THERESA J. BARTA Barta Law Theresa Barta is a trial attorney who advocates for physicians and patients. She represents physicians and patients in lawsuits against insurance companies and health care systems, (especially in cases that involve retaliation). Barta started her law practice in 1998 and has since represented hundreds of physicians. Barta notes that physicians face many daunting issues with insurers, but a common scenario occurs when a physician is asked (or forced) to comply with a new treatment policy—for example, to prescribe cheaper medications or double-book patients—so the insurer can save money. If a physician resists the policy, they risk retaliation. This scenario impacts patients who are unable to continue receiving care from their physician of choice. This highlights why Barta’s area of legal expertise is so valuable. The author of the California Health Care Law blog, Barta also has a podcast in the works that will focus on teaching patients how to advocate for themselves and navigate the “big business” of our health care system that is so prevalent today.
