Foreword
Welcome to Africa’s hidden gem
I
would like to welcome you to the latest edition of Destination Malawi, the official guide to Malawi – the Warm Heart of Africa.
are endemic. Once used simply for trade purposes, Lake Malawi today is a key focus for tourism, offering plenty of water sports and boat activities.
This publication highlights yet another great year for Malawi’s tourism industry, with new properties opening and existing properties undergoing refurbishment across the entire country. Our two major cities – the administrative capital, Lilongwe, and the commercial hub of Blantyre – offer top-class accommodation, from backpackers and self-catering to luxury eco-friendly lodges and premium hotels.
But Malawi has much more to offer than just its lakes and wildlife, with some of the highest mountain ranges in Central Africa, wetlands with rare bird species and cultivated tea estates offering fantastic tours to visitors wanting a taste of traditional Malawian life. From some of the world’s best mountain biking to state-of-the-art conferencing centres, there truly is something for everyone in Malawi.
I am delighted to tell you that our game parks, wildlife areas and forest reserves have returned to full health, as they have been continuing to do over the past few years. Forest reserves have their own ecosystems and attractions; and although our parks and reserves are increasing in popularity, they remain relatively inexpensive and uncrowded in comparison with the rest of the continent.
To summarise, a warm welcome awaits all who visit Africa’s hidden gem.
ISAAC D. KATOPOLA Director of Tourism
Malawi’s highlight Undoubtedly, Lake Malawi is our country’s highlight and one of the main reasons that tourists vow to return. As one of Africa’s deepest lakes – an expanse of water covering 29,600 sq km – it has more than 1,000 species of cichlid, many of which

Introduction
Why visit Malawi?
T
here are numerous reasons why one should visit Malawi, but perhaps the country’s greatest asset lies in its own people. Malawians are undoubtedly among the friendliest people in the world – both charming and hospitable to visitors from the moment they arrive. This good nature and generosity has rightfully given the country its reputation as the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’. It’s not just Malawi’s hospitality, however, that encourages guests to return year after year. Picturesque scenery, natural attractions and geographical diversity all have a part to play. From the breathtaking peaks of Mulanje in the south to the verdant grasslands of the Nyika Plateau in the north, and with river valleys, game reserves and national parks found in all areas of
the country, Malawi has one of the most beautifully varied landscapes in Africa.
Adventures Because it’s a landlocked country, surrounded by Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, many visitors are surprised to discover that Malawi is home to some of the best beaches and water sports in Africa. This is thanks to Lake Malawi, which lies in East Africa’s Great Rift Valley and was formed over a million years ago. Rich in colourful fish and with its shores lined by charming villages and boutique lodges, the lake today is a popular hit with tourists. For such a small country, Malawi offers a wide array of wildlife tours and safaris. With nine land-based national parks and wildlife reserves, Malawi is Africa’s newest Big Five destination, able to compete with other major safari options in southern Africa. The mixed terrain and varied landscapes of Malawi open the way to a host of outdoor activities, from mountain biking and abseiling to trekking, horse riding and even diving at one of the country’s many freshwater sites. The Chongoni Rock Art Area in the midlands is a Unesco World Heritage Site, while the many cultural tours and festivals
that take place throughout the year provide a chance to see Malawian heritage at first hand. Other popular activities include yoga retreats, tea factory tours and art safaris. Still regarded as an undiscovered gem in the southern African crown, Malawi, with its sheer range of unique activities and holiday locations, is the perfect destination for everyone.
At a glance • Friendly locals • Pleasant climate • Peaceful and compact • Range of activities • Spectacular lake • Authentic nature experience • Rich cultural heritage

