Fatboy Animations

The man behind Mbugua Entrepreneur and animator Michael Muthiga Creator of the hilarious Mbugua character from the Faiba adverts and arguably the most in-demand animator in the country, Michael Muthiga is the brains and talent behind the company Fatboy Animations, founded in 2010. After studying civil engineering and teaching himself the animation process, Michael now produces some of the most iconic adverts and animations in the entertainment world. He spoke to Kirsten Alexander about his exciting career in animation.

Q. What sparked your interest in animation and how did you start the process of becoming an animator?

Q. What was your first animation project? And how – if at all — has your style and technique changed since then?

A: I actually had the interest in animation from the time I was young. I was just a bit confused on what to study once I graduated from high school. However, I was 100 per cent sure about animation and the desire to pursue it came when I got a job as an animator on the ‘Tinga Tinga Tales’ series. I learnt a lot on this job. My skills were well polished while working and I got to be in an environment full of other animators and designers.

A: When I worked as a lead animator on ‘Tinga Tinga Tales’, the style was 2D animation. Thereafter, I got a couple of contracts from some telco companies to produce animations for them, and the style for these was 3D – 3D has always been my interest, but 2D animation applies similar principles which I use. My first big contract was from Orange Telkom. This was the first time I tried out animation in 3D.

Q. How did your family and friends react to your transition from civil engineering into animation? A: My parents were very supportive of whichever career I chose to pursue. They were only concerned that I should be able to make a living out of what I chose to do.

Fatboy Animations

Q. How many people does it typically take to get an advert from conception to realisation? A: Well, around four to six depending on the size of the commercial. In some cases we have to hire different specialities for the project, not just character animation. At times we need character designs, voice artists, casting agents, directors, producers, painters, background artists, IT specialists, etc.

Q. How do you decide which companies to work with? Do you end up turning down many requests? A: We hardly turn down requests. However, for some companies that may bring conflict of interest, we do turn down the jobs. Also if we are not yet at the capacity to produce some level of animation – but that is very rare, as we can produce some of the best animation in this world.

Q. Why do you think your Mbugua character has become so popular? Did you ever expect the response to be so big? A: No, I did not expect the response to be huge. Mbugua is popular because so many people can relate to him. He is the typical Kikuyu Kenyan businessman and he behaves just as we would in real life, so a lot of people connect with Mbugua.

Q. What do you enjoy most about the animation process? A: I enjoy completing the animation and just sitting back to watch it. I enjoy learning new software solutions to animation as well as hardware evolution. 8

Africa’s low cost airline

One needs to have attention to detail and also be a good storyteller, something a lot of animators miss out on Q. You’ve won several awards throughout your career so far. Is there one you’re particularly proud of? A: I am proud of the Kalasha awards because I always looked up to those who won before me, back when I was much younger, and having finally won one made me so happy and proud.

Q. How is the general animation scene in Kenya right now? How much are young people being encouraged to enter this industry? A: It is growing rapidly and opportunities are coming up everywhere. Not enough is being done to encourage this industry, however. I think a lot more should be done, especially by our government.

Q. What personal qualities does it take to become a successful animator? A: It takes a lot of commitment, patience and sacrifice. One needs to have attention to detail and also to be a good storyteller, something a lot of animators miss out on. Animation is really about telling a story rather than just making an object move.

Q. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? A: I like to travel a lot. I like to just relax, sit at home and watch a movie – animated movies, mostly. I do enjoy a good cup of tea with Sen on Fridays. Sen is my friend – he handles a lot of the 2D animation work.

At Skydive Diani, however, they have other ideas: a quick flight above Diani, before they throw you out of the plane – with an instructor and parachute, of course – and you start to make your way quickly back down to earth. This ‘tandem’ type of skydive is the best option for beginners, as you can enjoy the exhilarating experience while your instructor does all the hard work. The rush is amazing and the views of Diani are unforgettable; but, in case you want to relive the experience, you can have your skydive recorded for an extra fee.

