INTRODUCTION Field trip study is a compulsory subject that must be taken by every UTAR Architecture student. It provides such an opportunity for students to experience and learn architecture throughout the trip by visiting oversea country. In our trip, we spent 11 days in Taiwan to Taipei, Taichung, and Yilan. This is a golden opportunity to enhance the communication skills, leadership skills, teamwork skills, public speaking skills among the architecture student. As well as build the bond with the University of Taiwan (National Taipei University of Technology, University of TungHai and Tamkang University).

Taipei, Day 2 [24th September 2019] North Gate 承恩門(北門) The first place we visited once we reached Taiwan was North gate, We were guided to the Taipei city landmark area, Zhongxiao Road (忠孝路) and briefed by the a lecturer from National Taipei University of Technology. The area are spacious and people friendly. The gate, designated as a national historic building, was built in 1882 and is the only one of the city’s five gates that has retained its original look.

Mitsui House 三金仓库

Figure 5 : Mitsui Warehouse (Source: photo taken by Lau Chi Ying)

This double story building of red brick can be known as Memory of Warehouse( 记忆仓库) was built during 1913-1914. Recording the Taiwanese Aborigines and Taiwanese Overseas Chinese in the development of Taipei, Mountain and Forest Resources of Taiwan (台湾山林), Water Route (水路运 输) , and also some history about The Early Qing Dynasty (清领前期) , Zheng Dynasty Period (郑氏时期) , Japanese Colonial Period (日治时期) , The Primitive Period (山林治理) , and Dutch Colonial Period (荷兰时期) etc.

Figure 6, 7, 8, 9 : Explaination board, terrain model, and historic building element. (Source: photo taken by Lau Chi Ying)

Something I like about this building is that it provides Virtual Reality (VR) experience and message board at the first floor level for good experiencing to the visitors as well as the tourists like us who do not have much understanding in the Taiwan history. We can also provide feedback and comments at the spaces provided to have an interaction with this historical and memorable place. Addition of Seismic isolation system to the Mitsui Warehouse as to avoid the impact of vehicle vibration caused by adjcent traffic lanes, and keep the possibility of relocation of the Mitsui Warehouse, 20 sets of LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing) and 4 sets of rigid roller bearings were specifically added to the seismic isolation system during the second phase of the restoration project.

The basic structure was changed to reinforced concrete beams in order to ensure the safety of the building, resulting in the upgraded seismic resistance from 5 to 7. Dihua Street 迪化街

Figure 10, 11, 12 & 13 : Dihua Street and the historical buildings. (Source: photo taken by Lau Chi Ying)

Dihua Street house has unique characteristics. Street houses in the Qing Dynasty were mainly divided into Southern Fujian style and imitation Western style. The style of the building and the materials used reflect the technological progress and human resources of the foreigners who ruled Taiwan in the past. The historical building of Modernist architecture, Baroque architecture, Minnan style building such as Lianhua Food (联华贸易), Yihetai (怡和泰本草), Qianyuan Shaoyao (乾元蔘藥行), Lin Wuhu Ancestor (林五湖祖厝) etc. The preserved historical buildings are built with red brick, artificial stone, facing brick, hilltop, and wall decoration.

The next destination we arrived at URS 127(知识客厅) from Mitsui Warehouse where are just located at the front of the Lianhua Food (联华贸易). This street served as a platform for the local youngster to reuse urban old community space to cultivate creative talents so that the story of this land can be remembered through their innovative culture creation.

Taipei, Day 3 [25th September 2019] National Taipei University of Technology 台北科技大学 National Taipei University of Technology has create a green “giant tree” landmark gate, replacing the fence with an ecological moat that can attracts live fish to spawn, and the roof also provides birds a habitat. The campus has become a metropolis’ ecological relay station.

Figure 17 :Main entrance of National Taipei University of Technology . (Source:https://www.cotechinc.com/green-construction-materials/?lang=zh-hant)

In order to create an ecological campus, the budding period of the ecological campus was in 1980-1999. Decoration of stone and water features in the banyan garden and other corners of the campus, planted the salamanders on the walls and campus also consider about the permeable paving. All of this works contribute in creating an external image of an ecological campus.

National Taipei University of Technology applied an Automatic irrigation system to water the plants outside the campus. It was good to design such convenience system but I think it was been applied improperly in term of the location. Although it is said that the automatic watering system can moisten the plants and lower down the campus temperature, this system may spray the pedestrian.

