A WARM WELCOME AWAITS

elcome to the latest edition of Destination Malawi, the official guide to Malawi - the Warm Heart of Africa. As Malawians, we take tremendous pride in making every visitor feel special and it’s the reason why so many of those who come to our country vow to return. Our destination is rich in contrast, compact in size and big in hospitality.

JEWEL IN THE CROWN Malawi is a nation of many attractions, but our unsurpassed jewel in the crown is, of course, Lake Malawi. This is our inland sea. It’s Africa’s second-deepest lake – an expanse of water that covers some 29,600 sq km – and contains nearly 1,000 species of cichlid, many of which are endemic. Traditionally, the lake has been a much-used artery for trade, commerce and travel, a plentiful source of food and, in more recent times, a key focus for tourism. I am delighted to report that our game parks, forest reserves and wildlife areas are making a dramatic return to full health as, indeed, they have been for many years now. To this effect, the Malawi Government-African Parks successful public private partnership in Majete Wildlife

Reserve has been extended to the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve and Liwonde National Park. But Malawi has more than just a lake and wildlife. We have impressive mountain ranges (the highest in Central Africa), wetlands with rare species of birds, carefully cultivated tea estates, some of the world’s best mountain biking, top-class conference facilities, a fast-growing national airline and even our own gin. Not to mention what’s on offer in our four cities, the administrative capital Lilongwe and the commercial hub of Blantyre as well as Mzuzu and Zomba. Moreover, I firmly believe we have a superb range of accommodation in a variety of locations, from luxury lakeside, eco-friendly lodges, historic plantation houses and honeymoon retreats to city centre hotels geared to business travellers. In short, a warm welcome awaits in the warm heart of Africa. Or as we say in Chichewa: Mwalandiridwa ku Malawi.

CITY HOT SPOTS

LILONGWE

F

or centuries Lilongwe was a small fishing village on the banks of the River Lilongwe. Today it is Malawi’s bustling capital and home to more than one million people. The city is divided into two areas: New Town and Old Town. To the south, Old Town is based around the old fishing village and is home to many of the city’s top restaurants, cafes, malls and markets. The New Town was formed after President Banda moved the capital from Zomba to Lilongwe in 1975. Here, visitors will find the government ministries and business offices.

SHOPPING Of the modern shopping precincts, Old Town Mall is the probably the best, particularly for those looking for quality souvenirs. For bargain hunters, the numerous curio craft markets dotted around the city are a good option. A popular spot for tourists is the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, which rescues and rehabilitates wild animals. There are currently over 150 animals in residence, including birds, reptiles, carnivores, primates and antelope. Take a tour to see two of the centre’s most famous inhabitants, lions Bella and Simba.

CULTURE Just outside Lilongwe, Kumbali Cultural Village offers the opportunity to experience Malawian culture in its truest form. Visitors can see traditional dancing and drumming, listen to live acoustic music and taste typical Malawian food.

For something a little different, Malawian wine company – Linga Wines – provides tours of its winery. Learn about the process of winemaking, enjoy sampling Linga’s fresh fruit wines and tour the winery garden and fruit-producing trees. Pre-booking is essential. From the modern shops and buildings in New Town, to the top restaurants, places of culture and exciting street markets of Old Town, it’s hard not to fall in love with Lilongwe.

WHERE TO EAT Latitude 13 is consistently rated one of the best hotels and restaurants in the city. The contemporary eatery serves Malawian dishes with a twist and is definitely worth a visit. Mamma Mia, based in Old Town Mall, is a popular dining place for pizza lovers. Surrounded by gardens, Ama Khofi at the Four Seasons Centre is the ideal spot for a quiet cup of coffee or light lunch. For those who want to try traditional Malawian food, booking a table at Nthalo is recommended. Why not try chambo (local fish) with nsima (staple food) or rice?

BLANTYRE

M

alawi’s second city and commercial hub is one of the greenest and cleanest in East Africa. As the country’s oldest city, Blantyre is steeped in history.

HISTORICAL PLACES Built by Scottish Missionaries between 1888 and 1891, St Michael and All Angels Church remains one of the main historical landmarks in Blantyre. Located at the Blantyre Mission, the church is now a national monument. Roughly 81 different brick types were used in the construction of the building, all of which were made on-site by local men from clay and fired in wood-fuelled kilns. Another national monument found in Blantyre is The Old Manager’s House, also known as Mandala House. Built in 1882, from sun-dried grass, mud and bricks, Mandala House is the oldest building in Blantyre. Originally constructed as a home for the managers of the African Lakes Corporation, it later became the first formal bank in the country and the original vault door can still be seen. Now, the building houses Mandala Café, La Caverna Art Gallery, which sells local art, and the Society of Malawi Library and Archive, consisting of a vast number of

Malawian journals, galleries and books dating as far back as the 19th century. For a true sense of Malawian history, Mandala House is the place to go.

WILDLIFE There are not many cities in the world in which you could drive just 30 minutes from the city centre and find yourself on a safari. Well, in Blantyre you can do just that. Game Haven Lodge provides short safari tours around Chimwenya Game Park, offering visitors the chance to see many wild animals up close. Visit the park to see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, duiker, small wild cats, otter, antelope, nyala and sable as well as roan, eland and kudu.

TEA PLANTATIONS Located between Blantyre and Mount Mulanje are the Thyolo (pronounced ‘Cho-lo’) tea estates, which have been producing tea since 1908. By arrangement, it is possible to tour some of the estates and see the work process of these plantations. Nearby, the Thyolo Forest Reserve offers a haven for walkers and birdwatchers. This vibrant, cosmopolitan city offers plenty to see and do, and will certainly leave you wanting to return.

