THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF CANCER. OUR FOCUS IS YOURS.

Misagh Karimi, M.D. Gastrointestinal Cancer Specialist

When people with cancer come to Misagh Karimi, M.D., they are consulting with a cancer specialist whose depth of experience is matched by a profound care for people facing the challenges of a complex and lifechanging disease.

“At City of Hope, we have a long tradition of wholeperson care, treating the whole patient, not just the illness.”

“Cancer care is more than research and more than treatment; it’s compassion,” says Dr. Karimi, a medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal cancers and the director of clinical operations at City of Hope Newport Beach Fashion Island. “Every person with cancer has unique needs and goals,” says Dr. Karimi. “City of Hope emphasizes understanding and supporting you in all aspects of the cancer experience. Our promise is to take your hand and never let go.” Dr. Karimi leads a team bringing City of Hope’s level of advanced cancer care closer to home in Newport Beach. He is one of more than 400 City of Hope physicians and 1,000 researchers and scientists focused on only one thing: ending cancer.

THE FUTURE IS HOPE Dr. Karimi sees precision medicine as one of the game changers in cancer care. “We are in a new era of personalized therapy where people with cancer can receive individualized treatment based on the molecular characteristics of their disease.” He also advocates for greater access to preventive care and education, observing that the best way to treat cancer is to stop it before it starts. City of Hope is redefining the delivery of advanced cancer care at its four Orange County locations and at Lennar Foundation Cancer Center at City of Hope Orange County, nearing completion in Irvine, Dr. Karimi says. “With our highly specialized care for each patient’s kind of cancer, nearly 1,000 clinical trials, leading-edge treatment options, and precision prevention and early detection programs, we offer patients and their families unprecedented hope.”

City of Hope’s NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center is opening in Irvine this year, advancing our world-renowned cancer treatment and research. Our highly specialized cancer care is available now, near you. To make an appointment at any of our four Orange County locations, call:

EDITOR’S LETTER

O

ne of the best parts of this job is meeting all kinds of people in Orange County and discovering what they’re passionate about. Cal State Fullerton assistant professor Eric Gonzaba is relatively new to O.C. (2019) and is leading a project called Mapping the Gay Guides, which digitizes the information listed in Bob Damron’s Address Books about gay spaces nationwide going back to 1965. What’s the goal of this project? As a digital historian, you can’t learn without digitizing. When you put all this information in one place, you can look at major trends. We can introduce new questions, rather than answering questions we already had. What’s your favorite aspect of the project? I want the students’ feedback. I made students do a unit about gay history; 99 percent of them had no idea they were living near queer spots. The students are surprised that gay history is all around (them). It’s beaches, restaurants, bowling leagues. I love the element

of surprise in academia. We should go to work and find out something we didn’t know before. I get pleasure (in) teaching them that queer history has never been stuck in the closet. Are there listings for O.C.? We haven’t gotten to Orange County specifically, but California has more entries than any other state in the country by far— thousands of entries. It takes the same amount of time to do (input for) 15 years in California alone as it would to do all the years for 12 confederate states. Is there information that applies to life now? What is the role of gay spaces? That question is happening nationwide. Neighborhoods are changing. This is a fun part of the project. What makes certain neighborhoods gay neighborhoods? These are questions we’re hoping to answer. Where’s your favorite place to hang out here? We love tacos at Pour Vida in Anaheim. And we’re big movie fanatics, so we love the community at The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana. We’re celebrating Pride throughout this issue; meet more fascinating leaders in our LGBTQ community in our story on Page 90.

Cal State Fullerton alumna and Anaheim Hills singer Chelle Denton shows off her vocal prowess this month in Pacific Symphony’s “Blockbuster Broadway!” by Valerie Takahama

D

enton is among six featured vocalists performing hit tunes from Broadway shows such as “Hamilton,” “Wicked,” and “The Lion King” on June 3 and 4 at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. A self-described “soprano belter,” she has appeared in “The Sound of Music” at the La Mirada Theatre, “Something Rotten” with Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, and “Parade” with Anaheimbased 3-D Theatricals. How did you get started?

Ú I’ve been singing since I was

little-little. My dad is a vocalist. He performed barbershop singing in college. And his dad was a choral teacher. So I do come from a musical background, and I’ve had incredible support from my family. I’ve been doing musicals and shows since I was probably 9 or 10. In high school, I decided it was what I wanted to study in college, so I started to go to auditions for college musical theater programs.

Why did you gravitate to musical theater? Ú I’ve always loved singing for people, but the extra passion and joy came from being onstage and being able to portray a character. I am so passionate about storytelling. What I love is the story behind the song and the show. Whatever song I’m doing, I like to find the story and get the audience to join (me) in that story, whether it’s musical theater or a concert format. I know that pop artists try do the same thing. Also, my tone of voice tends to move in more of a theatrical direction, so I stayed in that zone as I was becoming a performer. 24 ORA NGE CO AST • June 2022

Is the highlight to get onstage and perform? Ú I think so. Sometimes it’s also being in a cast of really good performers who are on the same wavelength as you and are just as passionate about storytelling. I think that tends to be a highlight. And working with great directors and music directors. You meet a lot of great people. A lot of my close friends have come from productions I’ve done in the past. It’s exciting to know that you’re in a job where you’re constantly meeting new people. At Cal State Fullerton, were there specific productions that were extremely fulfilling for you? Ú I was able to do “Legally Blonde” when I was a junior. I played Paulette, and that was a dream role for me. She’s a comedic role with a big, belt-y voice. That was so fun. The agents who are representing me now contacted me after that role. I got to end my time at Cal State Fullerton doing “Kiss Me Kate,” and I loved that because I got to play opposite my best friend in college, and I played the role of Kate. It was extremely challenging because

there was Shakespearean language involved, which was hard but pushed me and my performance abilities. Where would you like to go with your career? Ú Like many in the musical theater world, I’d love to be on Broadway. I’ve had the opportunity to audition for a couple of Broadway shows, and that in itself has always been

a dream. Now it’s the goal of getting into one of those shows. Specifically, I’d like to originate a role. I would love for my career to carry me into the TV and film world, which has been happening bit by bit. My most recent work has been national commercials with Pepsi and Ross. Outside of that, I’ve done short films with up-andcoming directors, which has been really cool. photograph by E M I LY J . D AV I S

