Introduction Welcome to our price list for 2016/17 It’s been another eventful year, with lots of exciting developments, new products and partnerships on the way. 2015 saw the total integration of our two sales teams of Lanchester Wine Sales and Cellars into one, covering all aspects of the trade with enthusiasm and professionalism. We are available at any time to visit you at your premises, or even better, host a visit here at our Greencroft Estate to see the diversity and enthusiasm of the Lanchester business first hand. From the most modern bottling facility in Europe powered predominantly by renewable energy generated by wind turbines and heat pumps, as well as our superlative range of hampers and gifts, all designed and produced here, to our tasting room to enjoy some of the highest quality wines available in the UK. Lanchester is the only company in the liquor trade to be ‘Carbon Minus’
in other words we produce more green
energy than we use. The addition of our new 4 megawatt heat pumps in our Felling warehouses adds to this status. We’ve also invested heavily in our sister company, Greencroft Bottling by adding new filler lines to increase capacity by 25% to fill up to 90,000 bottles of wine per hour. The business is introducing many new wines this year including Super Premium Currency Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, bottled here at Greencroft Bottling. This wine will be the first in a new range of Premium category wines, beautifully presented with very relevant and quirky label designs. We see the future sales of well branded and affordably priced Super Premiums really taking off this year.
4
We purchased the total share capital of Spicers of Hythe in the last 12 months, the premier hamper company of the UK, and together we are now vying for top spot in UK gifting. Pet range Best in Show has been launched this year to a hugely positive reaction from buyers and customers alike, who love the quality and range of our pet gift offering. May I take this opportunity to thank you, our customers, for all your support over the last 12 months and we all look forward to offering you a world class range of top quality wines for you and your customers to enjoy.

English wine has a long and rich history dating back to the ancient Roman times when Caesars ruled the land. All across the country, different grapes and wineries have been established through the years. In this part of the world the Romans started it all, introducing vines presumably somewhere before the first century - 55 BC, the Roman Invasion, was one of those dates everyone knew. We don't know much about what the Vikings, Saxons, and other invading hordes did for British viticulture but the Normans were keener on writing everything down. So we do know that by about 1086 there were around fifty vineyards worthy of note, three of them in Somerset. That takes care of the first millennium AD. For three hundred years the industry flourished, until about 1350 when the Gulf Stream changed course and with it the weather. Production then started to dwindle, aided by various plagues which depopulated the countryside. Then Henry II married Eleanor of Aquitaine and gave the British access to the fine full-bodied wines of Bordeaux, sounding the death knell for the struggling national product. Finally Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, many of which had their own vineyards, hammered the nail in the coffin of large-scale English wine production. Thankfully the last 40 years has seen an upsurge with many quality wineries now in full swing, the English wine industry is only going one way and that is up in both production and quality. 22

The cultivation of vines goes back to antiquity in the countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea. It’s likely that the Romans brought the practice of viticulture to what is now modern day France. Like many other European countries under Roman rule, by the time Rome fell and barbarian tribes invaded, wine was firmly established as a trading commodity and a part of everyday life. France is currently the world’s number one producer of wine by volume. Nearly every type of wine imaginable is made in styles that vary from modern to very traditional. The top wine regions are Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Loire, Rhone Valley, Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon.

The rich history of Portugal is firmly intertwined with its wines, especially its most famous wine, Port. From the ancient cities of Lisbon and Porto to small medieval towns and Roman ruins, the past is still alive today in modern Portugal. In recent years something of a small revolution has occurred in the Douro region in terms of developing modern-style dry red and white wines, right along side the highly traditional production of Port wines. Portugal’s table wine had already been in high demand since the mid-seventeenth century, primarily by the British. To make rustic Portuguese wines more stable and palatable, small amounts of brandy were added to barrels of wine before shipment. Eventually British companies began investing in the area and perfected the process of adding brandy during fermentation, rather than after it, which preserved the distinctive fruity red wine flavours that were unique to Portugal’s Douro Valley region. 36

