KU SOO DHAWOW DUULIMAADKAN

WELCOME ON BOARD

W

elcome on board Jubba Airways and welcome to the second edition of our biannual in-flight magazine, ‘Cirka’. Jubba Airways was launched in 1998 by a group of entrepreneurs keen to establish a reliable and competitive airline based in East Africa – and it has come a long way since. It’s amazing when we look back to our inaugural flight on 28 May 1998 – just a month after the airline was formed. Since then, Jubba Airways has gone from strength to strength and has grown into one of Africa’s largest privately owned airlines.

Partnership From our base in Nairobi and in partnership with a selection of other carriers, Jubba Airways now has links to major airports around the world. At the same time, we operate scheduled and charter flights to a range of international airports with a particular focus on destinations in East Africa. East Africa’s aviation sector has seen a growing demand for new routes and additional

capacity as countries across the region rebuild their infrastructure and their economies. We have been well placed to take advantage of this increased demand. Inspired by a sense of national reawakening and close regional co-operation, more and more East Africans – especially those in Somalia – are actively promoting change

Jubba Airways has grown into one of Africa’s largest privately owned airlines and connecting people and centres of commerce within this part of the continent. In fact, Jubba Airways was born out of an eagerness to redefine East Africa as a destination. True to its founding objectives, Jubba Airways is making it easier for East Africans to step out and meet the world and to bring home the world to the region. Jubba Airways has drawn up a strategic expansion plan

In this issue POSITIVE SIGNS OF HAPPIER TIMES AHEAD Welcome to the second issue of Cirka – Jubba Airways’ in-flight magazine. Much of the world has yet to realise that Somalia is a nation on the rise. But Somalis know, even if others don’t. The economy is growing fast and many Somalis from the diaspora are moving back – or at the very least investing their hard-earned cash in the homeland. It’s against this background of good news that we publish the second issue of Cirka, in which we shine the spotlight on Somalia’s increasingly positive outlook. First to our cover story, where we profile the brilliant Sahro Hassan, a Somali fashion designer making a big name for herself in the United States. We look at the revival now taking place in the nation’s once thriving banana sector and the excellent work being undertaken by the trade association Sobana. Staying with agriculture, Cirka features the exotic production of both frankincense and myrrh. Slightly tongue in cheek, we imagine a situation where Africa has to assist poverty-stricken Europeans with aid transfers. We also visit Djibouti, stay at the Flora Grand in Dubai, eat out at the Hiddo-Dhowr in Hargeisa and drive the latest workhorse Toyota Probox. And be sure to read our regular technology feature, which looks at the growing popularity of small, civilian drones.

Tirsigan MUSTAQBAL NARUURO LEH AYAA SOO MUUQDA Ku soo dhowaada caddadkii labaad ee Cirka – Wargeys aay soo saarto diyaarada Jubba Airways. In badan oo adduunka ka mid ahi waxa aanay xaqiiqsan in Soomaaliya dib u soo kabanayso, laakiin ugu yaraan Somalidu taas waa ogtahay, xataa hadii aanay cid kale ka war qabin. Dhaqaalihii kor ayuu u socdaa, dad badan oo ka soo noqday qurbaha ayaana wadankii dib u soo degaaya - ama ugu yaraan, waxa ay hantidooda ay ku soo dhidideen ku maal galinayaan wadanka. Warkaas naruurada leh dartii, ayaay tahay in aan daabacno caddadkii labaad ee wargeyska Cirka, kaas oo soo bandhigi doona wararka lagu farxo ee sii kordhayaa ee ka imanaya Soomaaliya. Bogga hore waxaan ku soo qaadanaynaa Sahro Xasan oo ah gabadh hal-abuurta qaab-tolmeedka dharka, wadanka Maraykanka na magac wayn ku leh. Waxa kale oo aan eegaynaa soo kabashada dhinaca wax soo saarka muuska, oo ahaa wakhtiyada qaarkood mid heer sare maraaya, iyo shaqada aad ka u fiican ee ay haatan wadaan ururka ganacsatada muuska ee Sobana. Inaga oo qaybtaa wax soo sarka beeraha wali ku jirna, waxa kale oo aan si xiiso leh u soo bandhigaynaa wax soo saarka beeyadda iyo malmalka.

Geesta kale, in kasta oo ay mala awaal uun tahay, haddana bal malee qaarada Yurub oo ay saboolnimo darani wiiqday, Afrika na ay kaalmo u fidinayso. Waxa kale oo aan booqan doonaa wadanka Jabuuti, hudheelka Flora Grand ee Dubai, hudheelka Hiddo-dhowr ee Hargeysa, waxa aanan kaxayn doonaa baabuurka aan marnaba joogsanin ee Toyota Probox noociisa u dambeeyay. Sidoo kale, ha u daymo-la’aanin qaybta wargeyskan ee ka hadasha sancooyinka sayniska ee casriga ah, waxa aanan eegi doonaa diyaaradaha bilaa-duuliyaha ah oo adeegsigooda dhinaca sibilka ahi soo kordhaayo. Waxan rajaynaynaa in aad si wacan uga bogan doonto wargeyskan Cirka, isla markaana aad ku raaxaysato duulimaadkan Jubba Airways.

SOMALIA’S CASH CROP ENJOYS A REVIVAL

T

he popular fruit, eaten and enjoyed the world over, is undergoing a much anticipated revival in Somalia, a place where it once flourished, until civil war left the crop less than fruitful. Now, a group of farmers is planning to take Somalia’s banana industry back to the top of the tree.

BEERALAYDA MUUSKAEE SOOMAALIYA

Dating back almost 100 years, banana farming was introduced to the Shabelle and Juba river basins by Italian colonists in the 1920s and proved a hugely successful source of income for Somalia. As well as becoming part of a staple diet for the population, often served with rice, the bananas were exported worldwide. In 1990 this export was worth an impressive US$96 million. Then disaster struck. In 1991 civil war broke out in Somalia and devastated the country. With the collapse of the government, Somalia went from banana field to battleground, with warlords and extremists vying for control of the land. Not only did the cultivation and export of bananas

become nearly impossible for established Somali farmers, but the warlords were fighting for control of the fruit as a source of hard currency. What was once a promising industry for Somalia became fuel for the fire of civil war.

