OC SHOPPING GUIDE

South Coast Plaza

Shauna Jackson, one of the top OC stylists for destinations, gives the lowdown on how to find the quintessential OC look. Check out her tips for where to find surf style, luxury brands, vintage gear and more. While you might think of Southern California style as laid back—jeans, a tee and flip flops—the OC style would be more polished casual— jeans with heels. The perfect outfit for your Orange County visit would be layers—think jeans, a cool pair of sneakers, sweater, sunglasses and always sunscreen.

When looking to score a bargain on luxury brands, I always head to The Outlets at Orange (just 10 miles away from Buena Park). It's home to Off Saks, Nordstrom Rack, Last Call Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s— lots of spots for finding hidden little gems for the best price. South Coast Plaza is my go-to spot when I’m shopping for clients who want high-end premium brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermes. I’m not going to go to a department store, I’m going to go to South Coast Plaza where they have boutiques with the best selection. What I also love about South Coast Plaza is that it offers the element of “fast fashion” from stores like Zara and COS to bring a good mix of high-low price points. It’s also a great spot to shop for the kids as many of the stores offer their full kids’ line, like Gucci and Crewcuts from J.Crew. For a truly unique shopping experience, Lido Marina Village is the spot. You can shop at cool stores like Bailey44 and Cos Bar and then walk across the cobblestone street to grab a glass of wine and check out the boats in the marina. It’s just stunning.

Lido Village

A few fun spots for those looking to score a great vintage find would be Elsewhere Vintage in the Orange Circle and Vintage Row on Fourth Street in Long Beach.

Orange County is really all about the surf culture. Those who want to take home a bit of Orange County fashion should check out the surf shops in Huntington Beach on Main Street and at Pacific City. Grab a cool tee from Huntington Surf & Sport or a fun bikini from one of the little bikini shops to remember your visit to the OC.

RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT:

PORTO’S BAKERY & CAFÉ

The world-famous café attracts millions of visitors a year from around the world who not only come for their decadent pastries, freshly baked breads, authentic sandwiches and coffee creations but for their affordably priced menu items. But before opening Yelp’s #1 Restaurant in the Country, the Porto family can trace their humble beginnings back to 1960 in Manzanillo, Cuba. In order to provide for her family in Cuba, Rosa Porto launched a dangerous underground baking business to help support her three kids – Betty, Margarita and Raul Jr. The Porto family lived this way for a decade before they were finally approved to relocate to California with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and recipes in hand. With a dream for a better life, Rosa got straight to work and began baking her famous pastries from home with her kids. When their home could no longer accommodate the increased demand, they moved to a 300-square-foot bakery in Los Angeles. As word and popularity spread, they once again had to grow their bakery

AIntoxicating LITTLE SLICE OF HEAVEN aromas of specialty pastries and cakes fill the air in Buena Park as the highly anticipated, Porto’s Bakery & Café has settled into their fourth and only Orange County location.

and opened the first official location over 40 years ago. Rosa used her talents as a means of supporting her family and has turned Porto’s into one of the most unique family-owned businesses in Southern California. Even though Rosa is retired, visitors can still enjoy her famous potato balls, guava cheese rolls, cakes, empanadas, meat pies and authentic Cubano sandwiches served with fried plantains. Though the restaurant has grown over the years, not much else has changed. The Porto family still welcomes every visitor like they are part of the family and puts the same love and passion into every dish like their mother did in her home kitchen.
