We have a strong tradition of welcoming North American students to our forward-looking British conservatoire and offering a transformative experience in one of the most exciting cities for theatre-lovers that there has ever been.

LAMDA is particularly focused on the ensemble, any production is only as strong as its weakest link, and we strive to support one another as a global, creative family. The Ensemble is at the heart of how we’ll train you. Drama is a collaborative art form and we place great emphasis on the individual’s responsibility to the group and the group’s responsibility to the individual. This creates an atmosphere of mutual respect where creativity can flourish. Having said all this. we teach each student as an individual, which means that you’ll be able to build on your prior experience whilst encouraging your growth as a professional actor.
We believe drama has the power to transform lives. We want more people to share in this experience through training, qualifications, work, productions and facilities.
We won’t teach you just one methodology of acting, instead you’ll learn a wide range of techniques and skills, designed to provide you with the flexibility and knowledge to develop your own process and expression of the craft. These include traditional and established techniques and more contemporary techniques which harness the exciting world of new media.

You will work closely with industry professionals, alumni and guest artists. Collaboration is at LAMDA’s core with students working across courses to support one another, on productions or training generally. Production & Technical Arts students work on shows that the graduating actors perform in and the directing students, direct graduating actors as well as observe actor training when they begin their course.
We’ve offered exceptional vocational training for over 160 years and continue to ensure our training is current and industry focused. You’ll be taught by experienced and active industry professionals and and practitioners, who are engaged at high levels, from Shakespeare’s Globe to workshops from BAFTA Award winners of the silver screen. All our tutors have a wealth of training and practical experience behind them when they come to LAMDA and continue to grow as creatives themselves. With mentorship from alumni we continue to weave the experience our graduates achieve into our students’ experience and learning.
You’ll graduate from any of our courses as an authentic, confident and independent artist or technician, capable of shaping your own career. Beyond the drama school you’ll be supported by our alumni network and LAMDA Connect.

With full-time contact hours and practical, hands-on experience from placements to productions and showcases, you’ll be ready to step out as a professional actor or director. LAMDA has close relationships with the industry, hosts guest artist workshops and talks with leading practitioners and industry figures. The creative industries are collaborative and our courses stress the importance of working together as part of an ensemble to succeed.

In Year 1
Classes include acting study based on a range of techniques (for example, this may include improvisation, Laban, Michael Chekhov) and pure voice and movement training, singing (individual and group sessions) and a range of applied disciplines. You’ll also be taking part in a range of workshop projects (indicative topics include contemporary, classical, Greek drama, artist-led and individual self-created work).
BA (Hons) Professional Acting
You’ll gain confidence during your training, learning that an authentic and enthusiastic approach is the best preparation for a life in a dynamic profession. You’ll learn how to meet challenges head-on from the new knowledge and skills you’ll develop in your training.
In the first year, you’ll be introduced to the key skills you’ll need for professional careers in all media areas, such as theatre, film, TV and audio drama. You will get to grips with the essential groundwork in core performance skills of acting, voice work, movement and music.

In Year 3
L eading professionals will run workshops to share their invaluable insights, and you’ll receive lectures and guidance on all aspects of life as a professional actor including accounting, interview and audition techniques. You will also have access to a career counsellor throughout the year. You will develop your skills by performing in a professionally written, directed, crewed and post-produced short film shot on location as well as working on audio drama in our own studio, and creating your own voice and show-reel. Throughout the year you’ll continue to receive voice, movement and singing support on all your projects which will culminate in a showcase in the UK and the US, if you are eligible to work in the US.
You’ll have modules in Acting, Movement, Music, Screen and Audio 1, Voice and Advanced Skills for Acting.
In your first year, you’ll cover the core disciplines of acting, voice, movement and music in intensive classes, alongside workshop projects which may include contemporary texts, classical plays, and late 19th/ early 20th century European naturalism. These workshops will give you an opportunity to apply the skills you’ve learnt in class.

This masters degree in acting provides rigorous, world-class conservatoire training combined with industry-level postgraduate project work. The course is open to those from any background, but especially for those who want to shake up the ecosystem of the creative skills industry, and use their abilities to challenge the status quo and shape new landscapes for dramatic art.
Working mainly in small-group classes and will receive frequent, personalised feedback and support to advance your skillset and accelerate your career.
If you want to work as an actor and maker in the creative sector, our MFA acting programme offers an outstanding training. It will position you as an accomplished artist, with the ability to forge your own unique path in the industry.

