yes, and somewhere in between, enjoys a still-thriving 45-year career in film and television that includes regular stints in Christopher Guest’s biting mockumentaries, a beloved role in the American Pie film franchise and, most recently, a bravura turn as Johnny Rose, the patriarch of a self-absorbed family that, after financial devastation, discovers their better selves in a tiny hole-in-the-wall town on Schitt’s Creek. Levy co-created the show with his son, Daniel, and it swept the top comedy series categories at the most recent Emmy Awards – including a personal trophy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. But back to that honorific celebrity mayorship. One day after his Emmy night victories, Levy “officially” took office. He and his wife Deborah have lived in the Alphabet Streets for the last 14 years, and have a deep love for the place they call home. Here, Levy reflects on what his latest achievements mean to him. Q: There’s a long tradition of celebrity honorary mayors in California, going all the way back to Will Rogers in Beverly Hills in the 1920s. What intrigues or amuses you about this opportunity? A: What intrigues me is just how powerful a figure I can actually become in

the world of politics. And how the accompanying political perks will make my life so much sweeter. What amuses me is the idea that these perks might be deemed honorary by some.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish during your two-year term? A: To heal a divided town. To reach across the aisle and work with people whose views might not be in line with my own. To get things done! Planting flowers in the village, although Rick Caruso has done a pretty good job there. Making sure our village sidewalks are clean, although Rick Caruso seems to have covered that, too. I’ll expand shopping opportunities, although Rick Caruso…I’ll think of something. Q: Did your old friend and colleague Martin Short, who’s previously held the position, put in a good word for you? A: Although it was not my best friend Marty Short who recommended me for this honor, I do know for a fact that Marty Short was the best honorary mayor that Pacific Palisades ever had. I choose these words carefully because they are not mine. They’re his. Q: You’re joining the illustrious ranks of Palisades celebrity mayors, a list that stretches back to the

early 1950s. Any particular heroes or inspirations of yours among them? A: Ethel Mertz aka Vivian Vance. I’m in the same group with Lucy Ricardo’s best friend! I grew up loving Jerry Lewis. I learned a lot about character comedy watching Walter Matthau. I’ve never been scared by anyone more than Anthony Hopkins. Being included on a list with these people – comedy icons like Billy Crystal, Chevy Chase and Kevin Nealon – is a dream come true. Oh, and Marty Short. He told me to make sure he was on this list. Q: Do you have past co-stars who are also nearby neighbors in the Palisades? A: Only Marty. And it’s getting a little tiring. Q: What initially drew you to this neighborhood? A: My wife and I found a house overlooking Temescal Canyon with lovely views of the Pacific and that’s all it took. We were hooked. We found it to be a quiet town with charming eateries, shops and a quaint bookstore. But soon after, businesses started to close and the village core took on a troubled appearance and was literally deserted in the evening. Then came the transformation by Rick Caruso. It has changed the personality of our town for the better. Hopefully, these businesses will survive the pandemic, as we all look forward to returning to life as we knew it.

Q: What are some of your favorite local businesses and activities? A: I love our daily walks down to the bluffs. Love shopping for clothes where you don’t have to leave the Palisades. Love all the eateries in town, especially the ambience of the Draycott. And I love that a new hardware store moved into our beloved Norris Hardware. I can now buy a hammer without driving to Malibu. Q: Among your many career accomplishments, you recently got to enjoy a big victory lap on Emmy night for your work on Schitt’s Creek. How did that abundance of appreciation from your industry hit you? A: The whole Emmy evening was totally surreal. To me, and my son Daniel, sweeping all our categories was as close to a love letter from the Academy members as we could have gotten. And being the first father and son to win Emmys in the same year was the biggest kick for me. Q: As a result of Schitt’s Creek’s success, is there a next goal you’ve long wanted that feels like it’s within your grasp now? A: There is. And I think I achieved it. I’m Honorary Mayor of Pacific Palisades. Q: As diametrically opposite as they may seem, is Pacific Palisades in any way at all like Schitt’s Creek? A: It absolutely is. Except for one thing: Palisades has money! PA L I S A D E S V I E W | FA L L 2 0 2 0 9

The shores of Los Angeles’ beach are lined with an endless row of lifeguard towers. But for generations of Palisades families, one tower reigns supreme.

