Few things excite me more than getting on a plane. Airports are electric with energy, and there’s nothing like the rush of passing through security like a champ and making it to the gate on time. I always splurge on a mocha latte and pack up my tech toys, looking forward to a little me time in my seat. Now, even with a 9-month-old, it thrills me to navigate the whole process with her strapped in the baby carrier — it’s just one more welcome challenge to the travel game. Experts recommend purchasing flights four to six weeks out for the best deal, so if you’re considering a 2016 destination wedding and honeymoon, you’ve still got plenty of time to book. And we’re here to help — we’ve rounded up new direct routes (“Flight Tracker,” p. 16) and pinpointed this year’s most talked-about wedding locales, where new flights and hotels meet celebrity buzz (“Hot Sixteen for 2016,” p. 48). As always, we’re here to help you pull of your dream day without blowing your budget. Find tips on free scouting trips (“Deal Seeker,” p. 26), dress rentals that can save you up to 88 percent (!) (“Gowns for Hire,” p. 34) and need-to-know honeymoon hacks (“Honeymoon Hopping,” p. 58). Congratulations on your engagement! We guarantee your destination wedding will be an incredible experience. Now sit back, relax and enjoy the flight. ! P.58

As part of the United States, Puerto Rico is happily among those that do. THE PROPOSAL

THE WEDDING

THE HONEYMOON

GRAND CAYMAN The underwater Amphitrite statue in front of Sunset House, a 50-room scuba-centric hotel, has blessed nearly a dozen proposals. The landmark simplifies ring hiding (under the tail fluke is popular), and little planning is involved, aside from penciling the big question on an underwater slate. The shore dive is so easy, says resort manager Keith Sahm, “Seventy-five percent of the time, we find out after the fact — but our ‘yes’ rate is 100 percent.” From $154.

GRENADA For couples wanting to share both their big day and scuba’s big thrills with loved ones, Sandals LaSource Grenada on Pink Gin Beach is a smart pick: Certified divers enjoy two free underwater tours daily. If your guests have never tried scuba, they can swim along reefs, wrecks and an underwater sculpture garden after taking a $90 resort course. The temporary certification is good at any Sandals or Beaches resort for a year. From $340 per person, all-inclusive.

FIJI At Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, the 25 thatched bures (huts) are mere steps from the water’s edge, and honeymooners can be delivered by boat to remote beaches for private picnics. The resort’s location, on Savusavu Bay on the island of Vanua Levu, offers quick access to forests of soft corals for divers. For an even more memorable experience, book a night dive for two with the resort’s resident marine biologist.

WorldMags.net QUESTION

How do we set a time line for our wedding day?

THE PRO Stacy Mulcare, founder of Ceremonies of St. John, has planned destination weddings in the U.S. Virgin Islands since 1996.

Begin with the time you’d like your ceremony to start, then work backward. I determine when the wedding party will depart for the ceremony and the travel duration. Then I’m able to figure out when the hair and makeup appointments must finish up and still leave enough time for the wedding party to dress. Communication with your planner is key; it’s their job to know the sunset schedule if you plan to marry outside in the evening. In the USVI, we don’t have dusk. The sun sets behind the island of St. Thomas, so we have to account for the loss of light when scheduling postwedding photos. Recently, one of my couples wanted a sunset ceremony and expected to continue the photographs on the beach after sunset. I explained the lighting on the beach, showed them the area where the ceremony would take place, then reconfigured the time line to work with their vision.”

QUESTION

What can we do to help loved ones who aren’t able to travel to our wedding still feel included?

by HOL LY V. KA PHE R R

What enclosures should we include in our invitations for a destination wedding? QUESTION

THE PRO With 15 years of experience, Antonia Christianson is head planner of Antonia Christianson Events in Virginia Beach and Southern California. We always tell our clients: The more details they include, the better! Don’t assume your guests will know what you know about your wedding location. Some musts: Include the closest airports, along with their codes, for easier flight bookings (this helps with reserving rental cars and transfers as well). Let your guests know if additional transportation is required from the airport to the venue, if there’s a shuttle, and the cost, if any. A packing list, or a list of activities you’d like your guests to partake in, can be helpful too. You