MEGA N’S STORY

Saved from Living a Life in Constant Pain

Patty Bennet, Megan Hostetler and Ivar E. Roth, DPM/MPH

Paincur™—Amazing New Revolutionary Treatment Ivar E. Roth

DPM/MPH, a podiatrist/ foot & ankle surgeon, has been practicing in Newport Beach, CA for over 35 years. After many years of successful practice, Dr. Roth founded a new breakthrough technique in pain management: Paincur™ Paincur™ is a revolutionary, noninvasive treatment designed to provide long term/ permanent pain relief from conditions such as sciatica, back pain, shoulder/neck pain, arthritis, sports injuries and more. This new and revolutionary treatment has successfully managed to provide lasting relief to those experiencing chronic pain, such as his patient, Megan Hostetler. Megan Hostetler suffered from a rare and painful condition, known as Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome. The pain derived from this condition is so severe that by the age of 21, Megan Hostetler had been hospitalized over 30 times in multiple hospitals, sometimes as long as four months. “The pain was so excruciating, it was heartbreaking to see her in this condition,” recalls Megan’s mom, Patty Bennett. “In high school, Megan had so much going for her. She had a passion for boxing and was training to become a professional boxer. At that point, her life got

derailed with these constant bouts of debilitating stomach pain and extended hospital stays.” Megan’s only relief came from IV administered pain medication. At that point, Megan was then referred to Dr. Roth. “Megan was brought into the examining room supported by her fiancé and her mother, one on each side of her. Megan was writhing in pain. Rarely have I seen a patient in this much excruciating pain,” tells Dr. Roth. When Dr. Roth met Megan; he knew she was a perfect candidate for this treatment. “After her first injection and as the medicine began working, Megan’s pain began to subside. Megan remarkably left the office walking normally and without assistance - without any narcotics or addictive medicine,” says Dr. Roth. Megan could hardly believe how much better she felt. “For the first time in years, I began to feel hopeful,” tells Megan. “I can now do activities that were previously too painful to endure,” says Megan. “I can walk, sit comfortably, and even enjoy my favorite activities like cooking. I once again dream of pursuing my passion as a professional boxer. Dr. Roth’s treatment is a miracle! To me, Dr. Roth is truly a miracle doctor who has given me my active life back as I once knew it.”

INDUSTRY EXPERT Q&A

INSIDE THE MIND OF DESIGN with Adriana and Alex Doberstein

Q What differentiates Pacific Shore Stones in the industry? A Pacific Shore Stones is a leading importer of exotic natural stone,

quartz, and premium surfaces. Established in 2004, we offer granite, marble, travertine, quartzite, onyx, limestone, soapstone, Dolomite, quartz products, and sintered materials. We’ve developed joint ventures with quarries worldwide, built on solid relationships, providing access to the finest blocks. Our owners regularly visit quarries in Brazil, Italy, Spain, India, and Turkey, enabling them to keep up with new trends and purchase unique stones. We also have a dedicated staff to assist our clients– we’re known for our product knowledge and reliable customer service and making the process seamless and easy.

Q What are some key design trends for Summer 2022? A The key design trend for this Summer is maximizing the outdoors as an

extension of the home, making it a multi-functional and seasonal space. Large outdoor kitchens and bars are desired, fully loaded with the latest state-of-the-art appliances and entertainment centers, including fireplaces, fire pits, super-size grills, smart televisions, etc. Natural Stone is the preferred choice of material. Leading the season's look with its warm and creamy feel is the Leathered Taj Mahal Quartzite. Another trend is dark textured tones such as the magnificent Black Vermont Deep Leathered Granite.

Q What new offerings do you have this year? A We have an expansive inventory from basic to exotic natural stones,

but engineered materials such as quartz and porcelain are becoming increasingly popular. In addition to all of the premier quartz brands such as Cambria, Caesarstone, and Silestone, large format ceramic tiles are gaining traction in the design industry. We have an exclusive porcelain line called Pacshore Tech which features designs that mimic natural marbles, including white with grey veining, grey with white veins, and even black with white veins. They are each available in multiple finishes such as matte, leathered, and polished.

Q What makes your Irvine Showroom unique? A Our showroom is clean, cozy, and inviting, and our knowledgeable

customer service team sets us apart. The spacious warehouse/showroom is impressive thanks to its gallery-like style. Finally, the natural stone selection, each unique, beautiful, and distinct, will surpass expectations. It will be our pleasure to assist you with your design project. Please feel free to stop by, say hello and get an espresso!

LESS IS MORE

The online vintage brand celebrated its two-year anniversary last month. by Chelsea Raineri

I

rvine native Aisha Ross started selling vintage clothes on Instagram in 2020. Customers can shop her brand Less Is More online, at local pop-ups, and on Instagram, where Ross posts vintage clothing and accessories for followers to quickly claim and purchase. This Father’s Day, shop her recently launched genderneutral brand The Garden, which carries vintage pieces and Ross’ designs.

What do you look for when selecting pieces for Less Is More?  I gravitate toward neutrals, because I think (they’re) easier to style with your wardrobe, as well as pieces that you can wear every day. I like natural fabrics such as cottons and linens because they’re better quality, better for the environment, and feel and look better on your body. I like a lot of flowy, oversized pieces as well as button-downs because you can style them so many ways. They’re really versatile, in my opinion; you can make it casual and wear it as a beach coverup or dress it up when you’re going out. How do you come up with new ways to style items?  I’ve been into fashion since I was a little girl, and styling has come naturally to me. I try to think outside of the box and how I can get the most out of one piece, because then you’ll wear it more and it’ll stay in your closet longer. What I’ve learned for myself is to look for things I feel comfortable in; I know if I’m not confident or don’t feel good in something, I won’t feel good during the day and I’m not going to want to wear it. It’ll just sit in my closet. Why did you start Less Is More’s namesake line?  It’s been my dream to have my own fashion line and collection. All the fabrics are natural including hemp, cotton, and linen. There are sweatpants, crewneck sweatshirts, socks, and tote bags. (The sweats are) 100 percent cotton, and it’s a really heavy cotton so it feels nice on. I’m working on designing a (larger)

