West Hollywood—or “WeHo,” as it’s affectionately called— is a vibrant neighborhood located beside Hollywood at the eastern border of Beverly Hills in the heart of Los Angeles. With its hip and trendy vibe, strong sense of community, and colorful show-business history, these two square miles of shops, restaurants, clubs, and landmarks are a virtual feast for the senses. Wander the city from end to end to make the most of these iconic areas: The Sunset Strip is renowned for its legendary rock ’n’ roll history, eye-popping billboards, and exciting assortment of hip hotels, restaurants, and boutiques that dot the central thoroughfare. For visual and artistic inspiration, West Hollywood’s Design District delivers with a seemingly endless string of opportunities to experience the latest in premier design, art, fashion, and food. Santa Monica Boulevard is the cultural backbone of the city, connecting three zones, each with its own personality: the LGBTQ-historic west end, the retro-inspired mid-boulevard, and the Old Hollywood-influenced east end.

After decades of notoriety, the Sunset Strip continues to blaze its own path as a world-famous cultural landmark, setting trends in music, hotels, dining, and shopping. This most famous segment of Sunset Boulevard begins and ends in West Hollywood, and like the city it calls home, it’s constantly breaking new ground and reinventing itself. Though it’s often portrayed in movies (it was the setting for Sunset Boulevard, Almost Famous, and Rock of Ages, to name a few), nothing compares to experiencing the Strip up close and in person. Bordered on the west by Beverly Hills and on the east by Hollywood, the iconic mile-and-a-half stretch of road is lined with an array of world-class hotels, nightclubs, restaurants, shops, and spas. Over the years, the Sunset Strip has seen it all, starting with the seedy glitz of the 1920s, when Prohibition fueled the rise of nightclubs and speakeasies. At that time, West Hollywood was not yet an incorporated city, so the Strip was lightly policed, making it the perfect playground for the rebellious denizens of early Hollywood. By the 1940s, swanky nightclubs like Ciro’s, Sunset Trocadero, and Mocambo reigned supreme, attracting A-list celebrity clientele like Marilyn Monroe along with less savory characters like gangster Bugsy Siegel. In the 1960s, the Sunset Strip became a gathering place for the counterculture movement in Los Angeles. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison were fixtures. The Whisky a Go Go (whiskyagogo.com) introduced go-go dancers to the

U.S. and propelled The Doors—the club’s house band at the time—to fame and notoriety. The Strip continued to be a nucleus of punk rock and new wave music during the late 1970s and became ground zero for the colorful glam metal scene, hosting bands like Mötley Crüe, Guns N’ Roses, and Poison throughout the 1980s. Meanwhile, another entertainment renaissance was taking place on the Strip as young standup performers like David Letterman, Andy Kaufman, and The Smothers Brothers regaled audiences with their routines at The Comedy Store (thecomedystore.com), forging a path for comic innovation that continues to this day. Today the Strip continues to launch new artists of all kinds and attract crowds to legendary venues like the Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy Theatre (theroxy.com), which anchor a nightlife-rich neighborhood of bars, many of which are tucked into the area’s legendary hotels. To honor tradition, stop at The Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel (sunset towerhotel.com) and the open-air Skybar (mondrianlos angeles.com) that overlooks the outdoor pool at the ultra-chic Mondrian Los Angeles. For a newer Strip offering, stretch out at the stunning, glass-encased lounge atop the recently launched 1 Hotel West Hollywood (1hotels.com/west-hollywood). Located at the base of the Hollywood Hills and lauded for its savvy marriage of luxury and environmental responsibility, the hotel houses 235 rooms and 50 suites, many of which feature those coveted L.A. skyline views. Poised on the cusp of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, the hotel boasts a six-treatment-room spa in addition to its 190 guest rooms, 20 luxury residences, and an oh-so-Hollywood rooftop pool. If you’re ready to party with Hollywood’s hippest, head over to Blind Dragon (blinddragonla.com), where tikiinspired cocktails mix with karaoke, and Bootsy Bellows (hwoodgroup.com), a retro, burlesque-ish nightclub known for its bodacious party crowd. If you’ve just gotta move, the dance club 1OAK Los Angeles (1oakla.com) is the place to groove. When you’re ready to eat, the selection of dining options on the Strip ranges from the impertinently colorful rock ’n’ roll mainstay next door to The Roxy, Rainbow Bar & Grill (rainbowbarandgrill.com), to any of the cool, modern gustatory experiences at Innovative Dining Group’s (innovativedining.com) trio of restaurants: BOA Steakhouse, where premium cuts mesh with an award-winning wine list; Katana, a hip destination for Japanese comfort cuisine; and