Consumed by millions, painted by Andy Warhol, grown by Somali farmers It wasn’t until the security situation began to improve in Somalia in recent years that light appeared at the end of the tunnel. Now, an enthusiastic bunch, the Somali Banana Farmers Association - known as SOBANA - is aiming to revive this popular, profitable crop and start changing lives again for the better. The group, made up of local farmers, is fighting back against the previous struggles and are more determined than ever to get Somalia back in the banana growing business. Not only does Somalia have good, fertile land for banana plantations, but it also has decent transport links for exporting the produce to the Middle East. The bananas grown in Somalia are said to be some of the best tasting in the world, highlighting the potential for future success at a time of global demand for the fruit. Henna is an important part of the wedding process in Somalia as well as on other occasions such as Eid al-Fitr and Ramadan By Kirsten Alexander

BRIDALHENNA

Perfect pattern for a happy marriage

S

omali weddings are a lavish affair, renowned for being among the most expensive in the world. There is a lot to be done in preparation for the big day. There are the usual tasks, such as choosing what to wear, sending out invitations and organising the entertainment. But there’s another key item on the list when you’re planning the big day in Somalia: henna. Although not exclusive to Somali weddings – bridal henna is commonplace in India and Pakistan among others – henna is an important part of the wedding process in Somalia as well as on other occasions such as Eid al-Fitr and Ramadan when you will often find ladies adorned with intricate and fascinating henna designs on their arms, hands and feet. The dye, which comes from the henna plant, has been used for centuries to colour anything

from fabrics to hair to fingernails and is extremely popular in parts of Africa and the Middle East as a form of body art decoration. The market for henna is now expanding into Europe and North America accompanied by a growing interest in henna hair dye as an alternative to more damaging chemical procedures. In addition to hair colourants, henna designs have been seen to adorn American singers such as Madonna and Beyoncé, thus underlining the popularity of henna outside of cultural and religious events.

darken over time. The longevity of henna designs varies depending on which part of the body the henna is applied to, how long the dye is left to dry and the strength of the henna itself. In Somalia, the designs typically feature flowers and triangular shapes and are similar to those found in the Arabian peninsula.

How it works The leaves from the henna plant are usually picked, crushed and mashed with liquid to form a paste. The paste assists the application process. The unbroken leaves have no staining effect on skin, so the stain needs to be released through crushing. Henna designs tend to be very delicate and detailed. Different cultures use different methods of application to suit their own requirements and designs. It need not be a complex process, however; a traditional stick or twig is commonly used, alongside other methods such as a syringe or cone. Once the paste has been made, it is applied to the skin – usually on the hands, feet and neck – and left to dry. The paste is then removed to reveal orange stains on the skin that gradually

During this event, the brideto-be and her bridal party have intricate patterns painted on their skin, with the bride receiving the most elaborate and intricate designs. Not only are the designs highly attractive, but they also have a meaning; it is believed than henna can bring good luck and joy to the bride and her future husband.

India: Also known as mehndi, henna is part of wedding traditions here. It is believed that the longer the henna stays on your hand, the longer your in-laws will treat you well. Bangladesh: Similar to in India, but light-green henna is commonly used as an alternative. Palestine: A lot of design variation – for example, securing a real flower in the centre of a bride’s hand along with the henna design. It is not uncommon for men to henna their hands, too. Morocco: There are usually two days of celebrations called ‘little henna’ and ‘big henna’. Both the bride and groom have henna parties, with the henna said to act as a protection from hostile spirits or attacks. Egypt: During a henna party, the bride holds a lump of henna in her hand and each guest puts a coin into the lump until it is covered. The bride then scrapes the henna off and more is

Bulgaria: During a week of celebrations, henna is used by Bulgarian gypsies to ritually cleanse the bride before her marriage as a symbol of the consummation of the marriage.

What they signify Henna designs can be very detailed and intricate and much thought goes into choosing the designs based on their meanings. Here are some of the most common designs and what they are believed to symbolise:

munaasibadaha Ciidaha, markaas oo aad arkayso haween aad u badan oo si qurux badan xinnaha ugu xardhay gacmaha iyo cagahaba. Xinnaha waxa la adeeg sanayay qarniyo badan iyada oo loo isticmaalo in lagu midabeeyo waxyaabo kala duwan oo aay ka midyihiin timahaiyo ciddiyuhu, waxuuna caan aad uga yahay Afrika iyo Asiya oo aad loogu qurxiyo jidhka.Dalabka xinnuhu aad ayuu u sii kordhayaa oo waxa uu suuq ka helay Yurub iyo Waqooyiga Ameerika iyada oo dadku soo nacayaan waxyaabaha laga sameeyo kiimikada oo laga yaabo in aanay caafimaadka u fiicnayn. In timaha la la mariyo waxa dheer, xinnaha

oo siyaabo kala duwan la isugu nashqadaynayo oo waxa aad u jecel baa heesaa ama fanaaniin badan oo Maraykan ah oo aay ka mid yihiin Madona iyo Beyoncé.Tani waxa aay muujinaysa sida isticmaalku xinuhu u sii kordhayo oo u gaadhayo meelo aan hore looga isticmaali jirin.

jidhkaaga hore uga go’i waayo in macnaheedu yahay in reerka xididka u noqonaya gabadhu uu si fiican ula dhaqmi doono.

Intaas kadib, waa la iska xoqaa isaga oo jidhka kaga taga midab sida liinta oo kale ah ama mid madow ah muddo kadib.Wakhtiga uu jidhka qofka ka sii muuqanayo ama ku oolayo waxa uu ku xidhanyahay meesha la mariyo, wakhtiga loo daayo jidhka si uu u qalalo iyo sida marka hore loo sameeyo ama loogu badiyo caleenta xinnaha. Wadanka Soomaaliya, xinnaha waxa loo nashqadeeyaa sida ubaxa ama se muuqaal saddex xagal ah oo u eeg sida ay u marsadaan dadka Carbeed.

Falastiin: Siyaabo kala duwan ayaa loo nashqadeeyaa - tusaale ahaan, waxa gacanta loo geliyaa aroosada ubax iyada oo xinnahana si wacan loogu nashqadeeyay.Waxa iyaduna dhacda in raga laftoodu marsadaan gacmaha.

Xafladda Sida lagu yaqaan wadamo badan oo xinnaha laga isticmaalo, waxa dhaqanka Soomaalida ka mid ah in aroosadu qabsato xaflad meher oo ka horaysa arooska.Xafladdan waxa aroosada iyo hablaha milxiisadaha u ahi dhamaantood marsanyihiin xinne si wacan loogu sharxay jidhkooda iyada oo aroosada si gaar ah loogu nashqadeeyo.Nashqadayntani kuma soo jiidanayso oo kaliya, balse waxa aay xambaarsanytahay macne balaadhan; oo waxaaba la rumaysanyahay in xinnahu qoyska cusub u horseedayo farxad iyo nasiib wanaagsan. Aaynu eegno dunida kale Hindiya: Xinnuhu waa qeyb ka mid ah aroos dhaqameedka.Waxaa xitaa la aaminsanyahay haddii xinnuhu

Bangaladesh: Si la mid ah Hindiya ayaa loo isticmaalaa, inkasta oo cagaar ah khafiif la marsado.

Marooko: Waxa inta badan la dabaal degaa laba maalmood oo loo kala yaqaano maalintii “xinnaha yar” iyo maalintii “xinnaha weyn.Arooska iyo aroosaduba waxa aay qabsadaan xaflado la xinnaysanyahay oo looga jeedo in uu gaashaan uga noqdo belaayadda. Masar: Inta lagu jira xaflada xinnaha, aroosada gacanteeda ayaa loo mariyaa iyada oo qof walba oo martida ah na uu ugu ridiyo qaadaadiic ama shilimaan ilaa uu qarsoomo xinnuhu.Intaas ka dib ayaa aroosadu iska jaftaa xinaha oo haddana in kale dib u marsataa si uu ugu qalalo habeenimada. Bulgaria: Inta lagu jiro toddobaadka dabaaldega, xinnaha waxa isticmaala dadka Jibsiga ee ku nool Bulgaria, iyaga oo aaminsan in tani ka dhaafayso dembigii hore aroosada intii aan la guursan.