Wine has been made in Lebanon for at least 5,000 years since the Phoenicians domesticated grapes. Lebanon was, of course, part of the biblical land of Canaan. Lebanon has 300 days of sunshine a year which provides a long growing season. Today’s wine industry in Lebanon is still influenced by the French. The most heavily planted varietals include Cinsault, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Mourvedre. The wines of Musar are some of the most idiosyncratic of any wines produced anywhere today. They can be polarizing; some love them and some do not. These wines are made in the rustic style of days gone by. In a wine era where internationalism is a point of debate, these wines are made in a traditional method and not for any particular critics taste. 38

Romania is one of the world's largest wine producers and sixth largest among European countries – in 2015 it produced around 4.069 million hectolitres of wine. In recent years, Romania has attracted many European business people and wine buyers, due to the affordable prices of both vineyards and wines compared to other wine producing nations such as France, Germany, and Italy. Romania has one of the oldest wine making traditions in the world, its viticulture dating back more than 6,000 years. Due to the hot dry summers, the location proved to be successful and the grape vineyards thrived. Since the medieval times, wine has been the traditional alcoholic beverage of the Romanians.

New Zealand New Zealand extends 1,600km (1000 miles) from sub-tropical Northland (36° S) to the world’s most southerly grape growing region Central Otago (46° S). Vineyards benefit from the moderating effect of the maritime climate (no vineyard is more than 120km, or 80 miles, from the ocean) with long sunshine hours and nights cooled by sea breezes. New Zealand wine is distinctive for its purity, vibrancy and intensity. The long ripening period, a result of cool temperatures - allows flavour development whilst retaining fresh acidity, a balance for which New Zealand wines are renowned. There are a number of distinct major winegrowing regions spread throughout New Zealand, with the majority on the East coast of the Islands in the rain shadow of the mountains. Within these diverse regions, sub-regional characteristics are beginning to show through and wines are now being distinguished as being not just from a wine region, but from a sub-region and a place. We hope you enjoy discovering our regions and producers. Key New Zealand Wine Regions - Marlborough In 1973, as Marlborough’s first Sauvignon Blanc vines were being planted, no one could have predicted that this variety would attain superstar status within a couple of decades. The explosive flavours of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc have dazzled wine critics throughout the world, setting the international benchmark for the style. Pungently aromatic, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc assails the senses with red capsicum (bell pepper) and gooseberry characters through lush passionfruit and tropical fruit overtones. Other notes include fresh cut grass, tomato stalks, NORTH ISLAND grapefruit or limes. Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s AUKLAND most widely planted varietal. The first wine made in commercial quantities was produced in 1979. Early success at local and international wine competitions boosted winemakers’ confidence in the varietal, as well as consumer demand. By the early 1990s, Sauvignon Blanc was firmly established as New Zealand’s flagship wine, with local and international demand increasing every year. Hawkes Bay

To the south, it is just the opposite; featuring grasslands, national parks and terminating in the lush lake district of Patagonia. Chile's southern extremity is marked by Cape Horn, a treacherous headland surrounded by almost continuously storm-tossed seas. In the centre of the country, is a long and expansive river valley, a 500 mile corridor occupied in the north by vineyards and great farms and in the south by forests and enchanting lakes. Santiago, the capital, anchors the northern and more prosperous section of the central valley, with 40% of the population living in this area. The topography and terroir of Chile make it favourable to viticulture. The Pacific, with its Antarctic Humboldt current, brings cooling breezes to coastal vineyards, while the sheltering presence of the coastal mountain range makes Chile's Valle Central relatively warm and dry. Along the eastern edge of the country, in the foothills of the Andes, high altitudes and abundant meltwater rivers make for a different terroir again. The original grape of Chile is the PaĂs variety, brought in by the Spanish conquerors. To this day, it is the most cultivated red grape variety in Chile, producing a high yielding grape qualified for simple, rustic red wines. Today, internationally known grape varieties are also cultivated in Chile, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The wine industry in Argentina has seen growth, especially over the last five years. Its production standard has reached fifth in the world with exports growing steadily, especially to the United States. Most of Argentina’s growth has been due to increased quality in wine and with foreign investments, Argentina has had much success becoming a leader in the industry. The wines of Argentina are always considered to be part of the New World, which is kind of strange when you think about it. After all they have been making wine here since the 1550’s, a century before South Africa, and well over 200 years before the Australians planted their first vines in 1788 – an experiment that promptly failed. But rather than dwell on other’s misfortune, let’s just say Argentina has a long history of wine-making. Vines made their way to Argentina via four different routes, but the most commonly-told story is that Argentine wine-making began in the later half of the 16th century when Spanish missionaries and conquistadors brought vines with them from Spain. Some of these vines ended up in Peru, Chile, and the United States. 38 72