ROKU, popular for its teppanyaki (iron griddle–prepared) Japanese dishes. With daylight, the late-night scene makes way for shopping. Expand your wardrobe with a visit to the 13,000-squarefoot location of Fred Segal (f redsegal.com), an iconic purveyor of chic, casual clothing for more than 50 years. Broaden your mind as you browse the floor-to-ceiling shelves at Book Soup (booksoup.com), frequently the site of highprofile author signings and book-loving celebrities. For some high-end retail therapy, pay a visit to the Strip’s Sunset Plaza (sunsetplaza.com), where you can shop while taking in the Southern California sunshine and spectacular city views, and even savor some alfresco dining at one of the center’s eateries. And if you run out of steam, no worries: You can indulge in some top-notch TLC with a massage or facial at Ole Henriksen Spa (olehenriksenspa.com). Nearly 100 years after the Hollywood elite put it on the map, the Sunset Strip continues to pulse with energy, offering West Hollywood locals and visitors a place to immerse themselves in its history and culture while having a whole lot of fun.

West Hollywood has never been known for following trends. It’s known for setting them, and you’ll find this most apparent on Santa Monica Boulevard, which runs from La Brea Avenue on the east to Doheny Drive on the west. This eclectic thoroughfare once traversed an industrial area dotted with film studios and was a Los Angeles Pacific Railway route. Also known as the westernmost leg of the historical Route 66 (once America’s main cross-country highway, it is still marked with iconic shieldshaped signage), the boulevard connects the east side of Los Angeles with the Pacific Ocean, passing through Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Century City, and West Los Angeles, and ending in Santa Monica. It takes on various personas along its length, and nowhere is it more diverse, fun, or pedestrian friendly than along the 2.9-mile/4.7-kilometer stretch that runs through West Hollywood. PHOTO: HARLOWE BAR: WILLIAM BRADFORD

EASTSIDE

The eastern end of Santa Monica recalls the Hollywood of yesteryear, with lively watering holes and celebrated eateries that summon up visions of Golden Age movie stars downing Manhattans and gesticulating wildly with their long, lacquered cigarette holders. Harlowe Bar (harlowebar.

com), for instance, feels more like a social club than a bar, and Jones Hollywood (joneshollywood.com) flaunts a retro, supper-club vibe. Followers of Hollywood history are thrilled that Formosa Café, a drinking and dining institution for Hollywood bigwigs both beloved and notorious since the 1920s, is slated for a transformative relaunch in 2019 as simply The Formosa (theformosabar.com). Expect the café’s patrons to include the many film, TV, and commercial folks who ply their trade at The Lot Studios, a 100-year-old, full-service studio situated down the street that still echoes with the voices of Hollywood heyday. Nearby Bar Lubitsch (barlubitsch.com), named in homage to Russian filmmaker Ernst Lubitsch, has earned a following for its selection of more than 200 vodkas used in an exotic mélange of cocktails and for the DJ-revved music and dancing in the bar’s Red Room lounge. Dining opportunities on the east side of the boulevard include The Hudson (thehudsonla.com), serving fresh, classic American fare and microbrews in lush, pre-Prohibition-style digs, and the casual James Beard Award–nominated seafood shack Connie and Ted’s (connieandteds.com), which pays tribute to the timeless lure of coastal cuisine.

WESTSIDE

At its west end, the boulevard is flanked with unique restaurants, eclectic boutiques, coffee shops, gyms, and bookstores. Here, rainbow flags symbolize the guiding principle on which West Hollywood was built: freedom to be yourself and to live life your own way. The LGBTQ community plays a leading role in the area, culturally and economically.

As home to the most popular gay and lesbian scene in Los Angeles, the west end is famous for its gay nightclubs, frequented by anyone and everyone eager to celebrate diversity and acceptance, along with tasty cocktails, catchy music, and lively entertainment, often served up with a well-executed theme. Patrons at GYM Sports Bar (gymsportsbar.com), for instance, frequent this man’s man

The first community to provide a safe, welcoming environment for gays and lesbians, West Hollywood blazed the trail to uninhibited freedom and equality for the LGBTQ population. Home to a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender population that comprises more than a third of its residents, West Hollywood is renowned as the preeminent LGBTQ sanctuary. The city has been a symbol of independence and counterculture since its humble beginnings as a settlement called Sherman, where rough railroad workers enjoyed living outside the jurisdiction of Los Angeles law enforcement in 1896. Without official city status, Sherman continued to sidestep legal authority