24 DESTINATIONWEDDINGMAG.COM

wouldn’t want guests to miss that waterfall hike because they didn’t pack the right shoes. If you don’t want to include all of this info in your invitation suite, send a special package to guests who RSVP yes. While a wedding website is certainly beneficial in advance, it won’t help guests onsite if your destination is remote and Internet or cell signals are spotty (or nonexistent). Consider what you’d appreciate if you were traveling, then pass that on to your guests. When our lead coordinator, Carolyn, married her longtime love in the Caribbean, they sent reminder postcards throughout the months before the event to up the excitement. In one of the enclosures, they sent nautical knots for their guests to tie to their luggage so the suitcases would be easy to spot at baggage claim.”

THE PRO Based in the Cayman Islands, Jo Anne Brown has planned weddings in the Caribbean for 23 years with her company, Celebrations Weddings & Events.

One of the realities of a destination wedding is that not all of your guests might be able to attend, but there are ways to include them. Many venues now have the capability to live-stream the ceremony and parts of the reception to a website so that absent family and friends can log in and see it all as it happens. A friend of one couple I worked with couldn’t make it to the Cayman Islands, but, thanks to modern technology, she was able to give a speech via FaceTime! Another idea: If your wedding has a special hashtag, mail it with a creative ‘wedding-guest kit’ surprise to be opened on your wedding day, and include photo props, favors and champagne.”

LAUNCH YOUR MISSION TO SCORE BIG WEDDING SAVINGS. by JAK E E ME N artwork by IKE R AY ESTA RÁ N

Regardless of the scale of your celebration, it’s going to be a major outlay of cash. That’s why it’s your mission — nay, your duty — to search out as many freebies as you can. Luckily, you’ll find plenty of opportunities out there to start pocketing those perks — once you know where to look.

Æ

The Free Scouting Trip Æ Scouting trips are the ultimate freebie, designed to “entice the couple to come try before they buy,” says Jim Augerinos of Perfect Honeymoons & Holidays. Occasionally a resort will ofer free nights upfront, but more commonly, “They’ll credit the amount spent on the prewedding site visit to the cost of the wedding.” Cynthia Salcedo of Weddings by Velas Resorts in Mexico says a scouting trip allows couples to personalize each aspect of their celebration by meeting with vendors, sampling menus and going beyond Photoshopped pictures to “learn 1

more about what the resort can actually pull of.” Velas Resorts ofers two comped nights upfront if you sign the contract in advance, allowing couples who already made their decision to enjoy a planning getaway; otherwise, they credit 50 percent back for those who book after. Similarly, at Paradisus properties in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, the Love At First Site package ofers a full credit for a three-night scouting trip when you book a wedding package. 2 The Upgrade Æ You’ve booked your wedding, but don’t stop angling for more. “You’re dropping a ton of cash,” says Augerinos. “The resort knows that, so they have to treat you well.” That means upgrades and other potential perks, such as spa certificates, dining credits, free rooms (depending on the size of your block), welcome amenities and so on. Salcedo says there are huge benefits for big parties at Velas Resorts: “Couples

booking 30 double suites for two nights will enjoy an elaborate and completely free wedding.” That’s a free wedding — if you can guarantee 30 rooms booked for two nights. Velas Resorts also ofers deals on weekday weddings, including upgrades and a free suite for every eight paid suites. 3 The Return Trip Æ You scouted, you upgraded, you said I do. Now you want to go back. Good thing many properties provide incentives. “Typically, the resort will give a certificate to use toward a return trip to celebrate the anniversary,” says Augerinos. For example, Saint Lucia’s Jade Mountain ofers a $500 anniversary certificate as part of its Total Romance honeymoon package. Resort chains such as Hyatt provide even more flexibility: “You’ll get a couple of free nights to use at any of the company’s resorts,” says Augerinos, “and you’ll earn reward points for everything you spend.” You gotta spend money to make money, amirite?