Chapter 文房 The company repair the Chapter is based on the principle of repairing the old and keeping pace with the times. Build the most beautiful public welfare library, Wenfang. This building is a Japanese-style house at the end of the Japanese occupation. The wall is made of bamboo-clad clay walls with rain shower boards, the roof trusses are made of wood, and the roof is paved with Japanese-style black tiles.

Qidong Street Japanese Houses 齊東街日式宿舍 Traditional Japanese-style wooden building located in no. 25, 27 Section 2, Jinan Road. The main structure is divided into three parts: the foundation, the wall and the roof. The roof form is a "storage building" roof.

Building repairs began in January 2011. The construction of the No. 25 building is based on the principle of restoring the old historical features and is biased towards a restoration method. The No. 27 building also maintains the old style, but the interior space is matched with the future use function, and is more flexibly adjusted and modified in the way of reuse. The No.25 building remain the style of the original Japanese-style dormitory was preserved. The recovery strategy is to preserve the old concept, ‘To maximize protection and respect the original structure, materials and construction methods’ . After the restoration is completed, the building space in building No.25 will be used as a cabinet for storing quilts and clothes, and converted into a heritage display cabinet, supplemented by small chandeliers, and the showcase will be shaped into a poetic theme theater for the public. Light music. Enjoy the atmosphere of the historical space and the charm of the poet's manuscript. Compared with Building No. 25, Building No. 27 has changed a lot. When it is repaired, it has the largest retention. At the same time, it has the design of open and flexible use space. The space under the seat is dug into an open space and the ceiling is opened to show its wood structure. The combination of form and repair of old and new materials. After the restoration of the open space of the No. 27 building, in addition to the original tatami, the people can also sit on the wooden chair dug down and enjoy a relaxing literary time. The entrance to the entrance hall selects sofas, coffee tables, carpets and standing lights. Ingeniously, there is a dialogue with the poetry building space for the public to talk about poetry and poetry leisurely.

Huashan creative park 1914 華山 1914 文化創意產業園區

Huashan creative park 1914 is an example of old land refurbishment in Taiwan. This place was originally function as an aromatic wine Corporation Shuzo plant, authoritarian sake , Phalaenopsis , ginseng wine during the 7th year of Japanese rule (1918). The refurbishment work done by the planting of many green features at the wall and the surrounding along the park. The abandoned buildings was further under restoration and reused to make it as souvenir shops as one of the tourist destination in Taipei. People can come to this place to snap some pictures at the green wall and also purchase some souvenirs from the shops.

Taichung, Day 4 [26th September 2019] University of TungHai 东海大学 The Luce Memorial Chapel 路思义教堂

Figure 35 & 36 : Exterior and interior view. (Source: photo taken by Lim Chen Hee & Lau Chi Ying) This Chapel really inspired me because the location and the concept design of this building is so interesting. It is the central landmark on first private campus in Taiwan, TungHai University. It is an example of modernist architecture in Taichung and it has the title of the most beautiful campus in Taichung. The most well-known spot on the campus is the "路思义教堂". Its shaped like prayer hands, quietly praying for students and classes. During the period, the students shuttled, and the holiday was like a weaving tourist. It was more a picture of parent-child interaction and sharing of joy. The diamond shape interior wall provide high tension for the structure (Figure 3). The interior wall can be separated into 3 parts. The upper, middle and the bottom. The thickness increasing from 9cm, 9-12cm to 60cm accordingly. The material chosen to make the facade has a reason behind. Not only provide protection, waterproofing, and stain prevention. The material can also done the best work on curved surfaces. The tent-like conoid structure is to allow the natural light to come in.

We had our lunch at the TungHai University canteen in the afternoon. I sit at the table seat by the window. I can feel the interaction of the interior spaces

and the exterior spaces by looking out the window through a worm perspective from the interior at the plants and trees, and the people walking around. Wenli Avenue 文理大道

Wenli Avenue: Wenli Avenue is the most famous walkway on campus, and it looks comfortable and green. A liberal arts college, and a science college, and an administrative center, are set up on both sides. The concept of open space, as well as the platform ramps of Japanese temples, further integrate the continuity and tolerance of Chinese culture.

The upside-down "big iron pot" is the capsule of time, it is a sculpture of time, which stores the past, present and future of Tunghai campus, and records the pursuit, dedication and hope of faith by the seniors. Taichung, Day 5 [27th September 2019] Rainbow Village 彩虹眷村 When we come to Rainbow Village, we can see lovely graffiti and colorful blocks, as if coming to the fairy tale world. These graffiti are all from the hand of Grandpa Huang Yongfu.

