COFFEE AND PLANTS
Coffee and plants...two words on nearly every millennial hipster’s hypothetical bingo card. Pasadena’s newly established caffeine corner, Coffee and Plants, offers plenty of Instagrammable opportunities among—you guessed it— coffee and plants. e locale has gained a following as the region’s first fully plant-based coffee shop, serving up uniquely crafted artisanal blends and delicious vegan baked goods. In addition to coffee classics like pour overs and cold brew, as well as ample espressobased options like mochas and cappuccinos, patrons may be surprised to discover unique, boldly-hued specialties like e Rose Bowl Latte (made with espresso, beet juice, rose/hibiscus syrup, and garnished with roses) and Blue Lavender Latte (made with lavender syrup, blue pea powder, and milk, garnished with lavender).
For those seeking a savory or sweet treat, opt for one (or all) of Coffee and Plants’ rotating selection of baked goods and pastries, made with wholesome and organic plant-based ingredients, like the savory mushroom and provolone croissant or blueberry poppyseed muffin.
While patrons may come for the drinks, they stay for the “good vibes” reflected in Coffee and Plants’ ethos: to be kind, do good, and feel good.
GUISADOS
After much anticipation, popular Los Angeles favorite Guisados has opened its doors on the site of the former Doña Rosa restaurant (RIP) and Pasadenans fi nally have a chance to experience Guisados’ famous signature braises. ough Guisados may be expanding, the family-owned establishment is still keeping up with their high standards.
Guisados’ savory, homestyle braises are simmered for hours, generously piled upon freshly handmade tortillas. e meat-centric braises include fl ank steak, shredded pork, chorizo, and shredded chicken that are sure to satiate; the vegetarianfriendly braise off erings (calabacitas, frijoles con queso, and hongos con cilantro) are equally hearty, fi lling, and delicious. In fact, the late local food legend, Jonathan Gold, previously named Guisados’ calabacitas tacos as one of his favorite vegetarian tacos.
If the (medium) level of spice hits you too hard, cool off with a refreshing agua fresca, made in-house daily like the Jamaica (hibiscus iced tea), Armando Palmero (a cheeky, fun twist on the popular classic with a combination of lemonade and Jamaica), or horchata.

PERRY’S JOINT
Aquick scroll through the mouthwatering images of Perry’s Joint’s Instagram sets hopes high for the sammie-seeking crowd and an in-person visit fulfi lls those very hopes, and more. Opened in 2004 by Perry Bennett, the eponymous cafe continues to win the hearts (and stomachs) of many Pasadenans.
Perry’s Joint boasts the claim that their original handcrafted gourmetstyle sandwiches are piled “higher and wider than any consumer’s mouth.” Consider this review your confi rmation. e ingredients seem simple enough and reminiscent of an elementary school lunch: deli meat, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and cheese; but in Bennett’s hands, the made-toorder combinations are anything but. Starting with a base (options include wheat, rye, sourdough, and squaw) of pillow-soft bread, Perry’s piles (and we mean piles!) on the highquality, fresh fi llings. e result is a multi-tiered monstrosity of satisfaction and wholesomeness.
In addition to the acclaimed sandwiches, Bennett is highly regarded for his involvement in the community. In keeping with his annual fundraising tradition (this year hit the 10year milestone), Bennett set aside Aug. 8 as the designated day where 100% of the day’s proceeds served as a collegiate scholarship to several graduates from John Muir High School. Alongside the GoFundMe campaign Bennet organized with the same intention, the proceeds exceeded $10,000.