WHITE WATER RAFTING IN SAGANA Although Jinja is often described as East Africa’s adventure capital, Kenya could give the Ugandan city a run for its money when it comes to white water rafting. A section of the Tana River that flows through Sagana has excellent rapids that range from gentle (Class II) to more powerful (Class V) and promise an exhilarating journey that varies from calm to crazy waters. Savage Wilderness is one of the leading companies to offer rafting experiences in Sagana. Operating from a nearby camp, it provides equipment and qualified guides for each trip to ensure a wet and wild – but also safe – experience.

Each flight lasts about 25 minutes as you glide through the air and take in the magnificent views of Borana and Lewa. Conditions are best between June and September, and also in December and January, so be sure to plan ahead. You don’t need any experience to take part, just a lust for adventure. ZIP LINING AT THE FOREST The Forest – in Kereita Forest, Kiambu County – is a haven for adventure lovers, with a variety of activities that include archery, paintballing, nature walks and mountain biking. Set high above the stunning greenery, the zip line course at The Forest lasts for around two hours and lets you experience the rush of flying through the air at speed, giving you a thrill like no other. Protective gear is provided and the zip lines are managed by Flying Fox and operated under European Union safety regulations, so the only thing for you have to worry about is when you can find time to come back for more!

Zanzibar

Fun for all the family Top tips for visiting Zanzibar with kids Travelling with children can be a bit of a headache. No matter how much time you spend preparing and planning, you can’t always guarantee a tantrum-free time with your little ones. Before you set off, it’s always a good idea to make sure your trip is as family-friendly as possible, so 540 is giving you a helping hand with our guide to family-friendly Zanzibar, including where to stay, where to eat and what to do.

WHERE TO STAY: Baraza Resort & Spa One of the island’s most luxurious resorts, Baraza Resort & Spa ticks all the boxes for an unforgettable stay without compromising on quality family facilities. Accommodation is available as a range of villas, many of which have two bedrooms, making it the perfect choice for families. The dedicated children’s club offers a variety of games and activities to make sure your little ones don’t get bored

during your stay. A shallow children’s pool is available, too, as well as a range of beach activities that you can enjoy as a family, including frisbee beach tennis, football and volleyball.

Bluebay Beach Resort Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa caters for everything: weddings, honeymoons, meetings, events, holidays and, of course, families. The resort offers a professionally run kids’ club called Toto Club which caters for children aged between three and 13. Toto Club organises weekly themed programmes, including a range

of activities, both indoor and outdoor, and its staff are trained in first aid for customers’ reassurance. Babysitter services are also available at an additional charge. Zanzibar OCEAN PARADISE  The clue’s in the name

Ocean Paradise Resort & Spa Located in north-east Zanzibar, Ocean Paradise Resort & Spa really does live up to its moniker, especially for those visiting with children. The well-kept and picturesque resort has plenty to offer children of all ages, from babysitting services to dedicated children’s menus to a kids’ pool.

Families needn’t worry about being apart, as connecting rooms are available – ideal for keeping an eye on little ones or giving teenagers a bit of privacy. The animation team offers a range of activities for families that includes evening entertainment and fun sports and games.

THINGS TO DO: Head to the beach On an island famous for its beautiful beaches, it can be hard deciding which one to visit. While the adults can appreciate the stunning scenery of many of Zanzibar’s beaches, the kids will no doubt be more interested in building sand castles or splashing around in the water. Why not pack a ball for a fun kick-around, or some snorkelling goggles so the kids can try and spot the water’s inhabitants.

18

Many beaches close to resorts or towns have places to eat and drink nearby, but it’s always a good idea to check beforehand and take some drinks and snacks with you just in case.

Jozani Forest Officially known as Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, Jozani Forest is Zanzibar’s leafy oasis and the island’s only national park. A haven for wildlife, Jozani is one of the few places where you can see Kirk’s red colobus monkeys, a species endemic

to Zanzibar, in addition to Sykes' monkeys, bush babies, tree hyraxes and a variety of birds and butterflies. Sensible shoes are advised for all visitors, yet the forest walk is not overly strenuous, making it a popular choice for anyone with children, who will no doubt enjoy getting close to the playful colobus monkeys and learning about the forest’s ecosystem and inhabitants.

