PASADENA PLAYHOUSE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DANNY FELDMAN UNDERSCORES IMPORTANCE OF THEATER
BY MALINA SAVAL
Designated as the O fficial State Theater of California and awarded the 2023 Regional Theatre Tony Award, the Pasadena Playhouse is proud to conclude its 2023-2024 season this summer with the Tony Award-winning musical Jelly’s Last Jam
Danny Feldman, the producing artistic director of this prestigious performing arts center, has been with the theater since 2016. He previously served as the executive director of the LAByrinth Theater Company in New York City. Per Feldman, who grew up in LA’s San Fernando Valley and attended shows at the Pasadena Playhouse as a child, theater provides both adults and children “an empathy-building” experience that cannot be matched by whatever they see on film, TV, or the internet.
“My love for theater, and particularly musicals, came from having the opportunity to go see it as a kid,” says Feldman. “Even just in terms of seeing the world with possibility and wonder and the playfulness of it all—the theater is so important. And our kids today are not having the same experience that many of us were privileged to have. Someone recently said to me, ‘Nobody digests information anymore.’ All of us—and I get sucked into this, too—we’re all in this instant fast thing.”
Time Play
BRINGING
KIDS TO THE THEATER IS RADICALLY IMPORTANT TO ME, AND IT’S RADICALLY IMPORTANT TO THEATER MAKERS AT THE PASADENA PLAYHOUSE.”
Though he notes that theater certainly can’t solve all the world’s problems, it has a part to play. “We’re sitting on top of a secret,” he says. “We’re sitting on top of the idea that it’s a bold thing to ask people today to come sit in a room together with strangers and tune out the world and have a collective experience for 90 minutes.”
To that end, Feldman has prioritized youth and family programming, serving students within the Pasadena Unified School District. Over 6,000 kids saw Pasadena Playhouse’s production of Into the Woods this past year.
“It’s our future audience. It’s our future ticket buyers. But more importantly, it’s the future of our country and the future of our community,” says Feldman. “When faced with challenges or problems, we want people who are able to attack these challenges creatively and innovatively. Bringing kids to the theater is radically important to me, and it’s radically important to theater makers at the Pasadena Playhouse.” pasadenaplayhouse.org

HOME TO MORE THAN 600 RESTAURANTS, A VIBRANT NIGHTLIFE, AND LOTS OF SWEET SUMMER TREATS
Home to over 600 restaurants, a vibrant nightlife, and an array of sweet treats, Pasadena is a foodie town filled with exhilarating flavors. The endless options can be overwhelming, so we asked longtime Pasadena resident and senior editor of Eater LA, Cathy Chaplin to share her expertise on the local culinary scene.
“In the past decade, Pasadena’s dining scene has grown tremendously to include longtime stalwarts and an impressive wave of newcomers that make the city a compelling neighborhood to dine in for locals and visitors alike,” says Chaplin.
To get a sense of the vast options available, Chaplin recommends several places including Super Burger, a local staple with skyhigh cheeseburgers prepared in true California fashion with fresh, traditional ingredients; the beloved Armenian and Georgian bakery, Old Sassoon Bakery, revered for its Khachapuri breakfast special; Pasadena Fish Market for its incredible Jamaican cooking and expertly fried seafood including well-spiced beef patties and oxtails over rice and peas; and Colette in Hastings Ranch, a Cantoneseinfluenced restaurant serving rare and unforgettable dishes including stir-fried lobster with sticky rice and crispy chicken stuffed with shrimp paste.