WAXA UU XINNUHU KA TURJUMAYO Sida loo nashqadeeyo xinnuhu waa kala xeel dheertahay oo aay kala sahlan tahay, iyada oo sida ama habka uu rabo qofku ay bixinayso macnayaal kala duwan. Halkan hoose waxa aan ku soo koobaynaa nashqadaha kala duwan iyo waxa dadku ka aaminsanyihiin. Ubax: waa astaan farxaddeed iyada oo inta badhtamaha ama xudunta ubuxu u taagan tahay horumar iyo bilow cusub oo soo bidhaamaya.Waxa inta badan ay caan ka tahay xaflada meherka ee aroosadu samaysato. Shimbir: waxa ay gudbinaysaa jacayl, guul iyo qurux. Baal shimbireedka: Waxa lala xidhiidhiyaa isagana nasiibka wacan iyo taranka dhinaca ubadka oo muhiim u ah qoyska cusub.

Like many girls all over the world, Sahro Hassan loves clothes. In contrast with most other girls, however, Sahro was born in a Kenyan refugee camp after her parents fled Somalia at a time of political unrest. Fast forward to today, and Sahro is one of the most influential young designers in the Muslim community in the USA and her future looks bright and colourful – just like her designs. jubbaairways.com

ombining fashion and faith is not an easy feat for many – unless you are Sahro Hassan. The 19-year-old fashion designer has reimagined traditional clothing for the young Muslim women of today and is taking the world by storm, one sequin at a time. Life in the refugee camp was very different for Sahro, but she believes the experience of those difficult times has helped her succeed today. “In the village I was quick and creative and I stood for my beliefs,” she says. “The older folks used to call me a smart mouth, as expressing an opinion was considered a bad thing for a young girl to do.”

Emotional After living in the village for the first few years of her life, Sahro’s family had the opportunity to move to the United States. It was an emotional time for all of them. On the one hand, it brought hope and the chance of a better life; but on the other, Sahro’s elder brother had to stay behind in Kenya. “I remember running to my big brother’s soccer game barefoot, telling him we were going to the United States,” she says. “I was so happy and hopeful, but then the day we left I had a tantrum because he wasn’t going to come with us.” Things didn’t immediately get easier for Sahro and her family, however, as their first touchdown in America was in Indianapolis, where the Muslim community is quite small. “I felt very anxious in school and I could hardly communicate with my teachers and classmates,” she says. “The only way I found a connection was

to dress like the other students around me.” But the mainstream high school fashions were not necessarily suited to Sahro, who felt she was never going to fit in, especially when a misunderstanding led to her being asked to remove her hijab to ‘comply’ with school rules. Then her father heard about a promising Muslim community in Lewiston, Maine, and the family moved. It was here that the seed for her clothing range Fashionuji was sown. “I went shopping with my

parents for a dress to wear for my eighth grade promotion,” says Sahro. “I remember trying on so many things, which were all too small, too revealing or just not my style. At one point I was in the dressing room, crying because there was nothing available for young Muslim girls like myself.” Even in a country as large and diverse as the United States, there were few options for fashion-conscious young Muslim women, and this inspired Sahro to start her clothing range,

Sida hablo badan oo Soomaaliyeed oo adduunka kala jooga, Sahro Xasan waxa ay jeceshahay dharka. Balse waxa jira oo kale wax ay kaga duwan tahay in badan.Waxa ay ku dhalatay xero qaxoonti oo ku taala Kenya kadib markii waalidkeed ka soo qaxeen dagaaladii sokeeye ee Soomaaliya oo markaa socday. Iyada oo horumar deg deg ah samaynaysa, ayaa Sahro maanta waxa ay ka mid tahay dadka sida casriga ah u farsameeya dharka ee aad caanka uga ah bulshada Muslimiinta ee ku nool wadanka Maraykanka, iyada oo mustaqbalkeeduna yahay mid fiican oo sida dharka aay samayso oo kale u soo iftiimaya. In aad hesho dhar diintaada ka turjumaya oo wakhtigana la socda ma aha wax aad ugu sahlan dad badan - haddii aanad Sahro oo kale ahayn.Inantan oo ah 19 jir waxa aay dib u habayn ku samaysay dharkii dhaqanka u ahaa dumarka si uu ula jaanqaado waxa aay jecelyihiin dumarka Muslimiinta ee imika joogaa iyada oo uu dharkaasi noqday mid aad looga isticmaalo meelo badan. Noloshii xerada qaxoontigu waxa aay mid aad ugu adag Sahro, balse waxa aay rumaysantahay in waayo aragnimadii wakhtiga adag aay caawisay si ay u guulaysato. “Markii aan joogay xerada waxa aan ahaa qof fikrado cusub la yimaada oo aad u dhakhso badan oo waxa aan mar walba ku adkaysan jiray waxa aan aaminsanahay”, ayay tidhi. “Dadka iga waaweyni waxa ay inta badan igu odhan jireen waad dhiirantahay, taas oo inta badan loo arko wax aan u fiicnayn hablahu marka ay da’ yar yihiin”.

Waxyaabaha dareenkaaga taabanaya Kadib markii aay xerada ku noolayd dhowrkii sano ee nolosheeda ugu horeeyay, ayaa Sahro iyo qoyskeedu waxa ay fursad u heleen in ay u soo guuraan wadanka Maraykanka. Waxa ay ahayd wax dhamaantood qalbigooda taabtay.Marka dhinac laga eego, waxa u bilaabantay rajo

iyo nolol fiican;balse dhinaca kale, Sahro walaalkeed oo ka weyn ayaa ku hadhay Kenya. "Waxa aan xasuustaa aniga oo ku ordaya garoonkii uu kubadda uu ku ciyaarayay walaalkay aniga oo kabo la’, oo ugu bishaaraynaya inaan tegi doono Maraykanka”, ayay tidhi. “Aad ayaan u faraxsanaa oo rajo weyn ayaan qabay, laakiin maalintii aan soo safraynay aad ayaan u niyad jabsanaa waayo isagu nalama uu socon”. Noloshu markiiba uma ay noqon mid sahlan Sahro iyo reerkooda toona waayo waxa aay ku soo degeen gobolka Indianapolis oo ay ku yaraayeen bulshada Muslimiinta ahi. “Markii aan Iskuulka galay aad ayaan u naxay oo ardayda iyo macalimiinta toona lama aanan hadli karin”, ayay tidhi. “Sida kali ah ee aan xidhiidh kula samayn karayay ama kula qabsan karayay ardayda kale waxa ay ahayd inaan u labisto sidooda oo kale”. Laakiin dharka ay ardayda dugsiyada sare xidhnaayeen waxa ay ahaayeen qaar aan Sahro la habooneen oo waxa ay la ahayd in aanay weligeed la qabsin karin. Waxaa mar ku dhacday in aay is fahmi waayeen dugsiga iyada mar xitaa laga dalbaday in ay iska saarto Xijaabkii ay xidhnayd si ay ugu ‘hogaansanto’ shuruucda iskuulka. Intaas kadib, waxa dhacday in aabaheed uu maqlay in ay jirto bulsho Muslimiin ah oo degan Lewiston oo ku taala Maine, halkaas ayay u guureen.Halkaas ayay kasoo unkantay fikradda shirkadan Fashhionuji. "Waxaan raacay waalidkay si ay iigu soo iibiyaan dhar aan u xidho xafladdii iskuulka ee aan ugu gudbayay fasalka 8-aad”, ayay tidhi Sahro. "Waxaan xasuustaa aniga oo marba isku eegaya dharka oo kolba ay aad iiga yar yaraanayaan, qaarkoodna jidhkayga ay aad u ugu dhigsanyihiin, halka qaarkoodna aanan kaba helin sida ay u samaysanyihiin.Waxa dhacday mar aniga oo ku jira qolka lagu labisto