Changuu (Prison Island) Around 5 km north-west of Zanzibar is Changuu, also known as Prison Island, home to a large family of giant tortoises and a popular day-trip destination away from the main island of Unguja. The nickname Prison Island dates back to the 1800s, when a prison was built on the island to house violent criminals, but no prisoners were ever kept there. Instead, visitors today can find some of the island’s giant tortoises seeking shelter in the abandoned building. The giant tortoises are popular with adults and children alike and most tours also offer the chance to spend time enjoying the island’s beautiful beaches and clear waters.

TUCK IN  Plenty of great food options for families

PLACES TO EAT: Tamu Gelateria Italiana What better way could there possibly be to cool down on a hot day than a scoop or two of traditional Italian gelato? Hidden in the labyrinthine backstreets of Stone Town, Tamu Gelateria Italiana is a small establishment serving scoops of gelato in a wide range of flavours including ginger, peanut butter, coconut and mango, although the flavours tend to change depending on seasonal availability of ingredients. The glass display counter is fun for kids as it lets them see exactly what’s on offer and helps them decide for themselves. Desserts and hot food, including pizzas, are available, too, if ice cream isn’t your thing.

6 DEGREES SOUTH  Everyone will love the views

House of Spices Don’t let the name put you off if you have fussy eaters. House of Spices in Stone Town is a perfect choice for families, thanks to the child-friendly menu, welcoming staff and laid-back atmosphere. For the grown-ups, or more adventurous youngsters, House of Spices serves a variety of dishes, from local favourites to Italian classics. The restaurant is well known for its delicious pizzas – a hit with the younger visitors – which come with a variety of toppings to please even the fussiest eater.

6 Degrees South A firm favourite on Unguja is 6 Degrees South. The restaurant is renowned for its seafood and wonderful views, but also caters well for guests with children. There is a dedicated children’s menu that includes favourites such as macaroni cheese and burger and chips, while the adults, or more adventurous eaters, can enjoy the restaurant’s new menu with a focus on fresh salads. Colouring books are available to entertain the little ones, although they will no doubt love gazing over the ocean and watching the dhows glide past – an even more magical experience at sunset.

Astrotourism

By Kirsten Alexander Pictures courtesy of The Travelling Telescope

Kenya is a shining star in

ASTROTOURISM Each year, tourists visit Kenya for a host of reasons, not least our wonderful national parks and magnificent coastline. Now, one of the latest trends, astrotourism, has begun to flourish here, too. Kirsten Alexander finds out more.

A

strotourism is essentially a branch of tourism that involves astronomy, stargazing and celestial events. And while it may be a new thing in Kenya, it has long been popular in other parts of the world. Perhaps the best-known destination for celestial events is Iceland, which draws thousands of visitors each year to

witness the awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. While Kenya’s most famous natural spectacle, the great migration, takes place firmly on the ground, a small but growing number of people are looking to our skies for a different way to experience the beauty and magic of Kenya, aided in part by an organisation called The Travelling Telescope.

Astrotourism

The Travelling Telescope helps to encourage both children and adults to learn more about astronomy and to promote Kenya as a worthy addition to the list of worldwide astrotourism hot spots. Founded by Susan Murabana and Daniel Chu Owen, who met at the 2013 solar eclipse in Turkana, The Travelling Telescope visits schools, holds public events and organises star safaris to educate local people and tourists about what goes on in Kenya’s sky at night.

