THE DISH Greg Nagel chats with Anaheim’s own Shachi Mehra of Adya.

After handily winning the hit Food Network show, “Chopped,” and being voted the Rising Star Chef at the 2019 Golden Foodie Awards, there’s no hotter chef right now in Anaheim, neither figuratively nor stylistically, than Mehra. BEGINNINGS “I was born in India then grew up in New Jersey, where I went to medical school, until I found my real passion: cooking,” Mehra said. At the time, she worked two jobs, one in a doctor’s office, the other in a kitchen, sometimes driving over 100 miles a day between them. “I knew I had found what I was ‘supposed’ to do when I stepped in a kitchen,” she continued. After a few restaurant jobs on the East Coast, Mehra took a year off to travel the world, including a return to her birthplace in India, before landing in the Bay Area. Then, she hit it big when she opened Newport Beach’s Tamarind of London as executive chef. As excited as she was, “I always wanted to open something on my own,” she confessed. CREATING ADYA “When we first saw the Packing House, it wasn’t at all like it is today,” said Mehra, referring to Adya’s first location prior to renovation. “We had a good feeling about what it could grow to be, and we really saw Adya flourishing there. The sense of community, love, and real support from the people of Anaheim has been amazing.” Mehra’s dishes at Adya are more than a modern take on Mumbai-style street food. They add vibrance to the Packing House with dishes like gooey goat cheese naan, fresh curries, and hearty pav sandwiches, which roughly translate to sloppy Joes. There’s even a secret menu item: the chicken tikka masala burrito that’s as satisfying as it sounds. LEARN FROM THE BEST “My cooking classes range from Curry 101, to The Perfect Cup of Chai, to Holiday Entertaining. Each class includes the interactive demonstration, recipes to take home, a full lunch, and beverage of choice (wine, beer, lassi, or chai).” Regular classes are open to the public with a reservation and take place on the covered boxcar patio outside Adya. RECOMMENDED ORDER “The shrimp curry. Ours is a coconut-based curry with fennel, curry leaves, and ginger. Folks who try it, love it. It’s warm, flavorful, and overall wonderful, without being too spicy.” FAVORITE ANAHEIM EATS “I always take friends from out of town to The Ranch Restaurant. It’s a beautiful space and the Rossi brothers, who oversee the menu, are always on point. Their care for the product shows up in every dish. The restaurant is known for steaks, but I love their vegetable and seafood dishes, and you absolutely must save room for dessert!”

AZULES COFFEE & ICE CREAM

MAMA COZZA’S

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD Our diverse local population translates to food options in a variety of global cuisines, all of which are simply too numerous to name here. Rather than let the options overwhelm you, visit one of these restaurants when you find yourself craving something home-cooked and authentic. Bonus: they’re also reasonably priced and will fill you up, with leftovers to spare.

Asian

THUYEN VIEN is Anaheim’s completely vegan Vietnamese restaurant, where soy “meats” and an abundance of vegetables star in traditional soup, salad, and curry recipes. If you find yourself craving a midafternoon pick-me-up, head to AZULES COFFEE & ICE CREAM for horchata- and cinnamon-flavored coffees, ice cream sandwiches made with conchas or churro “buns,” or a slice of flan. Oh, and if you have something to celebrate, their cakes are something else. 732 N. Anaheim Blvd., Anaheim; 714495-3450; azulescoffee.com EL FAROLITO, or “the little lighthouse,” is a beacon in a sea of choices, but few others have been around for over 40 years under the same trusted family ownership. Parking can be a challenge, so it’s worth taking a rideshare service for the reasonable prices, generous portions, and variety on the menu. Plus, the margaritas will go down that much easier. 201 S. Middle Eastern

OLIVE TREE RESTAURANT is a “Little Arabia” institution, highly recommended for lamb shanks with meat that falls off the bone. ANGELS BASEBALL

THE HOME TEAMS Both of Anaheim’s professional sports teams got their start in the entertainment industry. The Angels arrived in 1961, founded by “Singing Cowboy” Gene Autry when Major League Baseball’s American League (AL) expanded west. And you might remember the 1992 Disney film, “The Mighty Ducks,” which inspired The Walt Disney Company to create the real-life National Hockey League (NHL) team now known simply as the Anaheim Ducks. These days, both teams hold their own as part of the second-largest sports market in the country. See them at the stadium, arena, or any of the nearby sports bars.