WILDLIFE

NEWEST ‘BIG FIVE’ DESTINATION

DESTINATION MALAWI 2017-18

n the past, Malawi has been one of the lesser known safari spots in Africa owing to low numbers of animals and poaching habits. That has all changed, however. Conservation programmes and protection investments have resulted in an increase in the country’s wildlife numbers. Malawi now has a great variety of wildlife, including more than 650 bird species and the Big Five.

rience away from the crowds and in beautiful areas of unspoilt wilderness. While tourist numbers are still relatively low, safaris in Malawi are extremely affordable. Whether you’re exploring by safari vehicle, walking, trekking or by boat, Malawi offers an unforgettable safari experience.

A nine-year public private partnership with African Parks Foundation has seen Malawi’s parks restocked with more than 2,500 animals. African Parks is also undertaking one of the largest elephant translocations in conservation history. In collaboration with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), the foundation is moving up to 500 elephants from Liwonde and Majete national parks to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in Central Malawi. There are also many animal rehabilitation programmes throughout the country including a project to reintroduce cheetahs in Majete Wildlife Reserve.

Malawi has a total of nine national parks and wildlife reserves, each one unique in its own way:

IDYLLIC WATERS

T

he jewel in Malawi’s tourism crown is indisputably Lake Malawi. The huge expanse of clear, blue water and golden sands is a breathtaking site, attracting many tourists each year. This freshwater lake boasts a World Heritage Site in Lake Malawi National Park and is home to rare species of Malawi’s brightly coloured cichlids and exceptional aquatic wildlife. Lake Malawi is located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. With a width of 75 km, a length of about 600 km and a depth of 700 metres in the north, the lake is the third-largest in Africa and one of the most intriguing tourism hot spots in southern Africa. Less than two hours from Lilongwe, tourists will find themselves in an unspoilt paradise surrounded by nature and beautiful views.

The quiet beaches are ideal for relaxing, while water sports activities keep everyone entertained. Another fond nickname for the lake is ‘Lake of Stars’, stemming from the many lanterns set adrift by local fisherman as they set out each evening, which from a distance look like stars. The Lake of Stars Festival is an annual three-day music event held in October on the shores of Lake Malawi. The festival was started in 2004 and attracts thousands of attendees and international musical acts.

VARIETY The shores of Lake Malawi are dotted with a variety of accommodation. From backpacking self-catering options to secluded lodges and luxury resorts, the area has something for every type of traveller. Most accommodation can be found in the lakeshores areas of Mangochi, Monkey Bay, Salima, Cape Maclear, Nkhatabay and Karonga.

FRESHWATER Lake Malawi National Park is the first freshwater national park in the world. Located at Cape Maclear, the park comprises the land surrounding the bay, the lake and the Marelli Islands up to 100 metres offshore. The national park was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984 and is the only park in Malawi to be created for the conservation of fish and aquatic life. The abundance of tropical fish species makes this area a much-sought-after aquarium. Away from the water, the national park has a variety of animals, including baboons, antelope and hyrax, and a bird population that includes fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops. A walk through the national park to the rocks at Otter Point is recommended. In addition to the splendid view, visitors can feed the fish from the rocks directly from the hand.

EXPLORE For adventure seekers, a number of activities are available at Lake Malawi. One of the most popular is kayaking, which offers a great way to explore the coves and coastal wildlife up close. This eco-friendly activity allows you to watch fish, birds and otters in their natural habitat or circle the islands at leisure.

In addition to Malawi’s famed natural attractions, a growing number of visitors are drawn to the warm heart of Africa to do more than just view wildlife or laze on the sandy shores of Lake Malawi. Those who seek high-energy thrills come to participate in a variety of sports that allow them to see Malawi from a different perspective. For example, Malawi is one of Africa’s top destinations for mountain bike tours, especially in the less populated north. The quiet roads, magnificent terrain and the opportunity to cycle in national parks adds to the appeal. Visitors can bring their own bikes or there are opportunities to rent locally and join an organised tour. There are day or multi-day excursions or more gruelling long-distance trips. Kayaking on Lake Malawi is a further attraction. There are islands on Lake Malawi with camps dedicated to kayaking and operated by tour operators specialising in the sport.

also possible to combine or mix and match hiking with mountain biking or horse-riding adventures in the same area. For those seeking less energetic activities, there is always golf. The Lilongwe Golf Club was founded in 1930 and was eventually upgraded to a full 18-hole course. The tight tree-lined fairways make this a tricky course and a challenge for all players, irrespective of handicap. As well as being Malawi’s only championship golf course, the club offers facilities for many other sports facilities such as swimming, tennis, squash, snooker and pool as well as table tennis. Beyond Lilongwe there are various nine-hole courses such as the Blantyre Sports Club, Limbe Country Club (also in Blantyre), Mzuzu, the Kasasa course in Dwanga and the recently completed course at the Mbawa Country Club.

Hikers and climbers can enjoy the delights of Malawi’s deep south area of Mount Mulanje and nearby areas such as the high Zoma and Viphya plateaux with their unusual landscapes at cooler altitudes. Of course, it’s

The highlight of the sailing calendar is the Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon, an international 560 km race held every July over eight days. Visitors can also go water skiing and sailboarding.

SNORKELLING Lake Malawi contains the largest number of fish species of any lake in Africa, making the area extremely popular among scuba divers and snorkellers. There are several diving spots located around the island, so why not delve

A number of units have their own dive instructor and equipment, perfect for getting in some practice before heading out into the waters.
