SANTA MONICA

LOS ANGELES’ BEACH CITY

With its incomparable oceanfront setting, world-class dining, lively cultural scene, and friendly locals, Santa Monica combines the laid-back appeal of a classic California beach town with a vibrant, big-city sophistication.

S

ET ALONG A BEAUTIFUL 3.5-MILE STRETCH OF

coastline just south of Malibu and north of Venice, Santa Monica blends an unmistakable California beach-town vibe with touches of Riviera-style romance and Hollywood glamour to create a destination that is truly like none other in the world. Santa Monica is where the city meets the sea. And whether you’re an urban sophisticate or a surfer (or, like many locals, a combination of the two), Santa Monica is an endlessly compelling (not to mention awardwinning) city: beautiful, creative, stylish, and a haven for outdoor recreation. Spend time here and you’ll quickly discover just how much Santa Monica packs into its compact, easily explored (no car needed) area. Along the oceanfront, you’ll find world-class hotels, celebrated restaurants, and real neighborhoods loaded with character. You can bike for hours, learn to surf, or simply take time to rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul. The city has also been an artistic center for Southern California for generations, with a remarkable number of local residents working in creative businesses. Thanks to more than 150 galleries, public art installations, theaters, and museums, culture is at your fingertips wherever you are throughout the city. While it has been a longtime playground for the entertainment industry (and a popular residence for creative minds, leading actors, musicians, and athletes), the city has also seen a wave of tech and Internet startups— so many, in fact, that Santa Monica was the start of what’s now known as “Silicon Beach.” The city’s celebrity clientele has encouraged clothing and interior designers to set up shop in retail areas such as Downtown Santa Monica (honored as one of America’s best downtowns by Forbes), Santa Monica Place, Montana Avenue, and Main Street. No matter what you do in this city—where art, nature, and urban excitement all converge—you’ll quickly discover that Santa Monica is as inspirational as it is irresistible. =

Route 66 Mark the end of the Mother Road. B Y ON E OF TH E MOST FAMOUS ROADS in the United States since its opening in 1926, Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway and the Mother Road) ends in Santa Monica. Like a sunny pot of gold, Santa Monica sits at the climax of the route that’s been celebrated in popular culture with a hit song “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66” and the 1960s television show Route 66. Whether you're going the distance from Chicago to the Pacific or just cruising a short stretch, the historic 2,448-mile ribbon of highway represents the ultimate road trip. The exact terminus of Route 66 has been the subject of debate. The road originally ended in Downtown Los Angeles until 1936, when lawmakers extended it to Lincoln and

Olympic boulevards in Santa Monica. Some say the route ends at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Ocean Avenue, where a bronze plaque in Palisades Park marks the spot. There are also several historic signs along Santa Monica Boulevard. In 2009, several preservation groups, along with Santa Monica Travel & Tourism (then known as the Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau) officially declared the Santa Monica Pier to be the traditional “End of the Trail.” Today, taking a selfie with the Route 66 sign there is a must. Stop by any Santa Monica Travel & Tourism Visitor Information Center to get your personalized certificate signed by the mayor of Santa Monica and buy Route 66 memorabilia. As a city, it is forward thinking and innovative, ever mindful of ways to ensure that the community is and remains healthy, clean, safe, and sustainable.

ECO-CONSCIOUSN ESS Santa Monica has long been recognized as a global leader in sustainability, with strong community participation that extends from best practices in the hospitality industry

(such as providing guest rooms equipped with energy-efficient thermostats and lighting and comprehensive recycling programs that divert waste from landfills) and green business certification to a wide-ranging Buy Local Santa Monica program. The Annenberg Community Beach House—a popular recreation space awarded LEED Gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for its sustainable construction—epitomizes the creative reuse of an existing structure refurbished with green features. transportation, choosing reusables, and saving water. Visitors can certainly play a part in those. Getting around on foot or by bicycle, bus, or light rail is easier than ever, with a network of bike lanes and “pedestrian scramble” lights that enhance walkability. The successful Breeze Bike Share program allows visitors to cycle around and lock bikes where they wish. Additionally, The Free Ride electric golf cart–style shuttles are based at some hotels and are available for going short distances around Downtown Santa Monica, Main Street, and Montana Avenue. (They’re free, but tips for the driver are appreciated.)

