A Message from the Superintendent Welcome back to the start of a new school year! On behalf of the Lamphere Schools, I hope you had an excellent summer and are ready for an outstanding year. The beginning of a new year is always a great time to embrace the opportunity to help make this an outstanding school year for your child. Take time to enjoy the excitement that surrounds the start of a new year and a fresh start toward success. Helping to ensure your child’s regular attendance and taking just a few minutes to ask about his/her day at school is important. We also invite and encourage you to become involved in the education of your child throughout the school year through school activities, events and organizations. Lamphere is committed to providing students with the finest comprehensive educational program possible, and it is this focus that helps drive our decisions. As we look forward to the 2012-2013 school year, we are pleased to be able to continue offering a wellrounded academic and extracurricular program for our students. Lamphere’s academic programs focus on high expectations with support built in to help our students succeed. I am proud to report that the full day kindergarten program has been a tremendous success for our students. This opportunity has helped our youngest students get off to a great start as they begin their school career. Our major focus at the elementary level will continue to be in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics, ensuring that all 2

our students have a solid foundation upon which to build. At the middle school level, we have adopted a new math series that aligns with the common core curriculum. This, along with the opportunity for students to enroll in a math lab, will assist students in fully understanding important and challenging math concepts required by the curriculum. Developing expert reading and writing skills will also be a priority in all content areas, since we know that it will help improve all-around academic success for our students. At Lamphere High School, we are proud of the wide selection of Advanced Placement course opportunities, as well as new science electives, now being offered to challenge Lamphere students to be the best they can be. Additional teachers have also been trained in specialized techniques to help improve students’ reading comprehension, a skill that is absolutely necessary to be successful in school. Parents are encouraged to speak to your child’s school counselor if you feel he/she would benefit from one of these additional reading courses. We recognize that the core academics are most critical for students, but it is also important that students receive a well-rounded education and that they have opportunities to explore elective courses of study. Lamphere offers a wide spectrum of electives and opportunities. For example, Lamphere’s band program has received recognition for being outstanding. It is also important that

today’s children, who are growing up in a global society, become fluent in a foreign language. Therefore, all students in Lamphere begin learning a foreign language as early as preschool and continuing through high school, thus giving them an important edge over other students upon graduation. Each of our schools offers students a friendly, safe atmosphere where academics, fine arts, foreign language, athletics and extra-curricular activities are emphasized. Our dedicated board of education, staff and administrators strive to maintain reasonable class sizes and outstanding programs and support services for our students. Lamphere also has its own scholarship program that has provided thousands of dollars each year to Lamphere grads as they pursue college or a vocational school. Since its inception in June 2007, the fund has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to Lamphere students! The Scholarship Fund has been made possible because of the generosity of local businesses, community groups, staff and community members. The successes of our students are many and we have highlighted some of those accomplishments in this issue of Dateline. Many of the district’s programs and services are also featured. I hope you enjoy reading our welcome back edition and learning about all that Lamphere has to offer our students and this fine community! Please accept my sincere wishes for an excellent school year! Sincerely, Marsha Pando, Ed. D. Superintendent

“Our first year, in May 2007, we were able to award four scholarships,” said Marsha Pando, Lamphere’s Superintendent of Schools. “This year we’ve presented another 30 scholarships, to Lamphere High School students to help make their dreams of a college education come true.” Money for the scholarship fund comes from many sources; donations from individuals, staff members, community groups and businesses. The annual Trivia Night fundraiser and other events throughout the school year benefit the scholarship fund as does our new brick paver project. “With the support of so many our scholarship fund continues to grow and we look forward to helping even more students continue their education in the years to come,” said Pando.