12

during Prohibition; alcohol flowed freely there at nightclubs such as Sunset Trocadero and Ciro’s, which were popular among movie stars from adjacent Hollywood and Beverly Hills. In 1927, capitalizing on its neighbor’s fame, Sherman renamed itself West Hollywood. Ciro’s again defied the established order in the 1950s, when it hosted the world’s first Sunday afternoon T-dances, at which gay men danced together, though it was illegal. As the gay community embraced the social freedom of the 1960s, their influence spread along Santa Monica Boulevard, prompting residents to nickname the west end of the street “Boys Town.” The closing of Ciro’s (which became The Comedy Store in 1972) spurred gays to open their own nightclubs

and dance bars, and laws prohibiting gays dancing together were repealed in 1975, just in time for disco. In the next decade, a movement in L.A. County to drop rent control laws motivated West Hollywood to incorporate in 1984, which also allowed the city to obtain funding to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic that was devastating its community. Simultaneously, with nearly 50 percent of its voting population comprised of gay residents, West Hollywood elected the first openly lesbian mayor, Valerie Terrigno. In 1985, West Hollywood blazed the trail as the first place in America to legally recognize same-sex relationships. Ultimately, in 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court followed in West Hollywood’s progressive footsteps by legalizing same-sex marriage across the country.

locale to watch the big game, shoot some pool, or get lucky at the poker table. And the Old West comes alive with a few significant updates at Flaming Saddles (flamingsaddles.com), a rollicking nightclub that features country-western music and an eye-popping ensemble of shirtless, dancing bartenders. Revolver Video Bar (revolverweho.com) opts for a rotation of theme nights and special events under a high-tech, video-forward umbrella. And no exploration of the gay bar scene would be complete without a visit to The Abbey Food + Bar (theabbeyweho.com), founded by gay advocate and philanthropist David Cooley, where the selection of food and beverages is as varied and appealing as WeHo itself. Also on the western side of Santa Monica Boulevard, fame and fortune assert themselves in the form of dining and fraternizing hot spots. Among the newest of these is Blackship (blackshipla.com), whose unique fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisines (think: homemade pasta with Asian overtones), tapas-influenced sharing, and open kitchen foster a joyful dining experience. For a beach party experience, Fiesta Cantina (f iestacantina.net) extends an open invitation to experience Mexican-flavored revelry in the glow of multicolored lights and cocktails to match. SUR Restaurant & Lounge (just off the boulevard on Robertson; surrestaurant.com) has been featured on the Bravo TV shows The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules. The venue’s elegant interior, designed by Lisa Vanderpump Todd and her husband, who are partial owners, is matched by the sumptuous dishes such as filet mignon and roasted duck in plum sauce. If you’re looking for something just as glorious, the couple’s PUMP Restaurant (pumprestaurant.com) down the block blends the feel of a Tuscan garden with the elegance of 19th-century Paris and a global menu to suit every taste. If you’d prefer to spend an evening channeling 1960s and ’70s Hollywood, you can’t get more classic than Dan Tana’s (dantanasrestaurant.com), a Santa Monica Boulevard staple that has served up its classic Italian cuisine to just about every famous entertainer, politician, and bigwig who has ever visited the area. Post-dinner, proceed to the Troubadour (troubadour.com), a club renowned for launching musical luminaries such as Elton John and James Taylor, to take in the rich history and enduring legacy that attest to the power of live music. Pair these classic experiences with a stay at one of the area’s newest hotels, such as Hotel 850 (hotel850svb.com), where Europeanstyle luxury melds with the comforts of home (roaring fireplace, anyone?) and effortless California elegance. While the east end of the boulevard channels the glamour of old Hollywood and the west end beats to the modern-day drum of the diverse community, mid Santa Monica Boulevard carries a decidedly retro vibe, with the indelible marks of bygone eras that have helped to frame West Hollywood history. Start your journey to the past during the day at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture (makcenter.org), which supports the arts through a series of public events and exhibitions and offers a showcase of history with a thoughtful swipe at convention. While there, tour the Schindler House, designed and constructed as an experiment in communal living in 1921–22. Hearty appetites are well served at another staple of West Coast history: Hamburger Mary’s Bar & Grille (hamburgermarys.com), a national phenomenon that began as a quirky, gay-friendly dive in San Francisco in 1972. Best described then and now as an “open-air bar and grille for open-minded