National Taichung Theater 台中國家歌劇院 "A good design allows a person to feel their own freedom within them." A quote by Toyo Ito who the architect of this building that the enigmatic cave space can drawn the natural sunlight as well as the sounds and images of wind and water that compose this cozy environment (En.npac-ntt.org, 2019). The National Taichung Theater itself is like a music box. In addition

apply green concept and construction internally as well as externally to give rise to a natural order. Promoting symbiotic relationship between the natural world and humans. The National Taichung Theater consisting 5 floors levels where B2 and B1 are the Black Box and Outdoor Theater, and parking lot accordingly. 1st floor and 2nd floor are the Corner Salon (T1-1), and Grand Theater (T2-1) and Playhouse (T2-2). The 5th floor and 6th floor are both Tutu Gallery (T5-1) and Sky Garden (T6-1).

Gaomei Wetlands 高美溼地

Figure 51 :Gaomei Wetlands. (Source: Lau Chi Ying)

The reason for the formation is that due to the establishment of the Gaomei Sea Embankment, silt has gradually accumulated over the decades. Gaomei Wetland is the best place for various Benthic organism, fish and shellfish, birds, and waterfowl to inhabit. Gaomei Wetland is a famous bird watching mecca and a famous sunset viewing spot in Taichung. This wetland has a variety of habitats, such as tidal streams, grasses, sand, gravel, and mudflats, so it can breed a large variety of considerable benthic organisms in a small environment. Tourists visiting here must not walk on the wetlands, otherwise the vegetation here will be destroyed. Secondly, when watching the sunset in Gaomei Wetland, we should also pay attention to whether the weather is sunny. If it is cloudy, we must think carefully, because the Gaomei Wetland on a cloudy day is windy and not observable.

Taipei, Day 6 [28th September 2019] Shen Ji New Village 审计新村 The second day at Taichung in the morning we went to Shen Ji New Village (审计新村) but unfortunately not yet open there. It gave me the same feeling when I was at Huashan creative park 1914. Both of them remain their original local architecture.

Figure 52 & 53 : Some views of Shen Ji New Village. (Source: http://qidong-poetrysalon.nmtl.gov.tw/)

The unique audited village near the road is the old dormitory with a history of nearly half a century. The audited village is one of the third batch of dormitories of the Taiwan Provincial Government in Taichung City. After the frozen province, the idle space has been abandoned for many years. Although the area is only 0.52 hectares, it is located near Taimei Qinmei Green Park Road. Therefore, it shows the uniqueness of the audited new village and the old buildings are full of traces of the times.

Figure 54 : Shop lots at Shen Ji New Village. (Source: http://qidong-poetrysalon.nmtl.gov.tw/)

Today, through the government's re-planning, it has successfully transformed into a youth entrepreneurship base. Through the youth's vitality and creativity, it excites a dizzying space charm and unique atmosphere. Miyahara Ophthalmology 宫原眼科 At the time of the Japanese rule, Miyahara Ophthalmology was an eye hospital opened by Dr. Takeo Miyahara, and it has become one of the must-see tourist spots in Taichung.

Figure 55 : Miyahara Ophthalmology exterior view. (Source: http://www.mafengwo.cn/photo/poi/5479701_409536828.html)

Figure 56 & 57 : The corridor view and the interior view. (Source: http://www.mafengwo.cn/photo/poi/5479701_409536828.html)

Miyahara Ophthalmology still retains the architectural appearance and towers left over from the Japanese rule, and the interior decoration is undergoing major renovation. It is no longer a place to check the eyes, but to sell cakes, ice products, and souvenirs all over Taiwan. Farewell to the past, the fate of the old house was successfully reshaped.

Ruyi Sunny Cake 一如邑堂

Figure 58, 59 & 60 : The exterior and interior of Taichung Ruyi Sunny Cake . (Source: https://blog.xuite.net/t0424520917/blog)

We went to Ruyi Sunny Cake (一如邑堂) as our fifth destination at about 3.30 pm. We stay around 40 minutes over there. It is the famous Sunny Cake souvenirs shop in Taichung where another branch of Ruyi Sunny Cake is in Taipei Ximending area. What special about this souvenirs shop is that it won the best Sunny Cake( 太 陽 餅 ) around the world. The Sunny Cake selling here got first place in the national competition for four consecutive years (2013.2014.2017.2018).

Da Zhen Feng Yang Umbrella Wenchuang Theme Pavilion 大振丰雨洋伞 文创馆 After bought souvenirs and tasted the world's first sun cake in Taiwan, the sixth destination we went at the sixth day was at Da Zhen Feng Yang Umbrella Wenchuang Theme Pavilion (大振丰雨洋伞文创馆), Taichung, Beibei. It was the Taiwan's first umbrella brand shop located at the exit of Taihang Expressway and Taiyuan Interchange.

