isitors from all over the world have been flocking to Lancaster County for decades to taste that “foreign” delicacy known as Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. Today’s visitor, however, is being given the opportunity to taste the world as a result of the area becoming more diverse. With our ever-changing population comes a mix of different ethnicities, cultures and traditions. In addition, Lancaster’s focus on organically grown produce beautifully lends itself to the vegan/vegetarian movement. One tradition that runs deep, no matter where you’re from, is food. Food unites people and evokes a sense of community and togetherness. From a food perspective, Lancaster is becoming a “melting pot” that embraces different tastes and flavors from numerous regions and nations. The following features a variety of popular food destinations across Lancaster County, each one showcasing its own unique flavor.

efore hotels, outlet centers and tourist attractions popped up along the historic highway, it was once home to Enos Miller’s truck repair shop. As the story goes, Anna Miller, Enos’s wife, would serve homemade chicken and waffles to drivers while her husband fixed their trucks. Truth be told, the Millers found that they could make more money fixing food than repairing rigs. So, the couple opened a small diner in 1929 that has grown to become one of Lancaster’s most popular restaurants. Miller’s is widely known for its award-winning smorgasbord, covering everything from soups, salads and breads to meats, vegetables and desserts. But, to truly understand the restaurant’s traditional Pennsylvania-Dutch signature meals, you have to first look at the area’s roots. The term Pennsylvania Dutch is derived from the settlers who initially came from German-speaking areas of Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries and spoke a German dialect they referred to as “Deitsch” or “Deutsch”. Over the years, it became misinterpreted as Dutch. As in most regions of the country, families have passed down recipes from generation to generation, which is why Pennsylvania

“Homemade food from scratch with a beautiful view.” Dutch country has its traditional sayings, styles and, of course, cuisine. Ronks, where Miller’s and its associated stores – The Quilt Shop at Miller’s, Gift and Bake Shop, Mount Hope Estate Winery & Gift Shop, and more – are located, is a quaint farming community less than 10 miles from Lancaster City. Known for its Amish and Mennonite population, the area is a popular tourist destination. When customers arrive at Miller’s, they are greeted by a 1927 Graham Brothers Huckster, which has been transformed to a hostess podium. Old black and white mural-sized photos dating back to an era that saw Prohibition, the Great Depression and the beginnings of World War II, cover nearly every wall in the facility; most are local photographs that have been chosen and printed from either LancasterHistory.org or restaurant archives. One photo depicts the Thomas E. Strauss family, who took over ownership from the Millers in 1948. According to the company’s history, “Keeping the Miller’s name, the restaurant flourished and, in 1957, they officially changed the name to Miller’s Smorgasbord and began serving their famous ‘seven sweets and seven sours’. In 1975, Miller’s underwent a major expansion, which included upgrading the kitchen facilities and the addition of a second dining room. In 1983, another renovation changed the dining room layout to what you see today.”

he entire restaurant saw a complete overhaul in 2011, changing the décor to provide an environment of what life in Lancaster was like during the 1920s. “I was going for permanence. I was throwing back to what it was like in 1929,” says Bill Moshos, Miller’s director of marketing. In addition to the life-sized murals, Miller’s also added an exhibition island in the center of the dining area and enabled à la carte menu dining to be offered as well as the smorgasbord. “We went back to our roots,” says Miller’s Executive Chef and Bakery Manager Steve Gainer, who not only has spent the past 20 years working for the Thomas E. Strauss company, but he is also a native of Lancaster County, born and raised in Lititz. Steve, who with his wife, Sally, once operated his own restaurant, says he’s always had

Mural-sized photos dating back to an era that saw Prohibition ... cover nearly every wall ... an understanding of food and a desire to cook. Both of his parents were no strangers to the kitchen. “My mom is a fantastic culinary person, and my dad was really into cooking. It’s just something I’ve always been around,” he notes. And, speaking of food … There’s so much of it! “Ninety percent of the stuff that you’re going to see here is made from scratch. Seven days a week, we cook for the day, every day,” Steve explains. “Because of the volume and the popularity of Lancaster County, the only way we could really keep up with the demand was to go back to buffet-style dining – a smorgasbord,” Bill explains. “We added on, and it kept getting bigger and bigger. It started out as this tiny little truck stop building and turned into an almost 500-seat restaurant.”