In your training LAMDA will offer you some opportunities for masterclasses, lectures, talks, and where possible, open auditions with industry professionals. Finally, a unique feature of this course is the chance to train as a LAMDA Exams teacher.
You’ll also have the opportunity to share your artistry, skills and experience with younger audiences and potential theatremakers. The annual Shakespeare in Schools programme is an opportunity for our graduating MFA actors to share a bespoke project with secondary schools and colleges, culminating in fast-paced adaptations of Shakespeare’s popular works and workshops directly engaging with their younger audiences.
The final year will prepare you to become an independent and stand-out professional within the industry. You’ll be immersed in a series of performances on stage, screen and in audio drama, including a professionally written, directed, crewed and post-produced short film. Recent LAMDA graduation films have been selected for national and international film festivals. The final element of your training will be centred on the collaborative development and performance of a small group piece of original, self-created, theatre.

Study abroad at LAMDA
The courses provide an intensive burst of training (30 hours a week in small class sizes), covering essential techniques you can transfer to any classical text including classes on: music, movement, physical theatre, classical acting and voice. They are designed to deepen your engagement with classical texts and develop your repertoire of practical skills, so you can achieve your potential as an actor.
Our study abroad programme allows you to experience conservatoire training in London that’s reflective of our full-time courses, giving you a real insight into the LAMDA lifestyle and what to expect. This means you can join in extra-curricular societies, socialise across other courses, see productions at LAMDA and benefit from being in London with access to the West End, Shakespeare’s Globe and wider professional theatre.
If you’re interested in applying, do refer to the latest course content, as this may be adapted and developed. However, currently on the Spring Semester programme you can expect to study scenes from Shakespeare’s histories and tragedies and from english commedies of manners. In the Fall, the emphasis is on scene study workshops on Jacobean tragedy and Shakespeare’s late plays and comedies. You’ll also benefit from masterclasses with leading professionals and LAMDA alumni.

MA Classical Acting for the Professional Theatre
Working on plays from the Shakespearean, Jacobean, Spanish Golden Age, French classical and Restoration periods you will discover how classical theatre translates across centuries, cultures and languages, and build an awareness of their historical, political and social context, and their impact on modern theatre. This challenging and rewarding MA acting postgraduate course is for students who wish to enhance and develop their craft through world-class conservatoire training and prepare students for professional work.

This course is broken down into Acting in Classical Theatre, Movement and Physical Theatre, Voice, Speech, Song and Classical text. Classes are taught in craft skills to develop and strengthen your existing abilities and prepare you for the rehearsal process. MA Directing
In addition to masterclasses from visiting professional directors, you will also undertake assistant director attachments within LAMDA, working with both in-house and visiting directors. Take a look at our visiting creatives web page to see who’s worked with LAMDA recently.
The course covers the following modules allowing you to emerge with a broad tool kit of skills: The Actor’s toolkit, The Director prepares, Research and presentation, The Assistant Director, The Director and the script, Directing devised projects and Directing the production.

In your second and third terms, you will assist professional directors on projects, on site or digital productions, an original short film and an actors’ workshop at LAMDA. Over the past two years, these guests have included Natalie Abrahami, Ned Bennett, Giles Croft, Mike Longhurst, Roxanna Silbert and Lyndsey Turner During the spring break you will collaborate with LAMDA actors to devise an original piece of theatre – an opportunity to put into practice what you have learned and develop your dramaturgy skills. Recent graduates from this course have taken their devised work, in collaboration with actors and technicians from LAMDA, to the Edinburgh fringe and have achieved an off west end run. Your year will finish with you directing and realising a play of your choice in one of our performance spaces, to the general public and invited industry.
You will participate in seminars in text analysis and interpretation, and the aesthetics and processes particular to screen, as well as directing your fellow students in short scene studies.
The MA Directing course is collaborative from the start and has a real industry focus. In your first term, you will observe and participate in core LAMDA training alongside postgraduate acting students, working across the disciplines of acting, voice, movement and singing, in order to develop an understanding of the actor’s process.