Fascination “We started out mostly with schools, but soon realised that adults also have a fascination with space that was mostly never nurtured at school,” Susan and Chu explain. “Now we have both a schools programme and a tourism programme and we also organise events around huge celestial spectacles.” The Travelling Telescope’s schools programme consists

‘The telescope has been around for more than 400 years, yet most people have never had a chance to look through one’ of one-off visits to schools and clubs to teach the students about astronomy and science and let them get hands-on with its tools and equipment. For tourists, The Travelling Telescope offers services

for guests at lodges across Kenya, including in Laikipia, Amboseli and the Masai Mara, where guests can take advantage of the clear skies for a bit of stargazing. So what is it about Kenya that has so much potential to tap into the astrotourism market? Susan and Chu explain: “Being on the equator means that Kenya holds a unique position on earth, as we are able to see both hemispheres of the sky. The national parks and tourist destinations are mostly in rural areas with unpolluted skies, giving some of the finest views of the night sky, and the high altitude means night-time temperatures are very favourable for stargazing.” While all these factors point to a great destination for astrotourism, the market is largely untapped, so Susan and Chu are working hard to get children and adults alike interested in space and science. “The telescope has been around for more than 400 years, yet most

people have never had a chance to look through one,” say Susan and Chu. “Astronomy is a science that sparks curiosity and intrigue and we feel that using astronomy can get our children interested in science and encourage them to take careers in science.”

Universe So far, the response to The Travelling Telescope has been overwhelmingly positive. “We have realised that the local and international community are very interested in learning more about the universe,” say Susan and Chu. “We have received lots of publicity from leading international and local media agencies, including CNN, BBC, Fox News and many more.” If you’re interested in learning more about astronomy or getting involved with The Travelling Telescope, go to www.travellingtelescope.co.uk for information, events and resources.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION  Susan Murabana, managing director of The Travelling Telescope, has been involved in astronomy outreach for at least a decade. She has a degree in economics and has also studied astronomy. In addition to The Travelling Telescope, she is the national coordinator of Universe Awareness, Global Hands-On Universe and Astronomers Without Borders. Daniel Chu Owen, technical director of The Travelling Telescope, has also been involved in astronomy outreach for 10 years. He has a degree in film and has worked on Al Jazeera’s award-winning show ‘Earthrise’ among others. Chu is an astrophotographer and communicator with a passion for using science to make the world a better place.

Some travel and tour operators, however, insist that you purchase insurance when booking with them, particularly if you will be taking part in any activities that carry a risk, such as going on safari or anything involving extreme sports – although, for general holidays, it is often not required. So why bother with travel insurance if you’re just going to be spending a whole week lazing on a beach? A basic travel insurance policy essentially covers you for

24

the unexpected, such as flight delays, lost baggage and falling ill, which can and does happen to large numbers of holidaymakers. There are many levels of travel insurance. Most companies offer customisable policies to suit your travel needs. A basic policy, however, should cover the cost of the following:

If you’re a frequent traveller, or have more than one getaway planned in a year, you could consider an annual policy If you decide to purchase travel insurance, or are required to do so by your travel provider, you can browse various policies from a range of providers to find one that suits your travel requirements. When purchasing a policy, you will have to pay a premium, which covers you for the details listed in the policy. If you don’t need to make a claim, the premium is all you need to pay.

• Cancellation – if you have to cut short or cancel your holiday • Flight delay – the length of delay before a claim can be made depends on a range of factors including the airline’s own rules • Personal belongings and baggage cover – in case they’re lost, damaged or stolen • Emergency assistance – usually a 24-hour helpline to assist you in an emergency • Medical cover – if you’re taken ill or involved in an accident while travelling abroad.

Excesses

CANCELLED  What to do when the worst happens?

Be sure to take note of any excesses charged, however, as you will be liable to pay these if you make a claim. For example, if you make a claim for lost baggage and the insurer states it will pay out KES 60,000 subject to a KES 10,000 excess, then the insurer will pay out the total amount minus the excess – in this example, KES 50,000. It’s also worth checking how much your insurer will pay out in the event of a claim to ensure that you and your belongings will be fully covered if the worst happens.

If you’re a frequent traveller, or have more than one getaway planned in a year, you could consider an annual policy, which may work out cheaper than buying a new single policy every time you travel. If you’re going to be travelling to multiple destinations, make sure you’re fully covered for each getaway before you purchase.