Math program proves successful at Page Page Middle School - Looking for new ways to help students struggling with math skills and problem solving, Page teachers and administration developed a plan for intervention and began using a digital tool called SuccessMaker from Pearson Digital Learning. “We identified students who needed math intervention and created new math lab classes,” said Katie Monhaut, Page Math Teacher. With only 15 students in each class, we were able to provide individualized learning sessions with the SuccessMaker program.” Students come to class and are divided into two groups, one group worked on computers using SuccessMaker, the other group worked with the math lab teacher to pre teach or review material that was being taught in their general math class. Each week, students would set goals and document their progress. Fridays they received a performance report and calculated gains and completed graphs of their progress.

“SuccessMaker helped me understand how math problems work. It also has given me confidence in my math class,” said Amber Brown, 8th grade student. “We’ve used the program for an entire school Page students enrolled in the SuccessMaker Math lab are gaining math skills and confidence. Summer Math Blast District Wide - Building on strategies learned throughout the school year our elementary students had the opportunity to continue becoming “mathematically powerful” this summer. “All of our elementary students were given calendars with math tasks sprinkled throughout the summer days at the Summer Math kickoff,” said Sharon Stephens, Edmonson Elementary Principal. “Through these math tasks, students and parents had the opportunity to see how math is everywhere around us and to strengthen math skills learned during the school year.” The Summer Math Blast Kickoff featured a video starring math coaches Sarah Campbell and Elizabeth Simpson. “We wanted to catch the attention of students and get them excited about summer math,” said Campbell. “The video was a fun idea and helped show students math is around us everywhere and you can have fun with it.” The video is posted on our website. If you’d like to view it, visit: www.lamphere.k12.mi.us/summermathfun Math journals were also given to every student. As students solved math tasks, they were asked to show their proof and write about their mathematical experiences in the journal. “Writing in mathematics helps develop student understanding and reasoning, making sense of problems, as well as constructing arguments based on their understanding,” said Stephens. “All of our summer participants will be invited to a special math celebration when we return to school in the fall,” said Simpson. “Everyone will take part in the same mathematical activities at the same time district wide. We are looking forward to a great turnout and creating more excitement about mathematics.”

Superintendent’s Art Collection District Wide - Each year Elementary Art Specialist, Craig Hinshaw, showcases student art work through the Superintendent’s Art Collection. Students are invited to attend a meeting of the Lamphere Board of Education and they are presented with a certificate and art supplies. Their artwork is framed by Hinshaw and displayed at the Administration Center and throughout the district. “We have an amazingly talented group of students in this district,” said Hinshaw. “It is wonderful to have so much art to share with our community.”

Beautiful Music

Learning Ladder

Learning Ladder - Visitors to Jan Figurski’s preschool classroom quickly find themselves tapping their toes and dancing in their seats as students play a variety of instruments and dance in the Preschool Band. “Our students love band time and playing instruments,” said Figurski. “As much fun as it is, the music helps us teach important skills like listening, taking turns, vocabulary and more which are so important in early childhood development.” Students choose the instrument they want to play and sit patiently in a circle until the music begins. Listening carefully for the song to indicate it’s their turn, soon the students begin to play their triangles, sticks, blocks, bells and tambourines and dance along as the song calls for their instrument. Preschool students listen for the song to call out their insturments indicating it’s their turn to shake, rattle and roll.

“Studies show that music and movement stimulate the brain and is helpful in both language and motor development,” said Anita Burkle, Learning Ladder Director. “Our staff is constantly looking for new ways to incorporate music and movement into our preschool curriculum.”

After learning shapes, counting strings and naming colors students play thier homemade guitars and dance to Elvis Pressley’s “Hound Dog”.

Figurski also plays guitar and each of her students has made their own guitar out of paper and string. Eyes light up when Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” comes across the speakers, out come the student guitars and the dancing begins. “I love when we do band,” said one student. “It’s fun to play songs and my teacher tells us we are exercising our bodies and our brains. I like to practice at home too.”

Kindergarten Enrollment Age Change Effective for the 2013-14 School Year Legislators have changed the law relating to the age that children may enroll in Kindergarten, ultimately resulting in children being five when they begin school. This law will be phased in as follows: • The student must be 5 years old by November 1, 2013 for the school year beginning September 2013. • The student must be 5 years old by October 1, 2014 for the school year beginning September 2014. • The student must be 5 years old by September 1, 2015 for the school year beginning September 2015.

