city boasts more than 500 fire pits, perhaps more than anyplace else in the country. Or even the world. Three out of five of Surf City USA’s distinct beaches house fire pits, including Huntington City Beach, Huntington State Beach, and Bolsa Chica State Beach. Remember to bring your own firewood, blanket, chairs, matches, skewers, and s'mores.
SURFING Huntington Beach’s rich surf culture can be traced back to more than 100 years. With 10-miles of wide-open beaches, a consistent year-round swell, and sunny warm weather, these ideal conditions attract both visitors and residents. Each of our five distinct beaches also beckons a different level of surfer, from the amateur experiencing the rush of a first paddle-out in calm glistening waters to the seasoned shredder soaking up the stoke by the pier.
FISHING Freshwater, saltwater—whatever you like to fish—you’ll find lots of options in Huntington Beach. With 10 miles of uninterrupted shoreline and two freshwater lakes, Huntington Beach makes it easy to get hooked on fishing. You can even fish from the famous Huntington Beach Pier! There are also nearby day trip charters along with whale watching excursions in the vicinity.
THE MAGIC OF HUNTINGTON HARBOUR It’s easy to rent a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and Duffy boats in the open and calm waters of the Huntington Harbour. You will see stunning homes and yachts as you navigate at your own pace through the picturesque view.

around town NORTH HUNTINGTON BEACH Because of its sprawl, Huntington Beach features delicious dining options across a wide 10-mile area. North Huntington Beach boasts lots of local places, from authentic Mexican to big-name chains to more upscale options. Near the intersection of Edinger and Warner, you’ll find a popular vegan restaurant, Japanese BBQ, classic fish tacos, and one of the most popular sub shops in the city; there is diversity on every corner.
SOUTH HUNTINGTON BEACH CAPTAIN JACK’S IN SUNSET BEACH
SUNSET BEACH AND HUNTINGTON HARBOUR If you’re looking for something quieter and off the beaten path, both the Huntington Harbour area and Sunset Beach feature lots of little out-of-the-way spots that deliver plenty of local colors and creative cuisines. Like Captain Jack’s and King Neptune’s in Sunset Beach, all-time favorites are equally balanced with little up-and-coming startups. Golden Road Brewery at Peter’s Landing is an excellent stop for California pub fare and a great view of the idyllic harbour, and Stoney’s Pizza is quite the pizza gem dishing out delicious pizza.
MAMA’S ON 39 IN SOUTH HUNTINGTON BEACH
You never know what gem of a restaurant you might find inside a small shopping center or many more. That’s the magic of South Huntington Beach; so many little places tucked away just waiting for you. Some of the best Mexican, seafood, steaks, Chinese, Japanese, and a host of other ethnic cuisines are in this area. For instance, three out of the four corners at the intersection of Adams Avenue and Magnolia boast some of the most popular restaurants in town. Right by the famous Newland House Museum, you’ll find both Slapfish and Capone’s, which earned the most dedicated customers in Surf City USA.
STACKED IN BELLA TERRA
BELLA TERRA Bella Terra has emerged as a tasteful haven for some of Huntington Beach’s most popular restaurants. Whether it’s an afternoon with the family, a romantic evening out, Bella Terra offers laid-back, coastal-casual eateries. From sushi, burgers, pizza, Mexican, ramen, or dessert, here you will find a variety of restaurants that offer indoor and outdoor seating. And right across the street is the famous Old-World Village, featuring “Old World” European dining including a German Restaurant and Beer Garden and French CREME De La CREPE Restaurant, plus shopping, and entertainment.

JOHNNY’S SALOON & PIZZERIA
EVERY CITY NEEDS AN ULTIMATE DIVE BAR, AND THAT BAR IS HUNTINGTON BEACH JOHNNY’S SALOON BY CHRIS EPTING
This is “Cheers” with an edge, inviting and welcoming while also the coolest joint in town.
t he Saloon
For more than 15 years, a small corner space on Beach Boulevard has reigned supreme as the ultimate dive bar experience for both locals and out of towners. From local politicians to rock stars to everything in between, Johnny’s Saloon has established itself as the must-visit local watering hole. What exactly makes a dive bar a dive bar? Owner/proprietor Johnny Kresimir says it has a lot to do with attitude. “To me, a dive bar has got to be a reflection of the customers. It’s got to be a place where everybody is comfortable, no matter who they are and no matter what they do. When I was a kid, I watched my dad run his dive bar, and he actually had customers that would create some of the art for the walls. So, our place is like that. If someone has an idea, we often say, “go for it.” They have something cool to hang up? Awesome. The interior of our joint is unique not just because it’s fun, mysterious, and very rock ‘n’ roll, but because it really does reflect all of the amazing people to come in and keep us company.” The dimly-lit roadhouse vibe certainly adds to the mystique of the place, and once your eyes make the adjustment, the warmth and spirit of the place is obvious. This is “Cheers” with an edge, inviting and welcoming while also
the coolest joint in town. Johnny’s boasts 200 varieties of whiskey because for Johnny, whiskey is simply part of the American fabric and culture. “Every whiskey has a cool story,” he laughs. And we like good stories in here. We also take our whiskey very seriously. My brother is in charge of the whiskey here, and he is a true connoisseur.” Something else they take seriously is Johnny’s pizza. Recently, Johnny’s opened an off-site pizza kitchen, which has become the talk of the city. The unpublished secret location is responsible for some of the most killer pies in Southern California. Everything is prepared fresh; a vegetable is not chopped until that pizza is ordered, and the dough is handmade with love. They have a limited delivery system throughout the city, but the best way to enjoy one is to head into the bar, order off the menu and wait until it’s delivered to you while you enjoy your drink. There are many great eating and drinking experiences in Huntington Beach. But a shot of whiskey and a homemade pizza at Johnny’s is a pretty tough combo to beat, no matter where you’re from. 714.848.0676, johnnyssalonhb.com