J U S T S O U T H O F T H E J E T T Y at Will Rogers State Beach, Tower 15 has long been considered “the place to be” for surfers, swimmers, suntanned teenagers and sandcastle-builders. Anyone can show up at Tower 15 and run into a familiar face. Regardless of the school you attended or which part of the Palisades you’re from, everyone gathers as one community at Tower 15. On any given morning, you’ll find an eager crowd ready for some fun in the sun. They lug beach chairs, umbrellas, surf boards, coolers full of food and, of course, volleyballs. On Labor Day each year, the festivities get kicked up a notch. Volleyball nets (purchased at Bentons) are set up for the traditional parent/kid volleyball tournament. People stay until the sun goes down, bringing dinner or ordering pizza. One year, Dominos delivered over 30 pizzas to Tower 15. Watching the sun go down is always the best part of the day. gether, all while basking in the colorful glow of the sunset. These are wonderful times and wonderful memories. Today, these children have their own children, and keep many of Tower 15’s traditions alive. Even this summer, in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, Tower 15 was more popular and important than ever. The beach was the place everyone could go to get outside, socialize (at a distance) and find solace in open space, the sound of the waves and the comfort of our close knit community. It provided a sense of normalcy and reminded us of carefree summers from the past. As life changes all around us, one thing remains the same: This special spot at the Jetty is always there waiting. In the middle of Los Angeles, it’s a meeting place that provides a small-town feel and a place to create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Tower 15, for giving us all a home away from home.

I have used Sarah to buy 2 homes and sell 2 homes. She is amazing. I have already recommended her to friends and family who all love her. After dealing with the other agents, I always feel lucky I have Sarah in my corner to get me the best deal but more importantly, she makes what is normally an extremely stressful and emotional process a very easy and less stressful experience. I also love that she is from the area and knows the LA neighborhoods so well. I can’t speak more highly of Sarah.

am Lagana is really excited for the pandemic to be over. Sounds obvious— and it is, for many reasons—but that’s also when Los Angeles Rams fans will be able to join him in person for their first taste of the new SoFi Stadium. “This by far is the most amazing stadium in the world,” says Lagana, the Los Angeles Rams stadium announcer and current Palisades Chamber Board Member who’s been speaking to a mostly empty house since the Inglewood facility opened for gameplay in September. “It's nothing like

It gives you an entire perspective. You're feeling it, you're in it, you're part of it.” That’s just one of the jaw-dropping amenities at the ambitious venue already scheduled to host not only Rams home games but also mega-events like Super Bowl LVI and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic Games. It’s the sparkling centerpiece of the burgeoning new Hollywood Park development, where the complex incorporates various signature characteristics of Southern California into its environment. “As fans walk through the grandeur of the whole complex, it's like going into microclimates,” says Lagana. “Each area is unique. If you're on the east side of the building, you're feeling some of the nature of the Sierras. If you're on the west side of the building, you're feeling the coastal communities.” Molly Higgins, the Rams’ Vice President of Community Affairs and Engagement, says the team was especially pleased to “bring so much of Southern California into the stadium footprint.” The landscaping evokes hiking in the hills of Malibu, for example; the open-air panels catch the ocean breeze. “At different areas of the stadium, you can see all the way to the Pacific

Ocean and even the Hollywood sign,” she says. Once the pandemic abates and circumstances allow for a safe opening, Higgins anticipates the stadium will enjoy a vital role at the center of L.A. culture. “During a time when in-stadium experiences are really competing with the at-home experience, there's no question people are going to prefer to be at SoFi Stadium,” she says. “There's this growing sense to want to be able to socialize and gather again. Certainly, we want to be the team that is able to welcome our fans back with open arms.” Even without the fans to fire them up, the Rams players have been dazzled by their new playing field. “I was there for our first scrimmage,” Higgins recalls, “and to see the players walk out of that tunnel, the look of amazement and excitement and pride on their faces, and to see them pulling out their cell phones and taking videos – they were like little kids. Like ‘Oh my gosh, this is our house. This is our home.’” The stadium’s impact has already been felt outside the Rams’ inner circle. From students who toured it during 1 8 PA L I S A D E S V I E W | FA L L 2 0 2 0

construction to workers who participated in raising it from the ground up, Higgins says she’s heard story after story from people who already see SoFi as a touchstone, “I think of a gentleman I met a couple of years ago who was homeless,” she says. “He got the job at the stadium construction site and was able to reestablish contact with his kids. He now has an apartment, his family's reunited and he just purchased a second car. So when you think about it from that personal standpoint and the impact that it's had on the local community, I think it’s incredibly profound.” Lagana, who serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Pepperdine University and is a veteran Board member of the Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce, says he sees the venue’s allure and influence expanding well beyond the boundaries of Inglewood. “It's going to allow communities to share the whole experience of Rams football,” he says. “We have a lot of people who are fans; they were fans of the team when they were kids, like myself; they're fans of the team now,

We look forward to welcoming Los Angeles to our new home.”