As the wines from South Africa continue to impress connoisseurs from all over the world, the growth of the vineyards has been steadily increasing and the latest figures show that the vineyards account for 105 566 hectares of land compared with the 1997 figure of 98 203 hectares. The first exports of wine from South Africa were very modest ones from the Constantia organized by Van der Stel’s son, Willem Adriaan. Later on in 1761 and 1762 the exports of red and white wine began to be noticed by the European market.

South Africa BUTTERFLY TREE The village of McGregor, in South Africa’s Breede River Valley, is home to the McGregor Winery. The winery, established in 1948, imposes a unique charm and history based on the proud Scottish heritage of the village. The modern day winery continues the philosophy of its founding fathers, to produce exceptional quality wines from the unique and varied terroir of the area. Grapes for our Butterfly Tree wines are grown in terroir ranging from the cooler climate of the Riviersonderend mountains to the more temperate conditions of the King’s River valley. This contributes to the unique wine styles and flavour profiles which make our Butterfly Tree wines stand out.

Fair Trade was founded to fight poverty through trade; we break the cycle of poverty and despair by helping people to help themselves. The world’s poor have skills and ability, but often lack opportunity; helping someone get engaged in trade and gain their fair share of the benefits offers a route to a brighter future, for them, their families and their communities.

All stills have to have a name or a reference mark registered with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, and Durham Distillery’s pride and joy is “Lily” a handmade 400l copper pot still. The still has a gin basket, which contains some of the botanicals, and a worm tub – a traditional cooling system which turns the vapour into gin. Define the Wine.....
CABERNET SAUVIGNON Origins: It is the Bordeaux region of western France that Cabernet Sauvignon calls home. Here, on the gravel soils of the ‘left bank’ of the Gironde Estuary, it produces some of the world’s greatest red wines: such as those from the Chateau of Lafite, Latour, Margaux and Mouton-Rothschild. Ironically in the relatively cool and fickle climate of this region very few of the hundreds of claret wines are produced solely from Cabernet Franc, faster ripening varieties that contribute more fruit flavours to the final blend. Distribution: Rather like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon is used to make wine in just about every wine country in the world. Being a late-ripening red variety it does require more sunlight and a warmer climate and is therefore absent from very cool climate regions. In warmer regions such as the Napa Valley of California or Coonawarra and Margaret River in Australia, It arraigns levels of ripeness that makes it unnecessary to blend it with other varieties. Character: Often blended, even outside Bordeaux: Cabernet-Shiraz being one of the most popular styles made in Australia. This is because, whilst as a grape it does have many attractive traits, it can seem to lack fruit and be a touch lean in the middle-palate if not fully ripe. However, this could be seen as being hypercritical, as good quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes produce wines with piercing blackcurrant fruit, backed by a superb structure of acid and tannin, which complement oak-derived spicy flavours. Ageing: The best variety for ageing, although many modern wines are made for early consumption with limited tannin extraction and oak ageing. Top quality wines from good vintages have fruit concentration and structure to improve for decades, developing complex, integrated, secondary-fruit flavours. Food Matching: With sturdy tannins and good, concentrated, dark fruit character, the best matches are with rare, dark meats such as beef and lamb and those dishes containing cream, butter or cheese. These rare meats and dairy products act to soften the tannins and highlight the wines fruit character. Cabernet Sauvignon can also work well with rich, game dishes.