Noticing that “atmosphere and customer comfort are important,” as well, Miller’s reduced the number of seats to the upper 300s to allow customers more space. “We went back to offering à la carte because we realized the whole marketplace doesn’t want buffet all the time,” Bill states. “We also added a soup and salad component, but it’s not just like two soups; it’s eight soups. Our soup, salad and bread buffet is fabulous.” It’s not just the amount of food that’s being offered, but the quality of the food being served at Miller’s sets them apart from most buffet-style eateries. Steve mentions two local farmers – Stephen Beiler and Elmer Fisher – who provide him with the freshest of produce, including corn, tomatoes, zucchini, cabbage, watermelon, cantaloupe and broccoli, just to name a few. “I try to source as much local stuff as I can, especially in season,” Steve says. “We are just really blessed with excellent soil and the know-how. As it comes in season, as much as I can get from these guys, I do. It’s truly local and farm-to-table foods.” The menu is part Pennsylvania Dutch and part American fare. Steve considers their signature items to be shoofly pie, seafood bisque, chocolate pecan pie, gourmet apple pie, chicken pot pie, hot bacon dressing, baked cabbage and, of course, chicken & waffles. “Did I say chicken & waffles? I’d probably be shot if I didn’t say

chicken & waffles,” Steve laughs. He adds that chicken pot pie – Lancaster-style – confuses visitors from other areas of the country. “They often ask, ‘Where’s the crust?’” he confirms. But, if you’re not in the mood for some Pennsylvania Dutch comfort food, Miller’s also offers other steaming hot alternatives, such as beef burgundy, vegetarian chili and steamed shrimp. Steve says at Miller’s you’ll find “homemade food from scratch with a beautiful view.” “My kind of saying is, ‘We have the fixin’s, you do the mixin,’ because there’s so many combinations of things that can happen.”

Located at Plain & Fancy Farm, which opened in 1959, the “low n’ slow” restaurant made its debut in April 2017. The family-style restaurant shifted gears for a chance at offering something different: barbecue in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Switching menu items from your basic meat and potatoes to smoked brisket and coleslaw, Smokehouse BBQ and Brews is a dining alternative for those wanting a taste inspired by the South. However, it seems that smoked meat does have a Lancaster connection; it’s a tradition in Plain communities, and nearby Smoketown was named for the smoked meat that it produced. (But, don’t worry because while one side of the menu features barbecue, the other still offers Lancaster County favorites.) Rubs and sauces are both in-house creations. One of the sauces, ABQ, contains a Lancaster County favorite, apple butter. Other sauces include White Horse, Memphis Heat, and The Smoke. Popular menu items include corn muffins, frickles, smokehouse chili, The Legend, and Mac & Cheese – made with four varieties of cheese. Don’t forget dessert: peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream, shoofly pie and more. And, beer is also a staple of Smokehouse’s menu. Beverages range from a root beer float to a beer float made with chocolate vanilla porter. There are also 12 craft beers on tap. Other notable destinations: JoBoy’s Brew Pub (Lititz); Harvey’s Main Street Bar-B-Q (Mount Joy); Divine Swine (Manheim); Hess’s Barbecue Catering (Willow Street)

Looking for authentic Latin American cuisine? You’ll find it at El Serrano, along with a Peruvian atmosphere that takes you on a journey to owner Manuel Torres’ boyhood home. The first El Serrano opened in West York in 1987. After relocating in 1989 to East York, the Torres family opened a second El Serrano in Lancaster in 1994. The restaurant houses three dining venues in one location: El Serrano, which specializes in Latin American cuisine; Clementinas, a private dining venue; and Culturas, a tapas restaurant. There’s also a courtyard for al fresco dining; a chef’s table located in a cozy nook off the second-floor kitchen (reservation only); a lower-level wine cellar for the restaurant’s wine classes; and a tapas bar adjacent to Culturas on the second level. The Latin American restaurant menu features appetizers such as Ceviche and Fish Tacos; an array of salads; favorites such as fajitas, chimichangas and enchiladas; Peruvian dishes like Arroz con Mariscos (scallops, shrimp and tilapia, sautéed with ranchero sauce and served with mixed vegetables); and vegetarian options, such as Crispy Yucca Fingers and Chiles Rellenos. Clementinas’ prix-fixe menu features five courses with a flight of Latin American wines. This venue is available for dining Friday and Saturday evenings (reservations required). The rooms are also available Sunday through Thursday for special events or private parties. And, Culturas’ menu features cold and hot tapas such as Ceviche, Gazpacho and Pincho, as well as a few “large plates,” including diver scallops and ratatouille-stuffed mushrooms. Other notable destinations: La Cocina Restaurant (Downtown Lancaster); Tres Hermanos (Mount Joy); La Borimex Restaurant (Ephrata); Flora’s (Downtown Lancaster)

Indian & Nepalese H I M A L AYA N C U R RY & GRILL 22 East Orange Street, Lancaster 717-393-2330 or Himalayanlancaster.com Hours of operation: (Lunch) Monday-Saturday, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. (Dinner) 5-9 p.m. Closed Sundays.