line, which I’m hoping to have out next year. I want it to be the type of go-to pieces you wear over and over again. Where do you typically host pop-ups? Ú W.I.P. Goods, Pürre Boutique, and Neat Coffee. It’s interesting because I’m in L.A. now, but most of my popups are in Orange County, specifically Costa Mesa. I think there’s just such a great community there. Tell us about The Garden. Ú My boyfriend is a great gardener; we have a garden in our backyard. My guy friends had been asking for vintage pieces, so the line is genderneutral and has more earthy tones— colors you’d find in a garden. I have continuous vintage drops on Instagram, and then in May, I released Garden boxes. It’s a set box that comes with a bunch of things: The Garden hat, olive oil, coffee beans, garden seed packets, and more.

FOR THE LONG RIDE... I WORKED MOWING LAWNS WHEN I WAS 17 AND ALWAYS WENT TO THE DUMP TO GET RID OF THE LAWN WASTE. I COULDN’T BELIEVE HOW MANY BEAUTIFUL THINGS I FOUND I KNEW I COULD FIX. AFTER MANY TRIPS TO THE DUMP, I DECIDED TO MAKE SOMETHING THAT WOULDN’T BREAK AND SAVE THE WORLD. BEING A SURFER IN THE 60’S, I CAME ACROSS MANY BROKEN SANDALS ACROSS THE BEACH. IT FINALLY CAME TO ME THAT I COULD MAKE A BETTER SANDAL THAT FELT GOOD, LASTED LONG, AND WOULDN’T END UP AT THE DUMP IN A LANDFILL. THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR, I DEVELOPED A “LAYERED CONSTRUCTION” BY COMBINING IMPROVED DENSITIES OF SPONGE RUBBER, WHICH ALLOWED ME TO REPAIR THE SANDALS IF THE STRAPS EVER PULLED OUT. I USED BETTER LEATHER SOURCES AND FORMULATED MY GLUE TO HOLD THE STRAPS AND LAYERS TOGETHER. THE STRAPS WERE SEWN USING BONDED NYLON THREAD AND CAME TOGETHER WITH A 2000 LB. PARACHUTE BOX-X STITCH TOE CONSTRUCTION. FORTY-SEVEN YEARS LATER, MY TEAM ENDEAVORS TO KEEP THE QUALITY HIGH, REPAIR SANDALS IF NEEDED, AND DONATE OLD SANDALS WITH LIFE STILL LEFT IN THEM TO FEET IN NEED. TELL US ABOUT THE NONPROFIT.

It’s a 501(c) nonprofit organization that brings the community together. We work all year long and throw events throughout Orange County, and then we do the festival each year in June. It’s a one-day festival that goes until about 10 p.m. It’s completely free, which is super rare with Prides. In the past, we’ve had all kinds of local businesses, drag queens, floats, and lots of dancing.

52 ORA NGE CO A ST • June 2022

WHEN IS THE EVENT?

It’s on June 25. The parade itself usually kicks off at about 10:30 a.m. off Bush and Fourth streets. It cruises down Fourth Street, makes a right on Broadway, then a left on Third Street and then it keeps going until it hits the festival on Bush Street, where it ends. Once it reaches us at 11 a.m., that’s when the festival opens, and the entertainment usually starts around noon.

WHY IS IT IN SANTA ANA?

We’re in downtown Santa Ana because it’s just a really supportive city; the mayor, the council, the downtown liaisons, the businesses—they’ve all been extremely supportive and honestly instrumental in the festival.

MORE We talk to Sauvageau and learn more about Pride on Page 95.

he soaring lobby feels a little sleepy as we climb the dramatic staircase that leads to Henry’s Coastal Cuisine. It’s still offseason, and soon-to-be-sunburned guests are weeks from checking in, but an eager crew is all smiles leading the way to a sprawling patio emanating sunset vibes. The scene is unpopulated, and the choice of tables is ours. Of the six specialty cocktails, none seduce as the choices seem prosaic. Wines by the glass hold more appeal—a racy Loire Valley Vouvray, a Santa Barbara Chardonnay from Daou, or Whispering Angel rosé from Provence. Better still, they all cost less than those uninspiring cocktails. Our genial server is a polished practitioner, being shadowed by a demure trainee—a hopeful sign that Henry’s is prepping for a busy season. The server has the answer for every question, and I ask plenty given the menu descriptions are sometimes terse. Goat cheese fudge, for example. It’s a starter, but then what? His detailed description is convincing and leads to one of the menu’s most beguiling items. It’s an ingot of pale cheese blended with cauliflower you can’t see, but you can taste—it leavens the dense cheese and adds depth that plays off dots of electric blue spirulina aioli and a tiny top knot of caviar. It’s gorgeous to behold, lovely to consume, and surprisingly unorthodox. Executive chef Lewis Butler is the man behind the stunning appetizer. Helming Henry’s kitchen since September, he is cooking on the coast again after 11 years running the private dining show at the now-shuttered Center

Club. Prior to that, he was the executive chef at Laguna Beach’s Surf and Sand Resort. Markedly compact at 19 items, Butler’s menu here is seafood-heavy American fare you’ve seen throughout the county. Granted, locals don’t aim for the unconventional when heading to a Hilton, and tourists even less so. Choices are distilled to a shrewd core of can’t-lose favorites: fresh oysters, iceberg wedge, roasted sea scallops, etc. Yes, that goat cheese fudge is an outlier among mainstream options—and exactly why some will try it and others will avoid it. House-made sweet corn agnolotti is another standout starter of tiny pasta pockets filled with delicate fresh corn and napped with sage brown butter. Sauteed fresh spinach supplies a verdant counterpoint. Tender grilled octopus gets a hefty assist from roasted mushrooms and tiny potatoes. Honey soy hamachi crudo is exquisitely plated but loud flavors of soy and romesco sauces overwhelm the thin slices of marinated yellowtail. Lobster bisque is downright dreamy,