people,” this string of independently owned eateries/late-night entertainment venues continues to supply great food, community activism, and grownup fun. For diners who crave a farm-to-table experience, the d e ce p t i ve l y n a m e d Laurel Hardware (laurelhardware.com) has all the nuts and bolts, so to speak. Here, where actual hardware was sold with a smile from 1946 to 2008, guests now feast on gourmet organic, hormone-free, and free-range fare from sashimi to short ribs. Recalling the high society of yesteryear, Conservatory (conservatoryweho.com) opened its doors in 2018. Serving dinner and happy hour, this tasteful venue features four distinct spaces to meet every hobnobber’s need: a street-level café; the Café at Conservatory; the main floor–based full restaurant and bar; and the Society Room, where an “elevated cocktail program” uses unlikely ingredients like red miso and maple butter to great effect. And be sure to check out the “forbidden fruit” at Employees Only (employeesonlyla.com), a speakeasy-themed bar and restaurant that comes complete with a hidden entrance, art deco interior design, on-site spiritual readings, and, of course, a menu of classic and creative cocktails to wash down the steak tartare.

DESIGN DISTRICT

RAG & BONE

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN STELLA MCCARTNEY

The epicenter of high-caliber design, fashion, art, dining, and beauty, the West Hollywood Design District is located at the intersections of Melrose Avenue, Beverly Boulevard, and Robertson Boulevard. A distinct mix of global designer flagships, local boutiques, art galleries, interior design showrooms, and chic eateries is concentrated in this walkable area, making it an unrivaled international destination for design-savvy professionals and sophisticated shoppers alike. Back in the 1950s, the neighborhood held just a handful of shops, studios, and cafés that catered to the design trade. In the ’60s, businesses like Phyllis Morris Originals became “designers to the stars,” attracting increasing numbers of style seekers to the area and slowly transforming it into one of the most distinguished design districts in the country. As more design trade resources opened their doors, the influx of artists, dressmakers, upholsterers, dancers, and musicians fleshed out the bohemian spirit of the burgeoning district. And in recent years, it has been further enhanced with an ever-changing landscape of locally created outdoor murals.

Stroll through some of the district’s high-end boutiques and you’re likely to spot a trend-conscious celebrity or two among the erudite throng flocking to Christian Louboutin (us.christianlouboutin.com) to add to their shoe collection and to ALLSAINTS (us.allsaints.com) to peruse the latest leather jacket styles. There is no lack of runway-inspired looks to be ogled here among the branded storefronts of fashion designers including Moschino (moschino.com), H. Lorenzo (hlorenzo.com), rag & bone (rag-bone.com), Maxfield (maxfieldla.com), and Stella McCartney (stella mccartney.com). Admirers of unusual and eclectic interiors will have a field day at Luminaire (luminaire.com), a 15,500-square-foot playground featuring inspired pieces from designers across the globe. Meanwhile, a wonderland awaits aficionados of modern interior design in the showrooms of timeless, updated classic furnishings at the RH West Hollywood (restorationhardware.com) flagship store on Melrose Avenue. And no tour of the Design District would be complete without a visit to the Blue Whale, also known as the Pacific Design Center (pacificdesigncenter.com), a sleek, azure-

It houses about 100 boutiques dedicated to branded, interior design– based showrooms. When it’s time to refuel, a delicious pickme-up is never far away in the Design District. Among local favorites are Alfred2Go (alfred.la), known for its fine javas, teas, and yummy go-with pastries, and Urth Caffé (urthcaffe.com), where the organic brews and comfort food pair well with the outdoor patio—perfect for people-watching and celeb-spotting. Don’t be surprised if they’re following those sweat sessions with one of the healthful libations served at Cha Cha Matcha (chachamatcha.com), where the popular green tea leaf powder makes its way into a delectable assortment of hot and cold concoctions. Dinner can be anything you want it to be in the Design District, where the restaurant menus are as varied as the residents. If you’re with a group that includes meat

lovers, vegans, and everything in between, the broad-range American menu offered at Craig’s (craigs.la) has something for everyone. At E.P. & L.P. (eplosangeles.com), you can start with drinks at the rooftop lounge that overlooks the Hollywood Hills and the Sunset Strip, then head downstairs to savor the flavors of the restaurant’s South Asian–influenced dishes. Seafood-focused CATCH LA (catchrestaurants.com) also provides a rooftop setting—and an entire menu page dedicated to the area’s many vegan patrons. To go meatless altogether, head to Gracias Madre (graciasmadreweho.com), where Mexican cuisine is reimagined with a purely plant-based and organic menu. For late-night frolicking, the Design District invites you to choose your adventure. Raspoutine (raspoutine.com), a Russianthemed club inspired by the mid-century Parisian hot spot of the same name, has just added West Hollywood to its stable of chic overseas locales. Channel your inner Dostoyevsky as you feast on caviar and, of course, top-notch vodka. Feeling too buoyant for borscht? Check out The Peppermint Club (peppermintclub.com), a nod to the hot spots of the 1960s. Sip your favorite cocktail as you sink back into one of the cushy seats and take in the live music and appealingly nostalgic atmosphere. What could be more appropriate for the most creative and innovative part of West Hollywood?