Nominated in 2011 as a Daily Tribune “Best of the Best Preschool”, Lamphere’s Learning Ladder Program offers an early childhood program, half day and full day preschool programs an infant/toddler program and before/after school childcare programs. “Our program is designed to meet the developmental needs of each child,” said Anita Burkle, Learning Ladder Director. “We follow the educational benchmarks as set by the State of Michigan and goes handin-hand with the district’s kindergarten curriculum.” A staff of caring employees and preschool teachers with degrees in Early Childhood Development make Learning Ladder an important first step in children’s education. To learn more about the Learning Ladder programs, visit:

www.lamphere.k12.mi.us/LL

Parents should be aware that even though the law has changed, parents have the right to decide to enroll their child in Kindergarten as long as they will be 5 years old by December 1st if they notify the district by June 1st that they intend to enroll their child in Kindergarten. (The June 1st notification date is a new State requirement.) Kindergarten Round-Up for the 2013-2014 school year will take place on March 20, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. for all our elementary schools. Please plan to attend if you have a child who will be 5 years old by December 1, 2013. 5

Lamphere Center Hockeytown at Lamphere Center Lamphere Center - Students at Lamphere Center were visited by the Michigan Sled Dog team, a local hockey team that plays at the Great Lakes ice arena in Fraser. When we watch most hockey games, we witness athletes skate around the ice on skates worn on their feet.

The Michigan Sled Dogs are a team made up of fifteen athletes, both male and female, with a variety of disabilities including: amputees, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, and spinal cord injuries. The teammates range in age from sixteen to their mid-forties. All of the athletes are wheelchair bound so skating in the traditional way is not an option. Each athlete sits in a custom sled that rides the ice on two blades. Each player carries a short hockey stick in each hand that has a spike on one end and the blade on the other. They use the sticks to push their sled forward and to stick handle the puck. Each player discussed their disability, their jobs, and other hobbies they have including biking (hand bike), and wheel

chair basketball. In addition to the athletes discussing their hockey team, they also shared opportunities with the Lamphere Center students on activities the students could do in the community. Kevin Keegan said, “It’s cool that hockey can be played in a different way than the Detroit Red Wings play it”. Yuri Keem plays hockey for the MORC team. Yuri told his teacher, “I learned from the Sled Dogs that there are floor hockey leagues that I could play with.”

After the presentation, The Sled dogs were treated to a Lamphere Center Chili Cook off. Lamphere Center students had a great time and learned a lot about the game of sled hockey and other activities they can do in the community. If you are interested in learning more about the Michigan Sled Dogs, please visit their website http://www.misleddogs.com/ Home_Page.html.

Special Olympics Competition Lamphere Center - “This year seven of our Lamphere Center athletes competed in the state Special Olympics competition held at Central Michigan University, said Maureen Carty, Lamphere’s Director of Special Education. “Our athletes all competed in the Track and Field events. These included the 50 meter dash, the standing long jump, and the softball throw.” Several medals were won by the Lamphere Center participants, and these were proudly shown off when the students returned to school the following Monday. Megan Custer told her classmates, “That was really fun. I’m glad I won a medal.” Shane Graves said, “I want to do this again next year.”

Lamphere Center students competed in the State Special Olympics Competition and look forward to competing again in 2013.

Along with the competitions, there were many activities for the athletes to participate in, including a big dance one evening. As an added benefit, free medical screenings and vision testing were available. All the students received a pair of free sunglasses, and a student who needs to wear glasses got a new pair of prescription glasses at no cost. All in all, it was a great experience for the students and we look forward to having even more athletes participate next year.

