Dr. Phuong “Phoenix” Nguyen is a boardcertified gastroenterologist who is a nationally recognized expert in the field of Gastroenterology and one of Southern California’s most experienced physicians in using endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) to improve diagnosis and treatment. Her expertise includes minimally invasive approaches to the treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), bile duct diseases (ERCP), fecal incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction, obesity management and other advanced procedures.
Dr. Nguyen graduated from the David Geffen School of Medicine of UCLA in 1990. She completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California, Irvine, and residency in internal medicine at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Nguyen is passionate about helping patients suffering from GERD, a chronic digestive disease that occurs when the liquid of the stomach travels back up into the esophagus, which can lead to tissue damage. While maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet can help reduce the risk of GERD, it is also treatable by medications and sometimes surgery such as the Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication or TIF procedure for reflux.
“GERD symptoms might be obvious or can be silent. GERD is a mechanical failure of lower esophagus that when weakened over time can cause acid reflux,” explains Dr. Nguyen.
“Patients suffering from GERD may experience heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, and other troubling symptoms that negatively impact quality of life.”
Known for her expertise, dedication and quality of care, Dr. Nguyen adds, “It is a great honor to be recognized as a Physician of Excellence in the GI space, as it is truly a passion of mine. It is a privilege to have the pleasure of treating so many patients who trust me and count on me for their healthcare.”
Dr. Nguyen has hospital privileges at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Providence St. Jude Medical Center and Mission Hospital.

Many questions come with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Choosing a course of treatment is intrinsically personal, and learning as much as possible about options is vital. Highly recommended by Owner & Medical Director of Newport Diagnostic Center (NDC) Hazem H. Chehabi, MD, FACNM, FACNP is the practice’s CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System from Accuray Incorporated. One of the primary reasons CyberKnife is NDC’s treatment of choice is its excellent long-term cancer control.
CyberKnife has a myriad of benefits, among them a reduced incidence of sexual, urinary, and bowel function side effects. An outpatient treatment, CyberKnife is non-invasive with no cutting or anesthesia required. This is an excellent option for patients with inoperable or surgically complex tumors. CyberKnife provides pinpoint precision accuracy and is pain-free, with little to no side effects. Most patients continue regular activity during and after treatment with no
downtime needed. The CyberKnife procedure is generally covered by most insurance plans as well as Medicare.
The CyberKnife treats cancerous and benign (noncancerous) tumors of the brain, head & neck, lung, breast, spine, pancreas and prostate. The CyberKnife treatment process generally requires six simple steps from start to finish: evaluation, fiducial placement for targeted treatments, imaging, planning/scheduling, treatment, and recovery. Treatments involve four to five CyberKnife sessions spread across one to two weeks versus the months required in most conventional radiation therapy.
For prostate patients, CyberKnife treatments take place over five days. With the exception of potentially minimal fatigue on treatment days, there’s no recovery time required, and very few patients experience side effects.
CyberKnife’s design allows for pinpoint accuracy so the treating physician can tailor treatments specific to the patient
and tumor(s). During sessions, X-rays monitor the tumor(s) location to track movement that may occur due to bodily function.
Because of its accuracy in targeting the tumor, in essence “painting it,” CyberKnife minimizes radiation exposure to sensitive healthy tissue and organs surrounding tumors.
Three months after CyberKnife treatments, patients’ prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels are tested to serve as a progress report on tumor response.