Finally, a TAP card (a multifunctional public transportation card) is good for rides on the Big Blue Bus—which runs on renewable natural gas—or the Metro. With its oceanside location, Santa Monica is naturally focused on the state of its offshore waters, with two nonprofits in the forefront. Heal the Bay (healthebay. org) concentrates on science, education, advocacy, and community action, and showcases its efforts at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. Throughout the year it organizes beach cleanups, issues a beach report card, and fights against new oil and gas drilling, among other things. The local office of the National Resources Defense Council (nrdc.org) carries out its broad environmental mission to safeguard the earth from a LEED Platinum building in Santa Monica’s pedestrian center. Among the group’s ocean-oriented priorities are protecting marine life and reducing pollution. Water is precious: Restaurants are not allowed to serve it unless it is requested, while bottle-filling stations on the Third

Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier reduce the need to buy bottled water. The city also promotes a smoke-free environment; there’s no lighting up on the Promenade, the Pier, the beach, or within 20 feet of building entrances. Everything points back to the bay. The natural environment is here for all to enjoy.

COM M U N ITY E NVI RON M E NT AN D H U MAN DIG N ITY Like all 87 cities in Los Angeles County, and many in the U.S., Santa Monica is grappling with the unfortunate and substantial increase in the homeless population over the last few years. It’s accepted that the best way to address homelessness is to provide permanent supported housing, and voters in the county and city have approved more resources to do that, as well as offer homeless services for mental health and substance abuse, among others. “Our basic philosophy is one of relentless compassionate engagement,” says Santa

Monica Mayor Ted Winterer, adding that the city has also allocated additional money to increase outreach to those who are living on the street. “This is not just a Santa Monica issue. It’s a regional and national issue, and it’s our number-one priority,” he says. Wish to donate or volunteer? Rather than give money directly to someone who may solicit spare change, put it in one of the dolphin statue collection points—they’re marked with a plaque—on the Third Street Promenade or the Pier. The money is collected and given as a grant to a nonprofit agency that addresses homelessness. For a list of nonprofit service providers, visit smgov.net/homelessness. While the police do everything they can to keep the streets safe, visitors should realize that the homeless are a mix of individuals from different backgrounds. Please treat them with courtesy, kindness, and dignity, but be circumspect. For more information, visit santamonica. com/cares.

you turn in Santa Monica there are locals in various yoga poses, power-walking, jogging, and biking. Many engage in their fitness pursuits on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, aka The Strand, or more commonly, the bike path. Most of the bike path’s calorieburning action takes place along a 4.8-mile stretch of sand from Temescal Canyon to the south, through Santa Monica State Beach—where it flows beneath the famous Santa Monica Pier—down to Venice Beach. Endurance athletes can tackle the whole 22-mile paved path, which extends from Torrance in Los Angeles’ South Bay area, through Santa Monica, up to Will Rogers

State Beach in Pacific Palisades. As sensory input goes, the bike path has it all: panoramic Pacific Ocean views, cool sea breezes, redolent beachfront cafés, and plenty of souvenir kiosks. Taking advantage of the ambience are people walking and jogging, in-line skaters, paddle-tennis players, volleyball teams, and, of course, cyclists. Plenty of options are available for cycling the bike path, including bike tours and rentals. Tandems, choppers, Budnitz cruisers, electric-powered bikes—whatever style you choose, the bike path awaits for beach cruisin’ and fun people-watching. Just be sure to stay alert and ride responsibly.