Medical conditions

KEEP IT SAFE  Lost luggage can ruin a holiday

INSURANCE  Make sure you're covered for any accidents

While a travel insurance policy will cover you for any accidents or unforeseen circumstances that arise during your holiday, you will be required to declare any pre-existing medical conditions, which may affect your premium, as people with poor health are more likely to make a claim than those in good health, thus pushing up premiums. Although this will mean paying more initially, it will mean that you are covered, but any pre-existing medical conditions not declared on your policy are likely to not be covered in the event of a claim. There’s a range of local insurance companies and brokers offering travel insurance, including AIG, Jubilee Insurance and JW Seagon, so it’s worth shopping around to find the best policy and price before heading off on your holidays.

Veganism

Today’s menu is Is it possible to enjoy a vegan lifestyle in Kenya?

It’s a wonder anyone can enjoy a lifestyle free of meat and dairy products in Kenya, where our favourite dish is nyama choma and the fast food industry is booming. Yet veganism is on the rise here as well as globally. So 540 has been taking a look at why some people choose to live a life free of animal products.

V

eganism has been around for hundreds of years, but in the past decade its popularity as a lifestyle choice has reached an all-time high, with over a million people across the world opting for a vegan diet. This includes a gradually increasing number here in Kenya, although it’s hard to get official statistics on how many Kenyans are opting for a vegan lifestyle. In general terms, veganism refers to a diet and lifestyle that avoids the use or consumption of animal products such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy goods. This includes their use as an ingredient in another food product – for example, cakes or pasta. Many vegans also avoid household products or cosmetics that contain animal products, including tallow (animal fat), used in some soaps and toothpastes, lanolin (from sheep’s wool), found in cosmetics such as lip balm and moisturiser, and also beeswax in products such as furniture polish.

Vegetarians

FRUIT & VEG  A vegan diet is typically high in healthy foods

26

Africa’s low cost airline

Vegetarians, by contrast, still consume eggs and dairy products such as milk, cheese and butter, but avoid meat and fish. Some vegetarians, known as pescetarians, eat fish but not meat. Others, so-called lacto-vegetarians, eat

dairy products but avoid eggs, while ovo-vegetarians do it the other way round (eggs but not dairy). But why do people choose a vegan lifestyle? There are various reasons, but perhaps the most common is the belief that animals have a right to life and freedom without exploitation or suffering. Many vegans argue that animal farming is cruel and that as sentient beings – any living thing that has the ability to feel – animals should not be killed for food. Others believe that a vegan diet is better for their health because of its greater focus on fresh fruit and vegetables, beans and pulses. For some others, it’s the environmental impact of the meat industry, such as the land, resources and energy involved in farming, that convinces them to go vegan. Many vegans argue that a combination of all three of the above are valid reasons.

Controversy While leading a healthy lifestyle and helping the environment sounds like a ‘win win’ for everyone, there has been contro-

While leading a healthy lifestyle and helping the environment sounds like a ‘win win’ for everyone, there has been controversy over the vegan lifestyle versy over the vegan lifestyle, with concerns that, by cutting out whole food groups (meat, fish and dairy), vegans may not be getting enough nutrition. Although a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables can certainly bring benefits, it can be difficult to sustain a balanced diet, so if you’re considering a vegan lifestyle, it’s best to check whether you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need to be healthy, or ask the advice of a healthcare professional. Some argue that it’s impossible to live a completely vegan and crueltyfree lifestyle because animal

products are present in so many everyday products – for example, tallow in plastic bags.

Lifestyle Even if a meat-free life sounds like your worst nightmare, it’s a lifestyle choice for thousands of people all over the world and no doubt its popularity will continue to rise. If you’re looking to cut down on meat, or you’re ready to become a full-time vegan, there is plenty of online information to guide you on how to live a meat-free life.

VEGAN HOTSPOTS IN NAIROBI  Cooking vegan food at home is relatively easy. There are various online recipes to help you get started and many ingredients are available in Nakumatt, Uchumi and also from the market. Eating out may be trickier, but fear not, there are some establishments in Nairobi that serve great vegan food that will make even the meat-lovers jealous. Artcaffe: One of the few places in town with a dedicated vegan menu Zen Garden: Asian-style cuisine with a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian dishes Haandi: Serving some of Nairobi’s best meat- and dairy-free Indian dishes The Talisman: The ginger teriyaki tofu is popular with vegans and carnivores alike.