2019 YONEX US OPEN FINALS

TOKYO 2020 Visit Anaheim’s partnerships with USA Water Polo, USA Badminton, and USA Volleyball make Anaheim a home base for teams preparing to go for gold in Japan during the 2020 Summer Olympics. Meanwhile, the Anaheim Convention Center hosts a junior championship match. USA BADMINTON USA Badminton selected Anaheim as its headquarters after a competitive nationwide search in 2016. With assistance from Visit Anaheim, they secured office space and the use of eight courts at American Sports Centers through the end of 2024. Beiwen Zhang, currently ranked 11th in the world in women’s singles, is likely to be the team’s best chance for their first medal since badminton became an Olympic sport in 1992.

USA VOLLEYBALL Anaheim is the official host city—and American Sports Centers the home training facility—of USA men’s and women’s national teams. Once qualified, they’ll compete in indoor, beach, and sitting volleyball in the Olympic and Paralympic games. Volleyball was first added to the Olympics agenda in Tokyo in 1964; the teams look forward to coming full circle, now with 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals to their name.

USA WATER POLO Based in Irvine, the USA women’s national team is ranked first in the world and will defend two consecutive Olympic gold medals in Tokyo. Going into the Summer Games, the world will be watching the young USA men’s team for a rebound after poor performances at the Rio Games and 2017 world championships.

USA FENCING This is the first year that all six weapons—men’s and women’s epee, foil, and saber—will be included in both individual and team competitions, and Team USA should have contenders in each category. But you don’t need to travel to Tokyo to see world-class fencing this year: Anaheim Convention Center will host the 2020 USA Fencing Youth Regional Championships, March 13 through 15.

Enter the cockpit through the same starboard airlock used by Han Solo and Chewbacca in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Then, take the controls as a pilot, gunner, or fl ight engineer as you embark on the ride, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run.

Rise up and Fight

Whether you claim your allegiance to a side within the Play Disney Parks app or purchase merchandise from First Order Cargo or Resistance Supply, the good guys are still the ragtag group under General Leia Organa’s leadership. Explore the vast outpost alongside Rey, Chewbacca, and newcomer Resistance spy Vi Moradi. First introduced in Delilah S. Dawson’s 2017 book, “Phasma,” she reappeared in the follow-up, “Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire,” and is one of the land’s main characters. Guests brave enough to take on Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will enter a massive building that houses two full-sized AT-AT

walkers, a Star Destroyer hangar bay, and a TIE fighter—not to mention the garrison of stormtroopers who will intercept your task force. Walt Disney Imagineering has outdone itself with multiple ride systems, immersive simulations, and reactive drones to put guests at the center of a battle aboard a Star Destroyer.

Batuuan for a Day

Become part of the story when employees who call themselves “inhabitants of Batuu” greet you with local slang. Reply with the phrase, “bright suns” (good morning), or “rising moons” (good evening). Then use your “data pad” (cell phone) to interact with the land via the Play Disney Parks app. Reserve a table at Oga’s Cantina*, where you can try the same frosty blue milk that Luke Skywalker fi rst tasted in “Star Wars: A New Hope.” Later, peruse Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities at the Black Spire Outpost Marketplace for a selection of otherworldly souvenirs; for an additional cost, try your hand at building a custom Jedi lightsaber at Savi’s workshop or a mechanical pal at the Droid Depot*. *Requires 60-day advance reservation.

