Help Your Child Succeed in School Every parent wants the best for their children, and every child can succeed. So, how is it that you can best support your child to help ensure that they achieve at the very highest levels? Research demonstrates that children (even at an early age) perform better in school when they understand clearly that their parents value and place a high level of importance on education. You can do this by: • letting children know you believe that their success is directly related to the amount of effort they put forth in school, including completing homework; • fully expecting them to succeed and to attend college or a trade school; • ensuring that they are on time, and prepared for school every day; • demonstrating that you value reading, and by having reading material available for them; • taking time to be involved with them, and • believing in them and loving them. Everyone in the Lamphere Schools is here is help your children succeed in school and in life. By working together we will be able to create a bright future for your children and the entire Lamphere Community.

Hiller Elementary National Award Winner Hiller Elementary has been named a Silver Award winner by the Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC). Congratulations to Katie McConkie, Lamphere’s Director of Food Service and the staff and students of Hiller on this accomplishment of being recognized as a healthy school by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Hiller Elementary School is making national news by working to support and improve the health of our children and our community. As part of their effort, healthy items are featured on their menus and physical education and activity emphasized. Their efforts are part of the Healthier US School Challenge. “Working with students and teaching them about making healthy choices at Cooking Club is one example of activities we encourage students to participate in,” said McConkie. “Providing opportunities to prepare and taste different foods opens up a whole new world for our students and their families.” The Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary national certification initiative for schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. It supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign by recognizing schools that are creating healthier school environments through their promotion of good nutrition and physical activity. “Sweet” Success at Edmonson Edmonson Elementary - “Twenty-five cents, please!” was the phrase heard over and over again in Maggie Blachford’s Kindergarten classroom at Edmonson Elementary in June. Families of the Kindergartners generously donated baked goods for the bake sale that was set up for some “sweet” fundraising to aid victims of the devastating EF5 tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma on the afternoon of May 20th. Edmonson Kindergarten through fifth grade students were invited to the bake sale to purchase deliciously baked goodies while knowing their funds would be sent to the Red Cross Disaster Relief, a non-profit organization that focuses on meeting people’s immediate emergency needs caused by disaster. Bake sales have long been one of the most popular ways of raising funds for various activities, events, charities, and organizations. “Part of our Social Studies curriculum is to be involved in a community service project,” shared Edmonson Kindergarten teacher, Maggie Blachford. “The class and I brainstormed ways to help our community. Right around the same time, most of the students had heard about the devastation from the Oklahoma tornado and wanted to lend a hand to those in need. Our class decided to reach out beyond our own community and help out victims of the

tornado.” Mrs. Blachford knew her young students would not only benefit from applying their mathematical skills of determining total purchase amounts and giving change, but also the lessons of compassion, empathy, and the importance of volunteerism. This caring group with smiles on their faces sold their “goodies” for twenty-five cents each. “Try one of the treats my Mommy made,” invited Kindergarten student, Haidyn Kline, who proudly let her student customers pick from the delicious looking treats. Fourth grader, Ava Wark, shared her excitement about giving. “It made me feel good to help other people.” The bake sale was a “sweet success” and raised over $150.00, which was sent to the Red Cross Disaster Relief organization.

Edmonson first grade students held a bake sale to benefit the vicitims of the Oklahoma tornado in May 2013.

It’s a Zoo at Edmonson! Edmonson Elementary - Every student loves a trip to the zoo. But . . . how about a zoo taking a trip to the students? That is what took place at Edmonson Elementary in June. Fourth grade teachers, Carrie Kluczyk and Bozenna Johnson, arranged for their students to receive a valuable lesson in Science through Lou’s Pet Shop. The students had been studying animal adaptations as a part of their fourth grade Science curriculum. Animals are an endless source of fun facts, and this presenter kept the students engaged with interesting information about each animal that he shared during his presentation. Students learned many facts such as why chameleons really change colors, the difference between poisonous and venomous animals, and that wild rabbits use their ears for more than hearing.

Fourth grader, Joe McNab really enjoyed this presentation along with his classmates. “I liked how the presenter told a lot of jokes and shared interesting facts. One thing I remember is that there is a species of rabbit (Flemish Giant) that is as big as a dog. He also took out a boa constrictor, and my classmates gasped! We got to touch it, too!” “This visit was a fun and engaging way to end our Science unit on animal adaptations,” said Johnson. “Our students will remember the fun facts they learned today for a long time.”