Q. When did you realise you had a talent for designing?

Q. Where do you get the inspiration for your designs?

A: Since I was very young – say, a pre-teen. I could draw, tailor and style my sister and friends just for fun from a young age.

A: I’m inspired by my day-to-day activities or how I’m feeling that season. I really can’t pinpoint one thing and say it’s where I draw my inspiration from.

Q. How did you break into fashion? A: I got recognition in the industry when I did my first collection. It was an overwhelming and happy feeling at the same time. A lot of people were liking and buying the pieces. The media coverage was also relatively good and I thank God for that. 30

Q. What’s the craziest design request you’ve received? A: Designing a stage outfit for a musician that was more or less like underwear – that was crazy for us.

Q. What type of dress do you most like to design?

Moringa

A superfood for a super you? Mineral-rich moringa has a lot to offer

T

aking care of your body is important – yet it’s something many of us neglect to do. Whether it’s skipping a gym session or helping yourself to more dessert, it may not be the end of the world – but wouldn’t it be nice to find other ways to keep your body ticking over nicely? Down in Msambweni, there’s a bright-green powder that may be able to help. Marketed as a superfood with a seemingly endless list of benefits, moringa powder is the latest name in health and well-being. Native to India and a popular ingredient across Asian cuisine,

MORINGA  The greener, the better!

32

Africa’s low cost airline

it’s made from the leaves of the moringa oleifera tree, also known as the drumstick tree, ground down into a powder that can be added to food and drinks or taken as a supplement. The fast-growing, drought-resistant tree is well suited to farming in Kenya and in Msambweni you’ll find ME Moringa EPZ Ltd, which uses up-to-the-minute technology to farm and process moringa. The company has been growing and manufacturing organic moringa products since 2012. All its products are certified organic, halal and kosher and the company is Rainforest Alliance certified for Europe, the United States and Japan. ME Moringa makes a wide range of products containing moringa powder including teas, capsules and a variety of food seasonings such as garam masala and ras-el-hanout, which are shipped worldwide. Closer to home, meanwhile, ME Moringa has helped to create over 140 jobs in the local community and is spreading the word about the benefits of this so-called superfood.

Moringa powder is naturally high in several key vitamins and minerals, each with its own health benefits

Nutrients Moringa powder contains a large number of vitamins, minerals and nutrients and can be added to food and drinks to offer a health boost. Bright green in colour, and with an earthy flavour similar to spinach, it can easily be incorporated into your diet to help you add some essential vitamins and minerals to your food. While moringa powder should not be used as a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, it can offer a range of benefits when used sensibly. Moringa powder is naturally high in several key vitamins and minerals, each with its own health benefits, including: Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, C, E and K, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc. Iron and Vitamin C are essential for maintaining a healthy

immune system, while Vitamin C alone can help form collagen, responsible for skin strength and elasticity. Moringa powder is especially rich in calcium – important for strong and healthy bones and teeth – and the presence of magnesium can help alleviate tiredness.

Both moringa powder and moringa oil, which is derived from the seeds, can benefit your skin, whether ingested (powder) or applied directly to the skin (oil). Just by adding a couple of teaspoons of moringa powder to your breakfast, or mixing into a smoothie, your skin and hair will also start to receive the benefits of the many vitamins and minerals in the powder. Moringa contains zinc, an essential vitamin for healthy hair, skin and nails, and is also packed with antioxidants – great for protecting and repairing cell damage.

Moisturiser Moringa oil is said to have excellent moisturising properties, making it a popular ingredient in hand creams, face creams and body moisturisers in addition to massage oils. It has been said to alleviate skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis, although little conclusive proof has been published confirming this. Due to the presence of many key nutrients in moringa powder, it has been suggested that it can be used to improve nutrition in areas where food provisions are lacking, or in drought-hit areas, as moringa trees can withstand such conditions. Some studies have also shown that moringa powder can be used as an effective soap for hand-washing, while the seed cake (a by-product of pressing moringa seeds to obtain oil) can be used to remove water impurities.