ANAHEIM CONVENTION CENTER & ARENA

ANAHEIM BY DESIGN Anaheim may not be known beyond city limits for its architecture, but these buildings reveal a unique history. CARNEGIE LIBRARY COMPLETED: 1908 THE ARCHITECT: John C. Austin ALSO DESIGNED: Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and Griffith Park Observatory THEN: Andrew Cargenie funded the construction of five public libraries in Orange County after the turn of the century, but only this one remains standing. The building fulfilled its role as a public library until 1963, then served as an office for the City of Anaheim. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. NOW: The Carnegie Library is an annex of Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center. Admission is complimentary for its permanent historical display of 19th-century agricultural tools, fossils, and memorabilia from the early days of Disneyland® Park and Angel Stadium of Anaheim. VISIT: 241 S. Anaheim Blvd., Anaheim; 714-956-8936; muzeo.org

ANAHEIM CONVENTION CENTER & ARENA COMPLETED: 1967 THE ARCHITECTS: Adrian Wilson and Associates ALSO DESIGNED: The now-demolished dome of the Las Vegas Convention Center THEN: Designed in the spaceshipinspired “Googie” style popular in the Southland at the time, the structure was futuristic not only aesthetically, but for its built-in amenities. The venue possessed 100,000 square feet of exhibition space, a huge parking lot, and the largest door available to convention attendees in California, at 40 feet wide by 25 feet tall. NOW: ACC North, the Center’s most recent expansion, opened in Sept. 2017. The $190 million addition includes a 10,000-square-foot balcony that overlooks Disney California Adventure® Park. From the outdoor Grand Plaza courtyard area, the complementary designs of ACC North and the original building are striking, with a winding walkway made to resemble the Santa Ana River. VISIT: 800 W. Katella Ave., Anaheim, 714-765-8950, visitanaheim.org/ meetings

ANAHEIM ICE

ANAHEIM ICE COMPLETED: 1995 THE ARCHITECT: Frank Gehry ALSO DESIGNED: The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, L.A.’s Walt Disney Concert Hall THEN: Commissioned as a practice rink for the Anaheim Ducks by thenowner The Walt Disney Company, this sculptural outlier was initially christened Disney Ice. The facility has been said to resemble midcentury military-surplus quonset huts; its inverted nautical shape also feels continuous with the Walt Disney Concert Hall. But the nostalgic wood interior, baring crossed beams and braces, probably recalls Gehry’s childhood in Toronto, Canada. NOW: Henry Samueli—Broadcom, Inc. chairman and co-founder and a wellknown Orange County philanthropist— purchased The Ducks in 2005 and Anaheim Ice along with it. Now that his team trains in Irvine, Anaheim Ice is booked solid with public skating, youth programs, tournaments, and more. VISIT: 300 W. Lincoln Ave., Anaheim; 714-535-7465; anaheimice.therinks.com

ANAHEIM REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION INTERMODAL CENTER (ARTIC ) COMPLETED: 2014 THE ARCHITECT: Global architectural firm, HOK ALSO DESIGNED: Atlanta’s MercedesBenz Stadium THEN: Designers planned for nothing less than to usher in “a new era of public transit.” Their LEED Platinumcertified landmark promotes natural ventilation and energy efficiency, while advanced modeling helped to determine its diagrid structure and inflatable, LED-lit siding. NOW: ARTIC is a hub for Amtrak, Metrolink, OCTA bus service, Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART), Megabus, and Greyhound; in the future, it will accommodate California’s high-speed rail system. The forward-thinking, holistic design left plenty of room for retail, Wi-Fi, charging stations, parking, bike racks, lockers, community space, and specialty dining. VISIT: 2626 E. THE HILBERT MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA ART

QUITE THE CALIFORNIA SCENE Disneyland® Resort isn’t the only place to admire works by Disney artists during your stay. The Hilbert Museum of California Art in nearby Orange—a five-minute, $2.50 train ride from ARTIC—is the first museum that is wholly dedicated to the mid20th century art of California Scene and California representational painting. The museum’s permanent collection and rotating exhibits are culled from the extensive, $7 million personal collection Mark and Janet Hilbert gifted to Chapman University in 2014. Many of its noteworthy artists worked for Disney