Santa Monica Pier ranks high on every visitor’s must-do list. The much-loved landmark—which is featured in many movies and TV shows—opened in 1909 and is now part of a wonderland of shops, restaurants, a trapeze school, an aquarium, a fully functioning vintage carousel, and a thrill-aminute amusement park, all perched over the Pacific and sun-splashed beaches. The admission-free Pacific Park, located on the Pier’s southern edge, has become known as California’s amusement park on the water. It offers midway games, food stands, and a dozen rides. Taking center stage is the Pacific Wheel, a solarpowered Ferris wheel with panoramic views of the Southern California coastline from more than 130 feet above the Pier. At night, the ride dazzles with energy-efficient LED lights that display computer-generated lighting entertainment. Take in more breathtaking ocean views on the West Coaster, an exhilarating roller coaster that zips riders up to a height of 55 feet. Thrill seekers can also challenge themselves with 15 games and attractions, including Riptide Ring Toss, Whac-a-Mole, and Skeeball. Visitors can purchase tickets for individual attractions or buy a wristband for a day of unlimited rides. WALKERS CROSS IN ALL DIRECTIONS AT AN INTERSECTION WITH A PEDESTRIAN SCRAMBLE TRAFFIC SIGNAL PHASE.

BE SAFE

Remember to stay alert and focus on your surroundings, whether in a car, on a train, on a bike, on an electric scooter, or on foot. WALKI NG ³ Although pedestrians have the

right-of-way at crosswalks, use caution and make eye contact with drivers to make sure they have seen you and are stopping their vehicle. ³ Texting or wearing headphones or earbuds and listening to music while walking impedes your hearing and can be distracting. ³ Pedestrians may only cross in marked crosswalks. Crossing outside of a marked crosswalk— jaywalking—is an offense, and police ticket for violations. ³ Know when to cross—only with the green light or when the “walk” sign is activated. Pedestrian scrambles are in operation

throughout Downtown Santa Monica. At these intersections, a pedestrian-only phase is included in the signal-light cycle, allowing people on foot and bikes to cross in every direction, including diagonally, at the same time. ³ Use extra care when crossing with children. Remember, drivers may not see little ones; hold their hands while crossing. ³ Don’t assert the right of way with a fast-moving vehicle. Allow vehicles enough time to stop.

BI KI NG ³ Pay attention and stay alert. ³ Always wear a helmet.

(Riders under 18 must wear a helmet by law.)

2 0 S A N TA MON I CA OF F I C I A L V I S I TOR S GU I DE

³ Riding against traffic is illegal and dangerous. Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and use the bike lane where available. ³ Obey all traffic laws and signals. Stop at stop signs and red lights. ³ Use hand signals and eye contact to communicate with motorists, other bicyclists, and pedestrians. ³ Make yourself visible to drivers, especially at night. Use lights and reflectors and wear bright clothing. ³ At pedestrian scramble crossings, ride across when the bicycle-specific traffic signal lights up with a green bike symbol.

DRIVING ³ Santa Monica is an active and

busy city. Stay focused on the road at all times. ³ Drivers and passengers must always wear seat belts. Children under 8 years old and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches tall must use a child safety seat. ³ In general, pedestrians have the right-of-way whenever they are in the road. Flashing red lights at crosswalks are treated like stop signs. Stop, look—THEN proceed. Always stop for pedestrians crossing at intersections and marked crosswalks. Wait until they have safely reached the opposite curb to proceed. ³ Except at pedestrian scrambles when the “walk” light is on, or unless otherwise posted, drivers are allowed to turn right at a red light after bringing the vehicle to a stop as long as foot, bicycle, and auto traffic are clear. When making right turns, and left turns against traffic, STOP and look for pedestrians before making your turn.

*Does not apply to food and retail locations. HARRY POTTER characters, names and related indicia are © & ™ Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Harry Potter Publishing Rights © JKR. (s18) ©2018 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved. 18-ADV-23754

GETTING AROUND

³ Cars are not permitted in bus

lanes, except to make right turns, which are restricted during peak periods by posted signs. ³ Obey posted speed limits and use common sense in congested areas. ³ Drivers are required to pull over to the side of the road for law-enforcement and other emergency vehicles with lights and sirens on. ³ Don’t text or otherwise handle

your phone while driving—it’s against the law and research shows it increases the likelihood of a collision 23.2 times over unimpaired driving.