Try a taste of Nepal at Himalayan Curry & Grill. Opened in 2012 by owner Mohan Pradhan and family, the Nepalese and Indian cuisine has been voted the best in Lancaster County year after year. Right in the heart of downtown Lancaster, the restaurant features Indian food, including favorites such as Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo and Shrimp Coconut Curry. Basmati rice is served along with many of the entrées, and a small selection of naan (breads) is a great addition to any meal. Nepalese cuisine is very diverse and flavorful; it’s not as spicy as most Indian dishes. Some of Himalayan’s hit dishes include Choila, Kukhura ko masu, and Momo (in vegetable or chicken). Or, if you’re not quite sure what you’re in the mood for, you can check out their daily buffet, which features both Indian and Nepalese food. The “hidden treasure” is located in a small venue, so you may want to either make reservations for dinner – no reservations for lunch, first-come-firstserved basis – or arrive early. Dinner reservations are required on Fridays and Saturdays. Be prepared and come on an empty stomach because the large-portioned meals are enough for two to share. And, wash it all down with the restaurant’s well-known Mango Ice Tea. Other notable destinations: Taj Mahal (Lancaster); Namaste Restaurant (Lancaster)

Vietnamese RICE & NOODLES 1238 Lititz Pike, Lancaster 717-481-7461 or Riceandnoodlesrestaurant.com Hours of operation: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday & Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Closed Sundays. Children’s menu available.

Vegan & Vegetarian RO OT 223 West Walnut Street, Lancaster 717-826-9130 or Rootoflancaster.com Hours of operation: Monday-Friday, 4-11 p.m. Saturday & Sunday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.

There is something for everyone at Root, and, yes, even for the carnivore of the family. Everything is 100% vegan at this restaurant and bar. Vegan beer? That’s right. From pasta to cheesecake and everything in between, the entire menu focuses on making everyday meals healthier without the use of meat, poultry, seafood, eggs or dairy products. The restaurant opened in late December 2015 and offers seating for 84 guests – 54 in the bar/ dining area and 30 in the back dining area. The menu, which features appetizers such as Oyster Mushroom Tataki and Philly Portabella Spring Rolls, changes every six to eight weeks to take advantage of seasonal items that are available from Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-op. Some of the main dishes that were featured in late winter included Caribbean Tofu, Mushroom Taco with Kimchi, and Potato and Tofu Curry. Beer and wine selections are also veganfriendly, with various rotating beers on tap and several wines to choose from. Everything is made from scratch and prepared daily, so it is noted on the restaurant’s website to “please allow extra time for preparation.” In addition to dinner, the restaurant also offers brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Another notable destination: Upohar Vegetarian Restaurant (Lancaster)

This third-generation restaurant offers traditional Vietnamese cuisine that focuses on fresh and flavorful ingredients. And, if you’re exploring Vietnamese fare for the first time, no worries; they’ll help guide customers in selecting something they are sure to enjoy. The menu includes items from Vietnam’s three regions. Starters include noodle salads, such as vermicelli rice salads, which are served at room temperature and include shredded lettuce, cucumbers, bean sprouts and cilantro with a selection of protein. Or, a newcomer can sample the eatery’s soups; the Pho Bo soup (beef noodle) is made from a family recipe handed down from the owners’ grandfather. French-bread sandwiches include ingredients such as homemade rolled ham, house mayonnaise, onions, cucumbers, Chinese radish and julienne carrots. Other sandwich meats include chicken liver pâté, stir-fried shredded chicken, grilled seasoned pork, deep-fried tofu, shrimp and more. Additional entrées include family-style and stir-fried meals, rice platters and steamed noodles. The restaurant’s signature dish is pan-fried rice noodles served in house garlic sauce with a choice of protein. Also, the meats at Rice & Noodles are marinated in lemongrass, a staple in Vietnamese cuisine. Desserts consist of French macarons and ice cream in three flavors: coconut, Vietnamese coffee and pandan. Other notable destinations: Rice & Noodles sister eatery, Sprout (Downtown Lancaster); Pho Noodle House (Downtown Lancaster); Noodle King (Downtown Lancaster)

Italian LU C A 436 West James Street, #101, Lancaster 717-553-5770 or Lucalancaster.com Hours of operation: Tuesday-Thursday, 5-11 p.m. Friday & Saturday, 5 p.m.-12 a.m., Sunday, 4-9 p.m. Kitchen closes one hour prior to closing.