PUMP IT UP! Too-chic-for-words reality star Lisa Vanderpump may live in Beverly Hills, but for the Brit bon vivant—and restaurant biz whiz—West Hollywood is where the action is. To reality TV fans who like a chaser of sanity with those intoxicating table-flipping scenes, Lisa Vanderpump rules. Known as the classiest of the millionairesses on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills—which is still a hit in its ninth season—the London-born ubersocialite glides through that show with oh-so-silky élan, occasionally expressing concern or amusing displeasure over her kooky costars’ actions. Even more impressive, though, is her business savoir faire: Call her The Hot Restaurateur of West Hollywood. Showing as much mettle as charm, the former child actress—who married dashing restaurateur Ken Todd when she was 21—has created three nationally famous food-and-drink spots here within a three-minute walk from each other. Of course it helps that she’s cleverly made those spots the fodder of her own reality subfranchise. Vanderpump Rules, now in season six, exposes the behind-thescenes romances, hangovers, and tan lines of her staff at SUR Restaurant & Lounge, the winkingly named PUMP restaurant, and her latest endeavor, TomTom bar (named for two hunky BFF bartenders from Rules; they designed the pricey fancy-drinks menu). WeHo? We-phew! Between all that and the star’s charity works (supporting LGBTQ rights, research for neurological disorders, and her own dog-rescue

PHOTOS: @LISAVANDERPUMP; (OPPOSITE) STEPHANIE PLOMARITY

outfit), tending to two grown-up kids, and overseeing an eponymous petpampering line, it’s shocking that Vanderpump has the time to relax and take in this town’s charms. But here she lets us in on her favorite local spots to unwind alone, with Ken, and/or with Giggy (her beloved Pomeranian, natch!). You’ve lived everywhere from London to Monaco, but three of your four restaurant-bars are in West Hollywood. Why here? This city has such a fun local population who love to have a good time. And it’s such a vibrant, eclectic city with a great aesthetic and so much going on. How does the town compare to other cities you love? Well, West Hollywood is very unique in that it has a remarkably positive and upbeat atmosphere. And the weather allows us to have some incredibly visual outdoor restaurants and bars that are unlike any in the world. You’ve shown a flair in helping design your own hot boîtes. What are your go-to local design stores? I love Between the Sheets for home accessories and, of course, RH: Restoration Hardware. Just for looking alone, the Pacific Design Center has some incredibly jaw-dropping showrooms. Speaking of eye candy, any fave spot to people-watch? You know I’m going to say PUMP’s outdoor garden patio or TomTom’s front patio. Ha! That’s really the great thing about West Hollywood—so many places have outdoor spaces. You can people-watch to your heart’s content!

You obviously stay fit and lean— any “trendy” workouts here you adhere to? Thanks! I usually work out at home, but I really love Barry’s Bootcamp and Cycle House WeHo. They’ve been so supportive of our Vanderpump Dog Foundation and do so many charity rides for great causes. When you work out [at those spots], you feel good on both a physical and mental level. But the workout you get from shopping in West Hollywood is enough! I love walking along Robertson Boulevard— there are so many unique boutiques with such great style. Between that and Melrose Avenue, you can really find anything gorgeous you need. Any haberdasheries you recommend for men? I get a lot of Ken’s clothes made and tailored to him at Klein, Epstein & Parker on Robertson. They’re really fabulous and creative. How about a spa for, oh, a soothing facial? I don’t often do a lot of beauty treatments. But the new Burke Williams location is beautiful. When you want to give the glam a rest and just relax, where do you go? I love West Hollywood Park. It’s just behind TomTom. That’s where we host World Dog Day every year. It has a wonderful dog park.

BAR 1200 AT SUNSE T MARQUIS

HARLOWE

Given West Hollywood’s proximity to all the studios and their fancy production designers, it’s no surprise the city is more than sprinkled with bars that seem especially designed to make you feel like you’re in one very stylish movie. Channel your inner ingénue at Cecconi’s (cecconiswesthollywood.com) on the glam west side. Get your rock-star alter ego on at Jones Hollywood (joneshollywood.com) on the gritty east end. Or go international movie star at any number of Sunset Plaza’s (sunsetplaza.com) outdoor cafes in between. Still, we do have our nominees for West Hollywood’s Most Gorgeously Cinematic Watering Hole….