MERLOT Origins: Merlot’s heritage is still unknown, however the earliest records indicate it appeared on the Right Bank of the Dordogne in the eighteenth century. Today, around this area and the town of Saint-Emilion, Merlot thrives on these clay and limestone soils and is the most important grape. Distribution: Merlot’s ability to produce soft, rounded, richly textured wine with ripe plum and blackberry fruit flavours has led to its success right around the world. There are major plantings in California, Chile, Australia and South Africa, which generally produce riper less herbaceous wines with sweeter, softer tannins than those from France. There are also significant Italian plantings in the north-east and Tuscany. In the mid-1990s it was the fifth most planted grape in Italy, the wines produced tend to be of the light easy-drinking style. Character: Merlot is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux, due to its tendency to ripen faster and add a ripe fruit dimension that is rarely found in wines made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon improves the blend by adding structure (tannin and acidity) and complementary fruit flavours. Wines made from just Merlot have a lovely juicy fruit character on a soft, rounded, silky palate. Oak ageing can be used successfully on the more concentrated wines, which may also exhibit a touch of vanilla-spice. Ageing: Wines made to a light, fruity style, such as basic wines from Chile or the south of France should be enjoyed whilst young. Even a reserve quality wine from Chile will be at its best when three to four years old. However, Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe and top Pomerol wines may still be young at fifteen years old. Food Matching: This depends on the weight and style of the wine; the soft, fruity, New World wines are very flexible and can partner a wide variety of dishes from roast duck to a chicken curry. Fuller-bodied Bordeaux or concentrated Californian Merlots go well with equally rich, strongly flavoured dishes based around beef, lamb or venison.

Define the Wine.....
PINOT NOIR Origins: Evidence suggests Pinot Noir may have been cultivated in Burgundy in the 4th century. The earliest written records for Pinot Noir appear in the late 14th century and indicated it had already been singled out as the premium grape of Burgundy. If Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s first home, the Champagne region, just to the north, is its second. Distribution: Difficult to cultivate, for many reasons, not least because its thin grape skins are both liable to split to sunburn, it has taken a while to establish itself outside France. However, the superb wine it produces, such as Nuit-Saint-Georges and Gevrey-Chambertin, has encouraged winemakers to persevere and this effort has been rewarded. High quality Pinot Noirs now hail from cool vineyard sites in California, New Zealand and Australia. It is called Pinot Nero in Italy. Character: Due to Pinot Noir’s light, thin skin, great effort is made to extract as much colour and tannins as possible. The grape has a good affinity with oak and the best grapes will be fermented in new French oak barrels with the final wine also being aged in oak barrels. Pinot Noir can produce very complex wines, generally it has a red-fruit character and silky, smooth tannins. In Champagne Pinot Noir tends to provide the structure for the blend; here, it is gently pressed and the juice quickly separated from the red skins. Any contact the juice has with the skins for longer than an hour will result in a rose coloured wine. Ageing: Whilst Grand Cru Burgundies can be at their best between ten and fifteen years old, the majority of Pinot Noir wines, with their light tannin structure, should be drunk quite young. A top New Zealand or Californian example will be at its best at about five years old. Food Matching: Red Burgundy is a fantastic food wine. The lighter styled wines are very flexible, matching duck, pheasant and poultry dishes extremely well. Pinot Noir works very well with mushrooms and truffles, the lightest incarnations can even partner meaty fish dishes like tuna and salmon. Champagne is under-utilised as a food wine, its positive acidity provides a cleansing foil for many rich or salty dishes.