Her dream became reality with the awarding of a grant to start her own business personality or offer the styles she and her friends yearned to wear, and so Fashionuji was born. Sahro began to design and make her own clothes, using her friends and family as models for her collections. Her designs soon began to attract much-deserved attention and she was accepted into the Young Entrepreneurs Academy. Her dream became a reality with the awarding of a grant to start her own business. The relationship between fashion and faith is important to Sahro, who aims to bring culture and ethnicity into international fashion through her designs. But she had to convince her parents first.

Determined “When I first told my mother, her reaction was, ‘Why not become a doctor or teacher?’ She didn’t really understand what fashion was, and thought that I was just

going through a phase.” But the teenager powered on, determined to make a change, not just for herself but for the countless other young Muslim women who strive to be covered and comfortable without compromising on style. Her designs include everything from funky floral skirts to bold floor-length dresses and from sequins to cheetah prints.

Inspiring Not yet 20 years old, Sahro has achieved a great deal and has inspired a new generation of young Muslim women to embrace fashion in an accessible way. And she shows no sign of slowing down. “I believe in creating your own destiny,” she says. “It doesn’t matter where you grew up or how many mountains you have climbed as long as you have the courage to keep going. I believe in using the past as an inspiration, not an excuse.” And the inspiration is coming thick and fast. Her goal is to get her clothing range in department stores across the US and, hopefully, the rest of the world. With so much accomplished at such a young age, what has been her proudest moment so far? “Meeting some young fans at Bedford, Massachusetts, who had learned about me in the ‘Boston Globe’. I had so much in common with them. Many had to leave their native countries and adapt to a new place. I felt so good being able to connect with people in such a positive way.” But who inspires the inspiring? “Lanre Da Silva Ajayi is my biggest fashion inspiration because her work is gorgeous. Also my own father, because he is a warrior. He never told me not to pursue my dream because I am a woman.”

consisting of fun, colourful yet conservative clothing for Muslim girls so they needn’t feel excluded from their peers. “I love being modern and creative, but the clothing stores in the US do not carry Muslim clothing lines or even clothes suitable for us to wear,” she says. “I don’t want a young Muslim girl to go shopping with her non-Muslim friends and feel left out.” While there was clothing available to Sahro and her peers, it didn’t appeal to her vibrant

Taas ayaa ku dhiirigelisay Sahro in ay bilowdo tolida dhar kala duwan oo midabyo badan leh oo ku haboon dhaqanka Muslimiinta si aanay u dareemin in ay ka soocan yihiin hablaha dhigooda ah. “Waan jecelahay inaan mar walba noqdo qof wakhtiga la socda oo hal-abuur leh, laakiin dharka lagu hayo tukaamada Maraykanu ma aha qaar nagu haboon inaan xidhano,” ayay tidhi. “Ma rabo in gabadh yar oo Muslim ahi inta ay raacdo saaxiibadeeda aan Muslimka ahayn, kadibna ay waaydo wax ay iibsato oo ay kadib na isu aragto in cidla lagaga tegay oo go’doon tahay”. Inkasta oo Sahro iyo da’deeduba heli karayeen dhar, haddana kama ay helin habka ay u tolan yihiin iyada iyo saaxiibadeed, sidaas ayay iyada ugu dhalatay fikradani. Sahro waxa ay ku bilowday in ay dharkeeda tolato iyada oo saaxiibadeed iyo qoyskeedu noqdeen kuwii ugu horeeyay ee ay ku tijaabiso.Intaas kadb ayaa nashqadeeda iyo sida aay wax u toshaa noqdeen qaar soo jiita ddadka iyada oo lagu casuumay in ay ku biirto naadiga dhalinyarada hal-abuurka leh ee loo yaqaan “Young Entrepreneurs Academy”. Riyadeedii ayaa run u noqotay markii ay ku guulaysatay lacag abaalmarin ah oo ay ku bilowdo ganacsigeeda. In ay soo saarto dhar wakhtiga la socda oo casri ah balse ka turjumaya diinta qofka waa u muhiim Sahro oo waxa ay rabtaa in dhaqankii iyo meesha ay ka soo jeedo soo gaadhsiiso heer ay la jaanqaadaan labiska u tolan sida casriga.Waxa se muhiim ahayd iyaduna in ay ku qanciso waalidkeed. “Markii aan u sheegay hooyaday, waxaa uu dareenku ahaa, ‘Maxaad u noqon waayday dhakhtar ama macalin?’ Runtii ma ay fahmin waxa uu faashinku ama tolida dharkan casriga ahi tahay oo waxa ay moodaysay in ay tahay uun marxalad dhalinyaronimo oo aan marayo”.Laakiin gabadhan dhalinyarada ahi waa ay sii dhiiratay oo waxa ka go’nayd in ay is badal samayso, kaas oo faa’idadiisu aanay ku koobnayn iyada balse dhamaan