Say I do under the courtyard’s stone archways, enveloped by twisting banyan tree roots. Then feast on local dishes like guanabana mousse and lime soup with fried tortillas. But only the brave should dare try the best habanero sauce known to man. Rooms from $250; weddings from $70 per person.

Imagine a modern five-star resort juxtaposed inside a 16th-century, 500-acre plantation ruin ... in the middle of the tropical rainforest. Walk down a candlelit aisle in the vestiges of an ancient chapel draped in moss and vines. Then invite guests to cocktails around the pool, set among the remnants of stone pillars and factory walls, with the area’s famous woven hammocks suspended inches above the water. Guests can stay in the 12 original colonial villas, but save Room 11 — with its massive platform daybed and sexy soaking tub in a private garden — for you and your amor. At First Sight

At least half of couples are tossing the tradition of not seeing each other before the wedding, says Jason Martin of Concept Photography. Why? “Having a first look allows the couple the chance to react, talk and embrace in private, and it also gives the photographer and videographer the opportunity to capture the moment from all angles.” There are also practical advantages. “With destination weddings, most ceremonies are scheduled close to sunset, and there’s very little time for natural-light pictures after the ceremony,” says Martin. “Having a first look gives you plenty of time for pictures beforehand.”

Æ

28 DESTINATIONWEDDINGMAG.COM

If you’re still on the fence, think of the memory you’ll make. Martin says his favorite reactions are laughter, tears and the inability to stop looking at and touching the other person. “It’s usually pretty awesome!” Convinced? Here’s how to pull it of. TIMING IS EVERYTHING Æ “If all of the group pictures are going to be taken after the ceremony during the cocktail hour, we usually schedule the first look for about an hour before the ceremony.” IN THE PHOTOGRAPHER WE TRUST Æ “We choose the location based on the best available light and the ability to isolate the couple. Long docks make for lovely pictures, as well as anywhere with pops of

color, like bougainvillea or painted walls. Tree-branch-canopied streets always work beautifully. The trick is to know what light is the most flattering and to be flexible.” REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE Æ “A ‘first touch’ is a great alternative for a couple who wants to share a moment before the ceremony but still wants to save seeing each other for the aisle. They usually hold hands and speak to each other on either side of a door or corner of a wall. Toni and Troy (shown) did a playful first touch around the reception tent, then did a first look. They had incredible natural chemistry, so once we set them up, they did the rest, and it was magic.” — Erika Hueneke

MIMI AND MICKEY HEAD TO HAWAII’S NORTH SHORE FOR THEIR SERENE LOVEFEST.

photography by REBECCA ARTHURS

Mickey and I are from Denmark, but we met and fell in love on Oahu while I was studying and Mickey was working there. We couldn’t imagine having our wedding anywhere but in Hawaii. We searched for a secluded venue that showcased Hawaii’s raw beauty while also fitting our budget. The Ke Iki Beach Bungalows were perfect for our 20-person wedding — far from the crowds but full of that infectious Hawaiian energy. Since we live so far away, finding a fantastic planner was key. Aloha Bridal Connections was so organized; they had great vendor recommendations and did everything possible to make sure our December 3, 2014, event went smoothly. Two days before the wedding, we hosted a booze cruise with Na Hoku II Catamaran Cruises in Waikiki so everyone could get to know each other. We also joined guests on a hike to Diamond Head and a visit to Manoa Falls. I walked down the aisle to ukulele music, played by Jason Midro from Ono Kine Entertainment, and Kelvin Ho, a traditional Hawaiian spiritual guide, oiciated. Our cocktail hour and reception were held above the beach on the front lawn. Annie Gerstenberger, the wife of Ke Iki’s property manager, prepared an AsianHawaiian-fusion bufet with gyoza and Hawaiian-style barbecue. The next day, Stage Restaurant hosted a postwedding dinner. The best part was celebrating with everyone around us in such a beautiful place.” — Mimi Tran Kromann-Jensen, as told to Allyson Reedy

MARIA AND STEVEN CREATE THE DIY WEDDING OF THEIR DREAMS ON TORTOLA.

