After decades of notoriety, the Sunset Strip continues to blaze its own path as a world-famous cultural landmark, setting trends in music, hotels, dining, and shopping. This most famous segment of Sunset Boulevard begins and ends in West Hollywood, and like the city it calls home, it’s constantly breaking new ground and reinventing itself. Though it’s often portrayed in movies (it was the setting for Sunset Boulevard, Almost Famous, and Rock of Ages, to name a few), nothing compares to experiencing the Strip up close and in person. Bordered on the west by Beverly Hills and on the east by Hollywood, the iconic mile-and-a-half stretch of road is lined with an array of world-class hotels, nightclubs, restaurants, shops, and spas. Over the years, the Sunset Strip has seen it all, starting with the seedy glitz of the 1920s, when Prohibition fueled the rise of nightclubs and speakeasies. At that time, West Hollywood was not yet an incorporated city, so the Strip was lightly policed, making it the perfect playground for the rebellious denizens of early Hollywood. By the 1940s, swanky nightclubs like Ciro’s, Sunset Trocadero, and Mocambo reigned supreme, attracting A-list celebrity clientele like Marilyn Monroe along with less savory characters like gangster Bugsy Siegel. In the 1960s, the Sunset Strip became a gathering place for the counterculture movement in Los Angeles. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison were fixtures. The Whisky a Go Go (whiskyagogo.com) introduced go-go dancers to the

U.S. and propelled The Doors—the club’s house band at the time—to fame and notoriety. The Strip continued to be a nucleus of punk rock and new wave music during the late 1970s and became ground zero for the colorful glam metal scene, hosting bands like Mötley Crüe, Guns N’ Roses, and Poison throughout the 1980s. Meanwhile, another entertainment renaissance was taking place on the Strip as young standup performers like David Letterman, Andy Kaufman, and The Smothers Brothers regaled audiences with their routines at The Comedy Store (thecomedystore.com), forging a path for comic innovation that continues to this day. Today the Strip continues to launch new artists of all kinds and attract crowds to legendary venues like the Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy Theatre (theroxy.com), which anchor a nightlife-rich neighborhood of bars, many of which are tucked into the area’s legendary hotels. To honor tradition, stop at The Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel (sunset towerhotel.com) and the open-air Skybar (mondrianlos angeles.com) that overlooks the outdoor pool at the ultra-chic Mondrian Los Angeles. West Hollywood has never been known for following trends. It’s known for setting them, and you’ll find this most apparent on Santa Monica Boulevard, which runs from La Brea Avenue on the east to Doheny Drive on the west. This eclectic thoroughfare once traversed an industrial area dotted with film studios and was a Los Angeles Pacific Railway route. Also known as the westernmost leg of the historical Route 66 (once America’s main cross-country highway, it is still marked with iconic shieldshaped signage), the boulevard connects the east side of Los Angeles with the Pacific Ocean, passing through Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Century City, and West Los Angeles, and ending in Santa Monica. It takes on various personas along its length, and nowhere is it more diverse, fun, or pedestrian friendly than along the 2.9-mile/4.7-kilometer stretch that runs through West Hollywood. The eastern end of Santa Monica recalls the Hollywood of yesteryear, with lively watering holes and celebrated eateries that summon up visions of Golden Age movie stars downing Manhattans and gesticulating wildly with their long, lacquered cigarette holders. Harlowe Bar (harlowebar.
com), for instance, feels more like a social club than a bar, and Jones Hollywood (joneshollywood.com) flaunts a retro, supper-club vibe. Followers of Hollywood history are thrilled that Formosa Café, a drinking and dining institution for Hollywood bigwigs both beloved and notorious since the 1920s, is slated for a transformative relaunch in 2019 as simply The Formosa (theformosabar.com). Expect the café’s patrons to include the many film, TV, and commercial folks who ply their trade at The Lot Studios, a 100-year-old, full-service studio situated down the street that still echoes with the voices of Hollywood heyday. Nearby Bar Lubitsch (barlubitsch.com), named in homage to Russian filmmaker Ernst Lubitsch, has earned a following for its selection of more than 200 vodkas used in an exotic mélange of cocktails and for the DJ-revved music and dancing in the bar’s Red Room lounge. Dining opportunities on the east side of the boulevard include The Hudson (thehudsonla.com), serving fresh, classic American fare and microbrews in lush, pre-Prohibition-style digs, and the casual James Beard Award–nominated seafood shack Connie and Ted’s (connieandteds.com), which pays tribute to the timeless lure of coastal cuisine.