Eat, Shop and Be Merry BY ELIZABETH JACOBI

I

often use the word “town” when I describe the Pacific Palisades. And it is — it’s the town where I grew up. Today, while it still has that same small town charm of Sunday brunch at Mort’s or Friday nights at Sparky’s Yogurt, it has become so much more. Before March, I often thought of the Palisades as my office. Having my own business and often running from back-to-back client meetings, I would often start my day with a croissant from Cinque Terre West. Afternoons might be spent

working on my laptop from Estate Coffee or anywhere in the Palisades Village. Who needs an office when you have this beautiful backdrop? On a recent drive, I was reminded of just how special this place is and why we should shop and dine locally. Whatever you’re craving, you can find it in town. From Sunday brunch at Porta Via to Vittorios on Marquez, there’s something for everyone. If you’re in the mood for Taco Tuesday, try Kay and Dave’s. Or a drive up to the Highlands for hillside views from Casa Nostra never disappoints. And we know there’s always room for dessert from Kay Bakery, The Yogurt Shop or McConnell’s. This holiday season will be a bit different. Supporting local businesses, while always important, is even more so this year. Thankfully, we have so many options right here in town.

The Village offers everything, from big-brand names to small businesses like The Little Market or Bonjour Fete. Walk across the street to The Gift Garden or Elizabeth Lamont just outside the Village. Let's not forget we all need stationery from Black Ink. While there might not be big holiday gatherings this year, everyone needs a new outfit (even if it is just for Zoom), and we don’t have to go far with Elyse Walker and BOCA. When the pandemic began, my husband and I made a point of dining and shopping from local businesses. It reminded us what a special place the Palisades is. I know you agree.

named Pacific Palisades, descriptive of its location on the naturally sculpted palisades overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Lots for the first homes were purchased on leasehold, contingent on ownership of a $1,000 share in the enterprise. The first streets were named after great religious scholars and leaders and Christian colleges. The Pacific Palisades Association, which conducted the real estate operation, fell upon hard times during the depression and was forced to sell the property outright and to open the community to development by outside investors. Neighborhoods of single-family dwellings sprang up in the 1920s and the first Business block was built in 1925. The 1930s saw steady growth and vigorous expansion in all directions occurred after World War II. By 1947, the community had several retail stores and a restaurant or two. Today, with a population of 28,000 residents and over 500 businesses — including retail shops and professional services — an atmosphere of a village still persists and personal concern over the quality of the community remains high. Though the community is within the City of Los Angeles, in keeping with the original intent of the founders, Pacific Palisades has kept its own name and post office designation, and functions as a town through the Community Council, has a first class and well-read weekly newspaper, a hometown band and symphony, a community theater, service clubs, fine schools, and places of worship, a YMCA, plus many active clubs and organizations. Civic pride by local residents is readily seen by the amount of extraordinary time spent in volunteerism and community service. The Chamber

Why Are You a Member?

“

“

The Palisades is such a special place. It’s important for those of us in business here to develop and maintain a strong sense of camaraderie and community. The Chamber is a major part of that element.

As soon as I began my computer service business in 3DFLƉF 3DOLVDGHV , knew that I needed to join the Chamber of Commerce. The best way to get out into the community is by participating in Chamber events and placing an ad in their business directory. 17 years ODWHU P\ EXVLQHVV is going strong.

The Chamber of Commerce has been an important partner to Porta 9LD WR EHƔHU XQderstand the business community of 3DFLƉF 3DOLVDGHV The Chamber continues to provide marketing and networking support to help EXLOG D EHƔHU community.

I joined the Palisades ChamEHU ZKHQ , ƉUVW started Mocha Bear Marketing for networking opportunities. +RZHYHU WKH Chamber has given me so much more than that. Not only do I get to meet entrepreneurs and other EXVLQHVV RZQHUV but I have also made amazing IULHQGV EXVLQHVV contacts and clients.