Donnie, from Lou’s Pet Shop, and one of his birds visited Edmonson.

Edmonson fourth grade students got to “meet” a variety of animals from Lou’s Pet Shop during a recent assembly.

“It is always fun when the teachers can learn new facts right along with the students as we did with Donnie from Lou’s Pet Shop. I now know why chameleons really do change colors,” said Kluczyk. “Ask our fourth graders why. They will

be excited to share their learning!” To see more photos of this event, visit our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/thelamphereschools and look for the photo album named Science Comes to Life.

A Cat Named Hiller Hiller Elementary - Food, shelter, and a place to live peacefully…..it's a basic need for both humans and animals. In Madison Heights, as in all communities, there are many animals each year that, for various reasons, don't have these basic needs met. They are often left wandering in the streets, hungry and in unsafe conditions. Fortunately, Madison Heights runs a no-kill animal shelter, that takes in these animals, providing food, shelter, and any medical needs that the animals require. Four years ago members of the student council at nearby Hiller Elementary School, heard about the animal shelter, and decided they'd like to do something to help. Raising $600.00 that year, the students walked over to the animal shelter to present a check to

Officer Suzette Gysel, the director of the shelter, and to have a tour. The animals they saw, and the stories Officer Gysel told them about each one resonated, and the students have continued each year since to raise funds for the shelter, something they consider a very worthy cause.

your school and students." she said. "You are truly animal "Heroes"! It was a wonderful tribute, and as they walked home that day, the students glowed with the pride that comes with realizing in giving, you often gain far more than receiving!

Officer Gysel wrote, "The dedication and devotion that your students show towards our animal shelter is truly amazing. Because of your kindness and open hearts, we will be able to make improvements to the shelter that provide comfort for our animals while they are with us." This year she surprised the students with a special tribute for their efforts. At the end of the tour, she held one of the kittens that had been particularly curious about the many students passing by her cage. "I'd like to name this kitten "Hiller" in honor of

The 4th graders used Wordle in creating biographical word clouds and the timeline maker from readwritethink.org to note important events from the life of their American Heroes-all of these pieces were on display at the wax museum. Lamphere Center Special Olympics State Summer Games 2013 “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Lamphere Center - This is the oath taken by all athletes who participate in Special Olympics. This is especially true of the seven athletes representing Lamphere Center at the 2013 Michigan Special Olympics State Summer games. The first international Special Olympics Summer games was held in Chicago at Solider Field during the weekend of July 19 & 20, 1968. This year 6,000+ athletes from all across the great state of Michigan converged on the campus of Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. With the help of various fundraisers, athletes do not have to worry about paying a fee to participate in this great statewide event. The Lamphere Center athletes were driven to the event with the help of their coaches; John McAskin, Dave Ryder and Cindy Penn. Upon arrival the athletes found their rooms in the dorm, unpacked their belongings and got their first of many great CMU meals before it was time to head to the opening ceremonies. The opening ceremonies consisted of thanking many of the great donors that make summer games a possibility. A big part of the opening ceremonies revolves around the lighting of the Special Olympic torch. Every year the torch is lit from a flame that is run up to Mt. Pleasant from Lansing with the help of many great law enforcement men and women from all over the state. After all the opening ceremonies are completed it is time for a carnival with a plethora of games and prizes. The Summer Games have a wide range of events to compete in; the games range from but are not limited to track and field, bocce ball, weightlifting, swimming,

volleyball, basketball, and bowling. The Lamphere Center Ravens participated in track and field. The athletes competed in the 50-meter dash, standing long jump, and softball throw. The weather cooperated perfectly with warm temps and sunny skies. Each and every Lamphere Center Raven won plenty of medals and ribbons. As a majority of the events started to Lamphere Center Special Olympic Summer Game Athletes - 2013 wind down on Friday, anticipation built as the dance was quickly approaching (this is no ordinary dance with over 2,000 participants). Many a move was put on display on the dance floor with music and song filling the air. After the dance another tradition quickly began. This tradition brought together the Lamphere Center team with the Lamphere Jr’s (Coached by the Belmont’s, Deb and Kathy Jo) for some pizza in the dorm hallway. Saturday brought some more closing events and the chance to participate in some other great offerings from Special Olympics (free eye screening and glasses, free hearing screens, and free dental exams). The Lamphere Center Ravens would like to thank all of their donors who have helped throughout the year. We greatly look forward to next year and all the thrills and excitement it will bring. See you in the fall when we get our bowling shoes on and hit the lanes.