DRINK releasing its brandy-scented vapor as servers pour the satiny soup over fennel streusel. Wedge salad of baby iceberg outperforms with its elevated ranch dressing, crispy onions, and piece of regal Fourme d’Ambert cheese. Given the menu’s tight format, Butler and team have little wiggle room for missteps, and entrees show mastery on many fronts. Crispy-skin salmon arrives with a perfect crackling atop a rich fillet jazzed up with spinach horseradish puree. Sea bass, pan roasted, is lovely against saffron sauce, a note of tapenade and luscious marble potatoes confit. Scallops are precisely seared and paired with spring vegetable fricassee of saffron chorizo foam. Vegetarians, Butler has your back with a stellar portobello Wellington, with a burnished puff pastry dome set off by Pinot-vegetable reduction. Two classic beef entrees conjure retro specialoccasion fare, the stuff of anniversa-

ries and date nights. Beef Oscar’s filet is crowned with king crab wrapped in serrano ham and a sumptuous cloak of proper béarnaise. Cotê de Boeuf is the quintessential treat à deux—a mighty bone-in ribeye plus a gratin of potatoes cooked in garlic cream. Desserts are enduring shoo-ins—crème brûlée with berries, Valrhona chocolate lava cake,

and a mini cast-iron skillet bearing a rustic apple croustade with the finest, most delicate restaurant pie crust on record. While not having a dazzling ocean view equal to the balcony rooms overhead, the 100-seat setting is rich with lighted palm trees and beach vistas. There’s a glass-wrapped fire pit plus more intimate seating at the patio’s edge, not far from the over-amplified musician. Live music is always a plus, but loud vocals certainly interfere with the relaxed vibe here. Adjusting the volume would be an easy remedy, maybe? Henry’s is yet another new restaurant forged in the crucible of the pandemic. The Waterfront Resort refused to give up on launching its fine dining venue, battling reversals, setbacks, and erratic glitches that sunk other operations. Henry’s is hardly done refining itself, but it’s here to stay for laudable dining with surroundings so enviable, fellow diners come from states away. photograph by E M I LY J . D AV I S

MY O.C.

Hard Habits to Break Moving out of the county meant more than just a change of address. by Allene Symons

A

few months ago, I moved to a new address barely north of the Orange County line. So near yet so far! What hit me was the psychological distance after three decades as a homeowner living and working in central Orange County. I had taken so much for granted; how smoothly time flew when I navigated within the county. Now if I wanted to play homing pigeon to my familiar places,

I’d need to start with a baseline halfhour travel time and as much as double that for the unknown of a probably clogged freeway. The short move unraveled my routine and rattled my identity. I didn’t realize how invested I was in locale as well as the comfort of knowing the route. I enjoyed seeing people with whom I regularly conducted business at my grocery stores, my longtime dry cleaners, my go-to Ace hardware store, a favorite bank branch, and the post office. It’s about routines and preferences: When I had paint cans and canisters of old household chemicals, I headed for the reliable if unlovely hazardous waste site in Anaheim. I was feeling dismal about my failure to adjust when a police officer blinked his lights and pulled me over. I’d been unaware that I was driving over the temporary posted speed limit in a work zone. Darn, I thought, this would be my first moving violation in decades. He asked for my license. I pulled out the temporary printed document, fresh from the DMV, with the new address. I explained, needlessly, that I had just moved. “Moved from where?” he asked, being friendly and giving me hope that he might cut me a break. “From Orange County,” I said. “What?” he responded, as if in disbelief. “People usually move the other way, from L.A. to O.C.” He must have felt sorry for me because he didn’t give me a citation. I felt grateful yet kind of bummed, as if his comment implied that my life had regressed. I had grown up in L.A. County. I’d left it for a decade in New York City then moved to Orange County a long time ago. June 2022 • OR A NGE COAST 75

I N 2020, I L O S T MY H U S B A N D, Alan, after a long illness. Several months later, in a bittersweet decision, I decided to downsize and sell the house. Certainly, I could have stayed, but the house was too large and required too much upkeep. Plus, I wanted his only daughter to receive her part of the legacy from her dad right away. Envisioning something cozy and manageable, I looked around a bit, figuring maybe a nice condo with a spacious balcony or a townhouse. But prices for all types of residences in O.C. were exorbitant, and nothing inspired me. A solution came into focus; I already had a place—except it was over the county line. In 2005, I had inherited my childhood home, a small Craftsman-style bungalow, and I’d kept it as a rental property. Now those tenants would be leaving, and it seemed like fate. I could spruce up the Long Beach bungalow a bit and move right in. After my encounter with the police officer, I drove north to head home. I thought about how I’d once lived a short drive to South Coast Plaza. I slid into a reverie of other former haunts. Could I sustain a commute now, from farther away? What about my evening book group at Laguna Beach Books? Were my favorite restaurants—Sapphire in Laguna Beach and Citrus City in Old Towne Orange; Indian cuisine at Royal Khyber, and pho from a favorite Vietnamese takeout place in Garden Grove— all destined to be past tense? And what about McCormick & Schmick in Downtown Disney, where in the past I’d book Thanksgiving and Easter dinner for two because Alan’s daughter and her family lived too far away for sharing those holidays with us. Should I renew my membership, now as a singleton, to the once-nearby Bowers Museum, where Alan and I enjoyed strolling among fascinating displays, never missing a show, ranging from the interactive “Benjamin Franklin” and “Frida Kahlo: Her Photographs” to