56 / VISITANAHEIM.ORG

Studios, including Eyvind Earle, Mary Blair, Ralph Hulett, Phil Paradise, and Phil Dike. Although their independent fine art was what originally intrigued the collectors, the Hilberts eventually did purchase their Disney concept paintings, sketches, and movie poster artwork as well. Together, the works paint a picture of Los Angeles during and after the Great Depression, when movie studios were among the few places still hiring. “The artists never got the credit they deserved for making American cinema what it was,” Mark Hilbert told The Orange County Register. Now, he’s helping to change that. Through May 2, see the exhibitions, “L.A. Area Scene Paintings” and “A Fine Romance: Images of Love in Classic American Illustration.” The museum recently announced plans to expand its space in order to accommodate more of its permanent collection, as well as more visitors, which already number over 100 per day. Admission is free. 167 N. Atchison St., Orange; 714-516-5880; hilbertmuseum.com

MORNING With only three days, try to see as much of the DISNEYLAND® RESORT as you can in one day. To enter Disneyland® Park right when it opens, be at the gates 45 minutes before then—check the park schedule in advance to find the exact time. Use the morning to check off all your must-do rides, like the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Space Mountain. Then, either proceed to the afternoon itinerary or, if you purchased Park Hopper® tickets, skip ahead to Day 4. AFTERNOON Break for lunch in the shade or see a live performance to get off your feet for awhile. Next up is STAR WARS: GALAXY’S EDGE, Disneyland® Park’s newest and largest land. Use the Disneyland app or a FastPass to plan for long lines at the newly-opened Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Leave plenty of time to locate Rey, Chewbacca, and Vi Moradi; sip an adult alien beverage or nonalcoholic blue milk at Oga’s Cantina; and select a souvenir from the bazaar-like Black Spire Outpost Marketplace. EVENING If you’re ready to head home for the night, Disneyland® Park’s fireworks can be seen from many vantage points throughout the city, including several hotels. Still going strong? Check the events schedule online to find colorful parades and other spectacular shows, or strategize by saving for last the areas that light up dramatically after dark, like Tomorrowland and Sleeping Beauty Castle. disneyland.disney.go.com

KNOTT’S BERRY FARM

DAY

2

MORNING Chances are, you came to Anaheim to experience the world’s greatest theme parks, so don’t stop before you visit Disney’s predecessor, KNOTT’S BERRY FARM. With unrivaled coasters like HangTime and Camp Snoopy, a land designed especially for young kids, it’s sure to satisfy any customer. knotts.com AFTERNOON Don’t skip lunch at Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant for the same recipe that first attracted crowds to the area back in 1934. Then, after the requisite 45 minute wait for digestion, let the kids unleash their wild sides at KNOTT’S SOAK CITY. 23 slides, a wave pool, lazy river, and interactive beach house for kids comprise O.C.’s largest water park. knotts.com/play/soak-city EVENING Back in Anaheim, you’ll want to keep dinner simple. Why not order takeout from one of the restaurants on p. 28 to eat in your suite? Or, stop by The Anaheim Hotel for a pie to go from The Pizza Press and a cocktail in the lobby bar while you wait. theanaheimhotel. com, thepizzapress.com

DAY

3

MORNING By all means, sleep in. But we do recommend setting off for a scenic nature hike before the heat of the day. Choose between easy trails at OAK CANYON NATURE CENTER or SANTIAGO OAKS REGIONAL PARK and the moderately difficult loop at PETERS CANYON REGIONAL PARK. Trust us: you’ll want to build up an appetite for what’s coming next. anaheim.net, ocparks.com AFTERNOON In CENTER CITY, head straight to the Anaheim Packing House, a multi-level, open-plan warehouse stocked with food vendors in a variety of cuisines. After eating your fill, take FRAN (a free microtransit ride service you can call from the Center City app) or walk to Center Street Promenade. Mosey through Muzeo, Pop! Comics, and other unique storefronts. When you’re ready for dessert, go for a soft serve-filled “chimney cone” at House of Chimney Cakes, or refuel with a Groundwork coffee and unimaginably light pastries from Okayama Kobo Bakery. ctrcityanaheim.com EVENING Hop on ART, or Anaheim Resort Transit, to reach the final stop on the itinerary: PLATINUM TRIANGLE. Many new and established breweries can be found in this part of town, and stopping at one or two of them would make a fine segway to dinner at ZOV’S, a popular Mediterranean restaurant with an extensive menu. From there, it’s an easy walk to Angel Stadium or the Honda Center to see our pro teams play a home game. rideart.org, zovs.com, angels.com, anaheimducks.com