At its west end, the boulevard is flanked with unique restaurants, eclectic boutiques, coffee shops, gyms, and bookstores. Here, rainbow flags symbolize the guiding principle on which West Hollywood was built: freedom to be yourself and to live life your own way. The LGBTQ community plays a leading role in the area, culturally and economically.
As home to the most popular gay and lesbian scene in Los Angeles, the west end is famous for its gay nightclubs, frequented by anyone and everyone eager to celebrate diversity and acceptance, along with tasty cocktails, catchy music, and lively entertainment, often served up with a well-executed theme. Patrons at GYM Sports Bar (gymsportsbar.com), for instance, frequent this man’s man
The first community to provide a safe, welcoming environment for gays and lesbians, West Hollywood blazed the trail to uninhibited freedom and equality for the LGBTQ population. Home to a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender population that comprises more than a third of its residents, West Hollywood is renowned as the preeminent LGBTQ sanctuary. The city has been a symbol of independence and counterculture since its humble beginnings as a settlement called Sherman, where rough railroad workers enjoyed living outside the jurisdiction of Los Angeles law enforcement in 1896. Without official city status, Sherman continued to sidestep legal authority

during Prohibition; alcohol flowed freely there at nightclubs such as Sunset Trocadero and Ciro’s, which were popular among movie stars from adjacent Hollywood and Beverly Hills. In 1927, capitalizing on its neighbor’s fame, Sherman renamed itself West Hollywood. Ciro’s again defied the established order in the 1950s, when it hosted the world’s first Sunday afternoon T-dances, at which gay men danced together, though it was illegal. As the gay community embraced the social freedom of the 1960s, their influence spread along Santa Monica Boulevard, prompting residents to nickname the west end of the street “Boys Town.” The closing of Ciro’s (which became The Comedy Store in 1972) spurred gays to open their own nightclubs
and dance bars, and laws prohibiting gays dancing together were repealed in 1975, just in time for disco. In the next decade, a movement in L.A. County to drop rent control laws motivated West Hollywood to incorporate in 1984, which also allowed the city to obtain funding to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic that was devastating its community. Simultaneously, with nearly 50 percent of its voting population comprised of gay residents, West Hollywood elected the first openly lesbian mayor, Valerie Terrigno. In 1985, West Hollywood blazed the trail as the first place in America to legally recognize same-sex relationships. Ultimately, in 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court followed in West Hollywood’s progressive footsteps by legalizing same-sex marriage across the country.

And the Old West comes alive with a few significant updates at Flaming Saddles (flamingsaddles.com), a rollicking nightclub that features country-western music and an eye-popping ensemble of shirtless, dancing bartenders. Revolver Video Bar (revolverweho.com) opts for a rotation of theme nights and special events under a high-tech, video-forward umbrella. And no exploration of the gay bar scene would be complete without a visit to The Abbey Food + Bar (theabbeyweho.com), founded by gay advocate and philanthropist David Cooley, where the selection of food and beverages is as varied and appealing as WeHo itself. Also on the western side of Santa Monica Boulevard, fame and fortune assert themselves in the form of dining and fraternizing hot spots. Among the newest of these is Blackship (blackshipla.com), whose unique fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisines (think: homemade pasta with Asian overtones), tapas-influenced sharing, and open kitchen foster a joyful dining experience. For a beach party experience, Fiesta Cantina (f iestacantina.net) extends an open invitation to experience Mexican-flavored revelry in the glow of multicolored lights and cocktails to match. SUR Restaurant & Lounge (just off the boulevard on Robertson; surrestaurant.com) has been featured on the Bravo TV shows The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules. The venue’s elegant interior, designed by Lisa Vanderpump Todd and her husband, who are partial owners, is matched by the sumptuous dishes such as filet mignon and roasted duck in plum sauce. If you’re looking for something just as glorious, the couple’s PUMP Restaurant (pumprestaurant.com) down the block blends the feel of a Tuscan garden with the elegance of 19th-century Paris and a global menu to suit every taste. If you’d prefer to spend an evening channeling 1960s and ’70s Hollywood, you can’t get more classic than Dan Tana’s (dantanasrestaurant.com), a Santa Monica Boulevard staple that has served up its classic Italian cuisine to just about every famous entertainer, politician, and bigwig who has ever visited the area. Post-dinner, proceed to the Troubadour (troubadour.com), a club renowned for launching musical luminaries such as Elton John and James Taylor, to take in the rich history and enduring legacy that attest to the power of live music. Pair these classic experiences with a stay at one of the area’s newest hotels, such as Hotel 850 (hotel850svb.com), where Europeanstyle luxury melds with the comforts of home (roaring fireplace, anyone?) and effortless California elegance. While the east end of the boulevard channels the glamour of old Hollywood and the west end beats to the modern-day drum of the diverse community, mid Santa Monica Boulevard carries a decidedly retro vibe, with the indelible marks of bygone eras that have helped to frame West Hollywood history. Start your journey to the past during the day at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture (makcenter.org), which supports the arts through a series of public events and exhibitions and offers a showcase of history with a thoughtful swipe at convention. While there, tour the Schindler House, designed and constructed as an experiment in communal living in 1921–22. The epicenter of high-caliber design, fashion, art, dining, and beauty, the West Hollywood Design District is located at the intersections of Melrose Avenue, Beverly Boulevard, and Robertson Boulevard. Back in the 1950s, the neighborhood held just a handful of shops, studios, and cafés that catered to the design trade. Among local favorites are Alfred2Go (alfred.la), known for its fine javas, teas, and yummy go-with pastries, and Urth Caffé (urthcaffe.com), where the organic brews and comfort food pair well with the outdoor patio—perfect for people-watching and celeb-spotting. And if the faces and bodies passing by seem markedly lovelier than average, it could be because they’re regulars at Shape House (theshapehouse.com), an urban sweat lodge that promises to deliver red-carpet-ready looks with a modern approach to the ancient wellness practice of sweating. For late-night frolicking, the Design District invites you to choose your adventure. Raspoutine (raspoutine.com), a Russianthemed club inspired by the mid-century Parisian hot spot of the same name, has just added West Hollywood to its stable of chic overseas locales. Channel your inner Dostoyevsky as you feast on caviar and, of course, top-notch vodka. Feeling too buoyant for borscht? PUMP IT UP! Too-chic-for-words reality star Lisa Vanderpump may live in Beverly Hills, but for the Brit bon vivant—and restaurant biz whiz—West Hollywood is where the action is. To reality TV fans who like a chaser of sanity with those intoxicating table-flipping scenes, Lisa Vanderpump rules. Known as the classiest of the millionairesses on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills—which is still a hit in its ninth season—the London-born ubersocialite glides through that show with oh-so-silky élan, occasionally expressing concern or amusing displeasure over her kooky costars’ actions. Even more impressive, though, is her business savoir faire: Call her The Hot Restaurateur of West Hollywood. Showing as much mettle as charm, the former child actress—who married dashing restaurateur Ken Todd when she was 21—has created three nationally famous food-and-drink spots here within a three-minute walk from each other. Of course it helps that she’s cleverly made those spots the fodder of her own reality subfranchise. Vanderpump Rules, now in season six, exposes the behind-thescenes romances, hangovers, and tan lines of her staff at SUR Restaurant & Lounge, the winkingly named PUMP restaurant, and her latest endeavor, TomTom bar (named for two hunky BFF bartenders from Rules; they designed the pricey fancy-drinks menu). WeHo? We-phew! Between all that and the star’s charity works (supporting LGBTQ rights, research for neurological disorders, and her own dog-rescue