BAR 1200 AT SUNSET MARQUIS

> Formerly named The Whisky, this legendary jewel in the storied, California-swanky Sunset Marquis hotel screams Steven Tyler-in-the’90s. The clubby milieu—low-slung ceiling, boxy black armless couches, empty martini glasses—contrasts nicely with sleekly framed photos of rock acts in their prime. It’s a great place to savor an Old Fashioned and play your favorite Hollywood hedonist—or at least tickle the ivories like a struggling Neil Diamond did here back in the ’60s. (Tuesday is Piano Night.) sunsetmarquis.com

BARBETTE BAR & BISTRO

> “Didn’t you and Marion Cotillard film here, darling?” could be overheard at this latest charmer from details-obsessed restaurateur/ hotelier Sean MacPherson (of West

Hollywood’s Bar Lubitsch and New York’s Waverly Inn). A ticket back to ’20s cafe society with red velvet booths, fringe-lamp sconces, and a marble-topped bar that looks like it was plucked from one of Colette’s favorite boîtes, it’s all invigoratingly cool and très chouette. barbettebarandbistro.com

THE COURTYARD AT VIALE DEI ROMANI

> Tucked into the Kimpton La Peer Hotel on a fairly nondescript side street, the modern-rustic bar The Courtyard recalls a hideaway for in-demand models in Milan. The indoor-outdoor setting includes a little patio with lantern-dangling olive trees, groovy chairs, and graffiti-esque murals. Sip the Aviation #2 (lemon, gin with Luxardo cherries) and pretend your last name is Missoni.

HARLOWE

> The backdrop here: Hollywood in its deco-and-drama-dripping 1930s. The Moroccan tile floor, the murmur of vintage jazz tunes, and drinks like the Fair-Weather Friend (tequila, Aperol, Curaçao, grapefruit, lime, bitters, soda) all aim to recall an era when (ill-fated) Jean Harlow became the silver screen’s first blonde bombshell. As with all the watering holes on this list, nosh can be ordered handily here. Air kisses to the Lavender Berry Lemon Bars. harlowebar.com

TOMTOM

> If SUR and PUMP were flicks and not restaurant-slash-lounges, they’d be called boffo hits. And the “producers” of those hot spots, Bravo-lebrity Lisa Vanderpump and her husband, Ken Todd, have another winner with this frolicsome indoor/ outdoor joint. The giant brass clock behind the bar definitely screams steampunk, so feel free to imagine you’re knocking back Stroke of Midnights (vanilla vodka, cold-press espresso, Kahlúa) with Robert Downey Jr. on the set of a Sherlock Holmes sequel. tomtombar.la

3 DAYS

ITINERARY:

It’s no wonder West Hollywood is called “The Creative City”: With its distinctive architecture, savvy style, and some of the hippest shops and boutiques in Southern California, the city packs more fashion and design into its trendy 1.9 square miles than most cities many times its size.

28

DAY 1 Start the first day stylishly with a breakfast burrito at Alfred2Go (alfred.la), a quirky-cool space where the motto is “But first, coffee.” Next, stop by Kelly Wearstler’s popular interiors shop (kellywearstler.com) just a few blocks away. Both are part of the West Hollywood Design District (westhollywooddesigndistrict.com), where more than 200 boutiques, flagship stores, art galleries, and interior design showrooms are packed neatly along Robertson Boulevard, Melrose Avenue, and Beverly Boulevard. Shop the progressive selections from exciting emerging designers at H. Lorenzo North Robertson (H.L.N.R.) (hlorenzo.com), then head a few doors down to Leclaireur (leclaireurla.com), the dazzling furniture-focused first American outlet from the high-end French retailer. For lunch, duck into the trendy but very welcoming (and sometimes celebritysprinkled) Cecconi’s (cecconiswesthollywood.

THE REALREAL

com) to enjoy one of its fantastic handmade pasta specialties. Then it’s back down Melrose for more shopping at a couple of West Hollywood’s coolest new concept shops: Nike by Melrose (nike.com), an experimental pilot wherein the retail space stocks only Nike items that are most popular with local online customers; and The RealReal (therealreal.com/ la), one of the first physical presences of the popular upscale fashion consignment website. Stop back at your home base to drop off the day’s shopping haul, and rest up before an unforgettable dinner at the awardwinning Lucques (lucques.com), one of West Hollywood’s most elegant (yet sublimely cozy) eateries for two decades and counting—the braised beef short ribs are locally legendary. Cap off your fashionable day with a drink at the chic Tower Bar (sunsettowerhotel. com/restaurants-and-bar/tower-bar) in the historic Sunset Tower Hotel, where you can sip your Tower Smash to sweeping views of Downtown Los Angeles, inside what was once gangster Bugsy Siegel’s apartment.

