DINE + DRINK

Wolfgang Puck’s West Hollywood

In the mid-1970s, Ma Maison on West Hollywood’s Melrose Avenue was the place to be. Helmed by a dynamic young Austrian chef named Wolfgang Puck, the Cali-French restaurant attracted

ʨ

stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Gene Kelly, and Jack Nicholson. A few years later, in 1982, Puck went on to open the now-legendary Spago on the Sunset Strip, redefining California cuisine with signature dishes like pizza topped with smoked salmon and caviar. Spago soon became the scene of the hottest Oscar party. Hosted by superagent Swifty Lazar, it attracted both Hollywood royalty—Gregory Peck, Candice Bergen—and young upstarts like Tom Cruise, Madonna, and Michael Jackson.

Today, Spago is an icon in Beverly Hills and Puck runs a global restaurant empire. He’s been catering the post-Oscars Governor’s Ball for more than a quarter century now, and he’ll be overseeing the food for parties and other events when the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opens in the fall. But Puck has been fiercely attached to West Hollywood. His corporate offices are in the Pacific Design Center; his kids went to school here, at The Center for Early Education; and after more than ten years, he’s made a splashy return to the city’s restaurant scene with his much anticipated new restaurants and bars for Pendry West Hollywood. This stylish new Sunset Strip hotel, with 149 guest rooms and 40 residences, is home to Ospero, an all-day street-side café and bakery; Merois, the open-air rooftop restaurant that features Puck’s signature mix of Asian and FrenchCalifornia cuisine; the intimate Bar Pendry, offering handcrafted cocktails and small bites; and a poolside al fresco venue, for snacks like Puck’s legendary Chinois chicken salad. Between fine-tuning the menus for his new ventures, Puck chatted about the enduring, and evolving, appeal of West Hollywood. How central was West Hollywood to your early career? It’s been nearly 40 years since I opened Spago in West Hollywood, and almost 20 years since it closed. Some of my longtime customers tell me they still think of it as the most unique of all my restaurants. With the Oscar parties it became such a big deal. The neighbors behind us complained all the time about the noise, the cars,

everything. But when they sold their condo, they put “walking distance to Spago” in the listing. It was a definite selling point! Do you think West Hollywood has changed much since then? It’s a totally different city now! In the ’80s I would drive down Sunset Boulevard to get to Spago and there was only one large building—9000 West Sunset Boulevard. Today, you drive the mile or so of the Sunset Strip and there are all these modern new buildings—some hotels, some residences, some mixed-use with restaurants and retail. There’s so much that’s new and exciting happening here.

How do you see West Hollywood as a global city? If you go to New York, you have Midtown and then you have SoHo and Tribeca. I think West Hollywood is the Tribeca of Los Angeles. It’s a very artsy, vibrant city, but it still has the feel and warmth of a small town. I think of it as a very young and progressive city, a contrast to a more established city like Beverly Hills. How would you suggest a visitor spend a day in West Hollywood? I’d start by staying in one of the new boutique hotels, like Pendry West Hollywood. Begin your day with coffee and breakfast at Ospero. Next, instead of going to the gym, go for a walk. You can walk along Sunset all the way to Beverly Hills, wandering up and down some streets to take in the big mansions. Then, on the way back, stop at Sunset Plaza for lunch. On a nice day, Le Petit Four is a great place to hang out and people-watch. There are great shops in Sunset Plaza, too, and down the street is Book Soup, a wonderful place to browse for new reads. Melrose Avenue is another great area to explore, with terrific shops, art galleries, and restaurants. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, check out Gracias Madre for its creative plant-based Mexican food.