photography by LINDSAY VANN P H OTOGRAP H Y

The sun was starting to set, and the speakers were playing ‘She’s Royal’ by Tarrus Riley as I walked down a grassy aisle to an ocean-view bluf, where Steven stood waiting for me. It was March 21, 2015, and 56 of our closest family members and friends formed a half-circle around us, smiling widely as we said our own vows. Our friend, Tyler Harris, oiciated. The setting was Stanley’s Welcome Villas and Carrie’s Island Comfort Inn, where we stayed; afterward, we walked to De Wedding Beach Bar & Restaurant for the reception. Christina Tatum Designs (one of my bridesmaids) decorated the space with wildflowers, painted starfish and multicolored glasses from home. Our story started four years prior when I moved to Jacksonville Beach, Florida, for law school and met Steven, a member of the Navy, through a co-worker. He popped the question by waking me up at 5 a.m. for sunrise. We love to travel and had been to Tortola several times, so we knew it was our spot. Our guests arrived Wednesday, and we hosted a full-day catamaran/snorkeling trip for everyone with Mystique Charters. All the men wore Hawaiian shirts to a rehearsal dinner of ribs and chicken at Quito’s Gazebo. Our reception at De’s turned into a dance party and continued with barhopping until 4 a.m. The next day, we drank mimosas and sat on the beach. It was such a wonderful weekend — like being in college again with all of your best friends, except it was five years after we’d graduated.” — Maria Coutu, as told to Katie Morell

JENNIFER AND MIKE TRADE MIAMI’S BUSTLE FOR A LAID-BACK CELEBRATION BY THE BEACH.

2

photography by TOH GOUTTENOIRE

Mike and I met while working at the same hotel on South Beach; a few months later, we fell completely in love during a weekend trip to Costa Rica. After he proposed, we knew we wanted to share our special place with loved ones. I tirelessly searched online for a planner who matched my ‘boho beach’ style and found Aimee Monihan of Tropical Occasions. She helped us pick Pangas Beach Club, a casual restaurant in Las Mareas development in Tamarindo, on the country’s Pacific coast. Aimee and I worked together on everything from food to flowers to fireworks for a year leading up to the wedding. Guests arrived in Costa Rica on Sunday morning. We all stayed in Las Mareas’ six onsite villas and spent time lounging on the beach, horseback riding, zip-lining and exploring Tamarindo before a rehearsal barbecue on Monday at the Black Stallion ranch. On Tuesday, April 14, 2015, we wed during a quick, lighthearted sunset ceremony on the beach. The highlight of our reception was dinner. My heart was set on a long table by the ocean and a bonfire, and we had just that — with fresh, locally sourced mahimahi, coconut curry chicken, wild-rice yucca puree and so much more. Afterward, we danced and partied. We have great beaches in Miami, but we never would have been able to create the relaxed, bohemian vibe we experienced in Costa Rica. It’s such a magical place; we could see ourselves living there someday.” — Jennifer Bond Irizarry, as told to Amy Cassell

GEORGIANS TAYLEA AND ROBIN FIND PEACE AND QUIET IN THE MAYA TOWN OF TULUM.

photography by MONI & ADRI P H OTOGRAP H Y

Robin and I met in 2005 at Newton Medical Center in Covington, Georgia, where he was an anesthesiologist and I was a surgical technician. We were engaged in early April 2015 and married less than two months later on May 23 in laid-back Tulum, Mexico, our favorite retreat from our high-stress jobs. We found our planners, Regina Crosby-Atkins and Krista Jon of Crosby + Jon Design, online. They recommended the boutique hotel Casa Violeta for our ceremony and the chic Sanara Tulum wellness retreat for a crazy-healthy organic reception dinner. We rented a 16-bedroom beachfront villa in Akumal through airbnb .com, where we stayed with our 30 guests. Party Planet Productions provided transportation for the 30-minute drive to Tulum. Guests toured Maya ruins, snorkeled and relaxed before Friday’s rehearsal dinner at Tacolum, a taco truck in a VW bus with flowing margaritas and lots of open-air seating. Then on Saturday at sunset, they gathered on Casa Violeta’s beach for a traditional Maya ceremony performed in English, Spanish and Mayan. The shaman blew into a large shell, and we tossed flowers into the ocean as an ofering to Mother Earth. After cocktail hour, the group enjoyed a four-course lobster or shrimp dinner and a little splurge — esponjoso de chocolate cake — at Sanara Tulum. We danced to the Gypsy Jazz Quartet. What could have been one of the most stressful days of my life turned out fun and stress-free.” — Taylea Fowler, as told to Susana Youngsteadt