DAY 2 Kick off day two with a plate of brioche French toast on the patio at Zinqué (lezinque.com) before visiting a true West Hollywood icon: the massive Pacific Design Center (pacificdesigncenter.com), spread over three strikingly shaped and boldly hued buildings along San Vicente Boulevard between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard. Inside the 1.6 million-square-foot blue, green, and red complex, the PDC (as it’s known to locals) is home to showrooms for nearly 100 global interior design brands as well as two Wolfgang Puck restaurants and a state-of-the-art luxury film theater. After a morning of design inspiration, head up to the perennially hip Sunset Plaza to The Butcher, The Baker, The Cappuccino Maker (bbcmcafe.com) for a gourmet burger or a seared salmon salad. Then check out West Hollywood’s very own modern architecture masterpiece: the sleek and beautiful Schindler House (makcenter.org/ sites/schindler-house), designed by famed Austrian-born architect Rudolph M. Schindler as a communal living experiment in the early 1920s. Located within is the MAK Center Bookstore, specializing in contemporary art and architecture publications. In the evening, dine at the fashionable and superb Viale dei Romani (vialedeiromani. com), a seafood-driven trattoria inside the ultra-hip new Kimpton La Peer Hotel. Indulge yourself and celebrate your newfound WeHo design cred with the white truffle tagliatelle. Cap off the night with cocktails at one of West Hollywood’s sceniest restaurant/lounge/ bars, Laurel Hardware (laurelhardware.com), housed inside what was once—you guessed it—a hardware store, with an industrial aesthetic harkening back to its previous incarnation.

ITINERARY:

FITNESS & WELLNESS West Hollywood has been at the forefront of global wellness throughout its vibrant young life, standing powerfully at the epicenter of Southern California’s keenly healthconscious culture.

30

DAY 1 Kick off your foray into the best of local fitness with the paleo hash at the cozy Gravité Café (gravitecafe.la) on Sunset Boulevard— but don’t get too comfy, for next it’s off to Pilates class at one of the city’s favorite fitness hot spots, Harmony Studios Pilates (harmonystudiospilates.com), offering classes for all ability levels several times a day. Harmony is also home to the popular personal training studio The Xcceleration Station (thexccelerationstation.com), known for its state-of-the-fitness-art Power Plate machines and its “fitness as wellness” approach. After working up a WeHo-size appetite, head over to Beaming Organic Superfood Cafe (livebeaming.com) at the corner of Melrose and La Cienega for a protein-rich kale Caesar salad and an antioxidant elixir. Now it’s time to relax and refresh with a seaweed and green tea full-body wrap at The Gendarmerie Boutique & Spa (thegendarmerie.com)—one of West Hollywood’s top spas, it’s set in an

BARRY'S BOOTCAMP

adorable 1920s stucco cottage along Santa Monica Boulevard. For dinner, dig into the delicious and completely vegan Mexican fare at local favorite Gracias Madre (graciasmadreweho. com) on Melrose; ask for a table on the gorgeous olive-tree-lined patio. Try the amazing flautas de camote, made with sweet potatoes, caramelized onions, guacamole, and cashew nacho sauce. Feel free to opt for one of the tasty dessert options, since you can walk it off by exploring West Hollywood on foot after dinner—WeHo is consistently pegged as one of California’s most walkable cities.

DAY 2 Start the next day bright and early at Earthbar (earthbar.com) on Santa Monica Boulevard. This is the flagship location of the small chain that Southern Californians have come to rely upon for excellent cold-pressed juices, smoothies, and fresh grab-and-go meals. Choose the Muscle Up smoothie

with protein powder, banana, and almond butter, and add a Physique power boost for good measure—you’re going to need it, because your next stop is another flagship, the original location of the now-global buttkicking fitness sensation Barry’s Bootcamp (barrysbootcamp.com). Classes here swerve on a dime between cardio and strength training, and don’t expect to be coddled—but do expect a fun, nightclub-like atmosphere, and more importantly, results. Haul what’s left of yourself up to Sunset Plaza for a stop at Tocaya Organica (tocayaorganica.com) to try its delectable signature “Modern Organic Mexican” cuisine. Try the popular vegan and gluten-free Fajita del Rey with sautéed peppers and onions—you pick your protein, and (to help your sore muscles grow) you can turn it into a Muscle Bowl by adding egg and turkey or vegan bacon. The long afternoon ahead will be all about indulgence and rejuvenation for your entire body, with a Spa-Liday treatment at the lush SPA at Sunset Marquis (sunsetmarquis.com/west-hollywood-hotelspa). The heavenly package comes complete with a 90-minute massage, a 90-minute facial, a classic manicure and pedicure, a day pass to the Sunset Marquis Pool, and even valet parking and a glass of champagne. Ease yourself back to reality gently and divinely with dinner at the new Pura Vita (puravitalosangeles.com) on Santa Monica Boulevard—the first 100-percent plant-based Italian restaurant and wine bar in America, using only the finest organic and sustainable ingredients. You’ve earned the right to be a bit decadent, so tear into the Black Magic Lasagna, with cashew ricotta, besciamella, spinach, mushroom, black truffle cream, and pesto. After dinner—because nothing soothes the soul better than a good laugh—head up to The Comedy Store (thecomedystore.com) on Sunset, the iconic comedy club where countless legends have performed.