MY O.C. the perfect guy theme of “Knights in Armor.” That led to thoughts of Bowers by day and its Tangata Restaurant, where I formerly met friends for lunch. Not so easy, with a midday challenge of the Orange Crush freeway interchange. Then there were remembrances of seasons past at South Coast Repertory, where some of my standouts were the premiere of “Wit” by Margaret Edson and the magical, musical versions of “The Fantastics” and “The Tempest.” How could I give up the excitement of a new season at South Coast Rep? We’d been subscribers since the 1990s—second Saturday evening, second row center. That was my world, my county … my former county. My favorite blue-sky photo of the site, capturing a view across one of its islands to Saddleback, still serves as my LinkedIn background photo, and I have no intention of giving it up. It wasn’t just about chapter meetings, now far less convenient to attend. For years, this sanctuary was a favorite place for my husband and me to take long walks together. It became a place for me

to come alone and heal from the loss. I thought about the resident pair of ospreys, sea eagles that make their nest in the wildlife sanctuary. They return every year. They can often be seen high up in their reed-woven platform nest surveying their Kingdom of the County. I recalled being there, standing on a trail, inhaling the sweet scent of sage and other natural foliage, and this set other thoughts in motion. Is it realistic to cling—at least in part—to my old routine? Is the San Joaquin Marsh simply too far to drive? Am I being impractical … or is practicality overrated? I was determined to move forward with my life, yet three decades of familiarity seemed to hold me back. Epiphanies don’t come easy, but sometimes they cut through confusion and mine was this: I am not trying to get over it. I want to embrace my life as an honorary resident. I want O.C. to keep its hold on me.

Orange County is home to many trailblazers in the LGBTQ community who work tirelessly to serve others, advocate for inclusivity and equal rights, and inspire those around them to live and love as their authentic selves. In honor of Pride Month, we’re celebrating these individuals and the organizations they lead, and having them tell us, in their own words, what Pride means to them. he Center celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Tell us a bit about that history. J We were founded in 1971, just two years after the Stonewall riots that kicked off the LGBTQ movement in this country. People are surprised to hear that the Center is the fourth oldest in the country. We were formed just after the ones in New York, San 92 O R A N G E C O A S T • June 2022

Francisco, and L.A. And that was because back in the day, Laguna Beach was a real hub for the community—a safe space in conservative Orange County. How has the organization evolved over the years? J Our mission has been steadfast; we advocate on behalf of the queer

community. What has changed is what that advocacy looks like. In the beginning, it was lesbians and gays trying to have jobs and families and rights. Now our advocacy for the most marginalized people looks like LGBTQ seniors who need help because they want their partners to be able to visit them in assisted-living facilities; trans people, specifically trans people

of color, whose very safety is our primary concern; or helping students with their Gender-Sexuality Alliance clubs. We’re in 50 middle and high schools in O.C. People think, “Oh it’s OK to be queer now; young people have it so easy.” Not the case. What are some of the other services you offer?  Another big one is our health counseling program. We conduct more than 7,000 sessions a year, in multiple languages and on a sliding scale so that no one is ever turned away. The need for these services is at an all-time high, up 40 percent from last year, which was in itself a record year. We also off er overall health and wellness services in the areas of STI (sexually transmitted infection) and HIV testing, tobacco cessation, and substance use prevention. And a program that many people don’t know we off er is immigration resources. Asylumseekers leave their home countries because they are being persecuted and they come here looking for a better life, often finding themselves in ICE detention. We help them with housing, transportation, mental health services, and more. How has the LGBTQ community in O.C. changed since you moved here in the ’90s?  Overall, it’s changed for the better. Our allyship within the greater community of Orange County has been better. It’s easier to be LGBTQ in Orange County. But that has also made it less necessary to have those gathering spots in Laguna Beach and elsewhere, which makes it hard to find the community. So it’s more mainstream, which is good, but for those most marginalized folks, it’s hard for them to find that community. And that’s where the center comes in. A lot of people think we’ve progressed so much, why do we still need LGBTQ centers? The fact is, because we’ve progressed so much, more and more people are coming out every year. And many of them are not met with acceptance from their families and communities. We meet them where they are.

BO RUBERG Associate professor of film and media studies at UC Irvine The author of “The Queer Games Avant-Garde: How LGBTQ Game Makers Are Reimagining the Medium of Video Games” won the Stonewall Book Award for nonfiction in 2021. Queer games can be video games that have LGBTQ content in them—so that might be LGBTQ characters, story lines, romance lines. Also, video games that are made by LGBTQ people. We might also say that queer games are games that give us a chance to challenge and reconsider our culture’s normal ideas about gender and sexuality. Some of them can be very experimental. One of my favorites is called “Octodad,” where you are playing as a bright yellow octopus in a business suit. You have a wife and kids, and you have to pretend that you are a normal human dad. You succeed in the game by walking around and not knocking over too many things and not getting noticed. It seems fun and ridiculous. But if you look for the meaning below the surface, you can see that it’s actually about trying to pass. You’re trying to look like you are a white, straight, cisgender dad who is trying to navigate this world that is not meant for you in a body that doesn’t fit. It becomes a queer and trans story through the metaphor of this octopus. June 2022 • O R A N G E C O A S T 93

ell us about the parade and festival. J It’s always been a smaller Pride, but in 2019 we blew up. We hit about 30,000 attendees, and it kind of shot us into the bigger Pride arena. I sit around all the time trying to figure out why that happened in 2019; as far as I can tell, it was just kind of the perfect moment, the perfect time in history. The need is obviously there, the community is becoming more visible. This is a 100 percent volunteer-run organization; the volunteers staff the entire festival.

from catering to the youth, such as painting in the park or family picnics, and then we do a lot of adult events including drag bingos; Bearlesque, where it’s gentlemen burlesque dancers; the Closet Ball, where we take seasoned drag performers and people who have never done drag before and we put on a big drag show. We try to do at least a monthly event; we’re Pride 365, which means that you’re working all year long to do events for the community. Some Prides only throw the Pride festival every year.