If you enjoy rustic “Old Country” Italian cuisine made from fresh, vibrant and locally sourced ingredients, then Luca is the place for you. The Food Network’s Alton Brown gives it rave reviews. Come in for a casual meal or a celebratory dinner at this neighborhood restaurant. Owners Taylor and Leeann Mason lived in St. Helena, California – the heart of Napa Valley – for a few years and brought a piece of what they experienced to Lancaster, such as impressive topnotch hospitality and a love of the land. Luca’s menu changes often. Simple dishes, which aren’t necessarily what you will find at other Italian restaurants, are created in the open kitchen. During the spring and summer, lighter dishes are offered; whereas, during the fall and winter, heartier meals are served. This past winter, guests dined on small plates such as handmade Burrata, Pear & Smoked Prosciutto, Chicken Liver Bruschetti, and WoodGrilled Beef Tongue. Family-owned and operated, Hong Kong Garden is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Lancaster County that has stayed at the same location, under the same business name and managed by the same family for nearly four decades. The restaurant’s success is attributed to its consistency and family involvement. The restaurant is found within the Wheatland Shopping Center and seats 120 customers. Owners Steve and Susan Quan, who were given the reins from Susan’s mother and father, who opened the eatery in 1980, say they serve the “basics” of Chinese food at Hong Kong Garden. Some of those basics include fried rice and chow mein. Top sellers include Hot and Sour soup, General Tso’s chicken, and egg rolls that are hand-rolled and filled with vegetables that are sliced on-site. Every meal is prepared fresh to order, which allows for custom requests to meet special dietary needs or to increase or decrease the spiciness of a dish. Vegetarian and vegan dishes may also be requested. However, some items on the menu don’t change, such as the restaurant’s hot sauce that’s made from a family recipe. The lunch menu offers more than 130 items; both the lunch and dinner menus include a variety of soups, appetizers, entrées, chef specialties and more. Other notable destinations: Tony Wang’s (Lancaster); Far East Café (Millersville); Jade Garden (Mount Joy); Wu’s Garden (Leola); Café East (Lancaster)

Dine in one of McCleary’s pub-style areas – featuring a copper-topped bar, hi-top tables, and traditional tables and chairs, complemented by Victorian-style lighting fixtures – or feast in the renovated 2,000-square-foot garden room, which went from being a three-season room to a glassenclosed four-season room (seats 100). From appetizers to the butcher block, McCleary’s has something for everyone, including beer, both on tap and bottled. Irish brews like Guinness, Smithwick’s and Boddingtons are always part of the beer variety. There’s also a nice selection of wines, martinis, cognacs and after-dinner drinks. The bistro and bakery opened in 2015 by awardwinning owner Chef Cedric Barberet and his wife, Estelle. Both from France, Cedric and Estelle grew up in the pastry business; both of their parents owned bakeries. The small restaurant serves a number of items, from appetizers such as Beef Tartare and Escargot to entrées that feature Grilled Lamb Merguez and Veal Schnitzel (lemon-caper-parsley beurre blanc, arugula salad and shaved parmesan). Bistro Barberet also serves burgers, sandwiches, quiche, soups and salads. Wanting something sweet? Check out the bakery’s expansive menu, serving beautiful handcrafted treats that look too good to eat. Puerto Rico is known for its lively entertainment, beautiful landscape and, of course, its delicious food. Formerly known as Catering by Christina, this Puerto Rican treasure – a branch of Upohar LLC – can be found at Lancaster Central Market every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. According to the market’s website, “’Comida Criolla’ is Puerto Rican food that combines Spanish cooking techniques and local ingredients. Our stand is called Christina’s Criollo, because here you can sample chef/owner Christina Maldonado’s family recipes from Puerto Rico, where we offer breakfast and lunch specials, soup, traditional Puerto Rican desserts as well as Latin-inspired side salads and her signature Sofrito!” What is sofrito? It’s a staple in Puerto Rican cooking, created by mixing tomatoes, onions, peppers, garlic and herbs into a sauce. Along with Christina’s signature sofrito, guests will also find traditional Puerto Rican dishes, such as a variety of Empanadas, Yellow Rice with Pigeon Peas, Yucca, a number of soups and salads, and desserts, like Flan. Plus, if you’re entertaining, Christina’s Criollo offers full-service catering for any event.