also hop in a helicopter for a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding vineyards and valleys. Or consider a trek to the Andes Mountains with ChileMontaña; a private guide will curate a mountain-climbing expedition that matches your experience level. DAY 3-4

LIMA, PERU

Cruise around Santiago on a morning bike tour with La Bicicleta Verde, checking out local markets, the Plaza de Armas and the Chilean National Zoo. Then head to Peru. Thanks to a two-hour time diference, a mid-afternoon flight from Santiago still gets you into Lima plenty early. Stay at the glitzy Belmond

HONEYMOON HOPPING STEP 3 Æ CHECK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELF “Verify your passports as soon as you start planning. Renew ASAP if you need to. Many countries require that your passport be valid at least six months before expiration to enter. If you’re changing your name and going on your honeymoon right after your wedding, make sure your reservations are in your maiden name.” — LM

Huacachina sand dunes to test your sandboarding skills. Even more

exhilarating is the dune-buggy ride in and out of the desert, zipping up and over those massive peaks with twists and turns that put most roller coasters to shame. Clink glasses over a desert sunset at the Huacachina oasis, a fertile settlement in the middle of the dunes. The next day, take an aerial tour of the massive, mysterious Nazca Lines geoglyphs with Alas Peruanas. Consider adding an excursion to Islas Ballestas, where speedboats whisk visitors around the nature reserve to spy sea lions, Humboldt penguins and flocks of cormorants. Overnight at Hotel Libertador Paracas. DAY 8-9

CUSCO, PERU

Return to Lima for the quick one-hour flight to Cusco. Your home base: JW Marriott El Convento Cusco, a transformed 16th-century convent. Stroll arm in arm through the romantic, uplit Plaza de Armas — but take your time. Cusco’s elevation of 11,000 feet quickly takes its toll. (Pro-tip: Ask the locals for coca leaves to chew. They’ll help with any discomfort caused by the altitude.) Sample the impressive pisco selection at Museo del Pisco, and nibble charcuterie made from alpaca and guinea pig (when in Cusco, right?). In the morning, explore the cathedral and the Qorikancha Inca temple. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: SHUTTERSTOCK; JW MARRIOTT EL CONVENTO CUSCO; KYLE HALE PHOTOGRAPHY; JAMES MOES (2); SHUTTERSTOCK

DAY 10-13

Miraflores Park, surrounded by nightlife. Top-class dining awaits at Malabar, or opt for Astrid & Gastón, consistently named one of

the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. You can also tour the country’s culinary scene at Restaurant Huaca Pucllana, amid pre-Inca ruins. Later, take a couples surf lesson (the city is perched on a clif with tons of breaks below); book in advance at Pukana Surf School. DAY 5-7

SOUTHERN PERU

Hop a southbound bus for the four-hour drive to Ica, epicenter of Peru’s pisco country. As of February 2016, you can stay at Pisco Porton’s distillery, Hacienda La Caravedo, which also happens to house private villas and a sexy pool. Trot

MACHU PICCHU, PERU Catch the morning’s first PeruRail three-hour train ride to Machu Picchu. Hike through one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and put the camera away to properly appreciate the majesty after snapping one sacred selfie. Check in to the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel right at the citadel, rising at dawn for a huge perk: a private sunrise at this Inca sanctuary before the throngs of tourists arrive. Venture to the surrounding Sacred Valley and the less-touristy sites in Ollantaytambo, then back to Machu Picchu to try the Huayna Picchu trail, a three-hour side circuit beyond the main route. Hop the train back to Cusco for a final evening, swapping tales with other couples at an expat bar. Tomorrow, you’ll return to Lima both enriched and exhausted, en route to a red-eye home. — JE

8 a.m. ALL YOU CAN EAT Drag yourselves away from your swim-up suite at Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall, an adults-only (yay!) all-inclusive resort, and toddle to the breakfast buffet next door at Hyatt Ziva, where you can try Jamaican specialties like ackee and saltfish. Or just get an omelet. Either way.