Define the Wine.....
SANGIOVESE Origins: Sangiovese is at home in Italy: from the valleys of the Alps to the Sicilian shores, Sangiovese dominates Italian red wine production. Sangiovese has been grown for hundreds of years, it is genetically very varied, a good indicator of an ancient variety, but this has also made it too difficult to pin point its home region. Distribution: Sangiovese is not a global variety and there are only a few plantings in New World countries such as Australia where it is often blended. But with over 60,000 hectares planted in Italy often being called by a local synonym, for example Brunello in Montalcino, Sangiovese occupies more vineyard space in Italy, than Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc do in Franc, combined. Character: Sangiovese does well in warm but not hot climates, with an unusually long ripening period, it just will not deliver enough fruit flavours to make food wine in cool conditions. Even in its home in Tuscany it is blended with other faster ripening grape varieties to make Chianti. Wines made from Sangiovese benefit from some wood ageing, generally in large, old chestnut barrels, which helps to soften and integrate the tannin. There is a more recent trend to use smaller, new oak barrels: this can improve Sangiovese wines, which benefit from spicy, vanilla Nuances. Ageing: Simple, unoaked wines should be consumed within a few years; ideally they should be fresh, light, with soft tannins and a vibrant red berry fruit character. Wood aged wines such as a Chianti Reserva from a good vintage will benefit from a few years in a bottle. However, a top Brunello Montaclino could be drinking well after more than a decade. Food Matching: It is in Tuscany, the renowned centre of good food where Sangiovese demonstrates its qualities to make superb food wines. Wines like Chianti, Brunello Di Montaclino and Vino Nobile Di Montalcino are fantastic partners of roast meats, game, hearty pasta and dishes with wild mushroom, cheese or tomato sauces. Sangiovese’s positive acidity levels help balance it with fresh tomato sauces.

Define the Wine.....
SYRAH/SHIRAZ Origins: Whilst it is difficult to tie down the exact date or even era in which Syrah was first isolated as a grape variety, it is certain that it is one of France’s most ancient varieties and may have been grown in the south of France in Roman times. Distribution: Syrah has not been adopted universally around the newer wine regions in the world, although in the last decade it seems to have been more widely planted, it has done spectacularly well in Australia, where it is called Shiraz (a name that has been adopted in many other countries). First introduced to Australia in the 1830’s, there are now almost twice as many hectares of Shiraz planted in Australia than in the Rhone Valley. There are also major plantings in Argentina and California. Character: The name the winemaker chooses to use to identify the grape can help give an idea to its style: Syrah labelled wines are often minerally, with perfumed fruit flavours and a smoky, herbaceous style; whilst Shiraz labelled wines tend to have sweeter, richer almost chocolatey fruit and perhaps less finesse. Syrah is often used as part of a blend in France and also in Australia where Cabernet-Shiraz is a very successful style. It can produce full- bodied, dark, concentrated wines if subjected to a prolonged fermentation, these are generally aged in new French or American oak barrels. With a short ‘maceration’ (skin-contact) period it can produce light, fresh, strawberry and raspberry flavoured wines or even easy-drinking roses. In Australia they even produce sparkling red Shiraz? Ageing: Many wines made to a light fruity style, with only minimum or no oak ageing, are at their best when young. Those made to a dark, concentrated style that are aged in new oak prior to bottling can improve over many years. Hermitage or top Australian Shiraz wines can still be improving at ten years old and then have another decade whilst at their best. Food Matching: Much depends on the style of wine: concentrated Rhone Syrah with its spicy, smoky, palate goes extremely well with most game such as venison, grouse or guinea fowl, as well as beef or lamb dishes. Full-bodied Australian Shiraz’s with their sweet, ripe fruit are ideal for rich or chilli spiced lamb or beef dishes; whilst lighter-styled wines can be good with chicken or pork casseroles.

