About me After completing my National Diploma (N6) in Art & Design in 1993, I have spent more than 25 years in the print and publishing industry, focussing on magazine production, corporate design and other speciality publications. With this experience, I am able to offer a range of graphic design, layout and pre-press services – providing fast, professional and accurate design – from supply of raw text through to print-ready files. In those years, I was fortunate enough to have been involved in the design and production of some of South Africa’s iconic publications, among them Sawubona magazine for South African Airways, Your Wealth for Liberty, Business Day for BDFM, The New Age newspaper and ONE SUN magazine for Sun International. I have been running a successful freelance design business for 18 of those 25 years. Trading as Lance Gunn Design Co, the majority of my freelance work has been through relationships built with publication and communication consultants ie: Words’Worth, Bounce Communications, Swift Communications, Taurus Communications and the Lime Envelope. My services include: Magazine design, Annual Reports, Brochure design, Newsletters, Staff publications, Logo design, Annual Reports, Flyer design, Letterhead design, Poster design, Advert design, Web Banners, Business Cards, Company Folders, Email Signatures, Power Point design, Stationary design, Label design, Billboard design, Car Wrap design, T-shirt design, Packaging design, Calendar design, Catalogue design, CD Cover design, Company Profiles, Sticker design, Menu design, Book Cover design, Invitation design, Technical Illustration The client list includes: Abraham Kriel Childcare, Sun International, De Beers Group, Nedcor, Liberty, South African Airways, STANLIB, Anglo American Corporation Medical Scheme, Harmony Gold Mines, Permanent Bank, Conservation Corporation Africa, Sasol, Iscor, Eskom, University of Pretoria, Rhodes University, University of Johannesburg, Metropolitan Life Limited, Siemens, TOTAL, Medscheme, TELG Africa, Saint-Gobain Construction, THRIP, SAMRA and The Innovation Fund. What I do Graphic Design: Visual storytelling From branding, packaging, marketing and communicating, graphics are everywhere. Brands big and small use both printed and digital designs – like logos, websites, marketing material or advertisements – in an effort to attract the eye of their audience and promote their product or service. And no matter what they’re selling, behind every brand’s visual campaign is a graphic designer. Simply put, creating visual concepts, physically or digitally, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform and captivate consumers. Staff and customer publications: Communication is key Companies need to communicate with their primary audiences: their employees, customers and suppliers. I produce a range of publications working with companies to ensure their staff, customers and suppliers are always in the know. Brochures and flyers: Keeping the market informed Every company needs to keep the market informed on its products and services. Brochures and advertising flyers are still good ways to reach your existing and target markets. I design and produce a range of brochures and flyers that will keep your existing and potential customers informed. If need be, I can have copy written for your brochures and flyers from a brief and deliver the finished product to your door. Annual Reports: Customers and suppliers want to know Some companies spend vast fortunes on annual reports. I specialise in cost-effective stakeholder reports that deliver the essential information without breaking the bank. Talk to me about producing your annual report in a cost-effective way that will still put gloss on your performance. Corporate Identities: Visual consistency is vital If you need a coherent Corporate Identity (CI), a ‘look-and-feel’ for your company that is modern, stylised and consistent across all applications, from business cards and letterheads to your online offerings, I will produce a CI for you that will do the job, simply and without fuss. Advertising: Agencies are not every company’s first choice Many companies do not have the luxury of an advertising agency or don’t feel inclined to pay agency rates, particularly for one-off product ads. I am able to produce a range of advertising materials for various companies on an ad hoc basis that will put a professional gloss on your advertising offerings at extremely reasonable rates. Redesign of existing publications: Time for a make-over Every product needs a make-over from time to time. Publications, regardless of how successful they are, also need the occasional face-lift to modernise and freshen them up. I have done numerous redesigns and will give your publication a whole new visual life with a bit of design magic.

ark* wakes up from the warmth of the sun outside and rubs the sleep out of his eyes. He is excited about the day. It feels like an unopened gift awaiting him. It is school holidays and he can stay in bed as long as he likes. But the smell of freshly made pap and the anticipation of the visitors that will be coming to play games and make lunch for the whole house later is too much and soon he is up and running to the kitchen to see what is cooking. He knows that whatever the day will bring, it will be good! Mark is happy! He does not realise it consciously, but part of his happiness is the absence of the scary dreams that he used to have each night. He has not had one for the past ten nights or more. And even before that they were becoming more infrequent. Last night was very special. He got to sit next to Aunty Elise as they watched TV. He was a bit sleepy and not really watching too much. At one point he was looking at Aunty Elise’s soft cheek and the very fine little hairs that grew there. He was that close. Without thinking

he stroked the back of his hand against her cheek to see if he could feel the fine hairs. She took his hand and kissed the back of it and then looked down at him and smiled. He gets the same warm and happy feeling as he remembers this. Again he reminds himself to keep this memory forever. ◗

THE HERO IN HIS LIFE – A GIFT OF FATHERHOOD The popular saying, “A dad is his son’s first hero and his daughter’s first love,” played a big part in Timothy* finding his identity and purpose in life. His house father of many years, Victor, has had to step in as his hero as he had never met his real dad. High school, especially matric (2017), was no walk in the park for Timothy (21 years). The realisation of the challenges matric brought and finding himself was something he had to work on daily. “It is of utmost importance for them to have a father or a fatherfigure in their lives because a child without a father or father-figure is a child without identity. The root cause of our societal crisis today is the fatherlessness of the younger generation and the mismanagement of manhood,” says Victor. Victor counts it as a great privilege that Timothy and all the children at Youthspace look up to him as a father in their lives. “By their own choice they call me Dad and I thank the Lord that I have not let them down as I set a standard for them of a manly behaviour, character and responsibilities towards God, the family

and society. I don’t always go about telling them to do this or that, but they learn from me mainly by observation,” says Victor. Timothy is currently studying Business management thanks to Siemens who is sponsoring his studies for the next 2 years. Just like Victor has been the dad and hero in his life, he now realises that he needs to set an example for the younger kids in the house that also look up to him. This has been an unbelievable game changer in Timothy finding his identity and realising that he too wants to be his own kids’ hero one day.

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

Let’s make a difference in July Nelson Mandela recognised education as the best vehicle to bring equality of opportunity to the world and once said that no country can really develop unless its citizens are educated. South Africa’s beloved first president would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year and it seems fitting for the company to continue the learning theme. Rather than plan activities only for 18 July (Mandela Day), we will spread our efforts throughout the month. By working together, we can make a difference at no less than 12 schools in SSA. Our activities will include: ◗ Refurbishment: The Saint-Gobain YouthBuild Academy will replace ceilings. ◗ Maintenance: Employee teams will fix broken windows, paint window frames, doors and classrooms. ◗ Collections: Everyone can donate stationery, books and magazines. ◗ Learner involvement: The sustainability team will teach some schools how to implement paper recycling to gain an income.