dhalinyarada Muslimiinta ah ee rabta in ay si fiican isugu asturaan dhar utolan hab casri oo la jaanqaadaya dunida kale.Dharka ay farsamayso waxa ka mid ah dharka loo yaqaano haafafka oo debecsan ilaa iyo toobabka dhaadheer ee aroosyada iyo weliba kuwo leh nashqado dhalaalaya iyo kuwo kale oo shagaaran oo leh muuqaalka harimacadka. Inkasta oo ay ka yartahay 20 jir, haddana Sahra waxa ay gaadhay wax badan oo waxa ay yididiilo iyo rajo gelisay fac cusub oo hablo dhalinyaro Muslimiin ah oo raba in ay helaan faashin ama wax casri ah balse qaabka ay doonaayaan ah u tolan.Ilaa imika waxa ay ku wadaa dardar oo ma jiraan wax hakinaya Sahro. “Waxa aan rumaysanahay in qofku uu jeexan karo yoolkiisa ama halka uu ku socdo,” ayay tidhi. “Muhiim maaha meesha aad ku soo kortay ama waxa aad soo martay kol haddii aad weli leedahay adkaysi aad ku sii wadid.Waxa aan rumaysanahay in wixii ku soo maray ay kuu noqdaan wax ku sii dhiirigeliya, balse aanay noqon wax aad ka dhigato marmarsiiyo.” Waxyaabaha Sahro sii dhiirigelinayaa waa sii badanayaan. Hadafkeedu waa in dharka ay toshaa noqdaan qaar lagu iibiyo dukaamo gaar u noqda oo laga furo Maraykanka iyo, sidaan rajaynayno, adduunka intiisa kaleba.Mar haddii ay intaas oo guul ah soo gaadhay iyada oo aad u da’yar, goorma ayay ahayd markii aay ugu farxada badnayd ama nafteeda ugu hanweynayd? “Waxa aay ahayd markii aan kulan la qaatay dhalinyaro joogtay Bedford oo ku taala Massachusetts oo aniga taageerayay, kuwas oo warkayga ka akhristay wargeyska ‘Boston Globe’.Wax badan ayaan isku mid ka ahayn.Qaar badan oo iyaga ka mid ahi waxa ay ka soo guureen wadamadii ay ka soo jeedeen oo waxa khasab ku noqotay in ay la qabsadaan dhul ku cusub.Farxad badan ayaan dareemay markii aan is waraysanay ee sheekaddu isugu kaaya baxday.”Sahro, oo iyada la higsado, yay iyaduna ku dayataa am higsataa? “Lanre Da Silva Ajayi ayaa aniga ii ah qofka ugu weyn ee aan aad ka ugaga daydo dhinaca faashinka ama qaab-tolmeedka casriga ah waayo dharka aay samayso waa qaar aad u bilicsan. Sidoo kale aabahay ayaan aad ugu daydaa waayo waa geesi.Weligii ima odhan ka hadh hamigaaga ama riyadaada waayo waxaad tahay gabadh.”

Prayer Stay overnight in any Somaliland town and you will hear the call to prayer by the Imam – a call that cannot be missed as mosques are fitted with loudspeakers. It comes at four in the morning and again at five as the people of Somaliland are called to do the Fajr or predawn prayer. Somaliland is an Islamic country

and religion plays an important role in society and life there. The people of Somaliland subsist mainly on farming and the trade in camels and goats. Every day thousands of goats and camels are bought and sold in Hargeisa. The sale of animals still follows the age-old practice in which the seller and buyer give each other a surreptitious handshake under the cover of their coats and the

he visitor’s first impression of Somaliland is generally one of heat and dry landscapes. Shrubs and trees grow among the rocky landscape, but not much else. But then comes a thunderstorm and the self-same landscape becomes a river, a surface of water, only to dry up and become dusty and parched once more. The people are not like the landscape, however. The women wear colourful hijabs and burkas. Often shy – because so few foreigners venture outside the capital, Hargeisa – they are also friendly and curious. The streets are lively, with all kinds of commodities

amount of fingers and finger knuckles used will signify the amount. If the buyer withdraws his hand, the deal is not to his liking; but if he shakes on it, the sale goes through. Another key source of income for many rural families is the collecting of myrrh and frankincense, the resinous gums of the Commiphora and Boswellia species. The trees grow in remote areas of Somaliland, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and across the Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula. “Some 500 tonnes of myrrh and frankincense are exported annually from Somaliland,” says Guelle Osman Guelle of Neo Botanika, the largest exporter of gums in Somaliland. In response to growing demand he is expanding his operation. It is the first business to offer certified

Trees are usually owned by certain families or tribes…no one interferes with the trees of another owner organic product. A distillation unit for extracting the oil is under construction and this will lead to a significant local value addition. The myrrh and frankincense trees are usually owned by certain families or tribes, who have the right to harvest their produce each year. No one interferes with the trees of another owner. Myrrh harvesting occurs twice a year when the trees begin to shed their leaves. The harvesters cut a circular hole in the tree with a specially shaped

tool called a mingaf and leave it for 10 to 15 days, waiting for the resin to harden. This is then collected and dried. The process is repeated several times in one season, the hole getting bigger each time. In a good year, a tree may yield 300 to 500 grams. Harvesting myrrh is no easy task. Many hours go into this undertaking, and the trees are often located in remote areas accessible only on foot. The dried resin is delivered to a central warehouse where it is separated from bits of bark or stones by women. Frankincense is also graded into differently coloured pieces, the price being determined by the colour and purity. Once this has been done, it is packaged and exported from the port of Berbera. Myrrh, having been used since ancient times for

embalming, has many benefits. It is burned as incense in religious ceremonies, added to cosmetics as perfume and also used more and more nowadays in medicine. It may also be chewed for oral hygiene.

Religious Frankincense trees are abundant in the coastal areas of Somaliland. They are harvested only in the summer months of June to August. The gum resin is prepared in much the same way as myrrh. Frankincense is used for religious purposes. Life in Somaliland is emerging from the dark past of the civil war. Despite the harshness of the natural environment and the shadows of the past, the people of Somaliland are striving forward to a better future – and this is most uplifting to witness. 

Marka kuugu horaysa Somaliland ee aad booqato waxa markaba maskaxdaada ku soo dhacaya kulaylka hawada iyo muuqaaalka dhulka ee qalalan.Waxa kale oo aad arkaysaa dhir ka dhex baxday dhulka dhagaxaanta u badan, laakiin wax kale ma arkaysid.Isla dhulkaas haddana marka uu roobku helo waxa aad arkaysaa isaga oo biyo ka buuxaan sida webiyada oo biyuhu ay banaanka wadhanyihiin, inkasta oo ay gudhayaan oo dhulku sidiisii ku soo noqonayo. SPARE A THOUGHT FOR THE POOR PEOPLE OF EUROPE By Gary Gimson

cirka magazine

Is Europe the world’s poor man now?

I

originally posed this question partly tongue in cheek, but now I’m not so sure. How long will it be before Africans and African governments start sending aid money to Europe instead of the other way round? When are we going to see the concerts, the earnest African celebrities pleading for us to donate our hard-earned (Somali, Ugandan, Kenyan or Tanzanian) shillings, and the wearing of sympathetic lapel ribbons and ‘right on’ coloured wristbands as a continent expresses its collective concern for those seemingly less fortunate folk living far to the north? Africans seem to have had enough of do-gooding and patronising Western celebrities raising funds on their behalf when they are, for the most part, quite capable of resolving their own problems without interference from beyond the continent – as Somalia can clearly attest. What’s more, the days when Africa was deemed to be poor and Europe perceived to be wealthy are now long past – even if left-of-centre politicians and so-called rock stars still persist in seeing it that way. This new topsy-turvy economic picture on both continents is creating some odd situations. Botswana, for

example, already has its own state-backed aid programme – although, as yet, this is not targeted at Europe’s needy. Paradoxically, as the economies of Europe continue to flatline, many European Union states remain committed to handing out 0.7 per cent of their GDP in aid each year. So while Africa is powering ahead economically, the continent stills receives barrowloads of cash from those having to borrow that 0.7 per cent of GDP just to give it away.