Define the Wine.....
TEMPRANILLO Origins: it is highly likely that Tempranillo originated in Spain: although, according to one story it was brought to the Rioja region by monks travelling from Burgundy on their way to Santiago as gifts to Spanish monasteries along the way. Whilst growing widely across Spain, often under synonyms such as Cencibel or Tina de Toro, it is the region of Rioja that has raised Tempranillo to its current high status. Distribution: it spread to Portugal from Spain, where it is often called Tinta Roriz. Unlike Cabernet or Chardonnay it has quite a restricted range, with the vast majority of Tempranillo being grown inside the Iberian Peninsula. There are Tempranillo vineyards outside of Europe, yet only in Argentina could the plantings of Tempranillo be described as extensive. Character: The best Tempranillo-based wines, generally from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions, are famed for being oak-aged. It used to be the case, particularly in Rioja, that this was for many years in old oak barrels. However, the modern trend is to increase the flavours extracted from the grape skins and have a shorted maturation in new French oak barrels. This produces wine with dark fruit flavours such as plum and black cherries with vanilla notes, rather than wine, with softer, red-berry fruit flavours like strawberry and raspberry. Ageing: As with most red wines, providing the structure of the wine is suitable and there is plenty of good fruit extract in the wine, they will benefit from further development in the bottle. However, what needs to be borne in mind is that in Rioja there is a culture of fully maturing the wines in barrel and bottle prior to release, making Rioja wines some of the most mature when shipped. Food Matching: Unsurprisingly, these wines tend to make great partners for Spanish foods, in particular those dishes with some warmth from paprika or peppers. Therefore, dishes with spicy chorizo, goulash and chicken cooked with peppers all work well, these wines can also partner roasted game like venison, wild boar and pheasant. Dishes flavoured with rosemary and Tempranillo wines also seem to have a natural affinity.

Define the Wine.....
CHARDONNAY Origins: Chardonnay dominates the white wines of eastern France, where it first appeared in the Middle Ages: a major constituent of Champagne, it also produces Chablis as well as all great Burgundies. DNA fingerprinting has recently revealed that Chardonnay is the offspring of Pinot Noir, the red grape of Burgundy also used in Champagne. Distribution: Too Numerous to detail, Chardonnay’s adaptability and versatility in both the vineyard and the winery, combined with its ability to produce high quality wine, have resulted in it being planted in just about every wine producing country. Character: In cool climates it produces a leaner, steelier style, with a pronounced acidity (eg Chablis). Whilst in warmer vineyards it develops honey and buttery characteristics (eg Puligny-Montrachet) and in the warmest vineyards, tropical fruit flavours like pineapple and mango, but at the sacrifice of lower acidity levels. Often these warmer climate wines are barrel-fermented and or aged in oak. Chardonnay has a great affinity with oak, and is always dry, sometimes in leaner, steelier wines very dry. Ageing: One of the best white grapes for ageing, the lean or sparkling styles have high acidity levels which act as a preservative. Oak tannins also act as a preservative in the barrel-fermented and oak aged wines. Aged Chardonnay, particularly those wines that have had oak contact, develop a rich, creamy, nut and fruit palate, backed with an integrated vanilla-oak finish. Food Matching: Due to the wide range of styles that Chardonnay can produce there is a wine for most occasions. For light delicate seafood dishes try a Chablis style; with roast chicken or pork a lightly oaked wine is a superb match; whilst the fruit-driven New World examples and top Burgundies are great with the richest fish and light meat dishes. Oaky Chardonnays are good with smoked fish and can make interesting partners for mildly spicy south-east Asian influenced foods.
114
Define the Wine.....
CHENIN BLANC Origins: Chenin Blanc had been grown in the Loire Valley for over 1,000 years producing wines like Coteaux du Layon (luscious yet racy, sweet whites). Vouvray (dry, medium, sweet and sparkling whites). And dry, sparkling Saumur. Distribution: South Africa produces the most wine from Chenin Blanc. It has over twice the vineyard area of Loire Valley. However, it is only recently that South Africa has begun to produce wines that could be described as better than just basic, from this tricky grape to grow. The best examples combine a rich, honeyed, ripe pear and pineapple fruit character with a racy acidity, these may even be oak aged. Character: Chenin Blanc can perform an important role on a wine list, the South African wines have a delicious peach and pear fruit character with aromatic, spicy notes. These wines are generally off-dry and provide a welcome change to many dry wines that appear on the everyday list, being extremely enjoyable with or without food. Ageing: A classic sweet wine, such as a Coteaux du Layon, has the balance to improve over many decades, maturing into a golden nectar: with a fruit character of honeyed pears, brioche, peach and barley sugar. The majority of wine produced is designed for more immediate drinking and so are best enjoyed within five years; this is also true of the sparkling wines. Food Matching: The key to South African Chenin Blanc’s relationship with food is the slight sweetness many possess. Many dishes prepared with ingredients that act as sweeteners, such as ripe fruits, coconut milk, sugar or honey, need a wine partner that is not too dry: or the wine can taste dull and thin. As such they can be brilliant food wines, they often have superb positive acidity, which acts as a palate cleanser, and the fruit character can add an excellent dimension to the food. Try them with pork and apple; light fish dishes; chicken with a creamy sauce; salads; semi-soft-pungent cheeses or tarte tatin!

