Melrose District Guide (2015)

THE MELROSE DISTRICT GUIDE The Melrose District—the triangle formed by Melrose Place, Melrose Avenue, and La Cienega Boulevard—might just be one of L.A.’s best-kept shopping secrets. The area quietly boasts a multitude of high-end clothiers, jewelers, restaurants, and more, so indulge a little…with big style.

JOIE Flowy silk blouses, shapely sweaters, and other staples mingle with flirty dresses and on-trend jumpsuits at Joie, a brand originally known for its fashionforward cargo pants. The 1,640-square-foot Melrose Avenue space has been designed with

the same chic and clean lines as the clothing you’ll find inside. This is where California casual meets modern Paris, and you’ll agree that the effect is trés awesome. 8414 Melrose Avenue 323-330-1255 joie.com

Once a hotspot for antiquing, the Melrose District still boasts shops with exquisite antiques and hand-crafted furniture like John Nelson Antiques (8478 Melrose Place) and Paul Ferrante (8464 Melrose Place) should you be in the market for bergére chairs or a crystal chandelier.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD The hot pink neon sign scribbled on the plain gray building is merely a wink at Westwood’s wild streak. The British designer’s posh threads have been spotted on music icons like Adam Ant and Pharrell Williams, models like Heidi Klum and Kate Moss, movie stars like Sandra Bullock and Angelina Jolie, and even that überstylish muppet, Miss Piggy. The men’s and women’s clothing lines showcase eclectic, colorful conversation-starters. 8320 Melrose Avenue 323-951-0021 viviennewestwood.com

SUZANNE FELSEN Accomplished jewelry designer Suzanne Felsen opened her first boutique in Santa Monica in 1998, then launched a Melrose outpost in a modern, airy, converted Spanish-style home in 2005. Her stunning one-of-a-kind rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings feature precious gemstones, gold, and silver in unique cuts and bold color combinations. PS: Felsen makes men’s jewelry, too, with cuff links that James Bond would envy. 8332 Melrose Avenue 323-653-5400 suzannefelsen.com

EQUIPMENT

JOE’S JEANS

Originally a menswearinspired line of women’s shirts that quickly gained success in the late 1970s, this French label was revamped to include dresses, jackets, pants, sweaters, accessories, and even pajamas. The slate-gray building belies the mix of fun and funky prints and delicious solid colors found inside. Fabrics like cashmere and Equipment’s signature silk practically beg to be touched.

Straight and narrow? Curvy? Petite? With fits catered to specific body types in a range of shades and styles, this pioneering premium denim brand has been outfitting women, men, and kids in jeans, jackets, and more since 2001, and has engendered a loyal following. The two-year-old West Coast flagship store on Melrose Place, one of only two L.A. locations, is an ivy-covered whitebrick charmer.
