THE MELROSE DISTRICT GUIDE At the center of the Melrose District is luxe, tree-lined Melrose Place, the equally trendy Melrose Avenue adjacent, and a bustling La Cienega Boulevard. Strolling along these modern thoroughfares you’ll find highend clothing boutiques, one-of-a-kind gift stores, restaurants, and unique architecture that you won’t find anywhere else in the city.
SUZANNE FELSEN
JOIE This contemporary clothing brand’s West Coast flagship feels like you are walking into a French salon…with a kick of Cali casual. You are greeted at the door by a sales staff that treats you like an old friend as they help you find the perfect floaty dress and shoes to match. Their motto of “casual, comfortable, and luxurious” emanates from the racks of rompers, skirts, sweaters, and pants. Boho chic accessories polish off the look. 8414 Melrose Avenue 323-330-1255 joie.com
L.A. native Suzanne Felsen’s boutique (set in a converted 1920’s Spanish-style house) is filled with vibrant, impeccably cut gemstones wrapped in one-of-akind 18-karat settings. There are no cookie-cutter styles here: in the women’s collection color diamonds twinkle in white gold while ametrine jets out of diamond pavé and rich yellow gold. Lapis and black diamonds—set in men’s bracelets, necklaces, and wedding rings—are as mysterious as the night sky. 8332 Melrose Avenue 323-653-5400 suzannefelsen.com
GEMINI G.E.L. For fifty years Gemini G.E.L.’s (Graphic Editions Limited) Melrose workshop has been collaborating with artists including John Baldessari, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, and Ed Ruscha to create original, hand-printed lithographs and limited edition sculptures. A walk into the gallery to view the works (open Mon.-Fri.: 9:30-5:30) is definitely a must for any contemporary art fan or someone just starting to collect. Staffers easily offer their expertise to help novices. 8365 Melrose Avenue 323-651-0513 geminigel.com
THEORY The clothing mecca boasts a bright, airy space with soaring ceilings and a mod residential feel. Founder Andrew Rosen has succeeded in his effort to combine a designer aesthetic with comfort in his understated yet unfailingly polished pieces—the go-to modern uniform for the cosmopolitan set. Accessories include urban shoulder bags, ankle boots, and thick bracelets pointed with semiprecious finials. 8428 Melrose Avenue 323-782-0163 theory.com

This light-filled eatery is about passion for the ambiance and flavors from the Riviera and coastal regions of the South of France, Italy, and Spain. Rosemary plants perfume the sweeping dining room while olive oil, the restaurant’s focal ingredient, is paired with each dish and used in place of butter.