Change Clearly, times have changed. Africa, once an economic basket case, a continent seemingly racked by famine and civil wars – or so Europeans thought – is on the rise, Somalia included. By contrast, once-affluent Europe is now in what appears to be an inexorable death spiral as it grapples with a one-size-fits-all single currency that has brought near economic collapse to several states and the EU’s share of world trade continues to fall year on year. The figures are stark. Take a look at the latest GDP growth rates as provided by the CIA

25

AID IN REVERSE Yearbook. These show that, in 2013, eight of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies were African: South Sudan* (1), Sierra Leone** (2), Liberia** (11), Côte d’Ivoire (12), Ghana (13), Rwanda (14), Mozambique (19) and Eritrea (20). Based on estimated figures, Somalia ranked 127. It’s worth noting that, owing to several negative factors, this list may look significantly different when 2014’s rankings are published. Eritrea, albeit in 20th place, still posted an annual growth rate of seven per cent – a figure that all EU states could only dream about.

Future This shift in economic performance is best illustrated by the thousands of Portuguese who have already migrated to Angola and Mozambique to escape the worst of Portugal’s economic woes. They are not yet being rescued by the Moroccan coast guard after boarding rickety boats to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, but it’s a sure sign that Lusophone Africa is where the future lies in the thoughts of many. The highest-ranked European Union economy in 2013 was Latvia, at 83rd place in the world ratings. Greece, Portugal, Cyprus, Slovenia, Finland, Spain, Croatia, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands were all in the bottom 20. Obviously, African economies generally start from a lower base and, as a result, growth rates in purely percentage terms tend to favour poorer states. They also have fast-rising populations. Nevertheless, six African countries – Equatorial Guinea, Seychelles, Gabon, Mauritius, Libya and Botswana – already enjoy a higher standard of living than Romania, Bulgaria,

Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, in some cases by a considerable margin. Another factor is – and will continue to be – energy. More and more oil and gas is being discovered across Africa and in ever larger quantities, both onshore and offshore. Several states (Mozambique and Tanzania are cases in point) will eventually see income from hydrocarbon extraction giving a huge boost to national economic prosperity.

Ironic It’s not just economists and government officials who are alert to this dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of the two continents. View the readers’ on-line comment section of many African newspapers and it’s easy to find ironic or even hostile postings from those who foresee the day when the tables are turned and Africa is free of bleeding heart European governments and NGOs. In direct contrast to their ill-informed counterparts in

Oil rig

Offshore from Angola

Europe, even the continent’s entertainers have woken up to the fact that Africa is on the rise and Europe is in economic free-fall. It has been around for a while, but there is a spoof video, called Radi-Aid, which pokes fun at what was Live Aid and its ‘We are the World’ song. The video asks Africans to help Europeans, in particular (for some strange reason) Norwegians.

Eritrea posted an annual growth rate of seven per cent, a figure that all EU states could only dream about It may be only a matter of time before this spoof becomes a reality; although, in choosing Norway – outside the EU and with a per capita income nudging US$ 80,000 a year – Radi-Aid has clearly picked the wrong European target. No matter, it’s still very funny and worth watching. *Prior to civil war **Prior to Ebola outbreak

ISDABA-GEDIGA HANAANKA MACAAWINOOYINKA

INYAR KA FAKIR DADKA SABOOLKA AH EE REER YURUB Waxaan markii hore u idhi su’aashaas si kaftan ku jiro, laakiin imika aad uma hubo.Goorma ayaa la arki iyada oo dadka reer Afrika iyo dolwadaha Afrika aay kaalmo dhaqaale u dirayaan Yurub halka imika iyaga loo soo diro? Goorma ayaan arki doona masrixiyad dhaqaale lagu ururinayo oo dadka caanka ah ee Afrika aay inagaga codsanayaan in aan lacagta aan dhididnay (ee ah sida shillin Soomaaliga,ka Uganda,Kenya ama Tanzania), iyaga oo xidhan calaamado qalbiga taabanaya iyo gacan gashiyo midabyo kala duwan leh si ay qaaradda Afrika u muujiso sida ay uga damqanayso dhibta dadka reer Yurub ama qaybta Waqooyi adduunyada? In badan ayaa Afrika soo aragtay dad liidaya ama jilayaasha caanka ah ee Reer Galbeedka oo deeq u ururinaya iyada oo ay awoodo in ay iyadu iskeed u xaliso dhibkeeda iyada oo aan cidi dibadda ka soo faro gelin, sida Somaliya, qaarada –oo kale. Intaas waxa dheer, waxaad moodaa in maalmihii Afrika loo arkayay meel saboolnimo daashatay oo Yurub na tahay barwaaqo in la soo dhaafay - xitaa haddii siyaasiyiinta midigta-dhexe iyo fanaaniinta caanka ah ay ku adkaystaan sidaas. Muuqaalka cusub ee dhaqaale ee kasoo baxaya labadda qaaraadood - Afrika iyo Yurub - waxa uu muujinayaa sawir aan si dhib yar loo sharxi karin.Wadanka Botswana, tusaale ahaan, waxa ay leedahay wakaalad gargaar oo dowladdu taageerto, inkasta oo ilaa imika aanay wali Yurub ka qaban hawlo gargaar. DJIBOUTI CITY – PEARL OF THE GULF OF TADJOURA

F

ounded by the French in 1888 and an outpost of France for many years thereafter, Djibouti city is today evolving and expanding at an impressive pace thanks to foreign investment and an increase in tourism. Modern enough to offer impressive hotels, yet still downto-earth and rustic, Djibouti city is an excellent place to experience the Horn of Africa and all its charms. With temperatures reaching a rather toasty 41°C in June to August, the best time to visit Djibouti is between November and April when the average daily temperature is more bearable, at around 30°C. The city is well served by Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport, with flights to key destinations such as Paris, Dubai and Nairobi.

WHERETOSTAY Flora Grand Hotel, Dubai

WHERE BUSINESS MEETS PLEASURE Dubai is full of wonder, magic and excitement, with so much to see and do. But where to stay? With ever more luxurious and ostentatious offers across the city, it can be hard to choose a hotel that offers a lot without the large price tag. By Edward Dowdall

R

ecently, I had the pleasure of staying at the Flora Grand Hotel, Dubai, about 20 minutes from Dubai International Airport. As Dubai hotels go, the Flora Grand Hotel is a bit more low-key than some of the more famous and imposing properties elsewhere in the city. Located in Deira, the commercial centre, the Flora Grand proved an ideal choice for a business traveller like myself, with the nearest Metro stop only a stone’s throw away and with stores and restaurants close by.