Hiller students adopt a cow Hiller Elementary - During 2012, people around the world celebrated the year of the Dragon for the Chinese New Year. At Hiller Elementary, however, students have been celebrating the year of the cow! Hiller students learned about Heifer International, an organization that matches milk-giving animals (cows and goats) with families who live in hunger around the world. The idea that they could do something to help a needy family by buying an animal really captured their imaginations. Hiller Student Council decided to sponsor a coin drive to try to raise the $500 necessary to buy a Heifer Cow. Although it seemed like a challenging amount to raise in the two weeks they had to conduct the coin drive, Hiller students and families gave generously. When asked about donating a big chunk of his savings to help raise the money, fifth grade

student Justivon Dado said “I just thought it was for a great cause!” Second grader Katie Bilicki brought in a large donation from her savings and inspired her classmates to match it. As the two weeks came to a close, Hiller students had exceeded their goal, and raised more than the $500 needed. So if you come for a visit to Hiller and notice a few large pictures of Heifer Cows here and there, don’t be surprised. Students would tell you it’s their new “favorite” animal.

Hiller Student Council members pose with a photo of a cow from Heifer International. Hiller students and staff donated over $500 to help families wo live in hunger around the world.

Page student Erin Burcham and Darla Gower, Page Art teacher, learned about 3 Dimensional Speed Shapes, Computer Generated Imagery, Color and Trim Design and toured the Design Center. “Going to GM was a great opportunity for me to see different careers in the auto design industry. It really opened my eyes to how much GM has to offer modern art students. The program was hands-on, allowing me to really understand how my talents will work with possible career choices. Given the chance, I would definitely do it again.” Erin was able to sculpt a car out of clay, create a car on the computer and learn about job opportunities for students interested in pursuing a career in the creative arts. “I am very grateful that GM provided this opportunity to us. It was an amazing day,” said Gower.

Link Crew Leaders Get Ready for Freshmen Orientation Lamphere High School - Haven’t heard of Link Crew yet? Link Crew is a high school transition program that welcomes freshmen and makes them feel comfortable throughout the entire first year of their high school experience. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, the Link Crew trains mentors from upcoming junior and senior classes to be Link Leaders. As positive role models, Link Leaders guide the freshmen to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to high school and help facilitate freshman success. More and more studies show that if students have a positive experience their first year in high school, their chance for success increases dramatically. Link Crew provides the structure for freshmen to receive support and guidance from juniors and seniors who have been through the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the transition to a different school can sometimes be overwhelming.

George Sicken, who also helped with the training, stated “During May Development Day Link Leaders come to find that it doesn’t matter where they came from, what they’ve done in the past, or what group they belong to. This is their time to learn from one another, make new connections, and learn from past mistakes. And it’s fun too!”

In August Link Leaders came together again for workshops with Wainz and Sicken learning Lamphere High School students spent several days in training to become Link Crew Leaders Zoe` Wainz and George Sicken, both teachers for the 2012/13 school year. LHS students successful on world-wide exams Lamphere High School - A total of 32 Lamphere High School students earned college credit by enrolling in challenging Advanced Placement classes. Advanced Placement courses help students acquire skills and habits needed to be successful in college, as well as earn college credit while still in high school. Lamphere students compete with students from all over the world for college credit on the Advance Placement (AP) exams. The following Advanced Placement courses are offered at Lamphere High School (LHS): • • • •

AP Calculus AP English Literature AP English Composition AP Psychology

Twenty-six LHS students have received college English credit by passing an AP exam. Sixteen students passed the AP Literature and Composition exam (12th grade) and ten passed the AP Language and Composition exam (11th grade). “The results are outstanding,” said English Department Chair, Amy Guzynski. “The AP exams are global, so our students compete with the best and the brightest from all over the world. We continue to outscore the global average in the writing portion of the exam, which is the most difficult. We had seven students earn a 4 or higher, a new record for Lamphere (on a 5 point scale, 3 or higher is considered passing).” Guzynski also gives credit to Jim Toma, AP Language teacher who had ten students pass the exam the first year he taught the class. Toma said of his students’ success, “I’m thrilled that so many students have earned college credit as a junior and have yet another opportunity to earn more next year. I’m encouraged by their success and can’t wait to get started on next years’ students.” In AP Psychology, seven LHS students passed the exam. “After our inaugural year for AP Psychology, the results are pretty impressive,” said teacher Jamie Uhlmann. “I am proud of our students’ perseverance on such an extremely tough and rigorous course.” “This year we are proud to announce that six of our students received a passing score on the AP Calculus exam and have qualified for college credit,” said John Ceo, LHS AP Calculus teacher. “Success in AP classes typically leads to greater academic success in college. These students are committed to their education and we’re looking forward to hearing great things about their futures.”