Rotate specialisms before selecting one to focus on. You’ll cover the following topics: stage management, scenic construction, lighting and sound. Work alongside industry professionals and students from the BA and MFA Professional Acting courses in Senior production roles to put on public productions throughout the year. You’ll also take part in a 6 week industry placement.
Production & Technical Arts courses
The comprehensive vocational training at LAMDA will qualify you to be the best in the industry: capable, creative and highly sought-after by employers. It will prepare you for a career in theatre, film, television and beyond.
1 year BA top course2
In your first year of this technical theatre course, you’ll develop a firm grounding in production and technical arts. You’ll explore four core disciplines: stage management, scenic construction, lighting and sound, and you will be introduced to the elements involved in stage, screen and audio production.
In your second year, you’ll work alongside industry professionals and students from the BA and MFA Professional Acting courses in Senior production roles to put on public productions throughout the year. You can choose either to specialise in one area from this point, or keep your options open and work across a broad range of roles. The range of modules include options in Stage Management; Lighting; Production Sound; Scenic Construction; Production Management; LX Design; Sound Design; Screen & Audio.

You’ll cover the following topics: stage management, scenic construction, lighting and sound. Exploring the capabilities of LAMDA’s three professional theatre spaces and our range of workshop and studio facilities, you’ll work side-by-side with experienced industry professionals to create and run LAMDA’s productions. Throughout the course, you’ll develop your management skills, learn prop making, health and safety, first aid, fire safety and AutoCAD and WYSIWYG.

I, of course, had always known of LAMDA and its reputation as one of the top institutions of its kind. Upon beginning the course in January of 2021, I knew immediately that I was about to experience something unlike anything I’d known thus far.
Simply put, there’s no place else I’d rather be at present.
Overview of 8 week Shakespeare Summer School
The course is split into two projects, lasting 4 weeks each totalling 30 credits. You’ll explore a Shakespeare text and one of his contemporaries. Experience life in London as a drama student. You’ll be following an extensive timetable that replicates training at LAMDA and over the eight weeks you’ll be able to see productions, tour London and form lasting friendships with course mates.
This course is designed with international students in mind as a study abroad programme. Develop your practical skills in classical acting with this advanced 14 week training. The course culminates in a production with your cohort. You’ll be taught through core technique classes in acting, voice, singing, movement and physical theatre.
This summer short course is a practical, in-depth exploration of Shakespearean text and is suitable for students of all abilities. You don’t need vast previous acting experience to attend and it’s ideal if you’d like to learn more about Shakespeare.

The Courses & Tutors
Above all the passion for their work is clear to see, meet Rodney former Head of Drama School who hosts the US Auditions alongside Vik Sivalingam and teaches on our Semester and MA Classical courses. Rodney also annually tours the US delivering masterclasses in Shakespeare to budding young actors and theatre enthusiasts alike.
Our course leaders and practitioners are industry experts and working professionals. They ensure their teaching and direction is current and in line with what the industry expects, which means on a short course or full-time course you’ll have all the skills needed for professional work.
Through our classical work, we explore the texts within their historical context as well as a modern one. We ensure that the texts in our repertoire reflect those in our cohort and allow them to excel. Our repertoire of texts, whilst classical by source, are ever-changing to meet the needs of our current cohorts by exploring ‘classic’ human issues through the lens of our students and the world today.
We also regularly welcome guest directors, alumni and working practitioners to LAMDA to teach on our courses and direct our graduating actors’ productions. Our website provides the most up to date information on our course leaders, staff profiles and specific course content.

• The Carne Studio Theatre and Linbury Theatre are black box theatres which provide flexible and accessible performance spaces and seat 120 and 90 on the ground floor.
• We have recording and film equipment for voice overs, short films, self created work and digital showcase scenes.
LAMDA moved to its current home at Barons Court in 2003, with the new extension of extra studios and the Sainsbury’s Theatre opening its doors in 2017. The students train in the rehearsal rooms, workshops and state of the art theatre spaces on a daily basis. LAMDA has 16 rehearsal studios available, with the largest being 216 square metres, which directly reflect the theatre spaces. There are three dance studios with mirrored walls and ballet barres, and 13 of the studios are equipped with sprung vinyl flooring suitable for dance, movement and stage combat. The theatre spaces and two cafe bar areas play host to productions throughout the school year, and industry guests, friends/family and the general public are regularly invited to watch performances in person or via livestreams.
• The Sainsbury Theatre, built in 2017 is a proscenium arch theatre seating 220 with full height fly tower.

Performance opportunities
Global industry members are invited to every public production and film screening featuring our BA (hons) and MFA Professional Acting students in their final year. In addition to these, final year BA and MFA students also take part in an industry facing showcase both in the UK and US* alongside extra opportunities such as our Shakespeare in Schools tour alongside our Access and Widening Participation department.