CHEF BRET THOMPSON BRINGS THE SPIRIT OF BAJA CALIFORNIA SEAFOOD TO OLD PASADENA
BY STEVE CHAGOLLAN
The ocean-to-table sensibility that fuels Pez Coastal Kitchen (PCK), the recently opened seafoodforward emporium in Old Pasadena, is very much an outgrowth of executive chef/co-owner Bret Thompson’s boyhood experiences sur fing, boating, and fishing off he coasts of San Pedro and Baja, California.
“My uncle bought a house in Loreto, Mexico. It’s on Baja near La Paz, and we’ve been going there the last 20 years, fishing for dorado and diving for scallops and just really getting into nature,” says Thompson, whose partner in life and business is wife Lucy ThompsonRamirez.
Ten years ago, they opened Pez Cantina in Bunker Hill, inspired by Thompson-Ramirez’s Mexican roots in Guanajuato, and Thompson’s trips to the gulf side of the Baja peninsula. There, he would catch, fillet, and consume fish straight out of the ocean. When the opportunity arose to take on a second place—a 5,000-square-foot building on a fashionable corner of North Raymond Street and Union Avenue — they took the plunge.
Instead of replicating Pez Cantina’s elevated mariscos concept, Thompson aims to create “seasonal California cuisine in a super-nuanced way” at PCK. He describes this second restaurant as a grand dining space, which underwent a $1.5 million renovation, as “an American
Along Coasting
Seafood House with influences from my time in Europe and the Middle East.”
That’s why you’ll see an avocado labneh—a silky strained yogurt common in Lebanon and Israel—form the foundation of an appetizer of bluefin tuna, perfectly al dente green beans and oyster mushrooms lightly dressed with a truffle-lime vinaigrette. Or a heavenly filet of Pacific sea bass cradled over Meyer lemon risotto with a seafood “Bolognese.” Both restaurants feature whole-fried fish. At Pez Cantina, it’s perched on a wooden platform like an edible trophy.
Discerning diners sometimes lean toward seafood because it’s not something they’ll normally cook at home, and its health properties make it seem relatively guilt-free. “People are intimidated by making seafood,” Thompson says. “It’s a little bit more subtle and delicate than [other proteins]. As I get older, I eat less red meat and I love eating seafood. It’s a combination of me wanting to cook that way just from a health standpoint, and just having fun with all the different varieties.” pezcantina.com

PERRY BENNETT HAS BEEN BREAKING BREAD WITH PASADENANS SINCE 2004
BY MALINA SAVAL
Perry’s Joint owner Perry Bennett has been “taking sandwiches to the next level” since he was a kid growing up in West Philadelphia.
“My parents were in the food industry,” says Bennett. “They had food trucks, they had a cheesesteak shop, they had a fish and chips restaurant. My brother and I were always making stuff.”
The youngest of eight children, Bennett studied psychology at San Francisco City College. Those courses turned out to be useful not only in the classroom, but in the kitchen.
“It was a turning point in my life,” he says. “The study of the human mind and how you feel about yourself and others—all that plays a part in how you interact and have an impact on others. Working in the restaurant industry and talking to people and having good relationships with people, I wanted to implement that more into my everyday life and in my business.”
At 22, Bennett launched his first eatery in San Francisco, but after he and his wife had children, they decided to move to Southern California. Perry’s Joint, a gourmet sandwich shop serving up menu items such as “The Big City” (a hot dog with chili and cheese) and
The Sandwich
Man
“The Max Roast” (roast beef, mustard, mayo, lettuce and tomato), opened its doors on Lincoln Avenue in 2004. A s econd location opened in Sierra Madre. Up next is a third locale on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Orange Grove Boulevard.
“In the restaurant industry, or any industry really, if you’re going to win, you have to be a pioneer,” says Bennett. “I know there are going to be big changes in Pasadena w ithin the next 10 to 15 years, but I believe in the area, and I want to be a part of what I believe is going to grow.”
Moreover, Bennett is investing not only in his future, but in that of local community members, including the students at John Muir High School, a few short blocks from Perry’s Joint. Some of the restaurant’s most devoted customers are the students who stop by to grab a sandwich and a soda after school. Once a year, Bennett “donates 100% of profits earned” to a college scholarship fund for deserving and underserved students.
“Every year we raise between $5,500 and $7,500, sometimes more,” says Bennett. “And that’s been happening for close to 15 years.
“When I first came to the [Lincoln Avenue] area, there wasn’t much here,” he adds. “There was a gym and a McDonald’s. A lot of these buildings were still boarded up, and what really sustained me were the kids. They were the ones who helped me keep the restaurant doors open. As I grew, I wanted to find a way to support them, just like they support me.” perrysjoint.com

WHERE TO RELAX AND MINGLE WITH A QUALITY
IMBIBE
The nightlife in Pasadena is buzzing with bars that serve craft brews, cocktails, and wines. Farley Elliot, former senior editor at Eater LA, loves “an Old Pasadena haunt for a night out, like sitting at the bar at Stoney Point with all the regulars, popping some fritto misto and sipping on a cold martini. Widely hailed Bar Chelou serves up big things in the wine and craft cocktail space, though it’s hard to beat 1886 Bar at TheRaymond for mixed drinks. At Lucky Baldwin’s or neighboring King’s Row Gastropub, the patio is lively, and the warm air feels just right.” For cocktails, food, and karaoke nights, head to The Mixx.

