Dawn is the Director and Owner of Sew Confident Chorley, a wife and mum to two teenagers. From a young age she was always very creative, knitting, crafting and sewing. It wasn’t until her daughter started talking GCSE options and careers that she decided to leave a safe, secure job and take the plunge into self-employment and be her own boss! Dawn wanted to be happy, share her passion for creating and do a job she loved!

After hours of researching career ideas, she discovered Sew Confident. Started in Glasgow in 2012 by a talented young Scottish entrepreneur called Jenny McCreary, it is the only sewing tuition franchise in the UK with 2 in Scotland. Dawn opened the first Sew Confident studio in England in July 2019. It’s now been over 2 years and Dawn has no regrets and is a firm believer in doing what makes you happy “I love my job; it is hard work, but it is so much fun and so rewarding.” Says Dawn.

Classes range from beginners to advanced with a studio full of sewing machines and equipment. They have beginners sewing, dressmaking, overlocker, quilting, knitting, crochet, hand embroidery and soft furnishing classes. They also run seasonal classes which are very popular, so right now they are gearing up for Christmas with wreath making, Christmas quilted stockings and much more. During lockdown Dawn became the ‘arm knitting queen’ teaching people virtually via zoom how to arm knit super cosy chunky blankets in just 2 hours!

Sew Confident cater for everyone who wants to try their hand at a new hobby or improve their creative skills. You can also find a small haberdashery area in the studio selling fabric, patterns, threads etc. You can get advice and buy sewing machines and book in for a 1-2-1 lesson with Dawn or one of the other tutors if you want. The experience does not end after your class, Sew Confident has some great community ‘Sewcial’ groups on Facebook for support and chat before and after classes too.

Sewing and being creative is so therapeutic, anyone can learn to sew and should give it a try; sometimes you just need a little bit of confidence and some reassurance. Some people like yoga and meditation, but did you know sewing can put you in a meditative state? People lead such busy, stressful lives these days, you need to find something you enjoy and allow yourself ‘me time’ and ‘down time’ to improve your wellbeing.

Dawn shows you CAN turn a hobby into a business and make a living from it. The Covid-19 pandemic has given people time to reflect on life and we are more aware than ever of people’s struggles with mental health, so it is vital you have something to focus on to take you away from the stresses of everyday life.

If you want to give their classes a go then now is the time to get in touch! You really need to make time for You!