Lamphere Drama Club gets everyone involved Lamphere High School - The 2011/2012 Theatre Season at Lamphere High School was packed, there was something for everyone. “It takes a lot of people to make the magic happen,” said Judy Lewis, Director. “I’d like to take a moment to put a spot light on the number of people it takes to “put up a show”. Every show here at Lamphere has the support of the Lamphere School Board and Administrative Staff; we are so fortunate to live in a community where the leadership cares deeply and is so involved. Also, we have a parent group who are tireless workers, show after show. Last fall we tackled the tragic tale of Frankenstein. It is difficult to find a play with substance and a large cast. This show had a cast of 17 and an additional 22 students had their hands back stage making theatre magic. Because 80 students auditioned for the fall show we added 2 one act plays, so that an additional 35 students could have acting roles.

Miss Polly’s Institute for Criminally Damaged Young Ladies Puts on a Show had a side splitting cast of 28 and a crew of 22. Early Frost cast an additional 5 students and utilized the same 22 technicians.” This “Evening of One Acts” was such a huge success we decided to make it a Lamphere tradition. Each fall we plan to add 2 one act plays to the season of opportunities. With the proceeds of this event we took 33 students to Western Michigan University for a backstage tour, chat with the actors/ techies, and excellent performance of Hairspray the Muscial. The spring musical, Sondheim’s Into the Woods was a beautiful

display of sight and sound bringing over 100 students to the auditorium every day to work. Working with Lamphere Band Directors Michael and Erin Garvey and the LHS Orchestra was one of the highlights of this production. We still had about 60 students who wanted to do another Musical, so we did. Chicago was the final LHS production of the 2011/2012 school year. High School Theatre is about education and collaboration. “I feel strongly that the outcome needs to feel like it belongs to the students, so we asked 2011 graduate Jared Seymoure to conduct the jazz band for Chicago,” said Lewis. “We gathered together 17 Lamphere High School musicians and he set to work.” One day he will realize the amazing feat he accomplished as a college Freshman. That’s what we’re about here at Lamphere, giving students opportunities and supporting them in their pursuit of greatness.

Instrumental Music Programs Excel Lamphere High School - The bands at Lamphere High School continued in their strong tradition of success in musical achievement throughout the 2011-2012 school year. Among the band’s many accomplishments are: The Lamphere Marching Band earned a score of 73.53 at state finals – the highest score in the recorded history of the band. Lamphere sent 25 students to participate in MSBOA Solo & Ensemble, 15 of whom earned First Division ratings and qualified to perform at the state level. concert bands that will run year-round. These ensembles will be known as Concert Band and Symphonic Band. Concert Band will be made up of 9th and 10th grade musicians, while 11th and 12th grade students will form the Symphonic Band. In this program, the music curriculum can be tailored to fit the needs of students at these two distinct levels in their musical development. Musicians from both of these bands will combine to form the Lamphere Marching Band, which you’ll be able to hear throughout the

summer and fall at Lamphere football games and MCBA competitions. The entire band program will be featured in the inaugural “Band-O-Rama” concert, held in the Lamphere Auditorium in early November. This exciting evening will see performances by the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and a special indoor presentation of the Lamphere Marching Band’s competition show. All are welcome, admission is free of charge. The Lamphere Bands would like to thank the Madison Heights community for their tremendous support of musical activities in our district.