Page students think about college During the 2012-13 school year, Page Middle School continued their focus on preparing all students for a post-secondary education. As part of this focus, seventh grade students were able to spend the day at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor learning about what life is like as an incoming Freshman. Earlier in the year, eighth grade students spent the day at Eastern Michigan University hearing about their academic programs. As the year drew to a close, we had the privilege of hosting former Page student Eric Chung for the afternoon as he shared with our eighth graders about his experiences as a student at Harvard University. Eric’s presentation allowed students to see the process he went through as he went from Page to Lamphere High School and then onto Harvard. Many students took the opportunity to ask Eric questions during the very informative program. Hard work and academic success runs in Eric’s family, his older brother Alfred was also a Page student and is currently in Medical School at Northwestern University.

Former Page student Eric Chung, who is a 2010 graduate of Lamphere High school and currently a student at Harvard University shares his college experiences with eighth grade students at Page.

Lamphere High School Honors & Awards Link Crew… Welcoming our Freshmen & Developing Leaders The Lamphere High School Link Crew is a transition program where upperclassmen “link” with small groups of incoming ninth graders. Link Crew activities occur throughout the school year. The first of these activities happens even before the first day of school. The entire ninth grade class is invited in for a kick-off event in late August. During this time students go through many upbeat and positive activities that bond them socially and connect to the school. Students begin with an orientation to the building and on teamwork activities. Students are also given information early on how to be successful in high school. Link Crew is much more than an event at the beginning of the school year. Link Crew activities happen throughout the school year and focus on various topics. Academic and social follow up meetings take place on a regular basis throughout the school year. Freshmen are given information prior to events happening such as homecoming, final exams, dances, scheduling of classes, how to work through conflicts with friends are some of the topics discussed. Link Crew leaders host study sessions as semester exams take place in January and June. Many ninth graders feel a sense of relief knowing there is an older student that they can go to for information about school or to get advice on social issues. A benefit of Link Crew as valuable as what the ninth graders receive is the leadership abilities developed by the upperclassmen. Link Crew leaders have to apply for the position and write a paper explaining why they would be a successful leader and role model to incoming ninth graders. They then have to interview with the teachers that supervise the Link Crew program. Link Crew leaders facilitate many meetings throughout the year and participate in their own training in preparation for working with the ninth graders. Link Crew leaders serve as role models to the younger students and must maintain respectable grades and demonstrate good character throughout the school year. Link Crew leaders do not get paid and they do not earn a credit for their time and energy of serving as Link Crew leaders. Link Crew leaders want to see success in their fellow Lamphere students and devote much time to make that happen. It is wonderful that so many of our upperclassmen invest in their school through their involvement in Link Crew.

LHS students successful on world-wide exams Lamphere High School - Lamphere High School offers several Advanced Placement (AP) courses both in house and through CASA (Center for Advanced Studies and the Arts). The AP program is designed to offer challenging coursework to prepare students for the rigor of college learning and to prepare them to take the AP exam in May. These exams are scored on a 5 point scale; 3 and higher is considered a passing score. Most colleges offer college credit for a passing score on these exams, so a student taking an AP course can earn both high school and college credit. Lamphere students continue to achieve success on these highly competitive exams. The following students achieved a 3 or higher on an AP exam. Congratulations on your hard work and success!

Lamphere Music Students work with Detroit Symphony Orchestra Musicians Students at both Page Middle School and Lamphere High School had the opportunity to work alongside professional musicians as part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s youth programs. Lamphere High School students Amber Miller and Taylor Nowakowski participated in the Avanti Summer MusicFest, a week-long workshop coached by DSO musicians. This program, only in its second year of operation, was open to students from all around the Detroit area. Students spent their days in one of three large ensemble rehearsals conducted by outstanding local band and orchestra teachers, as well as in small section rehearsals led by DSO performers. In addition, participants spent an hour each day singing as part of a massed choir, made up of all 200 participants in the Avanti program. At the end of the week, students performed in a finale concert at the DSO’s historic Orchestra Hall in Detroit. The concert featured performances by Avanti’s string orchestra, concert band, symphony orchestra, and massed choir. Students also had the opportunity to attend two DSO summer series concerts as part of the program. “Avanti was an incredible and rare opportunity,” said Amber. “Being able to rehearse and perform side by side with DSO musicians was a once in a lifetime experience.” A veteran of the Avanti program, Taylor