SCOOTE RI NG ³ Motorized scooters may be

driven only by those with a valid driver’s license or instruction permit. Helmets are required and taking a passenger is prohibited. ³ Motorized scooters must be driven on the road, never on the sidewalk, and cannot be parked on the sidewalk in the way of pedestrian traffic. Night use of

motorized scooters lacking proper lighting equipment is illegal.

RI DI NG TH E RAI L ³ Always keep your distance from a train in motion. Stay away from the edge of the platform, never run after or next to a moving train, and wait for the train to come to a full stop before approaching. ³ Hold onto your children when a train approaches to prevent them from getting too close to the tracks. ³ Don’t skate or ride your

bicycle on the platform, stairs, or escalators. ³ When boarding, be careful when crossing the gap between the platform and train. ³ Stand clear of the train doors; touching them or leaning on them could obstruct their movement. ³ Never climb railroad vehicles or walk on the tracks. ³ Be mindful of lowered crossing gates. Never try to beat the train by going around the gates. Instead, wait for them to rise after the train passes. ³ As a pedestrian, look and listen for trains in all directions. =

PEDESTRIAN SCRAMBLES

The Three Stages of Pedestrian Scrambles and How to Use Them:

1

2

Green lights for northbound and southbound drivers. Pedestrians wait to cross, making right-hand turns for drivers safer.

3

Green lights for eastbound and westbound drivers. Pedestrians continue to wait while vehicles flow through the intersection.

Do not start crossing if red hand is flashing or solid.

Drivers stop in all directions. Pedestrians and bicyclists can safely cross the intersection in any direction.

Start crossing when the walking person is lit.

Bike Signal/Green: Cyclists ride across when the bicycle-specific traffic light lights up with a green bike symbol.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CANNABIS Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal and increases your risk of getting into a car crash. If you smoke or vape cannabis, you may feel the effects right away, but it can take between 30 minutes and two hours to feel the effects of edibles. If you eat too much too fast, you are at higher risk for poisoning. Cannabis affects children more strongly than

adults. Children are at higher risk for poisoning from cannabis, especially with edibles. Protect your children and pets. Store all cannabis products in a locked area. Make sure children cannot see or reach the locked area. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant soon, you should not use cannabis. Consumption of marijuana in public, driving

under the influence of marijuana, and the purchase or consumption of cannabis by people under age 21 are all illegal in the state of California. For more information, visit cdph.ca.gov/ programs/do/letstalkcannabis/pages/ responsibleuse.aspx. SOURCE: CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

Ocean Front Walk, home of the Original Muscle Beach, still flexes its charm with a collection of rings, parallel bars, and balance bars plied by bodybuilders, yogis, and other assorted sun-worshippers. Bikes, skateboards, and even hoverboards drift down the Marvin Braude Bike Trail in an aimless procession of fun. proclaimed that all the world is a stage—and Santa Monica has a few particularly notable venues, each with its own personality, where audiences enjoy live professional theater as well as musical performances that range from jazz and world music to symphonies and opera. THE ELI AND EDYTHE BROAD STAGE, part of the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this season. The intimate 500-seat main theater continues to present new and classic dramas, concerts by virtuoso musicians in all genres, as well as dance performances, arts presentations, and lectures by thought leaders. The 100-seat black-box venue—called The Edye— hosts innovative works, emerging artists, a popular improv series, and poetry and play readings, among other programming. 1310 11th St.,

The best time of year to learn to surf is summer, when waves are smaller and the weather is warm.

BALANCING ACTS Catch the rides of endless summer. BY M AT T V I L L A N O

Try to go surfing in the early morning, when there are fewer people and better conditions. Winds off the coast of Santa Monica State Beach usually pick up around 10 a.m.

Watch for flags designating non-surf areas.

Skateboarding on sidewalks is against the law, so keep your wheels in hand until you get to the skate park (see “Ticket to Ride,” opposite), where participants must register, buy a pass, and wear safety gear.