ITINERARY:

LGBTQ With one of the highest concentrations of LGBTQ residents in California and an inviting array of gay-owned and gay-focused businesses and attractions, West Hollywood is a veritable playground for global LGBTQ travelers.

32

DAY 1 Start your discovery of WeHo diversity with some serious shopping along the famed Santa Monica Boulevard, home to both L.A.’s Pride Parade in June and the massive West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval in October. LASC (shoplasc.com) has been WeHo’s goto gay clothing retailer for three and a half decades, offering 4,000 square feet of top sportswear, swimwear, and underwear brands as well as its signature activewear line. More must-visit boutiques along the strip include the trendy Brick & Mortar (bricknmortar. co) and the quirky Block Party (ymla.com), which proudly proclaims itself “the gayest store on earth.” For lunch, pop into nearby gay staple Cafe D’Etoile (cafedetoile.net), which opened the same year as LASC, 1983—a year before West Hollywood even incorporated into a city. Grab a seat on the patio for some great peoplewatching along the boulevard’s busiest block. Next, use the rainbow crosswalk at Santa

SA NTA MONICA BOULE VA RD

Monica and San Vicente to head down to the West Hollywood Library (lacountylibrary. org/lgbt)—a hidden gem often overlooked by visitors, but well worth checking out for its great collection of hard-to-find LGBTQ books, its fantastic glass-panel view overlooking San Vicente Boulevard and the Pacific Design Center, and its stunning exterior murals by Shepard Fairey, RETNA, and Kenny Scharf. Head back up to the boulevard for dinner at one of the newer kids on the block, Saint Felix (westhollywood.saintfelix.net). Choose a patio table for more boulevardwatching (things definitely get livelier in the evening), or opt for a cozy booth and the fun atmosphere inside. The Slider Trio is a Felix favorite—mix and match from Wagyu beef, braised short rib, spicy fried chicken, seared ahi, or grilled veggie. After dinner, it’s time for drinks and dancing at a true West Hollywood LGBTQ icon, The Abbey (theabbeyweho. com). Born as a small coffee shop in 1991, it’s now a sprawling, lively, and always-packed 16,000-square-foot mega-bar.

DAY 2

No worries if you need to start off slowly on day two—the kind folks at local favorite Basix (basixcafe.com) have been nursing hangovers with their delicious breakfast burritos for years. If it’s a Tuesday or Sunday after 11 a.m. (or by appointment on other days and times), head over to the June Mazer Lesbian Collection (mazerlesbianarchives.org), the West Coast’s largest archive of lesbian and feminist history and culture, and home to thousands of important items including artwork, photographs, videotapes, magazines, personal papers, scrapbooks, posters, and much more. Visit the ONE Gallery (one.usc.edu/visit), the offsite space for the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries, where the recent slate has included a reading of “Sissy, a Coming of Age Story” by Jacob Tobia and showing of genderqueer performance art in the 1970s. Lunch today at on the patio at kitchen24 (kitchen24.info), a neighborhood favorite where breakfast is served 24/7 and the elevated comfort-food dishes range from veggie burgers and salads to the towering fried chicken stack. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon at V Wine Room (vwesthollywood.com), located just north of Santa Monica Boulevard, where California wines are celebrated in a strikingly designed setting in a historic building that previously served as both Charlie Chaplin’s actors’ studio and a small public library. Saunter back eastward along the boulevard for a festive dinner at Marix (marixtexmex.com), a longtime WeHo Tex-Mex favorite where gay celeb sightings (think Andy Cohen) are not uncommon. Dive into their famous fajitas, but go easy on the margaritas—for next it’s off to one of West Hollywood’s most uninhibited gay bars, the always-fun Fubar (fubarla.com). If drag’s more your thing, head instead to the WeHo outpost of Hamburger Mary’s Bar & Grille (hamburgermarys.com/weho), where RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants are regular stars of the near-nightly drag bingos and revues.