Accessibility has always been an essential component in helping visitors and locals navigate many of the beautiful areas and activities in Surf City USA. Here are some things to enjoy! ROCKY MCKINNON ADAPTIVE SURF PROGRAM What made surfer Rocky McKinnon develop his Adaptive Surfing Program? Volunteerism, he said. “I've been volunteering with organizations like Malibu Boardriders Day at the Beach, Ride-a-Wave. org and the Best Day Foundation where,

I then decided to create my own SUP lesson program and designed a 15 ft. chair board specifically for adaptive surfing. I feel like my purpose is to put smiles on people's faces,
and I find it more rewarding working with people: assessing their desires, needs, and goals and building a program specifically for them." COASTAL CAMPING
Huntington Beach is one of the few coastal tourist destinations to offer city and state RV coastal campgrounds right on the sand. Both locations feature hook-ups, showers, and fire rings. But these aren’t your usual RV parks, cluttered with other RVs. This is picture-perfect postcard camping right along the ocean, with the most stunning sunrises and sunsets.
BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH RV CAMPING “You look out your window every mornings and see Catalina across the blue water and breathe in that great salt-sea air,” says Tom Valdez of South Dakota, who has been RV living at the Bolsa Chica State Beach for more years than he can remember. “Then late in the day you’re grilling dinner in the fire pits and watching the clearest, most beautiful sunset off the sea.” The state campground has 57 spots that stay filled year round. You often need to reserve a spot months in advance to get in. While you can find license plates from almost any state, Valdez, a volunteer host, says, “The majority of our guests live within 15 miles of here. This is their chance to make the beach 76 • HUNTINGTON BE ACH 2021/2 2

restaurants, surf stores, and boutique shops. And directly behind the RVers is the Pacific City retail center, loaded with shopping and family dining. The city’s RV camping runs from October through May. 714.375.8482 sunsetvistacamping. huntingtonbeachca.gov

BEACH SAFETY TIPS The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division’s lifeguards are dedicated to ensuring that Surf City USA’s beaches remain accident-free. Here are safety tips developed by the lifeguards in conjunction with the U.S. Lifesaving Association. For more information, visit USLA.org • Check on conditions. Before entering the water, ask lifeguards about water conditions. • Never swim alone. Use the buddy system so someone will always know where you are. • Swim sober. Alcohol is not allowed on the beaches in California and increases the potential for drowning by lowering body temperature, encouraging risky behavior, and impairing physical ability. • Know your skill level. Don’t overestimate your swimming ability, especially on rough days. Stay ashore if you’re a non-swimmer. • Don’t panic in rip currents. Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current and then swim to the beach. • Swim near staffed lifeguard towers. Our lifeguards are the best. You’ll be much safer if they know where you are. • Stay in designated areas. Portions of the beach are set aside for swimming or surfing. Keep a safe distance from jetties and the Huntington Beach Pier. • Do the stingray shuffle. Shuffle your feet to scare away stingrays. • Extend a hand out. Extend your hand in front of you in shallow breaking water when diving, body surfing, or wiping out on a surfboard. • Don’t dig deep holes. Deep holes can cave in and create hazards for small children. Please refill any holes you dig. • Do not bring glass to the beach. Remember, people walk with bare feet at the beach.

“I love the energy and vibe of Surf City USA. I love the quiet in the morning waves slapping in at sunrise and by 8 AM joggers and dog walkers slowly trickling in. On Saturday mornings you can hear the rev of the classic car engines lining up for a car show. Surfers rushing to put on their wetsuits and racing to catch their first wave. By mid-morning the serious sunbathers and volleyball players set up for the day. This vibe, this energy is the reason I love Huntington Beach.” — Cindy Hecht Sedbrook, a Huntington Beach Resident