Natural light As a business guest, leisure facilities were not top of my list when selecting the hotel – yet

I was pleasantly surprised by what the Flora Grand has to offer. Facilities here include a gym and health club, a serenity spa, an outdoor swimming pool and a gym. Despite its busy central location, there are plenty of plants and greenery around the hotel to make it feel pleasant and welcoming, while natural light is used as much as possible – a welcome addition. The hotel has 200 air conditioned rooms and offers a wide choice of room types – including superior, executive and deluxe rooms and suites – to suit all tastes and budgets. I opted for a superior king room, which had a four-star feeling. It was comfortably equipped with a decent en-suite bathroom, tea

and coffee making facilities and 24-hour room service. The Flora Grand has an all-day restaurant, The Monsoon, serving a wide range of international cuisine. And for a delicious snack, the Al Nakheel coffee shop has a delightful selection of cookies and fresh pastries. For meetings and events, the hotel offers an ideal venue. There is a boardroom for up to 10 attendees, while the Grand Ballroom can accommodate 225 guests. If you have time off to explore

The hotel is some distance from tourist hotspots such as the Burj Khalifa and the hyper-malls, but its proximity to the Metro station unlocks many exploring opportunities.

Pleasant Despite the minor refurbishment works taking place at the time, I had a pleasant stay at the Flora Grand Hotel and would certainly return for another business trip. The amenities were good for the price; and if you’re looking for a hotel away from the bustle of the tourism sector, the Flora Grand definitely fits the bill.

DINEOUT Hiddo-Dhowr Restaurant, Hargeisa

A TASTE OF GOOD LIVING – SOMALILAND STYLE By Rooble Mohamed

I

f you want to sample the authentic food and culture of Somaliland, then pay a visit to Hiddo-Dhowr. Located within easy reach of the centre of Hargeisa, this restaurant is the destination of choice for local people and tourists alike. Hiddo-Dhowr is owned not by a world-famous chef, or even by an international chain, but by Sahra Halgan, the famous Somaliland singer and freedom fighter. Underlining its unique credentials, HiddoDhowr stands out among other Somali eating places because of its emphasis on traditional Somali culture, which is reflected in the decor of the restaurant.

Traditional Hiddo-Dhowr serves traditional food such as oven-cooked shuuro with either subag (natural ghee) and milk or red sauce. Other classic dishes include sugaar (small pieces of meat) with traditional Somali lahooh (anjera); fish direct from Berbera; organic goat meat; and camel meat. To accompany these various dishes there is an interesting choice of beverages including fresh

camel milk as well as tea, soft drinks and various juices. To provide customers with a snapshot of traditional Somali living, the restaurant is designed in a conventional Somali style, with small huts and a big hall constructed of hand-made materials such as caws and dermo. There are no ‘modern’ chairs, just small tables and authentic Somali chairs known as gambadh. Visitors and tourists can admire the various artefacts that adorn the restaurant, although unfortunately they are not for sale. In addition to its great food and authentic atmosphere, Hiddo-Dhowr offers live entertainment on certain nights. The restaurant comes alive towards the end of the week, with Thursday and Friday nights becoming quite legendary.

Live music takes the form of the traditional Somali oud (kaman) played by Abdinasir Ma’alin Aideed, one of the most celebrated oud musicians on the Somali peninsula. Singers also include Sahra Halgan, who owns the restaurant, and other popular artists such as Aabbi Mire Da’ar and Mohamed Ali Burco. Weekend events usually start around 8 pm and continue until midnight. Occasionally there are also traditional Somali dances, plays and other activities to entertain the visitors. These nights are so popular that customers are advised to reserve a table in advance. The price is $10 per person, which includes dinner and live music). Hiddo-Dhowr also caters for larger groups who wish to organise their own event.

CARREVIEW Toyota Probox

UGLY DUCKLING IS STILL A SOMALI FAVOURITE The Toyota Probox was introduced by Toyota in Japan in August 2002. It is a small wagon designed for commercial use as a delivery car, and closely related to the Toyota Succeed. By Gary Gimson

L

oved and loathed in equal measure, there is one vehicle on Somalia’s roads about which nearly everyone has an opinion. It’s not flashy; just a cheap and cheerful ugly duckling. It does not boast sleek lines and it is not fast or even especially comfortable. But, as just about any Somali will tell you, whatever the Toyota Probox lacks in refinement it more than makes up for in terms of its economy and sheer versatility.

Choice This commercial ‘van’ (as Toyota likes to describe the Probox) comes with a 1,496 cc petrol engine (some older models have a decidedly underperforming 1,300 cc engine) and there is a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed auto gearboxes. Somewhat improbably, there is even a 4x4 version; although I

36

don’t seem to see any on East Africa’s roads. The workhorse Probox can carry up to five passengers, or two passengers and an impressive 2.4 cubic metres / 400 kg of cargo. Toyota claims that the frugal Probox will return a reassuring 16.8 km/litre. And, of course, let’s not forget the ‘super-luxury’ Succeed version. As with some other Toyota models (the Voxy/ Noah springs to mind), it takes something of a genius to tell the difference between a Probox and a Succeed. Externally, the

Succeed has reversing lights bordering the rear number plate – and, well, that’s about it. Despite its many qualities, for me the Toyota Probox has one major shortcoming. Much to my surprise, the car’s suspension system uses coil springs rather than leaf springs, making it better suited, as far as I am concerned, to a luxury vehicle than one that is often used, say, for hauling miraa over rough terrain. The Probox has been around, more or less unchanged, for over 10 years now. So surely it’s time

for a new model from Toyota. But then again, why change a winning formula? As such, the latest 2014 model looks – well, pretty much identical to Toyota’s original 2002 vehicle. Clearly, this is an ugly duckling in no great hurry to become a swan.

DUSHA KAMA QURUX INKASTA OO GAADHI ADGYAHAY BALSE SOOMAALIYA AAD AYAA LOOGA JECEL YAHAY Waa gaadhi la jecelyahay oo cid walba waa ay taqaanaa marka uu jidka marayo oo qof walba fikir ayuu ka qabaa.Muuqaalkiisu maaha mid aad kuu soo jiidanaya, aad ayuu u qiimo jaban yahay balse tayo ayaa u qarsoon.Malaha qurux aad uga muuqata,ma dheereeyo oo xitaa maaha mid aad u raaxo badan. TECHREVIEW Quadcopter drones

LOOK AT YOUR WORLD FROM A NEW ANGLE Mention the word drones and thoughts immediately turn to military hardware and unmanned spy planes. But technology often has a way of evolving to produce useful gadgets for everyday use that are a combination of downsizing and lateral thinking.

O

ne of the latest obsessions is UAV (unmanned air vehicle) quadcopter drones, an innovative and increasingly popular development that has been possible only because of the downsizing of the technology created for much larger aircraft. Like the internet itself, a concept that was originally invented by the military, the development of drones has been seized by civilian innovators and turned into a global phenomenon. Autopilots, sensors, cameras and computer processors have all become very small and very cheap to buy, and over the past few years the market for lightweight, portable and remotely controlled ‘drones’ for pleasure use has exploded, with more and more practical uses being found for them all the time. A lot of the technology has been borrowed from the sensors used in smartphones.