Back at Hyatt Zilara, walk down to the beach and veer to the left, away from the action. There, the Zen Spa’s beach Jacuzzi room is base camp for relaxation. Jamaica’s high humidity turns this room into a steamy hydrotherapy circuit, with tiled loungers and an oversize Jacuzzi.

11 a.m.

5 p.m. ALL ABOARD

GET HIGH Surprised to see so many mountains on this beach-lover’s island? The Blue Mountains are vast, and Jamaica Zipline Adventure Tours boasts the longest zip-line in the Caribbean, with five cables from 250 to 1,600 feet long.

Smooth jazz, smoother booze and plenty of seclusion headline a two-hour sunset sail on the Dreamer Catamaran, which departs on Thursdays and Saturdays. Toast each other with bubbly or rum punch at the open bar as you cruise the bay, serenaded by saxophone.

MONTEGO BAY Jamaica, DWH readers’ no. 1 honeymoon spot, offers something irie for every hour.

You’re not in Paris, but you’ll feel like it at the Petit PariZ restaurant at Hyatt Zilara’s dining and nightlife village. The standout specialty: an old-school martini cart manned by a white-gloved server who mixes up concoctions from the menu of 11 signature cocktails. Pair your pick with coq au vin.

9 P.M. DANCE FEVER Cross the promenade to Union JackZ, the hotel’s British pub, for gin and tonics aplenty and dancing to ’80s and ’90s faves spun by a live DJ. Need a breather? Challenge your boo to a game of pool, checkers or darts in one of the backrooms.

12 p.m.

HOT STUFF The jerk chicken at Scotchie’s is legendary, but the sausages are the untold stars of the spicy show. Jerk-seasoned meats have quite a kick on their own, but dowsed in the proprietary Scotch bonnet sauce, they require more than a few Red Stripes to quell the heat.

12 a.m.

SOAK WITH YOUR SWEET Ask your butler to draw a midnight bath for two. Then order dessert (another one!) and have it sent up to share.

2 p.m.

CRUISIN’ TOGETHER This ain’t no white water; picture rustic handmade bamboo rafts gliding down a calm river. Float along a 3-mile stretch of the Martha Brae with guides who point out landmarks and native plants along the way. If it’s clear, hop out for a swim halfway through.

FROM TOP: Swim up to the IslandZ bar at Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall. Take a walk on the Hyatt’s mile-long shore. More than 14 pools outline the hotel’s deck. A rafting trip for two on the Martha Brae is Jamaica’s answer to Venetian gondolas. Irie essentials: Red Stripe and jerk chicken.

ow that you’re rocking the ring, it’s time to assemble your personal team of wedding pros. First things first: Hire a planner. No matter how organized or detailed you are, a wedding planner will pay for herself — from the money she’ll save you by knowing the best vendors to the stress she’ll alleviate from day one. Destination planners know the terrain, speak the language and can navigate your locale’s culture. Choosing the right photographer is also key: Once your big day is over, your photos will be the most valued keepsakes to remind you of your experience in paradise. Here are vendors seasoned in planning from afar — find the right one so you can get hitched without a hitch.

OVER BOARD A DWH editor hovers above neon coral on a trash-thedress honeymoon shoot.

“Holly and Clif were up for anything. Not many couples would get up at 5 a.m. for a 45-minute boat ride and then be talked into stand-up paddle boarding in the shark-infested waters of Beqa lagoon. At first, Holly was hesitant to stand up on the board because she wasn’t sure if her dress would be too heavy soaking wet. But with a little coaxing from Gitte, who had climbed on top of the speedboat to get the shot, she did it. Combined with the hues of blue reflected by the sunrise, it was a spectacular moment.”