MORNING Your multi-day ticket doesn’t have to be used on consecutive days as long as you return to Disneyland® Resort within 13 days of your first visit. Why not have breakfast with Donald Duck and friends at Disney’s PCH Grill at Disney’s Paradise Pier® Hotel? AFTERNOON DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE® PARK carries the theme of its home state to epic proportions, from Cars Land’s colorful desert landscape to adventures under the sea with Crush, the talking sea turtle from “Finding Nemo” and “Finding Dory.” The eight-land theme park is famous for its Pixar storylines and characters, with attractions based on “Toy Story,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.” and more. EVENING With or without a park ticket, end the day with a whole new world of shopping, dining, and entertainment at the revitalized DOWNTOWN DISNEY® DISTRICT. Try on outfits inspired by guest trends and beloved characters at The Disney Dress Shop, share a viral CrazyShakeTM from New York City export Black Tap Craft Burgers & Shakes, and venture into The Void for a virtual reality walk-through adventure. disneyland. disney.go.com

MORNING This year, we’re embracing the staycation vibe—yep, even if you traveled thousands of miles to get here. Use our guide on p. 68 to choose your hotel wisely and enjoy it for more than just sleeping. After a morning workout at the fitness center, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, spend hours at the pool, and explore kids’ activities until everyone feels fully recharged. AFTERNOON Did we say fully recharged? Don’t let the relaxation end there. This is your day to book a spa treatment—bonus points if you can make it to the appointment without leaving your hotel—or schedule a round of golf for the whole group at one of the nearby courses. EVENING As happy hour approaches, head to the Anaheim Packing District’s MAKE BUILDING. Order a brew inspired by underrated superheroes from Unsung Brewery or glass of Central Coast wine from the tap at Pali Wine Co. The two businesses share a landscaped patio with lots of seating areas. KNOTT’S BERRY FARM A SWEET SUCCESS STORY As one of the top ten most-visited theme parks in North America, Knott’s Berry Farm’s humble-pie beginnings make its present-day success that much sweeter. This year marks a full century since the Knott family first settled on their 20-acre plot on Highway 39, or Beach Boulevard, in Buena Park. To celebrate their centennial, we collected the park’s historic milestones into a ten-part timeline by the decades. 1920s: After moving onto his farm in 1920, Walter Knott helped a USDA employee revive several mysterious berry plants found on Mr. Boysen’s abandoned farm nearby. 1930s: A cross between a raspberry, blackberry, and loganberry, the boysenberry was the main ingredient of preserves and pies the Knotts sold at their roadside stand. When Cordelia Knott starting serving fried chicken dinners, customers kept on coming. 1940s: With wait times averaging several hours, Walter Knott brought entertainment to their customers. His Ghost Town was comprised of upcycled buildings from other Old West towns. 1950s: Taking his interest in American pioneer history a step further, Walter Knott purchased and restored the real silver mining ghost town of Calico, California. 1960s: It wasn’t until the late ’60s that the Knotts fenced their farm, began charging admission, and officially became an amusement park. 1970s: The family business had its ups and downs. Within the decade, Cordelia Knott passed away and the park’s first two roller coasters were built. 1980s: The family said goodbye to its 92-year-old patriarch, Walter Knott. Six acres of the park were set aside as Camp Snoopy, the first area of any amusement park designed solely for kids under the age of 12. 1990s: When Cedar Fair Entertainment Company acquired Knott’s Berry Farm, the park made its New York Stock Exchange debut. 2000s: Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant turned 75. 2010s: Introduced in 2018, HangTime remains the first dive coaster in California. Its brave riders experience gravity-defying inversions, midair suspensions, and the steepest drop statewide at a beyondvertical 96 degrees.