City Hot Spots
Lilongwe
The Malawi capital is exceptionally green, with trees and grassland covering most of the city. There are two different areas: the smart and modern New Town and the Old Town. The New Town was built in the 1960s and 1970s and is the most developed area of the city. It was formed after President Hastings Banda moved to Lilongwe in 1975. To the south lies the Old Town. This part of Lilongwe is very similar to other towns in Malawi, with its old street markets, fishing village and a real mix of commercial, residential and industrial buildings. Many of the capital’s top restaurants, cafÊs and malls have their home in Old Town. For those who love to spend time shopping, Old Town Mall has quality

souvenirs, bookshops and craft stores as well as the popular Mamma Mia eatery for pizza lovers. The city has plenty of other shopping spots, too, from upmarket stores and fine dining at the Four Seasons Centre to a craft market just outside the Old Town. For active visitors, the city has a golf course as well as tennis courts and swimming pools.
Things to do A popular destination for visitors is the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, which provides a sanctuary for injured and wild animals in need of care and has a mission to combat wildlife crime. There are over 150 animals in residence here, ranging from birds and reptiles to primates and antelope. Visitors are encouraged to tour the centre, see the animals and make a contribution. Those looking to experience Malawian culture can find it just outside the capital. Kumbali Cultural Village offers visitors an opportunity to see traditional dancing and
drumming, listen to live acoustic music and taste Malawian food. The Parliament Building is worth a visit for its architectural beauty. Tours are available, including the debating chamber when not in use. From modern shopping malls to old markets to cultural visits, Lilongwe has it all.

Blantyre
O
ften regarded as the greenest and cleanest city in East Africa, historic Blantyre is the capital of Malawi’s southern region. It is the country’s second-largest city and a hub of finance and commerce industry with a history going back to early colonial times. Blantyre has its origins in Scottish missionaries in the late 19th century. St Michael and All Angels Church, built by these missionaries, is one of the city’s historic landmarks and a national monument. Located at the Blantyre Mission, this impressive building features more than 80 types of brick and was constructed by men who had no training. Other national monuments include the Old Manager’s House, also known as Mandala House. Built in the early 1880s from sun-dried mud and bricks, this venerable building is well worth a visit.
‘Cho-lo’) Tea Estates, located between Blantyre and Mount Mulanje, are a great place to visit. The estates have been producing tea since 1908. Visitors can arrange to go on a tour of the plantations and see how the work is done. Meanwhile, the nearby Thyolo Forest Reserve is a haven for walkers and birdwatchers.
Safari Surprisingly, within a 30-minute drive of the city, you can be on a safari. Game Haven Lodge provides a short safari tour of Chimwenya Game Park, offering a chance see the wildlife up close. Among the park’s many inhabitants are giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and small wild cats. Blantyre is a vibrant city that offers plenty to see and do for everyone and will certainly leave you wanting to return.

Wildlife
A special kind of safari experience
I
n former times, Malawi was far from high on the list of safari destinations because of frequent poaching and a relative scarcity of animals. Today, however, the country has conservation and protection programmes in place to stop the poachers, resulting in an upsurge in wildlife numbers that can be seen in its nine national parks. Malawi’s parks and reserves offer something rather special and unique in East
Africa. Thanks to the country’s abundance of unspoilt wilderness, visitors can view the wildlife in an intimate setting away from the crowds for their own personal experience. As tourist numbers are relatively low compared with other countries in this part of the world, safaris in Malawi are very affordable and offer unforgettable experiences on foot, by boat or in a safari vehicle. Nyika National Park is Malawi’s largest, oldest and most unusual national park, standing 2,500 metres above sea level and featuring high and rolling grassland. The park is home to over 400 species of birds and wild animals, including antelope, buffalo, elephant and zebra, and contains the highest population of leopard in central Africa. Activities include mountain biking, 4x4 excursions and birdwatching. The closest park to Lilongwe is Kasungu National Park. Species found here include

rare painted hunting dogs, sable, impala, kudu and roan antelope. Elephant and hippo, too, can be easily spotted.
Liwonde Liwonde is Malawi’s most popular national park. Lake Malawi’s only outlet, the Shire River, which runs through the park, is ideal for boat safaris. Antelope, black rhino, elephant, leopard, lion and numerous species of bird can be seen in Liwonde. Lake Malawi, a World Heritage Site since 1984, is home to colourful tropical fish, while the lake area is perfect for kayaking, scuba diving, snorkelling and sailing. Lunge National park, about 50 km from Blantyre, is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 300 species of bird. The park also contains wildlife such as baboon, buffalo, bushbuck, impala and warthog.