Define the Wine.....
PINOT GRIGIO Origins: A grape that was relatively unknown a few years ago, but has gained an immense following both in the UK and around the world recently. Whilst it is cultivated in many central European countries, under many names, Pinot Grigio (both the name and style) hails from north-east Italy. Distribution: It remains to be seen whether a large number of plantings appear in New World countries, it does appear to be more widely planted though. Look out for slightly less-dry examples from Germany, and fruitier wines from California. Character: The grapes are harvested at the earliest opportunity, often in the cool of the night, to ensure they retain their acidity levels. Generally has a very-to-bone-dry, delicately flavoured palate with citrusy and peach aromas. Un-oaked and cool-fermented it is often backed with a refreshing, minerally finish. The more flavoursome examples undergo a period of ‘maceration’; the juice remaining in contact with the skins for a period of 12 hours, to extract the maximum amount of aromatic flavours. Ageing: Rather like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio is best consumed whilst young when fresh and vibrant. Food Matching: With a light, delicate flavour spectrum, Pinot Grigio makes an ideal partner for similarly delicately flavoured dishes. Therefore, it’s good with green salads, shellfish and light fish dishes. It’s refreshing acidity cuts through charcuterie (salami etc) and can cope with light tomato sauces.
116
Define the Wine.....
RIESLING Origins: Riesling first appeared in the Rhine Valley in Germany in the 1550’s. From here it’s just a short journey to Alsace, its second home where it has been planted for over 400 years and produces drier, more minerally wines. Distribution: Riesling is a grape best suited to cool growing conditions, where a long ripening periods aids the development of wines with rich, citrusy acidities and a delicious mixture of floral and mineral fruit. Great examples are produced in New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Australia and Chile also offer excellent wines from the cool vineyard areas of Clare Valley and Bio Bio. Character: Maybe one of the reasons that Riesling is not more widely enjoyed is that it can make sweet wines, although doesn’t always, and these are (wrongly) perceived to be of low quality and to lack sophistication. Generally Riesling is not oak aged and the winemaking emphasises the fragrant, aromatic nature of the grape, which often reflects its ‘terroir’ (vineyard site) in a way unmatched by any other variety. All that one really needs to enjoy some of the world’s most refreshing and appealing white wines, is to select once with the desired levels of dryness. Ageing: Riesling usually makes wine with fantastically integrated, citrusy, acidity levels. Whilst this means the wines are some of the most refreshing to enjoy young, this acidity also acts as a preservative, allowing many wines to undergo a long bottle maturation with plenty of secondary-fruit development. Food Matching: Much depends on the sweetness of the wine; if dryish the refreshing, minerally palate and limey acidity are perfect with many fish dishes, particularly smoked fish. The positive acidity levels work really well with meats and high fat content served with light fruity sauces. Wine with a little sweetness also works well with spicy, south-east Asian cuisine containing sweet ingredients like coconut milk or palm sugar. Salads, which can be difficult to match, due to vinegar or lemon juice in the dressing, often work well with Riesling.
117
Define the Wine.....
SAUVIGNON BLANC Origins: The winemakers of both the Bordeaux region and the Loire Valley claim Sauvignon Blanc as their own, where it appears to have been used in both regions for many centuries. Being a late budding and early ripening variety, Sauvignon Blanc is perfectly adapted to these regions’ relatively cool climates. The best, unblended Sauvignon Blanc’s in France come from the Central Vineyards region of the Loire, famed for Sancerre and Pouilly Fume. Distribution: A good traveller: Sauvignon Blanc is now widely planted in Europe and the rest of the winemaking world. The countries with major plantings that are producing the best quality are New Zealand, California, Chile and South Africa. New Zealand, particularly the Marlborough region, produces wines to rival, and some say better, the best from France. Some excellent examples are produced in the Casablanca Valley in Chile. Character: Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic variety, which is generally at its best when unoaked and young. Generally the wines it produces have high acidity levels and are often dry. Cooler climate wines from France and Italy are crisp, minerally with aromatic, gooseberry fruit. New World wines exhibit more tropical fruit flavours and can be significantly weightier and more intense. Ageing: the very best Bordeaux wines, which also contain a percentage of Semillon in the blend and may be oak aged, can last up to ten years. This is the rare exception to the rule, as most Sauvignon Blanc wines are at their best within a year and are best enjoyed whilst young. Food Matching: Sauvignon Blanc wines with their positive acidity, dry and refreshing fruit character perfectly complement light seafood salads, fish soups and grilled or smoked fish. They make good partners for dishes flavoured with dill, tarragon or chive. Their high acidity levels mean that they will taste fresh and lively when matched with similar acidic foods, like those with a citrusy or fresh tomato sauce.