What other events do you host? J We try to do a really wide range throughout the year. Anything

Why are pride events so important to the community? J Throwing the festival itself is

amazing because it provides a space (for the LGBTQ community). To be surrounded by people who are like you just gives you this sense of belonging. We keep it free because we want the teenagers to be able to come as well. A lot of us were gay teenagers who couldn’t afford to get into Pride, and we really wanted to be there. There’s not a single event or festival that I’ve thrown that somebody doesn’t jump into my arms crying and thanking me. And that’s why we do it—for those moments, for those people. You can just see it in their eyes how much this meant to them. It just gives you the chills all over and you say, “OK, this is why I work so hard all year.” June 2022 • O R A N G E C O A S T 95

hy did you start your nonprofit? J I started Operation Warm Wishes 15 years ago because of my own struggles. Growing up, I was homeless for a couple years, living in various motels around Orange County. I didn’t fit in as a teenager and I was bullied a lot. Being Christian and gay, people told me I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do; but all I wanted to do was serve and make a difference. I want to give hope to people who are told they don’t matter or that they can’t do something. When I was experiencing some tough times in my youth and early 20s, I asked 96 O R A N G E C O A S T • June 2022

God, “Why am I going through all of this?” At first, I didn’t really understand it, but now it all makes sense. The people who I’m helping are experiencing a lot of the same things I have. I believe it all served its purpose. What services does your nonprofit provide? J We provide food, clothing, housing, laundry services, and mentorship programs. When we first started, we were only in Tustin, but now we’re all over Southern California. We don’t care who you are or where you’re at in your life, we’re going to help you.

Have you faced challenges because of your sexuality? J Yes, especially at the beginning. In 2010, I was crowned Mr. Gay Orange County. I used that platform to further what I was doing. I was in the newspaper for the events I was throwing, and some people would sign up and offer to help, but after finding out I’m gay they would call and say things like, “We don’t really believe in your lifestyle, so we won’t be helping you.” What lifestyle am I living? I’m helping people, and I just happen to be gay. What makes your work fulfilling? J Knowing that seeds have been planted. It’s not only the homeless or those in

need who are getting help; a lot of times it’s the volunteers who are receiving a lesson of love and kindness. Many people who volunteer for the first time with Operation Warm Wishes didn’t previously have a passion to serve, but now they’re starting their own organizations and are doing big things. Any events this month?  Yes, we’re having a Father’s Day event for homeless dads. We’re giving the guys a day at a golf club where they can golf and bond with each other. Our homeless men are the ones who can feel especially low and need encouragement, so I want to make sure they get that.

We are the longest-running LGBTQ legal organization in Orange County, and there are three things that we do primarily. First is visibility—letting people know that there is an active and vibrant LGBTQ community within the bar here in Orange County. Also to educate our members about LGBTQ issues locally, statewide, and nationally. And lastly, networking and giving people the opportunity to come together and share their experiences. We have a few marquee events we do yearly, such as the Harvey Milk Day Luncheon where we’ll have a guest speaker to get us up to date on LGBTQ legislation. I suspect the focus this year will be on upcoming decisions the Supreme Court will be making, as well as the increased wave of anti-LGBTQ legislation. But our purpose is really to provide a safe place. To let law students see people in the law community who are out and proud. To show that you can be your true and authentic self in your professional career here in Orange County. June 2022 • O R A N G E C O A S T 97

ell us about the history of the OCGMC. J This is our 21st year. It was started as an opportunity for gay men to network and have a musical home and also to entertain and educate Orange County. Twenty years ago, the environment was not as receptive to a gay organization. But we persevered and became what we are today, which is a well-known group locally and even nationally. Do you also sing? J Yes, I sing bass. We’re the foundation of the group. Every section has a very high opinion of themselves, and we’re no exception. My involvement began in 2018 when I moved here from Michigan. I had sung with groups there, and when

I found this group I couldn’t wait to join. I got deeply involved and was elected president and chairman of the board in 2019. I don’t do anything in a small way. Why is the group so important to you? J The gay community in Orange County is quite fragmented. To find a community where a person can be themselves is an important thing. There’s something about choral music that brings people together, and it provides a strong bonding opportunity for these men. When male voices merge, they multiply all on their own. The world melts away and you’re one voice. We rehearse every week, and we have a great artistic director, Bob Gunn. Though the chorus is in the spotlight, it’s

much bigger than that. We provide a safe haven for our members and give back as much as possible to O.C. We just kicked off a senior outreach project in partnership with the LGBTQ Center OC. We reach out to single gay seniors and provide wellness checks, get them pen pals and free tickets to our concerts. Where can people see you perform next? J We’ll be singing the national anthem at the O.C. Soccer Club’s Pride event on June 4. And we have a concert on July 16 focused on modern queer performers and composers. It will pull from today’s pop music with a few throwbacks. We hope to emphasize how we’re part of America and part of this community. June 2022 • O R A N G E C O A S T 99

ow long has your organization provided health and HIV care to the O.C. LGBTQ community? J We were founded in 1985 by a group of volunteers who had seen friends, family members, and neighbors dying of this strange new disease, which was HIV. In that first decade, there wasn’t great treatment. So really our focus was helping people die with dignity. In 1995, when new medications came out, suddenly there was hope. Our focus became helping people get treatment.

What services did you develop to help achieve that goal? J We built out housing and transportation services, nutrition 100 O R A N G E C O A S T • June 2022

support, mental health counseling, anything to help folks with their treatment. And then after that, we really wanted to focus on HIV prevention through testing and outreach in the community. The highest rates of infection were in communities of color. But it wasn’t a lack of education. What was lacking was access to appropriate healthcare. There was a survey done and providers were asked, “Are you comfortable serving members of the LGBTQ+ community?” And 78 percent said, “yes.” Now, that doesn’t sound bad. But the next question was, “Do you feel you lack the training to serve the LGBTQ+ community?” And 70 percent said, “yes.”

What does the organization look like today?  We continue to provide the full continuum of support for HIV, but we also provide medical care, screenings, family planning services, and our ultimate goal is to end this epidemic. The only way to do that is to address the inequities in healthcare. I first got involved here as a volunteer (in 1993) because a family friend, a young man 30 years old, had suddenly passed away from HIV. And his family had to deal with it alone. As a gay man, HIV had a major eff ect on my community. I made it my life’s work to do everything to help those with HIV.