ake Malawi is regarded as the jewel in the nation’s tourism crown, and it’s easy to see why. Its cool, clear blue waters, paired with its golden sands, make an unforgettable sight for visitors.
Lake Malawi offers a classic beach holiday experience combined with adventure, sport and wildlife. Quiet beaches are ideal for relaxing, while water sport activities keep all entertained.
Furthermore, rare species of brightly coloured cichlids and other forms of aquatic life can be found in the lake, while its national park is a World Heritage Site.
‘Lake of Stars’ is a nickname given to the lake and stems from the many lanterns set adrift by fisherman as they set out each evening. From a distance, a collection of these lanterns appears like stars.
Lake Malawi is an impressive 365 miles in length from north to south and 52 miles wide. The northern end of the lake is 700 metres deep. It’s the third-largest lake in Africa and, thanks to its rich harvest of fish, it plays a key role in the nation’s economy. Here, less than two hours’ drive from the capital, tourists can find themselves in a paradise surrounded by unspoilt nature.

Accommodation There are numerous accommodation options on the shores of the lake. Firstrate beach lodges can be found in the popular areas of Mangochi and Monkey Bay, while Salima, Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay and Karonga also have an excellent range of accommodation, from
self-catering and backpacking to secluded lodges and luxury hotels. Mumbo and Domwe Islands offer idyllic getaways while Blue Zebra Island Lodge tucked way on Nankoma Island, a part of the Maleri Islands archipelago; the Norman Carr cottage and Pumulani Lodge offer some of the most luxurious options. Other budget options exist across the entire stretch of the lakeshore. Located at Cape Maclear, Lake Malawi National Park is the first freshwater national park in the world and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984. Aside from an abundance of fish species, there are plenty of animals to be found in the national park, including baboon, antelope and hyrax, plus a bird population that includes fish eagles,
Lake Malawi
Malawi sports cormorants and hamerkops. A walk through the park to the Otter Point is highly recommended and in addition to the wonderful view, visitors can feed the fish from the rocks directly from the land.
In addition to relaxing on the sandy shores of Lake Malawi, there are plenty of high-energy thrills to be found. Kayaking on the lake is one of the most popular outdoor activities, giving tourists a chance to view the lake from a different perspective while having fun and staying active. There are islands across the lake dedicated to kayaking, which can be arranged by tour operators specialising in the sport. Malawi is one of Africa’s top destinations for mountain biking, particularly in the less populated north with its quiet roads, magnificent terrain and national
parks. Mountain bike tours are available or visitors can bring their own bikes for day, multi-day or long-distance trips. Hiking and climbing on Mount Mulanje and horse riding in southern Malawi are popular tourist activities, too, while for those seeking a less energetic sport, there is always golf. The Lilongwe Golf Club, founded in 1930, has a challenging 18-hole course. As well as being home to Malawi’s only championship golf course, the club offers other sporting facilities including a swimming pool and facilities for snooker and table tennis.

MV Elephant Marsh Master (MV. EMM) is an airboat which operates on the Elephant Marsh, primarily for tourism purposes. Tourist groups are limited to a maximum of nine people but for school groups, the boat can seat 11 children and one adult. Trips are between one and three hours in duration and Robert Nyirenda is the skipper/pilot. The airboat is the most efficient way of getting around the marsh and the experience itself is fantastic. You can travel in very shallow conditions as well as over wetland vegetation very quickly.