News Cafe

Read all about it! News Cafe is a front-page sensation

With three venues across Kenya – in Kilimani, Hardy and Sarit Centre – and others in eight more African countries, News Cafe pretty much excels in everything. No wonder it came so highly recommended during my recent stay in Nairobi.

B

reakfast? Check. Burgers? Check. Smoothies? Check. Cocktails? Check. Is there anything that South African restaurant chain News Cafe doesn’t have? Nestled next to the Uchumi supermarket in the Sarit Centre shopping mall, News Cafe covers a surprisingly large area that includes a popular outdoor terrace as well as an eye-catching, stylish and comfortable interior. Starting two decades ago in South Africa and famed for its wide menu and extensive cocktail list, News Cafe is now a staple of many cities across southern and eastern Africa, from Gaborone to Dar es Salaam. As I walked into News Cafe on a warm Saturday lunchtime, I was welcomed by two friendly waiters into a contemporary interior with a seemingly never-ending collection of spirits on display behind the bar.

I chose a table by the entrance and sat down to study the two large menus: one for food, hot drinks and smoothies and the other for cocktails and spirits. Much like a newspaper, the food menu is big on size and variety. The cocktail menu is full of old favourites and new concoctions, so it’s fun to decide on the tipple of your choice. After much deliberation, I went for the crumbed halloumi burger with chips and a Virgin Captain Colada to drink – it was only 1 pm after all. Finding good vegetarian food can be a struggle in a lot of places, but News Cafe has an impressive range of dishes to cater for veggies like myself, including breakfasts, salads, burgers and pasta. And, of course, for meat eaters there are steaks, ribs, wraps and more to satisfy your appetite. Both the food and drink were served in good time, with the

ATMOSPHERE  Great vibes all round

burger arriving on an oh-so-cool wooden board and the accompanying skinny fries in a small bucket-type holder. In all seriousness, the crumbed halloumi burger was one of the best I have ever tasted. Topped with guacamole and sweet chili sauce on a bed of lettuce and tomato, the panko-crumbed halloumi was divine and the skinny fries were the perfect complement to the mega burger. In addition, although it was a mocktail, the Captain Colada was excellent. However, if it had been later in the day, and I had no deadlines pending, I could easily have been persuaded to try one, or several, of News Cafe’s cocktails, which include the berry-based and cheekily named Slap and Tickle and the classic Long Island Iced Tea.

Laid-back As well as the superb food and drink, the atmosphere at News Cafe is a winner. In the daytime, the laid-back vibe is perfect for nursing a hangover or catching up on work, while in the evenings it comes alive with music, cocktails and the buzz of friendly conversation. Whatever the time of day, members of staff are always on hand to make sure you have a memorable time. And they will happily recommend dishes or drinks if, like me, you simply cannot decide.

DRIVE TIME

Range Rover Velar

Plenty of frills for your money

T

here was a time when a new Land Rover or Range Rover model was something of a rarity – a cause for celebration even. Perhaps once a decade we would be treated to a new model or, more likely, a mildly updated version of an existing model. In fact, some models didn’t seem to change at all. The doughty Land Rover Defender, launched in 1948 and discontinued only in late 2015, stayed pretty much true to the original throughout its 67-year production run. Times change, however, and since Range Rover was taken over by India’s Tata Motors, the model line-up has grown and grown. Every year, it seems, we have a new addition to the family. The latest in this incessant flurry of new Range Rovers is the Velar. At first glance it’s almost indistinguishable from other recent offerings; and the question being asked – especially by some Landy aficionados – is why there are so many models when they all look so similar? It’s a fair point.