SAR AH DELGADO Assistant general manager of Tin Lizzie Saloon The Costa Mesa establishment is one of the longest-running gay bars in Orange County. This bar has been here since the ’50s, and I believe it’s been a gay bar since the ’70s. When my friends, the owners of Memphis Cafe, bought it in 2005, the only stipulation the owner had was that it remain a gay bar. I’ve been coming here since I was 21, and I’m 43 now. We’re really a family. There’s such a sense of community here and we welcome everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay, bi, trans, or straight. We’re just a friendly neighborhood/gayborhood watering hole, and our longevity speaks for itself. June 2022 • O R A N G E C O A S T 101

hat led to you cofounding the organization? J Alianza Translatinx started in April of 2020 and by August of that year we were officially registered as a nonprofit. We’re under the sponsorship of TransLatina Coalition, which is a national advocacy organization based out of Los Angeles. Alianza Translatinx is the first trans-led organization in Orange County. We address the needs of the local transgender and gender nonconforming community. Our office is in Santa Ana. The organization was founded as a response to the lack of services and resources specifically designed to address the large disparities the transgender and gender

President and CEO of Alianza Translatinx

nonconforming community faces here. How do you tackle those disparities? J During the pandemic, we really wanted to assist members of the community who were houseless by providing support, food, and information. The need was exacerbated at the time, but it continues. We provide direct services such as mental health therapy sessions and legal name and gendermarker change supportive services— which means we assist community members (in updating) their legal documentation to reflect their current identity, for free. We also have a social group that meets once a week, and on Fridays we have a collaboration with

Second Harvest Food Bank to provide pantry and fresh goods to community members. Are you also an advocacy organization? J Yes, we advocate for the rights of our community members, and we often partner with organizations to bring awareness to the needs of our community. We have events such as community health fairs, our annual Trans Pride in August, and our TransGiving dinner in November aimed to serve community members who have been displaced from their families. What does Alianza mean? J It translates as Alliance. The

purpose is to create alliances within our community. Our doors are open to everyone. Our services are available to anyone. But we do focus on the communities that are most vulnerable. Growing up in Orange County, I always felt that this was a very conservative county and there was little support from local organizations for the trans community. And unfortunately, I continue to see that. While we’re making history in establishing this organization, there’s still a long way to go. Our community members continue to face discrimination and harassment. I continue to see hate crimes. And the only way to change that is working together with other local organizations to make change. DINING GUIDE BISTANGO A longtime airport-area mainstay, Bistango has remained surprisingly contemporary, with creative dishes such as sweet, soulful garlic soup, and black truffle ravioli. It’s also a classy venue for live music, and its rotating art collection adds to the air of urban sophistication. 19100 Von Karman Ave., 949-752-5222. $$$ CHA CHA’S L ATIN KITCHEN This addition to the restaurant family owned by industry vets Don Myers and Peter Serantoni is an inviting casa with a menu of modern Mexican fare boosted by commendable new dishes that blur some borders—sopes, empanadas, aguachile, and pozole to name a few. The indoor-meets-outdoor patio by designer Thomas Schoos is a fine upgrade of the Brea flagship. Weekly specials add value and excitement. Impressive tequila menu. 13126 Jamboree Road, 714-408-7819. See Brea location. $$ CUCINA ENOTECA This 285-seat operation from San Diego’s Urban Kitchen Group offers two sprawling patios and a huge, lively dining room with bar and wine minimarket, and the scene oozes chic with scads of handmade furnishings for sale. The Cal-Ital menu is equally large and inventive, from spreads in Mason jars and salumi platters to house-made pastas. Particularly good for large parties. 532 Spectrum Center Drive, 949-861-2222. See Newport Beach location. $$ HABANA We waited 22 years for this glamorous Habana sibling, and it was worth it—a sprawling 300-seat compound that co-opts Cuba’s frozen-in-time splendor. A roomy patio open to the sky is made intimate by high walls and lots of beautiful props and vignettes, with alcoves dedicated to house pastries and coffees. Despite the impressive scale, the menu hews tightly to the focused offerings at its Costa Mesa original. 708 Spectrum Center Drive, 949-419-0100. See Costa Mesa location. $$$ JA JIAOZI It’s all about handmade dumplings here. They grace every table, anchoring meals rounded out with other hot and cold dishes. First-timers, ask your able server for help. Top picks include steamed Flaming Hot and boiled Signature jiaozi, along with refreshing tofu-skin salad. Top-notch shrimp fried rice is a winner, too. Watch the masters at work from a five-seat bar. 13776 Jamboree Road, Irvine, 714-786-8999. $$ LITTLE SISTER This Irvine Spectrum spot is an XXL bistro to older sister shop LSXO. Chef-partner Tim Vuong musters a team that pulls off a bigger menu, bigger digs, and a bigger profile with ease. Vintage rap tracks and a crackerjack bar keep the vibe lively. 896 Spectrum Center Drive, 949-800-8798. $$$ PORCH & SWING This delightful indie serves a “taste BEST NEW RESTAURANT of Charleston” starring original riffs 2021 on American classics and cocktails by Andrew Parish. LAGUNA BE ACH BROADWAY BY AMAR SANTANA Boy wonder chef Amar Santana and industry vet Ahmed Labbate decamped Charlie Palmer to create this sexy urban bistro. Fans old and new keep the tight quarters humming to the backdrop of an open kitchen and vintage flicks playing on the flat-screen over the expansive bar. Santana’s dishes are opulent and intense. The wine list includes many notable half-bottles. 328 Glenneyre St., 949-715-8234. $$$ THE DRAKE The grown-ups sipping cocktails are here for a full serving of primo live music paired with the cuisine of Paul Gstrein (ex of Bistango and Bayside). Laguna’s own Alec Glasser prevails in creating a dashing joint where both the musicians and the kitchen have serious chops. Diners dig into Euro-inflected dishes (try the lamb lollipops, the Alpine melt, the chile-lime swordfish). Friday and Saturday night tasting menus are utterly indulgent. 3333 Bristol St., 714-266-3388. Closed Sunday and Monday. $$$ PARADISE DYNAST Y Singapore’s largest restaurant group opts for the Bloomingdale’s end of South Coast Plaza for its first U.S. operation with this wildly popular soup dumpling specialist that pioneered xiao long bao, oozing with luxury ingredients that include black truffles, foie gras, and crab roe. Ultramodern digs seat diners in view of an exhibition kitchen where 20 artisans handcraft a steady flow of dumplings to support a 75-dish menu starring dim sum and Sichuan classics. Walk-up wait list. 3333 Bristol St., 714-617-4630 $$ ROYAL KHYBER Arun Puri, the creator behind Orange County’s first Indian restaurant, is still buying the spices and manning the tandoor oven in the skilled kitchen at this upscale choice for first-rate renditions of classics such as butter chicken, tikka masala, and the signature Khyber’s Nectar, a dish of slow-cooked lamb