That Could The Little Taco Stand
SINCE 1976, YUCA’S HAS SERVED UP HIGH-QUALITY, TRADITIONAL MEXICAN STREET FOOD
BY MALINA SAVAL
Growing up in Los Angeles with parents who worked in the restaurant industry, Dora Herrera swore she “would never wear pink and never cook.”
It was Herrera’s collegiate years at Brown University, where she majored in Latin American Studies and Spanish Literature, that led her back to the kitchen.
“I remember being in a bit of culture shock,” she says of those early days at Brown. “I left LA and it was 90 degrees and I got to Providence and it was 18 degrees and snowing. And the food was so bad.”
After graduation, she returned to LA to help her mom at Yuca’s in Los Feliz, the now-famed family-owned Mexican taco stand. “I told myself I’d just work there until I figured out what I wanted to do for a career.” Soon, Herrera realized she loved working in the food industry. “I decided, I’m just going to continue doing this,” she says.
Decades later, Herrera is joyfully carrying on the family tradition by running its two Yucatan-inspired, James Beard award-winning eateries
“We opened our first location in 1976, so we’ve been around 48 years,” says Herrera, whose family hails from Merida, Yucatan’s capital. The Pasadena location opened in 2017.
The Pasadena location is small in size but big on taste. Angelinos flock by the thousands to enjoy Yuca’s acclaimed tacos, tortas and Yucatan-style burritos—all inspired by the recipes served in the Herrera family kitchen in Merida.
“We felt like we had to educate everyone on what true Mexican food was—as opposed to just five pounds of cheese on top of the lettuce,” says Herrera. “My brother actually came up with the idea of standing on the sidewalk and waving cars over and saying, ‘Hey, we just opened, and the food is delicious! Pull into the parking lot and if you don’t like it, we will double your money back.’ People started falling in love with my mom and her cooking. She has the biggest heart. Ever since, people have lined up for food.” yucasla.com

AMARA CAFÉ BRINGS A TASTE OF VENEZUELA TO PASADENA
BY SARA SMOLA
FSweet Success Amara Barroeta’s
rom a young age, Venezuela-born Amara Barroeta nourished a passion for food, which played a central role in her upbringing. The Amara Café owner’s abuelitas both believed food was the “cure for any aches of the body and soul,” and according to Barroeta, “If a friend was going through a difficult time, you’d invite them over for an afternoon of coffee, churros, and chocolate to find comfort.”
Today, Pasadena residents can taste the same comfort and care in Amara Café’s homemade Venezuelan dishes Barroeta grew up with, albeit crafted with a more modern approach. Opened in 2012, the Raymond Avenue café is a popular locale known for savory options like arepas, sandwiches, and cachapas (openface Venezuelan-style corn pancakes), as well as its thick drinking chocolate, ideally complemented by crispy churros.
Although Amara Café is now a Pasadena success story, its beginning wasn’t without challenges. “It took some time to let people know we were here,” says Barroeta. “It was a lot of grassroots work for me. I went around the community to introduce myself, donating food, and trying to get my name out.” With perseverance and hard work, Barroeta discovered her recipe for success through connecting with the community and “a lot of
resilience,” noting “it’s easy to get defeated but learn from it, try again, and keep improving.”
To give back to the community, Barroeta shares her entrepreneurial experience by taking part in local events such as TEDxPasadena, Friday Coffee Meetup, and Refugee Forum of Los Angeles, and was the keynote speaker at Junior League of Pasadena’s 2024 Simply Speaking fundraiser. While Barroeta is eager to inspire anyone to pursue their dream, she is especially passionate about helping women succeed and feels “supporting other women is key for a better society.”
This year, the café is celebrating its twelfth anniversary and Barroeta is looking ahead to the future, dreaming of possibilities that include expanding Amara Café with empanada and coffee stands around town, as well as selling her hot chocolate through supermarkets and local retailers.

SONGS ABOUT PASADENA
Pasadena is a sensationally musical place, where the young Van Halen band sent shock waves through Pasadena’s backyard party scene in the 1970s, before taking the stage at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in 1977 (then the Pasadena Convention Center) and becoming rock superstars. Rick Spring field found inspiration for his 1981 hit “Jessie’s Girl” from someone he met in Pasadena, and several artists, including Dustin Lynch, Quinn XCII and Jan and Dean wrote songs about the city.