Droning on ď‚€ The ultimate toy

As well as aerial photography for its own sake, other applications include wildlife tracking, aerial mapping, help with farm management and even search and rescue operations. Models starting at $40 are little more than glorified toys; but move up a factor of 10 and you get devices that are being used increasingly for limited commercial applications such as aerial photography and videography. While, of course they can just be flown for fun, the vast majority will have an in-built camera or a fitting to hold a

camera, which can be anything from a compact GoPro to a much larger DSLR. YouTube is filling up with videos of people’s home towns, coastlines, sports and landscapes, all taken from aloft using cameras attached to drones. It’s a wonderful new look at our world from an angle that few get to see first hand. Several retailers, including Amazon, have announced plans to make deliveries by drone and it is thought that within a decade a significant percentage of courier deliveries will be made in this way. DHL has also started its own research. In the United Arab Emirates, work is under way to use drones to deliver important documents. The environmental impact is obvious, taking vehicles off roads; but, in addition, urgent or time-sensitive consignments such as food supplies or medicine can be delivered in minutes, assuming the customer is close enough to the warehouse.

Restrictions Contrary to some opinion, the use of low-level drones is not unrestricted. There are both safety and privacy concerns over their usage. Many countries are developing legislation to ensure public safety and confidence – for example, how high they can be used without a licence, how close they can

Qalabyadda is haga, kuwa wax tebiya, kamaradaha iyo dhamaan farsamada komboyuutarku waxa ay noqdeen qaar baaxad ahaan aad u yar oo qiimahooduna hooseeyo oo la iibsan karo.Dhowrkii sano ee ugu dambeeyay suuqa ama dalabka diyaaradaha yar yar ee is-wadaa waxa uu noqday mid kor u kaca iyada oo waxyaabaha loo isticmaalaa ay sii kordhayaan mar walba.Wax badan oo sancada tiknoolajiyada ku shaqaysa ah ayaa laga soo qaatay taleefanada casriga ee gacanta lagu qaato ee loo yaqaan “smartphones” ee ku shaqeeya taabashada. Waxa inta badan ka buuxa bogga Youtube muuqaalo badan oo magaalooyin, xeebo, goobo ciyaareed iyo dhul kala duwan oo lagu soo qaaday dhamaantood iyada oo la isticmaalayo diyaaradaha yar yar ee is-wada oo lagu dhejiyay kamarad.Waa wax aad u xiiso badan in aad meel xagal ah ama dusha sare ah wax ka soo sawirto si aad u hesho muuqaal aan hore loo arag. Goobo badan oo alaabooyinka gadda,

oo uu ka mid yahay Amazon, ayaa ku dhawaaqay in waxyaabaha laga dalbado ku diraan iyaga oo isticmaalaya diyaaradahaa yar yar ee aan cidi wadin, iyada laga yaabo in muddo 10 sano gudahood ah wax badan la isugu diri doono. Shirkada DHL ayaa iyadu wada cilmi baadhis arrintan ku saabsan.Wadanka isu-taga Imaaraadka Carabta waxa socota in la isticmaalo diyaaradaha yar yar marka la isu dirayo waaraqaha muhiimka ah. Sharciyada lagu xakamayno Isticmaalka diyaaradahan yar ee is-wada waxa jira sharciyo lagu xakameeyo isticmaalkooda inkasta oo dadka qaarkood laga yaabo in aanay rumaysan.Waxa jira walaac laga qabo xaga amaanka iyo in loo isticmaalo wax yaabo dhaawici kara xaqa qofku u leeyaahay in aan nolishiisa gaarka lala socon ama la basaasin.Wadamo badan ayaa imika soo saaraya shuruuc lagu damaanad qaadayo amaanka dadweynaha iyo in aan loo isticmaalin in lagu farogeliyo nolosha iyo sirta dadka kale - waxaa ka mid ah, tusaale ahaan, inta ay kor u duuli karaan iyaga oo aan haaysan rukhsad ama ogolaanshiiyo, inta ay u dul mari karaan goobaha ay dadku deganyihiin ama inta ay u jirsan karaan dhismayaasha haddii ay wax duubayaan. Wadamo badan waxa jirta dad si gaar ah isaga jecel in ay duuliyaan ama isku madadaaliyaan diyaaradahan yar yar ilaa joogga la ogolyahay oo laakiin aan ka lahayn ujeedo ganacsi.Waa in ay duulaan ilaa joog uu qofka hagayaa arki karo. In muuqaal ama filim laga duubo goobaha aan dadka loo ogolayn ama goobaha u dhow madaaradda iyo in sawiro lagaga qaado xafladdaha sida gaarka ah loo qabsado ama goobaha dadka caanka ah aay joogaan, waa waxyaabaha diyaaradahan is-wada ay u isticmaalaan sawirqaadayaashu dabagala dadka caanka ah. Wadamo badan weli sharciyada lagu xakamaynayaa si fiican uma qeexna, balse waxa haboon inta aanad isticmaalin in aad deristo sharciyada meesha aad joogto u dejisan.Iyada oo la saadaalinayo in diyaaradahan yar yar aay ka noqon doonaan 10 % marka la eego suuqa dhinaca diyaaradaha ama duulista hawada 10 ka sano ee socda, ayaa ururka Midawga Yurub waxa uu ka fikirayaa sharciyo adag oo lagu maamulo. Design necessity has meant that the smaller the drone, the lighter its battery and camera have to be to stay airborne. This has led to ultra-light drones that can be obtained at almost disposable prices. Starting from around $40, the trade-off is a small battery that severely limits flight times to under 10 minutes, although some even have a 0.3 megapixel camera that can

produce videos and still images. While some models are controlled by the standard ‘gaming’ joystick device, an increasing trend is to use a smartphone or tablet with the footage live-streamed through the device’s screen. The user then controls the drone by watching his or her device rather than the drone. Serious entry-level drones start at around $400 to $500. Opposite, we look at several models including the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 and the DJI Phantom 2. Most drones come with optional light protective housing that fits around the propellers to reduce the risk of injury or damage should they come into contact with anything. Drones with built-in GPS systems also often have a returnto-base mode, meaning they will return to the point of launch when, say, the battery is running low. Some will even accept preprogrammed flight paths using GPS waypoints so the user can focus on filming rather than flying the drone.

PHANTOM PARROT The Parrot AR Drone 2.0 model retails for around $500 and provides 36 minutes of flying time from two lithium polymer batteries. The DJI Phantom 2 comes in a range of models from $650 up to $1,500. The Phantom 2 has a bracket for a camera while FC40 and Vision models come with their own high definition camera. TRAVELTIPS Enjoy a healthy and relaxed flight

J

ubba Airways has some useful travel tips to help you enjoy a healthy and relaxed flight.

In-flight aerobics

Here are a few simple stretching exercises to help loosen muscles and joints. These exercises can be performed from your seat in the upright position. Breathe normally, do not overstretch and repeat the steps at two-hour intervals. Hands: Grip the edge of the armrest with your hands, hold to a count of five and then relax. Repeat 10 times. Legs: Starting with your feet on the floor, bring your legs slowly up towards your chest, as far as you can. Relax them slowly. Repeat three times. Neck: Slowly move your head towards your right shoulder and hold for five seconds. Then move towards your left shoulder and hold for a further five seconds. Gradually move your chin down towards your chest. Hold for five seconds and relax. Repeat three times. Shoulders: Hunch your shoulders, hold and slowly relax. Repeat five times.