Busy spring for Page Bands It was a busy spring for the Page Middle School Bands. Performances at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Assocaion (MSBOA) Festival earned the bands superior ratings, the spring concert was played to a full house, new Percussion Ensembles were formed and an end of the year celebration topped off a great school year.

MSBOA Band Festival Recap In March the 7th Grade Band and 8th Grade Band performed at the MSBOA District Band and Orchestra Festival. Both bands earned Division II “Superior” ratings, receiving all A’s and B’s on their rating sheets from all four judges; the 7th Grade Band performed in “Class D” and the 8th Grade Band performed in “Class B”. Each band played a concert performance consisting of a traditional march, a piece from MSBOA’s required list, and a chosen piece. Following the concert performance, the bands moved to the sight reading room where they were given five minutes to prepare a piece they had never seen before. Due to the growing population of Page Middle School, the 8th Grade Band was required to compete in a higher classification than they ever have before. Once a school reaches an

Spring Concert and Awards In May the Page Concert Bands and Jazz Band performed in the Spring Concert and Awards Night. The Jazz Band opened the concert with Basin Street Blues, playing for an enthusiastic audience. The Sixth Grade Band performed three pieces, the most complex being a rendition of Be Still My Soul. Soul Sister was the favorite tune of the Seventh Grade Band, and the Eighth Grade Band impressed the audience with an arrangement of the popular song, Fireflies. Both the Seventh and Eighth Grade Bands’ Percussion Ensembles performed as well. All band students earned awards for their commitment to music. The Jazz Band students receive a medal on a black and yellow ribbon to wear on their band uniform for their participation in this yearlong club. The Sixth Grade Band members received a parchment certificate. The Seventh Grade Band members

average of 200 students per grade, MSBOA requires the top ensemble to perform harder music regardless of the size of the band program. The 8th Grade Band students stepped up to the challenge, working with great focus in class to meet the new requirement. Both The 2011-2012 Page Middle School Jazz Band bands performed exceedingly well, impressing judges with not only their musicianship, but also their stage deportment, appearance, and general behavior.

received their medals from band festival and a Page Band medal to wear on their band uniform. The Eighth Grade Band members also received their medals from the band festival as well as a medal on a neck ribbon in recognition of playing in band for four years. In addition, several eighth grade band students received special recognition for their outstanding work. • Alison Shapic and Layal Harfouch received the Lowell Mason Award for service and enthusiasm for music and music education. • Joselyn Ralph and Conor McKinney received the Dave Brubeck Award for outstanding performance and commitment to jazz. • Jessica Kosticak and Colin Holstein received the highest middle school band honor, the Director’s Award for musicianship.

Page Band Year End Celebration Middle school band students celebrated the end of the year with a bowling party at Universal Lanes in Warren. Students in grades six, seven, and eight formed teams and bowled the evening away while enjoying pizza, snacks, and cake. It was an unexpected treat when the owner turned the Band Party into a “glow bowling” experience, complete with fluorescent bowling balls, black lights, great music, and a disco ball. Students, parents, and directors had a fun time!

New Percussion Ensembles at Page

The Page Bands are proud to announce the formation of two new percussion ensembles in the 2011-2012 school year. Both the Seventh Grade Band and Eighth Grade Band fielded percussion ensembles that performed at the Spring Concert. The ensemble members met with their instructor, Drew Parent, twice a week during class time for several weeks leading up to the concert. In these ensembles, students learned many percussion-specific skills on a varied set of instruments. One of the most exciting techniques for the students was the volume range they could explore (particularly the loud dynamic) when they were on their own away from the brass and woodwinds. The Lamphere Band Boosters proudly sponsored these ensembles in full, primarily through the new corporate ad campaign that now appears in our band programs. Plans are in the works for even more percussion instruction for the 2012-2013 school year. The Band Boosters are planning to support year round instruction on a weekly basis. The percussion instructor will not only coach percussion ensembles in Sixth Grade Band, Seventh Grade Band, and Eighth Grade Band, but will also serve as a sectional teacher to help with basic percussion techniques and classroom music.