Step into the cabin and immediately there is a very real sense of luxury – one matched by an overwhelming array of the latest in-car gadgetry. For a start, and confusingly, there are no fewer than three information screens (one has rotary dials) and it seems the new generation of Land Rover interiors will be following this layout. In the back, there is class-leading load space of around 675 litres with the rear seats upright and a whopping 1,690 litres with the rear seats folded; but, sadly, no fancy and

Sleek To my eyes, and with the possible exception of the Evoque, the Velar is the best-looking model so far, and certainly the sleekest and most car-like to drive. What’s more, it’s considerably less expensive than the Range Rover Sport – but, let’s be fair, this is no frill-less budget alternative.

helpful ‘gesture’ tailgate arrangement as found on, say, the Sport. In its source market, the Velar comes with a choice of three diesel engines starting with the 2.0 litre 178 bhp found in other Range Rover models and a trio of petrol versions, including a 3.0 litre supercharged V6 producing a beefy 375 bhp. A hybrid is said to be on the way in 2018. It remains to be seen whether all these variants will be available in East

Africa. RMA Motors in Nairobi expects to receive the first Velar in October. The Velar comes with an eight-speed auto box as standard and, being a Range Rover, there is permanent four-wheel drive. This contrasts with the AWD Jaguar F-Pace, with which the Velar shares a platform. There are five trim levels. But even the entry-level model comes with 18-inch alloys, heated front seats, keyless entry,

heated front screen and LED highlights. All six-cylinder versions get air suspension as standard. Topping the range is the R-Dynamic HSE P380 which has satin grey finish alloys, a sportier front bumper and one or two extra styling flourishes.

Loyal Range Rover still has a loyal following in East Africa and I’m sure the Velar will prove a hit; tempting would-be buyers away from the dull Range Rover Sport or even persuading those considering an Evoque to trade up. Better still, in my opinion, go for the Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport version and save yourself shedloads of money.

The 140-room hotel is located in Westlands, so it’s ideal for both business and leisure guests, with the central business district and Sarit Centre both just a fiveminute drive away. Each room is spacious, fresh and designed with the modern traveller in mind. Guests can enjoy an interactive entertainment system, free Wi-Fi, in-room dining and complimentary tea and coffee in addition to free access to the hotel’s gym. BOOKS THE POWER BY NAOMI

RIDING ON A TIGER BY MOODY AWORI

ALDERMAN

Moody Awori, or Uncle Moody as he is fondly known, presents his autobiography, ‘Riding on a Tiger’. From humble beginnings in a large family in the early half of the 20th century to living in a whites-only neighbourhood before his time and the tumultuous world of politics in which he spent several years, Moody Awori bares all in ‘Riding on a Tiger’ and offers an insight into a nation by someone who has seen it all.

All over the world, women wake up to discover they have a new power. The power to inflict terrible pain, even death, by conducting electricity like electric eels. ‘The Power’ focuses on the stories of four characters affected by the power: Margot, who works for the American government; Roxy, the daughter of a London gangster; Tunde, a Nigerian man who documents the worldwide change; and Allie, a teenage runaway.

MUSIC MORE LIFE

WITNESS

DRAKE

KATY PERRY

Canadian rapper Drake’s acclaimed playlist ‘More Life’ finally gets a physical release. It features a host of well-known and up-and-coming artists, from Kanye West to British rapper Giggs. Including the singles ‘Fake Love’ and ‘Passionfruit’, the playlist is billed as a ‘musical project’ from one of the world’s biggest male artists and features a massive 22 songs. From the Jennifer Lopez-sampling ‘Teenage Fever’ to grime-influenced ‘No Long Talk’, this film is arguably the singer’s most interesting and varied release to date.

Breaking away from a more mainstream sound into ‘purposeful pop’, Katy Perry’s fourth album takes influence from EDM, disco and electronic-pop to make political statements (‘Chained to the Rhythm’), throw shade at rivals (‘Swish Swish ft. Nicki Minaj’) and reminisce about old lovers (‘Miss You More’). With the addition of vocals by Skip Marley and Migos and writing credits from Sia and British singer Jack Garratt, ‘Witness’ is a new direction for Katy Perry, but one not all fans will be happy about.