In addition to the full range of boutique umbrellas, this also provides the surrounding goods, such as a full set of bags, cosmetic bags and a folding umbrella, emphasizing that the surface of the bag is made of umbrella cloth, the whole is water-repellent.

Taipei - Yilan, Day7 [29th September 2019] Jioufen Old Street 九份老街

Figure 66 & 67 : Miyahara Ophthalmology exterior view. (Source: photo taken by Lim Chen Hee)

Jioufen is a gold mining town founded during Qing Dynasty. The origin of the town name “ 九 份 ” stated the nine families lived at this town at the most primitive time. Many building in this town remain the original appearance to this day, reflecting the evidence of Japanese arrival to this land and the influence on both architecture and culture on the island during World War II. Nowadays this town serves as a remembering tourist destination which open to the public to celebrate Taiwanese culture and history. Tourist can walk throughout the old street to experience the lifestyle on that period of time. Due to typhoon reason, we do not went much venue in because of safety issue. Yilan, on Day 8 [30th September 2019] Lanyang Museum 兰阳博物馆

Figure 68 : Miyahara Ophthalmology exterior view. (Source: photo taken by Lau Chi Ying)

The Lanyang Museum is located in the Wushijiao Site Park in Wushigang, reflecting the local history, culture and landscape. The facade appearance is designed in a right-angled triangle shape, with main reef-like colors, lined up with a series of granite, artificial rocks, and aluminium panels. Something I like about this building is the unique appearance and the form is perfectly integrated with nature. It was inserted at an angle of 20 degrees to give a feeling of extension from the ground naturally without disturbing the environment. And also the planted boxes around the Lanyang Museum were specially designed with a tilt angle. Such a good example to show how actually a building merge to the environment.

Figure 69 : Planted box at the Lanyang Museum. (Source: photo taken by Lim Chen Hee)

Jiaoxi Household & Registration Office 礁溪户政事务所

Figure 70 : Outward appearance of Jiaoxi Household & Registration Office. (Source: https://iamjulia.pixnet.net/blog/post/26093657)

This building give a sense of unwelcoming and daunting. For me, I will not visit to this place if I was not been telling that it is a Household & Registration Office in advance. The irregular shape is like a collapse old house that has been abandoned and destructed after years. However, from another perspective from viewing this building, the building style and the appearance is actually bring out the identity of the building function. This building only serve the mankind whose really want to come for a reason and do any registrations and payments. It can avoid too much of clustering of people at this place. Taipei, Day 9 [1th October 2019] Luodong Cultural Working House 罗东文化工厂

Figure 71 : Luodong Cultural Working House. (Source: photo taken by Lau Chi Ying)

Luo Dong is a "emerging immigration city" , but in fact, cultural centers are often large black boxes that are far away from people's lives. . Through the use of new technologies, everyone can climb freely and enjoy the city's landscape. There are performance halls, libraries, and art galleries, and other spaces are combined into a new cultural and sports park with community atmosphere, history and emotion. Cultural factories are highly

flexible and can be adapted and adjusted to meet the needs of a rapidly changing modern society.

Figure 72 : Some of the spaces in Luodong Cultural Working House. (Source: https://wenku.baidu.com/view/e360546714791711cc7917e1.html)

The Luodong Cultural Working House is playing with the spaces organization. With the used of different levels to create many spaces which do not distract any of the human activity in this place. Make use of the building height to reduce noise distraction at the top level. Many spaces created at the ground floor level were separated into many parts. One of it can be seen at the left bottom in Figure 72 as above.

CONCLUSION In a nutshell, through this field trip, I realized that experiencing is much better than reading thousand of books. Architecture is not just a concept of aesthetics. The value of architectural beauty lies in whether the building can represent an important symbol and people's culture and history. There are many types of buildings. I was revised “Form follows Function” and “Function follows Form” throughout this study trip. The building may be built in the past just only for appreciation purpose without any functions. Its existence can be called a kind of “sculpture”. However, the building with functions are the house where we are now. I believe that a building is not just a shelter that just providing us safety and protection against the weather. Building can speak the story of a city and a nation. This trip indeed gave me an enlarge vision to this architecture course and I had gained a deeper understanding of the importance of architecture to the area, city, country as well as the whole global. For me, architecture is a matter of lifestyle. It may change and affect by the culture, religion, as well as the historical incident happened. Nowadays, we can see a lot of architecture style at any historical heritage site or we can even learn from the architecture history about the story of newborn of architectural style periodically. Years can change architecture, while architecture can change the world.
