Our central location makes Santa Ana the ideal place to stay while you explore Orange County. You’re within minutes of popular beaches, worldfamous attractions, and additional shopping and dining.
Historic Gems LEGENDARY LOCALS &
Named the county seat in 1889, Santa Ana was founded as the governmental, financial, and cultural center of Orange County, and some pretty impressive people—and places—helped the town flourish. Want to know more? Take a look at our roster of past and present Santa Ana MVPs.
Architecture bu s should check out the Old Orange County Courthouse, a 1901 historic landmark that has witnessed many events that shaped what the O.C. is today. It’s Southern California’s oldest (and arguably most beautiful) court building. You may recognize it from movies and TV, including “American Horror Story “and “Legally Blonde.”
Bring your camera to capture the majesty of the 153-foot Santa Ana Water Tower, built in 1928. It’s easily spotted from Interstate 5, a beloved reminder of the city’s history. It’s equally important today, as it still supplies nearly one million gallons of water to Santa Ana residents.
Other well-known landmarks include the Chiarini Fountain, the visual anchor of Artists Village. The stone fountain was donated and carved in the 1990s by local stone crafting company Chiarini Marble
& Stone to honor the company’s founder and Downtown Santa Ana’s community of artists. Its whimsical design makes for a great photo backdrop. Another hidden gem is the beautifully restored 1889 Victorian building that houses the Dr. Willella Howe-Wa e House and Medical Museum. Celebrate the success of Dr. Willella Howe-Wa e, a trailblazer who was one of O.C.’s first female physicians.
Santa Ana is also home to several notable brands, including
Rickenbacker, which has been turning out hand-crafted electric guitars and bass instruments since 1931. Rock legends have played their guitars, including The Beatles, The Who, Green Day, The Bangles, and Metallica. Equally cool is Suavecito, a personal grooming company specializing in hair and body products with cultural cache. Founded in 2009 by local brothers Pete and Tony Adame and their childhood friend J-Bird, the company has exploded thanks to high-quality products and edgy, creative collaborations with brands like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Felix the Cat, and Hot Wheels. Jon Julio, a legendary skater and founder of the Blading Cup competition, founded THEM SKATES in 2018, translating years of industry expertise into a rollerblade brand for a new generation. Every model is designed for fast and durable street performance.
Proud Santaneros
In Santa Ana, we value originality and creativity. Collectively, our community is a celebration of uniqueness, and every resident contributes their own talents, ideas, and energy to the city. So, what does it mean to be a “Proud Santanero?”
“If you're visiting Downtown Santa Ana for a great burrito, you have to go to Burritos La Palma at 4th Street Market. For a great atmosphere and great drinks? Native Son. And for the best pizza, you gotta go to Loosies.”
— Jon Julio
For resident and entrepreneur Jon Julio, Santa Ana’s vibrant skating culture makes it the perfect home for his independent business, THEM SKATES. Julio, who made the city home in the mid-’90s, became active in the emerging inline skating scene in the community. A talented skater, Julio became interested in custom design and eventually founded THEM SKATES in 2018. “It just kind of happened organically,” he says. “I’ve skated for so long—since high school—and I had so much love for it. I was lucky to fall into learning the business side of things.”
You can find his store in Downtown Santa Ana, where Julio and his team develop the skates they sell, creating the unique molds required for each new line. The groundbreaking design—the skate parts are modular and can be changed and modified— has earned them a loyal following.
Julio is also responsible for creating the country’s premier inline skating competition. The Blading Cup, which he founded in 2011, has grown into an international event that draws competitors and spectators from more than 20 countries.
“For history and architecture enthusiasts, we have beautiful neighborhoods like French Park, Floral Park, Park Santiago, and Washington Square, with architectural styles ranging from Victorian to midcentury modern.”
— Tim Rush
Historian Tim Rush has lived in Santa Ana since 1987, but he says he’s still captivated by the city’s rich history and diverse culture. He also happens to reside in one of Santa Ana’s most interesting homes. “I live in a historic home originally built for the Yost family in 1926,” he says. Ed Yost owned several theaters in Orange County, including the iconic Yost Theater, a landmark in Downtown Santa Ana since 1912.
“My home is nearing its 100th anniversary,” Rush says, “which adds a special connection to local history that I’m proud to be part of.”
A CULTURE OF Creatives
Art and culture are woven into everyday life in Santa Ana, both literally and figuratively. Look around and you’ll see signs of our vibrant art scene everywhere. Our dedication to edgy and eclectic work also means we welcome diversity of every kind. Museums and galleries alike spotlight BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists and represent a wide range of artistic styles, from avant-garde performance art to more traditional fi ne art.
If you’re looking for one-of-akind artwork, check out North Broadway’s Avant Garden the Art Gallery, where you’ll fi nd a kaleidoscopic variety of art,
from jewelry to oil paintings and sculptures. Equally interesting is the Crear Studio. This free, interdisciplinary art gallery highlights work by local BIPOC artists, curators, and art educators in Santa Ana.
Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts partners with the City of Santa Ana to run the Grand Central Art Center, which anchors the Second Street Promenade. Three galleries, a video project gallery, and a project wall feature contemporary and socially relevant artwork, installations, and performances.
Other popular spots include the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, where you can fi nd a variety of solo exhibits,
as well as group shows built around themes like car culture, music, and architecture in art. You can mix your appreciation of architecture with art at the Santora Arts Building , a beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival structure that was built in 1929. Inside, you can explore multiple art studios and galleries like the Santa Ana College Gallery and the California Center for Digital Arts , which o ers photography and multimedia classes
And, of course, the city’s murals . It’s almost impossible to walk or drive around the city without spotting one (or more!) vibrant murals that exemplify our dedication to public art.

Credit for the drink's invention is usually given to a man named Michel Ésper who frequented Club Deportivo Potosino in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. In the 1960s, Ésper started ordering his beer with lime, salt, ice, and a straw in a cup called a "chabela.”
Curious club members began asking for the drink as "Michel's lemonade” which was shortened over time to Michelada.

skylights, modern accents, and tall windows with sweeping views of the surrounding Downtown Santa Ana Historic District. Or consider the historic Estate on Second, a century-old historic building in the heart of downtown. The classic lines of the building’s Georgian design are preserved in five restored and renovated indoor and outdoor spaces. Enjoy the natural light from arched Palladian windows and the character of original wood floors and brick. Equally charming is the Yost Theater, an iconic downtown landmark since
1912. The recently renovated venue's 1920s decor lends any event a luxurious feel.
When it comes to ambiance, it’s hard to beat the brilliance of Mother Nature, and that’s evident in Benchmark's outdoor, heated dining space under a canopy of trees. The breezy ambiance extends into a private indoor dining room.
At The Green Parrot Villa, guests can wander through lush gardens and enjoy the open-air courtyard and indoor banquet room surrounded by blooming gardens, twinkling lights, and vine-covered arches.
Once functioning as a working avocado and orange ranch, The Hacienda has been a Santa Ana landmark since 1901. Today, it’s a venue space with historic charm and a classic sense of Spanish-style architectural allure. Nestled within 12 acres of beautiful gardens and citrus groves, the Heritage Museum of Orange County is a Victorian gem. The crowning jewel is the historic plaza, where restored 1890s buildings function as a museum and breathtaking backdrop for events.