Performance opportunities extend beyond live theatricial productions. Depending on the course taken there are varying opportunities to create films, new self-created work, develop voice-over acting and benefitting from our Audible Partnership. Those on the MA Classical and MA Directing programme have one public-facing production in the final term.
There are a number of performances both internal and external throughout the year at LAMDA, many of which are also live streamed. Our Acting students are supported by our Production and Technical Arts students on these productions as they act as stage managers, lighting and sound designers as well as costume teams and carpenters. These productions are often new works and are directed by working professionals. *For those wishing to pursue a career in the States after graduation we offer graduates, who are eligible to work in the US, the chance to be showcased to US industry, where LAMDA specifically targets New York and Los Angeles based casting directors, agents and managers to support entry into the US market, just as much as the UK.
Our graduates go on to collaborate, founding companies such as Mischief Theatre, produce self-created work, and excel in work and creative avenues across all sectors of the arts industry. Our Alumni
We’re continually working on new ways to develop the connection between LAMDA and our alumni. Further examples of this include the launch of MishMash festival which celebrates the work in progress pieces curated by LAMDA alumni and their contemporaries. We have also developed an alumni platform to re-connect cohorts across the world in a digital community. LAMDA also regularly engages in alumni development activity as artists in their own right, supporting them as actors, photographers and tutors at LAMDA with the overall aim of carrying on LAMDA’s vision beyond the course and training itself.
Support beyond LAMDA
LAMDA’s training is about longevity, not only working with students while they’re physically at the school, but beyond, in all their ventures. We’ve welcomed back alumn to teach on our short courses, host events and assist our current students. Our mentoring programme Genesis, allows our final-year MFA and BA (Hons) Professional Acting students to continue to be supported by LAMDA and a suitable mentor after they graduate.
From Shakespeare’s Globe to the West End, London has a huge amount to offer and is the theatrical capital. Based in south west London LAMDA is only 20 minutes from bustling central London, which means outside of your training you can benefit from its nightlife and culture.
Whether you’re studying on a short course for the Summer or you’re with us for longer, you’ll have lots of opportunities to socialise with your course mates in student led events and activities, see professional shows and experience what London life is like. We have exclusive access to discounted performances across London’s theatre scene, as well as being lucky enough to host events and workshops by inspirational creatives who often visit the school. Everyone gets nervous; it’s something which never goes away. It’s your job in an audition to show how you harness your nerves to bring a character to life for an audience.

Use your nerves.
As well as taking a moment to focus, listen to the instructions the panel give you. If they ask you to stand in a certain place or do your pieces in a certain order, make sure you follow the instruction. Listening is such an important part of acting so make sure you show that you understand that.
Connect with the panel.
Think about what your character was doing directly before we meet them in your monologue and how that is affecting them. Think about precisely where they are and what their relationship is to that place. Think about exactly who they are talking to, what they think of that person / those people, what they think the person / people think of them. What do they actively want to achieve by saying the things they say? Make sure you have fully harnessed your imagination to their situation. Make sure you’ve read the play and understand it.
Listen carefully to what the panel tell you.
Don’t be frightened to take a moment to make eye contact with the panel and regain your focus once you’re in the audition room. At drama school auditions certainly, the panel will have seen all manner of ways in which actors focus themselves, so don’t be afraid to do whatever it takes to do your best.

We have a Student Wellbeing Manager, Race Equality Officer, Lead Practitioner (Inclusive Practice) and Student Services Manager there to assist students and applicants. At LAMDA we’re not looking for particular qualifications or grades, as long as you’re passionate about developing your talent and skills. Our training is vocational, thorough and collaborative. We’re looking for a readiness to work and a capability to work as part of a group. We welcome applications from everyone.

What are the audition panel looking for?
What academic support will I receive?
Our student and academic services team provides access to a full range of appropriate academic support, including study skills support for learners with neurodiversities including dyslexia and dyspraxia, and other physical equipment or software needed. Student and academic services also arrange access to any specialist help needed to support your physical or mental wellbeing, such as physiotherapy, vocal health or counselling. You’ll also have free online support with our digital health and well-being platform.
LAMDA is not a classic campus college, however we will support you to find accommodation in London during the time you are training with us. If you’re training on a Semester programme with us, we book rooms in West London for you, if you’re training on a full time course you’re expected to find accommodation yourself.