outfit), tending to two grown-up kids, and overseeing an eponymous petpampering line, it’s shocking that Vanderpump has the time to relax and take in this town’s charms. But here she lets us in on her favorite local spots to unwind alone, with Ken, and/or with Giggy (her beloved Pomeranian, natch!). You’ve lived everywhere from London to Monaco, but three of your four restaurant-bars are in West Hollywood. Why here? This city has such a fun local population who love to have a good time. And it’s such a vibrant, eclectic city with a great aesthetic and so much going on. How does the town compare to other cities you love? Well, West Hollywood is very unique in that it has a remarkably positive and upbeat atmosphere. And the weather allows us to have some incredibly visual outdoor restaurants and bars that are unlike any in the world. You’ve shown a flair in helping design your own hot boîtes. What are your go-to local design stores? I love Between the Sheets for home accessories and, of course, RH: Restoration Hardware. Just for looking alone, the Pacific Design Center has some incredibly jaw-dropping showrooms. Speaking of eye candy, any fave spot to people-watch? You know I’m going to say PUMP’s outdoor garden patio or TomTom’s front patio. Ha! That’s really the great thing about West Hollywood—so many places have outdoor spaces. You can people-watch to your heart’s content!
You obviously stay fit and lean— any “trendy” workouts here you adhere to? Thanks! I usually work out at home, but I really love Barry’s Bootcamp and Cycle House WeHo. They’ve been so supportive of our Vanderpump Dog Foundation and do so many charity rides for great causes. When you work out [at those spots], you feel good on both a physical and mental level. But the workout you get from shopping in West Hollywood is enough! I love walking along Robertson Boulevard— there are so many unique boutiques with such great style. Between that and Melrose Avenue, you can really find anything gorgeous you need. Any haberdasheries you recommend for men? I get a lot of Ken’s clothes made and tailored to him at Klein, Epstein & Parker on Robertson. They’re really fabulous and creative. How about a spa for, oh, a soothing facial? I don’t often do a lot of beauty treatments. But the new Burke Williams location is beautiful. When you want to give the glam a rest and just relax, where do you go? I love West Hollywood Park. It’s just behind TomTom. That’s where we host World Dog Day every year. It has a wonderful dog park.