Louis XV dessert at Knife Pleat shanks said to be an aphrodisiac. 1621 W. Sunflower Ave., 714-436-1010. $$ TABLEAU KITCHEN AND BAR South Coast Plaza’s shiny new addition categorizes its cuisine as New American—a hazy designation for chef-owner John Park’s canny brunch and dinner menus that defy easy labels. Think fried burrata sandwich with pumpkin seed pesto, souffle-light berry pancakes with chamomile whipped cream, and shrimp and grits with surprise slices of lap cheong. Desserts are dazzlers. Captivating cocktails. 3333 Bear St., 714-872-8054. $$ TERRACE BY MIX MIX Canny chef-owner Ross Pangilinan leverages the success of his original Mix Mix Kitchen Bar in downtown Santa Ana with this minimalist aerie overlooking the stylish Bridge of Gardens skywalk at South Coast Plaza. This venue lacks a full bar, but it has wine and beer and is open daily with ample free parking. Fans love the three-course lunch for $20, but weekend brunch with its mimosa cart beguiles, and dinner offers the best prix fixe in the center. Don’t-miss dishes include Asian ribs, hamachi crudo, and pork cheek adobo. 3333 Bear St., 657-231-6447. $$ VACA Top chef Amar Santana and partner Ahmed Labbate run an exuberant, singular ode to Spain. Santana sidesteps the “eat local” crusade, offering peerless jamon Iberico, lush bomba rice for paellas, and verdant Mahon gin for cocktails. Dozens of authentic tapas beg to be tried, but do consider excellent wood-grilled steaks, dry-aged in-house. Dinner tables at prime times are scarce, so plan, wait, or aim for lunch. 695 Town Center Drive, 714-463-6060. $$$

TUSTIN CENTRO STORICO Old Town Tustin’s new kid on the old block transforms a vintage building into a spaghetteria and bar, plus a back-pocket cafe. Artisan, fresh daily pasta is the latest effort from the Pozzuoli family behind Centro, the excellent micro pizzeria next door. Signature dishes include Capperi e Olive (casarecca), Aglione (bucatini), and grilled por-

terhouse for two. 405 El Camino Real., 714-258-8817. $$ THE WINERY RESTAURANT & WINE BAR The O.C. power crowd doesn’t care that this isn’t a winery, but a huge, handsome restaurant that attracts disciples of steak, wine, and cigars. They’re exactly the folks you’d expect would follow partners JC Clow and William Lewis from their previous gig at Morton’s, with executive chef Yvon Goetz in tow. Best bets include Goetz’s signature Alsatian “pizza” and the Colorado buffalo carpaccio. If the 7,500-bottle wine cellar isn’t enough, you can always purchase a private wine locker. 2647 Park Ave., 714258-7600. See Newport Beach location. $$$ THE YELLOW CHILLI The Yellow Chilli is another franchise by Sanjeev Kapoor, India’s mega-celebrity chef. Bigger than Wolfgang or Martha. The massive menu proves the master chef isn’t stingy with recipes, not after writing more than 150 cookbooks. Knowledgeable servers help navigate the options. Don’t miss Sham Savera, one of Kapoor’s most famous creations: open-face spinach dumplings filled with fresh white paneer that float in silky tomato gravy spiked with garlic, cardamom, and mace. 2463 Park Ave., 714389-5280. $$ ZOV’S TUSTIN BISTRO Fans love Zov Karamardian’s modern, creative way with Mediterranean flavors. Zov keeps her flagship venue fresh and stylish. Expect Cal-Med dishes such as Moroccan salmon salad, spiced lamb burger, and pomegranate baby back ribs. Desserts are a standout, as are cocktails and chic mezze starters. The patio cafe out back stays busy at lunch and weekend breakfast. 17440 E. 17th St., 714-838-8855. See Newport Coast location. $$$

Irvine’s Jonah Bonner previously appeared on Seasons 11 and 13 of the reality TV competition show “American Ninja Warrior.” The 25-year-old contestant is back this season to conquer the nation’s most notorious obstacle course. by Elena Malek

What was your reaction to being called back this season? It’s obviously exciting, but it’s also rewarding. With it being quite a popular show, they have to have new characters all the time, so they’re constantly changing the competitor list. I feel appreciated because I haven’t been replaced by a new person. How did you train for the competition? There’s a ninja training gym in San Dimas called Movement Lab that I go to every week. (It has) legitimate ninja obstacles that are very similar to the ones on the show. I do a lot of rock climbing (which) helps with grip

strength and overall body awareness. I also do mountain biking and BMX, which helps with cardio, and other activities that I enjoy and keep me fit like surfing and running. You also have a background in trampoline? Yeah! I represented the U.S. for trampoline in 2015 at the World Age Group Championships in Denmark. My trampoline training also helped immensely with air SEE HIM!

awareness and reflexes when it comes to controlling my body in the air and grabbing hold of the next obstacle. What are your goals going into this competition? I just want to have fun. The obstacles are intimidating, but you learn to conquer them. In a sense, it feels like taming a dragon. I’d also love to make it to the national finals, which are in Las Vegas. In 2019, I was three people short of making it. In 2021, I had an early fall on the course. I’m hoping that I can do better than I’ve ever done before and make it all the way this time.

The Cal State Fullerton marketing student dreamt of creating a campus “gym for the mind” — a place to proactively cultivate mental toughness. Empowered by the President’s Scholar leadership program for high-achieving students, Asha successfully pitched her idea to President Fram Virjee. Now graduated, Asha is proud that the new student wellness room will open in 2022. Learn more about Asha’s story: campaign.fullerton.edu/empowerment/asha