Gear up for both surfing and skating at B AY S T R E E T B O A R D S (3216 Santa Monica Blvd., 310-310-2485, baystreetboards.com), where brothers Sante and Galeazzo Bentivoglio team up to equip their two favorite sports. Some brands date back to the early 1970s; others were just launched last year. “Skateboarding for me really began in Santa Monica at Douglas Park,” says Sante. “It was a great jump-off point.”

WHERE MAGIC RESIDES SANTA MONICA IS THE PERFECT base from which to see Los Angeles– area theme parks. Consult with your hotel staff to arrange for a visit to these local wonderlands. Ever since a certain mouse set up house in Anaheim back in 1955, fans have flocked to Disneyland. Today, the Magic Kingdom complex encompasses the original park as well as Disney California Adventure Park. The magic continues at Universal Studios HollywoodSM, where today’s blockbuster films are still made on the studio back lot. Topping the list of recently added rides and attractions is The Wizarding World of Harry PotterTM. At Six Flags Magic Mountain, more than a dozen roller coasters carry on the magical theme as they speed along in seeming defiance of physics. Among the thrill rides at the ready is X2, a 5-D roller coaster that spins the cars carrying riders independently on their own axis in a 360-degree arc as they careen around the track. On the site where the eponymous preserves originated, Knott’s Berry Farm puts a magical spin on the history of the American Northwest with attractions like its Wild West Stunt Show and Native American–inspired, special effects–enhanced Mystery Lodge experience. Opening in summer 2018 is its 13th roller coaster, The Hang Time, featuring a 150-foot-high midair suspension, five inversions, and a 96-degree beyond-vertical drop.

About four miles up PCH is the turnoff to the Getty Villa, the J. Paul Getty Museum’s sister location, where a replica of the Villa dei Papiri, a Roman country house buried in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D., houses more than 44,000 Etruscan, Greek, and Roman antiquities from 6,000 B.C. to 600 A.D. Set in a canyon with a view of the Pacific, the tranquil villa grounds include four authentic gardens with fountains, arbors, and reflecting pools. A renovation completed in spring 2018 restored the villa, expanded and redesigned galleries, and reorganized antiquities chronologically for a more global perspective of the ancient world. Though he’s a Santa Monica newcomer, former Chicago chef Dave Beran already has a few neighborhood favorites.

On his Twitter page, Beran offers a six-word bio: “I run, I bike, I cook.” With 16-hour days in the kitchen, he has little chance for much else. Still, he’s developed a deep fondness for these local spots. DAVE BERAN is cooking some of the most inventive and stunning food to be found anywhere in the country— or the world, for that matter—at his new restaurant, Dialogue, on Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade. With just 18 seats in an intimate 800-square-foot space and a single 20-course tasting menu ($175–$210) served each evening, it’s an opportunity to get up close to the 36-year-old chef, who was previously revered in Chicago culinary circles. While working at the Michelin three-star Alinea and later at Next, he earned a James Beard Award and was named one of America’s Best New Chefs by Food & Wine magazine. Beran could have opened Dialogue anywhere, but Santa Monica seemed “like a really good place to put in an elevated, fine-dining restaurant,” he says. “We wanted to become part of the neighborhood, and this felt like a cool little community, though it’s part of a larger city.”

“I’m at the market every Wednesday and Saturday. With a menu that changes with the seasons, we really rely on local farmers. We had a simple dish on a recent menu called Memories of a Tomato Salad that was composed of both fermented tomato and fresh tomato. We have another dish that features roses, and those come from the farmers market, too. One of my favorite farmers is Laura Ramirez of JJ’s Lone Daughter Ranch. Everything she has—citrus, avocados, persimmons—is just amazing.”

AFFEINATED, FERMENTED, SHAKEN, OR STIRRED—If you can pour it into a glass, mug, or flute, Santa Monica has it, expertly concocted by baristas, bartenders, or juice-ologists who take their craft seriously.