Define the Wine.....
VIOGNIER Origins: An ancient variety that possible originated along the Dalmatian coast before being brought to the Rhone Valley by the Romans. Once fairly common in southern France it reached its nadir in the middle of the 1960s when there were only three hectares planted in the northern Rhone – it was almost extinct. It is here in the northern Rhone that is produces Condreiu, its most admired incarnation; although it is also famed as the white grape often added, in tiny quantities, to Cote Rotie to give an extra dimension to the bouquet. Distribution: In the 1980s the grape started to travel the world: first populating vineyards in the south of France and then California, Chile, Australia, South Africa and other countries in Europe such as Italy. It prefers a warm to hot climate, although cool nights help to preserve its acidity levels during ripening: as important component to balance its strongly aromatic fruit character. Character: Well known for its floral character, similar to Riesling or Muscat, it also shows stone fruit such as peach and apricot and notes of musk. It can be quite rich and has a tendency to be quite weighty on the palate; making sure the grapes are harvested at exactly the right time can help balance this, with freshness from the natural grape acids. With a huge personality and defined aromatic character it is often blended with other grapes such as Chardonnay or other aromatic varietals including Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc; as well as with Syrah (or Shiraz) mimicking the practice of Cote Rotie. Ageing: Wine made from Viognier should ideally be consumed whilst relatively young: it typically loses its aromatic perfume as it ages. Depending on the winemaking style, the wine can often be at its best during the first year or two after bottling; although some can stay at their best for up to eight years. Food Matching: The highly aromatic and fruit forward nature of the grape allows Viognier to pair well with spicy and full-flavoured foods: it is often quoted as being ideal for Asian dishes such as Thai or light Indian curries. It often works well with savoury dishes containing honey, cream or ginger as dominant ingredients.

We are investing in major improvements at Abbotsford, with a new roof fitted and a complete electrical re-wiring and substation. New doors and dock levellers are among the myriad of improvements we are making to the whole fabric of the building. The most exciting investment is two massive ground water source heat pumps, being installed at the two Felling warehouses at a cost of ÂŁ3million. They will provide sustainable heat, as well as providing a major contribution to flood defences in the area. They will produce 4 megawatts of heat between them which is the second largest installation of its type in the UK.
A new Joloda automatic loading system is being installed in all four locations at a cost of ÂŁ400,000. The loading of a 26 pallet truck will then take only 5 minutes and be fully automatic, as opposed to 35 minutes by a forklift. With our volumes as high as they are, we are expecting payback from the investment in 2 years. Our modern fleet of trucks deliver nationwide, from full 26 pallet loads down to 10 cases on our regional vans. Our latest tractor units are Euro 6 spec with clean engine management, and our forklift trucks run on clean gas, helping boost our sustainability immeasurably.
